Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas “You are anxious and worried about many things. ONE THING IS NEEDFUL.” (Luke 10:41) The above quote was read at the last major feast of the liturgical year, the feast of the Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary, and it will also be read at the first major feast of the liturgical year, the feast of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. September marks the start of a new Ecclesiastical Year and the beginning of many of our Church ministries. New beginnings are always opportunities to re-evaluate the path that we are presently walking as well as to reflect on future goals and vision. Do we find meaning in what we do? How can we discover the abundant and joyous life Christ has promised us? Can the Church help me in this journey of life? The answer to this last question is a resounding YES! This positive YES, however, depends on how much time and effort we are willing to exert in a search for God and His peace. Jesus said to a friend who’s life was quite busy and full, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. ONE THING IS NEEDFUL!” (Luke 10:41) As we begin a new month and a new start, let us each encourage one another to make a new commitment in seeking out “the one thing needful.” The Church Fathers emphasize that the greatest way to discover the “one thing needful” is to enter into an intimate relationship with our Lord through WORSHIP and growing in knowledge about our faith. Make it a point this year to learn more about what worship is, how to worship, and of course, find the time to worship God as frequently as possible! For example, make a decision, as a family unity, to regularly attend the Divine Liturgy each and every Sunday. Make it a priority and put it in your calendar. Prepare each week and commit to attending regularly. If you have children, make a commitment to SIGN THEM UP and to bring them on time to our Sunday School every week, beginning on Sunday, September 10th. We offer a class for 3 year olds to attend with one of their parents. We continue by offering classes to preschoolers all the way to 12th grade. Your children will not only learn valuable lessons about our faith but they will also connect with other children their age. This is a most important experience for all children to have. We also offer a variety of ministries for all ages. Come to the

Parish Fair and sign them up for HOPE/JOY, GOYA, Hellenic Dancers, Altar Boys (3rd – 12th grade) etc. For all the adults in our parish, we offer a variety of opportunities for you to stay focused throughout this new Ecclesiastical year and to be mindful of “the one thing needful.” We offer two opportunities on Sundays during the time the children are in Sunday School.

1. For all the young parents with children up to 6th grade, the class Coffee and Conversation will resume in the hall led by Jonathan and Kristi Tartara.

2. For all other Adults, the Adult Catechism class offered by Elaine Poulos will resume in the Teen Room.

We also have two other opportunities for all parishioners.

1. The video and discussion series we started in the Spring, Journey to Fullness, will resume on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. starting Thursday, September 7th in place of the regular bible study.

2. We will also offer the GriefShare series for all those grieving over the loss of a loved one starting on Wednesday, September 20th.

As our Lord reminded Martha in the follow passage, He is reminding all of us as well….“You are anxious and worried about many things. ONE THING IS NEED-FUL.” (Luke 10:41). Make Christ and His Holy Church a priority. Be involved, be invested in the life of our parish. We need you. YOU are an important piece of the mosaic we call the St. Paul Community! May we be mindful that our relationship with Christ and His Holy Church is the priority in all that we do throughout this New Ecclesiastical Year!

The Meaning of the Cross Holy Cross - September 14

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”

Mark 8:34-9

Sunday School Director

Welcome back to another wonderful Sunday School year. We are so blessed to be a part of this journey with you. This year's theme is Prayer. Once a month, each class will have a lesson on a incorporating prayer into their daily lives. The younger classes will have an ongoing project each month to help them create a prayer book of their own. A mailing went out to all Sunday School-aged families of our parish with registration information and the calendar for the year. Please make sure to update your family’s information and post the calendar in a place of importance in your home. On Sunday September 10th, we begin our 2017-2018 school year. Immediately before Holy Communion, Fr. Costas will ask all teachers to come forward for a blessing. Following Holy Communion, all students will proceed downstairs to their class. Please join us in the Social Hall for the Parish Fair after Liturgy. You can also register or update your family’s information at that time. We look forward to seeing you there. Sunday, September 17, following Holy Communion, all students and teachers will remain in church for the brief service of the Elevation of the Holy Cross. Father Costas will invite us to receive some basil and proceed to class. Again, we will be keeping track of attendance, so make the commitment as a family to prioritize Sunday mornings as the Lord's day, attend Liturgy beginning at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday School immediately following Holy Communion. We look forward to welcoming you all back to Sunday School!

