SACRIFICE Today the Church focuses on the Eucharist. Today’s readings remind us how con-nected to ancient blood sacrifices we are when offering our unbloody sacrifice. The reading from Exodus describes a solemn ritual designed so the Israelites would never forget their covenant with God. The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews turns us from those ancient animal sacri-fices, the first efforts to worship the living God. Our sacrifice is the body and blood of the Son of God. Because of Christ we have a new covenant. The Gospel from Mark retells the establishment of that covenant, the familiar story of the Last Supper. Juxtaposed with the story of animal sacrifice as it is here, we are chal-lenged to listen with new attention, to remember the great price paid for our salvation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A new name for this feast, long known as Corpus Christi or “Body of Christ,” points to an important recovery of Communion from the shared chalice, the Precious Blood, in the Roman Catholic liturgy. For many centuries, only the priest received from the chalice. Now, over the last forty years, the cup has been offered more frequently to the faithful. Sadly, perhaps because it is not offered at all Masses, or because people are free to pass by the offered cup, it can be seen by some as a “take it or leave it” option. Some important meanings surface, however, when we drink from the common cup, such as our desire to participate in the pouring out of Christ’s love. Bread is the staff of life, eaten by necessity even in times of pain. Wine, on the other hand, is the mark of festivity, a pledge of joy, a sign of unity between our altar table and the banquet feast of heaven. The center of the Gospel today is Jesus speaking of the pouring out of his blood, and his offer of a cup of blessing to be shared as a sign of his love. SACRIFICIO Hoy la Iglesia se centra en la Eucaristía. Las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan la gran co-nexión que existe entre los sacrificios de sangre de la antigüedad y el sacrificio in-cruento que ofrecemos ahora. La lectura del Éxodo describe un rito solemne para que los israelitas nunca olviden su pacto con Dios. La lectura de la Carta a los Hebreos nos lleva de los antiguos sacrificios de animales a los primeros esfuerzos para adorar al Dios vivo. Nuestro sacrificio es el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Hijo de Dios. A causa de Cristo tenemos una nueva alianza. El Evangelio según San Marcos relata la creación de ese pacto, la conocida historia de la Última Cena. Si contrastamos la historia del sacrificio de animales que vemos aquí, se nos desafía a escuchar con nueva atención, para recordar el gran precio que pagó por nuestra salvación. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Los cristianos creemos que Jesucristo esta físicamente presente en el pan y el vino consagrado durante la misa. Esta creencia es tan antigua como nuestra Iglesia, pero fue solo en el siglo XIII que los cristianos comenzaron a venerar la presencia sacramenta-da de Jesús en la hostia. Fue durante esta época que nació la fiesta de Corpus Cristi o la actual Celebración del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Muchas comunidades cristia-nas celebran esta fiesta con procesiones y cantos en honor al santísimo sacramento del altar. Recuerdo que en Texas el pueblo Mexicoamericano cantaba: “Bendito, bendito, bendi-to sea Dios, / los ángeles cantan y alaban a Dios (2x). Yo creo Dios mío que estas en el altar / oculto en la hostia ten vengo adorar (2x)”. Este canto enfatiza la verdadera pre-sencia de Jesús en el pan consagrado, pero sus cantores ignoran el hecho que nosotros también fuimos consagrados en el bautismo; consagrados para “alter Cristus” (otro Cristo) en el vecindario. En un mundo donde menos gente asiste a Misa el único Cor-pus Cristi que la mayoría de la gente secularizada verá es tu cuerpo. Then his mother and family come asking for him. I got bullied at school. I’d have welcomed my family to rescue me. But Jesus says no, here’s my family—the ones doing God’s will. It took me years to realize there’s no contradiction here. When we moved here we knew no one. Then Linda and I joined the Bible study group and made friends. Eve-rything changed when our son got leukemia. Our families were way too far away to help us, so our Bible study friends became our family. They fixed meals, prayed with us, sat with Jonathan so we could rest, cleaned house, mowed the grass, and even paid bills. MAKE-UP TRAINING SESSION - We would like to thank all of the parishioners who attended one of the recent training sessions for Lectors, Sacristans, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. We will try to set up a make-up training session that will accommodate everyone who is interested in continuing in their ministry.

GRIEFBUSTERS – Catholic Charities and the Hospice of the Central Coast provides support to children and teens who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Griefbusters provides support in a safe place where children and teens can share their experience as they move through the healing process. Call (831) 393-3110 for more informa-tion.

Remember those fabulous Lenten Fish dinners? ... The committee presented Sacred Heart with a check for $15,500 from the proceeds. Thank you to everyone who volunteered -- the cooks, dessert makers, set-up and clean-up crews, committee members, etc. -- to make this fundraiser a great success.

We would also like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the 40th anniversary Mass and reception for Fr. Mike Miller. He was very happy.

Each year, we as parishioners of Sacred Heart and members of the Diocese of Monterey are asked to commit to our practice of stew-ardship by pledging to the Annual Ministries Appeal (AMA). This appeal supports (just to name a few) the formation of future dea-cons and priests, Faith Formation, Catholic Schools, Respect Life, Hispanic Ministry, professional counsel with legal problems, rep-resentation in Sacramento, outreach to prisons and universities, etc. Over $47,966 was pledged in the 2012 appeal! Our diocesan goal was $38,900. All monies received over our responsibility to the diocese are returned to the parish. Sacred Heart is blessed to have parishioners who prayerfully give to this mission.

Este apoyo sostiene (solo por nombrar algunos) la formación de futuros diáconos y sacerdotes, Catequesis, Escuelas Católicas, Respeto a la Vida, los Ministerios Hispanos, asistencia legal profesional, representación en Sacramento, asistencia publica en prisiones y universidades, etc. Mas de $47,966 fue-ron prometidos en la campaña del 2012!
