Pastoral Reflections by George Athanasiou In the next few weeks our mailboxes will be flooded, our Facebook timelines will be filled, and we will be informed of a great milestone in the lives of many of our children, teenagers, and young adults. Graduation is right around the corner and whether it is graduation from Sunday School, High School, the various colleges and universities, or from our Seminary (just to name a few), it is an entry into the next phase of life for those individuals. Our Patron Saint, St. Paul told Timothy, who at the time was a very young man just out of his teens, to practice the traditions he has received from his mother and from the Church; and that the most important thing in his life was training in Godliness. For he said “Godliness profits in every way.” The next phase in life is not solely centered on higher education, growing in your knowledge of an ever-changing world, and getting that dream job you have always hoped for. Rather, it is teamed up with becoming a Christ centered individual. It is about becoming Orthodox Christian Professionals, not merely professionals who are Greek and happen to be baptized in the Orthodox Church. As our graduates prepare for their next step, no matter what level it may be, they must take more control and make the Orthodox faith they grew up in, their own. For our High School Graduates, your parents have guided you this far. They have held your hand in every step of that journey. Now, you will face many changes and challenges on your own. Your parents will continue to support you, love you, and cheer for you but now it is time to take ownership of your life and of your faith. When Saturday night comes around and you have an invitation to a number of social events on campus, does Sunday morning even play a role in that decision process? You have to think to yourself, what time do I give to God? Am I willing to let another Sunday (my only time I give to God) slip by? How will you face that challenge? College and Graduates of Higher Education, your life is exactly that…”YOURS.” The decisions you made in college have made you the person you see in the mirror today. Now, the questions get even tougher. Is this the person that you want your future spouse to know? Is this the person you want your children to know? These realities are your next step. How have you prepared yourself for that life and is the church

even part of it anymore? Where does Christ fit in with all the job interviews, work schedule, etc.? Parents and family members of our graduates, you have brought your children up in the church, you have prepared them for the moments that lay ahead, for the next phases of their lives. Be encouraged, be joyous, and continue to be a source of inspiration and knowledge for these young people. As they progress in life it may seem like they need you less and less as each year passes. This may be the perception, but it is not the reality. You have been where your children are going. You have basked in the glories that life may bring while also suffering in the moments of hardship and temptations that they too will face. In all of these questions and these new realities there is one thing that remains, one thing that will always be constant in their life…and that is Christ and His church. Whether you have been an active part of it through your childhood or through your college years or not, Christ has never left your side and never will. We celebrate and are thankful for all of your hard work and for all of the accomplishments of our young people. But what must always be kept in mind is that education and dedication must be sealed with the consecration of the Holy Spirit, even as we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost in a short while. We know that our graduates have worked hard and we offer to them our prayers, that the inspiration of God will always be in harmony with the effort that they put forward in fulfilling the plan God has for them in their lives, so that they will hear him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant; for you were faithful in everything. I will now put you in charge of greater things.” As graduation approaches, our entire community of St Paul thanks God for our graduates and the accomplishments that have culminated in this great accomplishment. We look forward to the amazing things that you will bring to this world and back to our community. Wherever life’s journey may take you, know that the journey has been guided along through the prayers, the love and the support of this community. Congratulations…now go forth and become His disciples!

As we complete another year of Sunday School, I want to thank our teachers for their time and commitment in teaching our children our Orthodox Faith. This year we had 32 weeks of class from September through May. We appreciate all that they do for this important Ministry of our church. Thank you to all the parents for your commitment and participation in our Sunday School. Without the children, it wouldn't be possible. On May 21st, we held our Sunday School Recognition in church followed by a family picnic. Close to 100 people attended this picnic. Thank you to Elena Giatis for chairing this event and her helpers. It's amazing to see that the end of the school year has arrived! The end of the school year is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our school and it's students and acknowledge our committed staff. So many things have been accomplished this year. Our students have been involved in an extraordinary number of activities. Of course, we should not forget the tremendous amount of learning which has taken place during the school year. Throughout all of these activities, our students have demonstrated great character. There are countless people to whom I owe an expression of gratitude and appreciation. Many thanks to our P.T.O President, parents, and volunteers, who so willingly support our school programs and fundraisers. Your presence and support make a much stronger school. We hope we can continue to count on your support in the years to come. Special thanks to our teachers for all of their outstanding work with our students. We are all dedi-cated to your children's success. So, to all of our students, teachers and parents, I would like to say THANK YOU for another amazing school year. Lastly, I would like to thank Fr. Costas P. Keares and our Pastoral Assistant/ Youth Director Mr. George Athanasiou, for their much needed emotional and spiritual support. In planning ahead for the next school year, it will be necessary to make some changes. Be sure to check our website for more information. Please know that Greek School Summer Camp is back, June 12—17, 2017. This is a unique and exciting camp designed to highlight the creative and playful sides of children, all in a Greek educational environment. This camp will be memorable experience for all participants. On behalf of our entire staff, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer! After searching for months, our Choir is pleased to announce that we have a new organist. We welcome Rachel Nelson to our St. Paul family. Choir hosted the Mid-Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians meeting and workshop on May 20th here at St. Paul. Thank you to all those who attended and to all our choir members for providing the delicious breakfast and lunch. The last Sunday for Choir will be June 25th. All three dance groups have been working so hard to master their performances for next month’s festival. This year seems to have gone by even faster than previous years and I know all the instructors agree that we are eager to have our dancers show off what they have been working on all throughout the year! We can’t wait to see you all under the tent in July!!!