for Parents with Kids age 0—6th Grade Join us for Coffee and Conversation in the church hall after Holy Communion to meet other parents and learn about the Orthodox faith. If the partition is closed, you will likely find us in that section of the hall. This Fall we will be discussing, Parenting Toward the Kingdom: Orthodox Principles of Child-Rearing by Philip Mamalakis. This is a wonderful book and you are sure to be encouraged as you work towards raising your children in the faith. We will be discussing excerpts of the book, so if you cannot make it every week or keep up on reading, it is okay! If you would like to purchase the book, you can find it in the church bookstore. If you have any questions, please email Kristi Tartara at [email protected]. For announcements, please join us on Facebook. Search for St. Paul Coffee & Conversation and request to join the group.

The 2017-2018 school year is fast approaching! I hope that you and your family have enjoyed the summer and that you are looking forward to the new school year as much as we do. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back all of our returning students and families as well as those who are new to us this year. We are excited about the start of the new school year and the opportunity to work with you and your children. As you know, Greek School starts for students on Monday September 11, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. Fr. Costas P. Keares will perform the Ayiasmos (blessings of the waters service). Children, parents, staff, and classrooms will be blessed. We offer classes K-6th Grade, as well as Adult levels for beginners, intermediate, and advance placements. We will be welcoming two new teachers this year. * Mrs. Annoula Tsonton – Kindergarten Teacher * Miss Irene Dimarhos - Third Grade Teacher The beginning of the school year is around the corner. To those parents who have taken care of all of the registration obligations, we thank them. To those who have not yet completed the registration process, please submit the forms as soon as possible. Early registration will help us with student placement and get us started quicker and more efficiently on the first day of school. PLEASE NOTE: Tuition Fees are due on the first day of classes.

Please visit our table during the Parish Fair on September 10th, 2017 to meet our teachers, view the curriculum and the text books we are using. Registration forms will be available on that day. The Greek School wants the very best for every student. In order to meet our goal, we need your full

support and cooperation. Students success depends on strong partnership between parents and the school. I encourage you to join us at school activities, establishing a strong foundation, and being positive models for your children. Together let us share with them that learning the Greek language will open new horizons and will be a major asset for their educational future. Our rich cultural heritage will inspire them on this journey of knowledge. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me @ 216.524.1766. I look forward to working with you and your children throughout the school year to provide a productive and safe learning environment that supports students success.

Time passes so quickly!! It has already been many weeks since we entertained all the festival guests with our performances, and now it is time to start again. As the finishing touches are being put on the 2017-2018 Dance calendar, I would be remiss not to once again thank everyone that made this year’s dance performances a success!!

First, I would like to thank Fr. Costas. Your love and guidance with this program has allowed us to flourish! THANK YOU!

George Athansiou. You were such a helpful hand whenever the dance program needed you! The kids always enjoyed your visits to our practices and I know the instructors appreciated the encouragement and support as well! THANK YOU!

To all the families involved in the dance program. Your support in this ministry is vital! From brining dancers back and forth to practice, to always pitching in when necessary and ALL the help in the fitting rooms again this year—THANK YOU!

To all the instructors who are so committed to this program; Georgann Poulos, Jamie Steffas, Christine Alex, Annoula Tsonton, Stamatia Giatis, Elena Giatis, Tina Asmis, and Peter Keares. You give so much of your time researching and teaching dances! Your patience and instruction are reflected each time the dancers perform. I again cannot THANK YOU enough for all the time and energy you give forth

To the five Senior Dancers that graduated out of the Dance Program this year, Sophia Cook, Christina Keares, Soultana Lignos, Stefanie Mazzeo, and Peter Wilson, you have been a wonderful part of this program from day one and it is awesome to have watched you grow through the years. You have been leaders in the Senior Group and you will be missed by all. THANK YOU!! Good luck as you all start this next chapter of your lives!!

