MEDITATION

ON TODAY’S READINGS The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

As the day was drawing to a close . . . (Luke 9:12) Why did Jesus keep the people so late? Was he unaware of the passing of time? Or was he so caught up with healing

them that he forgot that they would need to eat? Neither scenario is very likely. Jesus was always aware of his surroundings, and he never did something without first thinking it through.

No, Jesus knew what he was doing and why he was doing it. He knew he would need to feed this crowd of people miraculously—and he was happy to do it. It was his way of giving them another sign of his love for them. He didn’t want to just heal them and send them on their way. He wanted to share a meal with them. He wanted to spend more time with them—the kind of quality time that happens during a shared meal.

This is part of the wonder of the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus wants to spend time with us. He wants to spend time with you. He loves you for who you are, not just for what he can do for you. He just enjoys your company, and he wants to share his love with you.

No wonder Jesus promised to be with us in a special way at Mass! Every time we receive him in Communion, he comes into our lives—all of him. He comes to tell us that he loves us and that he values us. Certainly he comes as Savior to heal and to bless us, but he also comes as Friend just to be with us. In fact, it’s because he loves us so much that he is committed to giving us his blessings.

Jesus is waiting for you at Mass today. He’s waiting for you every day in the Tabernacle of his presence. Go spend time with him. Let his friendship and love warm your heart. And go warm his heart with your love.

빵 과 포도주의 외적인 형상 속에 실제로, 본질적으로 현

존(現存)하는 예수 그리스도의 몸과 피를 말한다. 어

원적으로는 희랍어 '유카리스티아'(eucharistia)에서 유래되

었는데 이 말의 본래의 뜻은 '감사하다'는 것이다. 이는 하느

님이 인간에게 주신 최고의 은혜에 감사함을 의미한다. 구약

성경에는 성체에 대한 많은 예표(豫表)들이 나오는데 창세기

14장 18절의 '떡과 술'의 표현이 그 한 예이다. 또한 예수는

스스로 "나는 하늘에서 내려 온 살아 있는 빵이다. 이 빵을 먹

는 사람은 누구든지 영원히 살 것이다"(요한 6:51)

라고 하셨으며, 최후만찬 때 하신 말씀(마태 26:26

-28, 마르 14:22-24, 루가 22:19-20, 1코린 11:23

-25)을 통하여 성체성사(聖體聖事)를 설정하신 것

이다.

따라서 성체에 대한 확신은 예수의 강력한

말씀에 근거하므로 성체에 대한 믿음은 그리스도교

신앙의 기본이 된다고 할 수 있다. 성체는 미사 중

성찬의 전례 부분에서 축성되어 그리스도의 몸과 피로 변해

져 한 가지 신비를 세 가지 측면에서 보여준다. 우선 성체는

세상 끝날까지 인간과 함께 계시기 위한 그리스도의 사랑에

서 비롯된 '실재적'이며 '신체적'인 현존이다. 또한 성체는 인

간을 구원하기 위한 그리스도의 희생이다. 즉, 미사성제를 통

해 이 희생이 계속됨으로써 그리스도는 모든 인류를 구원하

시는 것이다. 그리고 성체는 사랑의 일치를 보여준다. 즉 신

자들은 성체를 받아 모심으로써 하느님과의 일치라는 영혼의

초자연적 생명을 기르게 되는 것이다

[ [ 성혈성혈 (聖血) ]]

사 람이 되신 예수 그리스도의 거룩한 피. 성혈은 십자가

의 죽음을 통하여 이룩한 예수 그리스도의 구원을 상

징한다. 예수께서도 최후의 만찬 석상에서 "이것은 나의 피다.

죄를 용서해 주려고 많은 사람을 위하여 내가 흘리는 피

다"(마태 26:28)라고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 성혈은 사도시대 이

래로 신자들의 흠숭의 대상이 되어 왔는데 특히 성체성사와

깊이 연관되어 있다. 미사 때 봉헌되는 포도주가 사제의 축성

으로 성혈로 변화되어 포도주의 외적 형상 속에 그리스도가

현존하기 때문이다. 신자들은 성체를 받아 모심과

마찬가지로 성혈을 받아 마심으로써 살아있는 그리

스도와 하나가 되며 영원한 생명을 준비하게 된다

(요한 6:54-56 참조).

성혈에 대한 신심은 전통적인 것으로서 특

히 교황 글레멘스(Clemens) 6세(재위 : 1342-

1352)는 그리스도의 피는 성자와 함께 결합되어

있기에 너무나 귀중하여 단 한 방울의 피로써도 모

든 인류의 속죄에 충분하다고 하였다. 또한 1849년, 교황 비

오(Pius) 9세는 7월의 첫 일요일을 성혈 축일로 지정하여 모

든 교회가 지키도록 했으며, 1914년 교황 성 비오(St. Pius)

10세는 축일을 7월 1일로 변경시켰다. 그러나 제2차 바티칸

공의회 이후에는 성혈 축일을 성체 축일에 함께 기념하게 되

었다. 즉 삼위일체 주일 후의 첫 목요일이나 첫 일요일은 성

체 성혈 대축일의 이름으로 기념한다.

21. 천사의빵 길손음식, 자녀들의 참된음식, 개에게는 주지마라.

22. 이사악과 파스카양, 선조들이 먹은만나, 이성사의 예표로다.

23. 참된음식 착한목자, 주예수님 저희에게, 크신자비 베푸소서.

저희먹여 기르시고, 생명의땅 이끄시어, 영생행복 보이소서.

24. 전지전능 주예수님, 이세상에 죽을인생, 저세상에 들이시어,
