This Masterplan is made up of a series of

proposals (01-10). These will be delivered in

phases as funding becomes available. The

first Phase will focus solely on flood risk

and mine entries

(see Pxx – Pxx on the “Remediation Project”).

Key Proposals

Flood Risk: As part of Phase 1, a new surface

watercourse will carry the Blaengafog and Castlewood

streams. Water will be attenuated in ponds in the east

with potential for a further pond in the north should a

hydro-electric scheme be developed (09).

Ground Stability: There are 20 shafts and 11 adits

identified for treatment as part of the Phase 1 project.

Ground stability is considered further on Pxx

Highway Network & Access: Primary access to the

site will be via a new junction to the north east (04).

Internal road circulation would be considered as part of

any proposals brought forward for the potential

development areas. Entry to the ironworks area will

continue via Big Arch with a proposal for formalised car

parking, resurfacing and improved arrival signage (01).

Leisure Route: The leisure route will continue to

operate along the eastern boundary of the site. The

Cornish Engine House will incorporate a “Discovery

Trail” cycle hub with a spur from the leisure route (08)

Listed and Scheduled Structures: Proposals for an

Ironworks Trail (02) would see the stabilisation of the

furnace bank & NCB building as well as improved

interpretation and disabled vehicular access. Subject to

steady growth in visitors, funding will be sought to

restore the Engine House as a café / bike hire venue (02)

Biodiversity & Ecological: There are numerous

proposals for biodiversity enhancements including a

community food zone (07) & landscape corridor (05)

Western Area: Wind &/or solar energy generation will

be explored for the Byrgwm and adjacent hillside (09)

Residential Development: Land is allocated in three

areas (06) for potential residential development based

on a review of ground stability.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Three areas have been identified as sites for potential

future residential development (based on what we know

about ground condition).

No current discussions with developers

Things to prioritise in any future discussions:

o Can the old terraces be reinstated?

o Any parcels of land for available for self-build?

o Try to avoid generic housing estate feel?