And finally to ALL of the St. Paul Hellenic Dancers, there are not enough words that can describe how thankful the instructors are for each of you. You have given so much of your time to

come to practices, you have worked diligently to learn steps and dances, and you have shined every time you were under that tent! All of our dancers represent St. Paul with such grace and kefi and we couldn’t be more thankful for each and everyone one of you!! WE THANK YOU AND LOVE YOU ALL!!!

As we look ahead, we have some very exciting things planned for the new year! If your dancer is in 4 year old Preschool starting this

coming school year we look forward to them joining our program (this is new from previous years). I am available to discuss this change if anyone has any questions. Registration forms for the 2017-2018 year can be found on the church website and at the Dance Table at the Parish Fair on September 10, 2017. Our instructors will also be on hand to meet all their new dancers! Registration forms and payment are due October 31, 2017. Forms can be completed during the Parish Fair or on our website.

We look forward to a wonderful new season!!

“Living the Beatitudes” Formerly tit led: Happy in the Lord”

by Kyriaki and Thomas FitzGerald

The Beatitudes contain many of the most important teachings of Jesus,

emphasizing the responsibilities of the follower of Christ both to God and to others.

For centuries, the Beatitudes have been used for basic instruction in Christian faith and living.

Here, the authors explore the eight Beatitudes with wonderful insight as to how

they relate to us in our everyday life.

Are you curious? How are we to be Happy in the Lord?

Then please come and study along with us this insightfully written book on a “God-pleasing life…

A Blessing to all who read it.” Rev. Stanley Harakas

Tuesday mornings 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Classes Begin September 10th!

Adult Sunday Catechism Immediately following Holy Communion

In the Teen Room Our current Book being Studied: “God and You, Person to Person: Developing a Daily Personal Relationship with Jesus”

by Anthony Coniaris

How does one come to Know God? …to have a relationship with God?

This study offers a fuller understanding of what it means to be part of the

Orthodox Church and how we are called through the practices of Orthodoxy into a relationship with our Creator, God.

How Prayer, the Sacraments, our Worship, the Creed, the Trinity, our Theolo-gy, Sacred Tradition, the Bible, our relationship with others, the very Resur-rection of Christ Himself are all portals, doorways, passages though which

we grow our relationship with Christ our God. Do you ever feel that God is not present? Then please partake in the study of our faith to help discover that truly He is always with us. And how we are called into His presence at all times.

Festival Update

We are happy to report that with the hard work and dedication from many of our parishioners, friends, Channel’s 3—5—19, corporate and business sponsors, and donors our Festival realized another banner year. As of this notice, our income was $366,347.53! Barring any additional incidental expenses that may not have been recorded as of yet and the continued sale of pastry items, our net profit should be approximately $190,000.00! A job well done by all. Thank you!!!

The Power of the Cross SEPT 14 - EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

One day 60 years ago, after suffering many years in the work camps of Siberia, Aleksander Solzhenitsyn, the famous Russian intellectual and dissident, had fallen into despair. Like other prisoners, he had worked in the fields day after day, in rain and sun, during summer and winter. His days were filled with backbreaking labor and slow starvation. On this particular day, the hopelessness of his situation became too much. Sozhenitsyn saw no reason to continue living and trying to fight the system. He thought his life was meaningless since he would die in this Siberian prison. His life made no difference to the world. So he gave up. Laying his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to the side of the work field and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and if he did not respond, the guard would beat him to death. He had seen it happen to many other prisoners. As he was waiting, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly, he lifted his eyes and saw a skinny, old prisoner squat down next to him. The man said nothing. Instead, he took a stick and traced the sign of the Cross at Solzhenitsyn’s feet. The man then got back up and returned to his work. As Solzhenitsyn stared at the sign of the Cross, his entire perspective changed. He knew that he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet in that moment, he understood that there was something greater than all the evil he saw in prison. There was something even greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that the hope of all humankind was represented in that simple Cross. And through the power of the Cross, anything was possible. The Cross shone forth light in the midst of the greatest darkness. Solzhenitsyn slowly got back up, picked up his shov-el, and went back to work. Nothing outward had changed, but inside, he saw a sign from God— he received hope. Years later, Solzhenitsyn’s writings would enlighten the entire world, telling them not only about the horrors of the Soviet gulag, but also witnessing to the depth of the human soul, the sovereignty of God and the hope of the Cross.

