Center Expands, Renamed BCM Liver, Kidney and Pancreas Center

A Message from the Director

2011 marks the expansion of our clinical services. The center will now offer pancreas and expanded renal transplant service, creating a multidiscipline BCM Liver, Kidney and Pancreas Center. New team members of specialized transplant nephrologists, renal and pancreas transplant surgeons, and transplant coordinators have joined our group in recent months. Ronald H. Kerman, PhD is setting up an immune evaluation laboratory to give us the advantage of an on site tissue typing lab that will work directly with the transplant team to ensure the patients are matched with the best possible allografts, giving them improved outcomes both short and long-term.

Jacqueline Lappin, MD, will act as Surgical Director of the Pancreas Transplant Program. Lappin ran the largest pancreas transplant service in South Texas. Charles T. Van Buren, MD will bring his vast transplant experience to the group, and will remain Surgical Director of Renal Transplant at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Van Buren performed the very first liver transplant in Houston in 1985.

The entire team, including more than two dozen lab technicians, nurse coordinators and administrative staff were recently recruited from Memorial Hermann and UTHealth's transplant program, transferring the entire program to Baylor College of Medicine and it's affiliates.

Last year, the Division performed our 1,000th successful liver transplant, while maintaining the highest liver transplant survival rate in the nation, with a one-year adult patient survival rate of 96.5 percent, compared to the national expected survival rate of 89.38 percent.

John A. Goss, MDDr. Goss is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Abdominal Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

St. Luke's Shannon Cook has unique perspective on her job

Transplant Coordinator also an Organ Recipient

When Shannon Cook, RN comes to work at St. Luke’s Cooley Transplant Center, she doesn’t just come as a highly experienced Senior Liver Transplant Coordinator; she comes as a transplant recipient.

At the age of fourteen, Shannon Cook was diagnosed with kidney disease, cause undetermined. By age sixteen, Cook was confined to a dialysis machine ending her “normal” teenage life. She went from high school to home school spending three days a week in four hour sessions of hemodialysis which left her with no energy to enjoy the little free time she had. Due to her illness and the effects of dialysis, Cook missed much of her schooling and had to make up classes every summer.

When Shannon Cook turned 18, she was told by a fellow dialysis patient that kidney transplant could be an option. Determined not to be on dialysis for life, young Cook immediately did her own research. Her sister, who was nineteen at the time offered to donate one of her kidneys if compatible. Shannon Cook’s parents were adamant about transplantation; transplant was not much talked about twenty years ago and they feared they would be “rocking the boat” being that Cook was doing relatively well on dialysis.

But for Cook, dialysis was not a life; it was confinement, lack of freedom, pain, and exhaustion. She knew that if her sister was not a match she would stop dialysis and let life take its toll. Fortunately, her sister was a match and the transplant was performed when Cook was 19 years old. This past August, Shannon celebrated 20 years of success with her sister’s kidney.

Even before her transplant, Shannon Cook knew she wanted to be a nurse and work in the field of transplantation. “It was always around me; it just was part of my life.” After transplant, Cook graduated from high school and attended college

becoming a nurse. She worked as a hospital floor nurse, then moved to ICU, and finally to transplant in 1999. Today, she works with liver transplant patients at St. Luke’s and serves as an inspiration to them and their families.

As a transplant recipient Cook says she encourages her patients to work harder on their recovery, and to be diligent with their medications and exercise programs. “Patients often tell me that I don’t know how they feel and that I don’t understand what they are going through. I pause and say, ACTUALLY…I do, let me tell you my story…” During transplant education classes, Cook will occasionally mention her experience as a transplant recipient. When she does, people sit quietly, look at one another, and look back up at Cook with surprise and sometimes shock. “I think they are shocked to see someone so healthy, young, and working. It’s as if I’m suddenly one of their own, not just their nurse. I’m happy to be a shoulder to cry on but I always balance it with my role as a nurse who expects them to be good compliant patients.”

Today, twenty years post-kidney transplant, Shannon Cook, RN lives life to the fullest. She has a vibrant career helping liver transplant patients with their recovery, her home life is fulfilled with a wonderful husband and eight year old son, and she has the freedom to travel, wake board, and do what she loves to do. “I love my job because I know that transplant works! I couldn’t do what I do if I didn’t believe in it.”