Please note that since Sunday School has finished for the year, practice will begin at 11:30 each Sunday. That time will still allow for dancers to come down from church and grab a snack before heading to their practice location.

We are so excited to be participating in Greek Day at

Kennywood Park on Tuesday, July 25 again this year. We will spend the day enjoying the park, performing some of our dances, and catching up with camp friends! Performing participants get into the park for free that day!!

Koulouriakia Class Recap On Wednesday May 17th the Philoptochos held its fourth Greek Cooking class and once again the turnout was amazing with 60 ladies and gentleman in attendance. We learned how to make the yummy koulourakia, we mastered the braiding, learned variations to add, and took home a few dozen cookies to show off our new talent to family and friends. A huge thank you to our instructor, Tessie Lekas, and her crew which included Clara Daniels, Kathy Nikolaou, Mary Pagonakis, Barbara Pateras and , Roberta Vasilakis. These ladies all came to the church much earlier in the day and helped prepare all the dough that we used to make these delicious cookies. The batches they made equaled well over 2000 koulourakia. Ο Θεός να ευλογεί τα χέρια σας! The participation and support of the classes has grown with each session and the energy, excitement , and fellowship it has generated is way beyond any expectation that we ever imagined. A huge thank you to all our instructors and their assistants, the set up and clean-up crews, and to all who have participated in them. These classes wouldn’t be possible without our St Paul Village of family and friends. We will take the summer off and God willing our next class will be in September. Η Ελληνικη Γωνια ~ Μαρία Καρλατήρα (Μαράκι)

Αγαπητοί μου αναγνώστες, Kαλό μήνα! Νά που και το όμορφο καλοκαιράκι μας κατέφθασαι, μαζί με τα σχέδια των διακοπών. Τι θα λέγατε να κάνουμε και την πρώτη μας καλοκαιρινή βολτούλα. Ετοιμαστήται λοιπόν να επισκευτούμε την όμορφη κοντέσα του Ιονίου πελάγους...Καλώς ήλθατε στην Κεφαλονιά. Ένα νησί καταπράσινο, πνιγμένο στα

έλατα (με το ελατόδασος του Αίνο), στο γεμάτο εξωτικές παραλίες με πεντακάθαρες θάλασσες, πραγματικά σαν κρύσταλλο. Μετό αρχαιολογικό

μουσείο της Παλαιολιθικής, της Μυκηναικής περιόδου και της Ρωμαικής. Μετά ενδιαφέροντα σπήλαια της (Δρογκαράτης και Μελισσάνης). Μετά γραφικά χρωματιστά δίπατα αρχοντικά και ίσως να αισθανθήται την παρουσία κάποιας αρχόντισσας τυλιγμένη στο κρινολίνο της, να χορεύει στα σαλόνια των παλατιών. Μετήν Μονή Κηπουραίων, χτισμένη το 1759 σε βράχο πάνω από τη θάλασσα και προσφέρει το πιο συναρπαστικό ηλιοβασίλεμα. Φίλοι μου, ο κάθε τόπος εκτός από την ιστορία, τα γράμματα και τις τέχνες, στον πολιτισμό του, παίζου μεγάλο ρόλο και τα τοπικά του προιόντα. Και σ’αυτό το νησί, τον πρωτεύοντα ρόλο έχει η χιλιοτραγουδημένη –ρομπόλα-Αυτό το υπέροχο κρασί των ‘’Θεών και των Αθανάτων’’ επείρε τ’ όνομα του, από το σχήμα του καρπού της που μοιάζει με τον γεωμετρικό ρόμβο. Η ρομπόλα είναι τόσο δεμένη με την ιστορία του νησιού, με ρίζες απο τα πολύ παλιά χρόνια. Και ο μύθος λέει, όταν δίωξανε οι Θεοί τον Κέφαλο (γιό του Ερμή) από την Αθήνα και μετά από πολλές περιπλανήσεις καταφεύγει στην Αθηναία Γή στη σημερινή Κεφαλονιά. Μαζί του όμως έφερε και ένα κλήμα γιά να θυμάτε την πατρίδα του. Μόλις πάτησε το πόδι του στο νησί, φύτεψε το κλήμα το οποίο φύτρωσε παντού και είναι μιά σπάνια ποικιλία. Το νησί πήρε το όνομα του Κέφαλου. Πολλά τα τοπικά προιόντα και μιά παραδοσιακή κεφαλονίτικη κουζίνα. Δοκιμάστε την ρομπόλα....και τα ξαναλέμε. Και κλίνοντας, εσείς μήν μου ανησυχήται, τον άλλο μήνα πάλι κάτι καλό θα σας έχω.