THE ASCETIC LIVES OF MOTHERS ~ A PRAYER BOOK FOR ORTHODOX MOMS Annalisa Boyd knows motherhood—its challenges, its joys, and its potential for spiritual growth. In this prayer book she offers a wide selection of prayers mothers can use to intercede for their families as well as to grow in virtue themselves.

SAINT NEKTARIOS ~ THE WONDERWORKER, BISHOP OF PENTAPOLIS ~ REPENTANCE AND CONFESSION C onf ess ion i s t r ul y a d iv ine commandment. This is why the person who has sinned feels his heart burdened and does not find relief unless he confesses his sin. God came to the earth in order to invite all them who have sinned to repent, and, on account of His infinite love for man, He left the sacrament of confession within His Church, so that they who have sinned may receive forgiveness, find peace, and acquire spiritual health.

THE HOLISTIC CHRISTIAN WOMAN Is there such a thing as a Holistic Christian Woman? Of course! God created us beautifully holistic! So often, holistic health and healing are associated with new age ideas or Eastern philoso-phies, rather than the Judeo-Christian faith. This is unfortunate in that it can lead many women on a detour of faith during their quest for health and wellness. Based on the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, The Holistic Christian Woman takes you through a 10-week journey that will get you on track for a Spiritually, Emotionally and Physically healthy life. This uplifting and inspirational book can be used as an individual study, or within a group setting. It arms you with knowledge to make choices that can prevent and even turn disease around. Let this book be your guide to heal the heart, mind, soul, and body!

Remember the Church in Your Will

MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Throughout our life, from birth to death, the Church offers us grace and power by which to live. It inspires us, prays for us, heals us, and teaches us how to confess our sins and how to forgive each other. The Church baptizes those who wish to follow Christ. It blesses our marriages and sends us to our eternal home with prayers and blessings at our death.

The Church is the only thing that accompanies us throughout our life and beyond. We support it in many ways and especially through our financial gifts. Do you want to make a difference in the lives of those who benefit from St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church? If so, you may wish to consider a charitable bequest.

WHAT IS A BEQUEST? A charitable bequest is a method for parishioners and friends to perpetuate their interest and support for their Greek Orthodox Church. Your will can be drafted to leave either a specific gift or a percentage of your estate to the Church. A specific gift can be a dollar amount, a particular piece of real estate or personal property. A residuary gift is either a specific percentage of your estate or it can be the remainder of your estate after you have provided for your family, or other charitable interests which are important to you. For more information, contact the church office at 440-237-8998;someone will be in contact with you.

Our bookstore gift certificates are the perfect gift for every occasion. Stop by to purchase today in any denomination.

THE SWEETNESS OF GRACE ~ STORIES OF CHRISTIAN TRIAN AND VICTORY The Sweetness of Grace is a collection of stories derived from conversations with Orthodox nuns, monks, and laypeople, along with experiences of Orthodox life in South Korea, Greece, and North America.

WE PRAY Written in expressive verse, We Pray invites children and their parents to explore some of the unique aspects of Orthodox Christian prayer life. Through reflections on topics like icons, the Jesus Prayer, and the liturgy, children are invited to see the beauty in our way of praying and understand better the purpose of Orthodox prayer.

We would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all those who have made a commitment to our 2017 Stewardship program. Your generous donation keeps the doors open, the lights on, the staff to assist your needs, and the ministries running. If you are behind on your pledge, take a moment to catch up; if you haven’t made a pledge commitment, take a moment to complete the bottom portion of your statement, and as always, feel free to call the church office if you have any questions. Remember, a pledge card should be submitted each year as your individual situation may change. Consider increasing your pledge if you have committed the same amount for the past five years or more.

As of August 16, 2017, we have 397 families who have pledged 284,321. Please remember, part of being a mem-ber of the parish is committing your time, talent, AND treasure.
