February 25 & 26, 2017 - EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Year A Issue Number 730 The Massabielle The Weekly Newsletter of St Bernadette’s Parish Community, Castle Hill, NSW Next Week: 1st Sunday of Lent - Yr A Genesis 2:7-9,3:1-7; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11 Feast Day this Week Wednesday 1 March - Ash Wednesday BISHOP VINCENT TO VISIT IN MARCH: The Bishop of Parramatta, Bishop Vincent Long, will celebrate the 6.00pm Sunday night Mass on March 26. All are welcome. Supper will be provided in the hall following the Mass. WELCOME to our catechists who are being commissioned at the 10.30 Mass today. Today’s Readings First Reading: Isaiah 49:14-15 Zion was saying, The Lord has abandoned me, the Lord has forgotten me. Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail to cherish the son of her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5 People must think of us as Christs servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust. Not that it makes the slightest difference to me whether you, or indeed any human tribunal, find me worthy or not. I will not even pass judgement on myself. True, my conscience does not reproach me at all, but that does not prove that I am acquitted: the Lord alone is my judge. There must be no passing of premature judgement. Leave that until the Lord comes: he will light up all that is hidden in the dark and reveal the secret intentions of mens hearts. Then will be the time for each one to have whatever praise he deserves, from God. Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34 Jesus said to his disciples: No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money. That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to his span of life? And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work or spin; yet I assure you that not even Solomon in all his regalia was robed like one of these. Now if that is how God clothes the grass in the field which is there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you men of little faith? So do not worry, do not say, What are we to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed? It is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.MONSIGNOR JOHN TO LEAVE FOR ROME Archbishop Fisher has appointed me the Rector of Domus Australia, Rome. I will be leaving St Bernadettes on Easter Monday. I fly to Rome on Anzac Day to take up my Rome appointment on May 1. The Parramatta Dioceses personnel board will meet before Easter and hopefully at that meeting another Parish Priest will be appointed. I dont know who that will be and moreover I will have no say in the appointment of my successor. I will keep you informed if and when I hear anything. Castle Hill is the largest parish in the Parramatta Diocese. It is undoubtedly the premier parish and to be Parish Priest of St Bernadettes is a prestigious appointment. The parish runs smoothly with all key people focused on their responsibilities with the ultimate task being to bring about the kingdom of God in Castle Hill. Serving the parishioners is a key priority. The parish is debt-free. To find out more about where I will be living in Rome you can Google Domus Australia(not now – at the end of Mass!) or go to the website at www.domusaustralia.org. Arriverderci. Monsignor John. ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES 6.45am, 9.15am, 12 noon and 7.30pm Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The law of fasting binds those who have completed their eighteenth year until the beginning of the sixtieth year; the law of abstaining from eating meat next Wednesday binds those who have completed their fourteenth year.

BISHOP VINCENT TO VISIT IN MARCH: The Bishop of Parramatta, Bishop Vincent Long, will celebrate the 6.00pm Sunday night Mass on March 26. All are welcome. Supper will be provided in the hall following the Mass.

WELCOME to our catechists who are being commissioned at the 10.30 Mass today.

Today’s Readings

First Reading: Isaiah 49:14-15

Zion was saying, ‘The Lord has abandoned me, the Lord has forgotten me.’ Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail to cherish the son of her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5

People must think of us as Christ’s servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust. Not that it makes the slightest difference to me whether you, or indeed any human tribunal, find me worthy or not. I will not even pass judgement on myself. Leave that until the Lord comes: he will light up all that is hidden in the dark and reveal the secret intentions of men’s hearts. Then will be the time for each one to have whatever praise he deserves, from God. Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money. ‘That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Reflection

One of the hardest things to do in our busy modern lives is to live in the present moment. Our

lives are almost consumed by a mixture of anticipating what we have to do next and reliving

what we have done. We are constantly making

plans for catching up with friends, organising chores that need to be done, working or studying

to ‘get ahead’ and create a better future for ourselves. We live our lives in the future and in

anticipation of what is to come so much so that we

often don’t seem to actually enjoy the event when it comes because we’re already planning what we’ll

be doing next. In this incredible rush of living our lives forward, suddenly out of nowhere we’ll be

swamped with regrets about some mistake in the past or how we might have handled a situation

better.

There is an incredible challenge to simply be mindful of the now. If we can be mindful of what

we’re doing now then we can be purposeful and intentional about our actions rather than operating

habitually on auto pilot or operating reactively.

When we live in the now, instead of the once was or soon to be, then we find ourselves actually

listening to our friends when they speak to us; savouring the food we eat; noticing both the

beauty and the pain around us; and sometimes

even becoming aware of the presence of God around and within us.

Today’s gospel tells us not to worry about what is to come but be attentive to the way we are

living our lives. It tells us to be attentive to living in accordance with the will of God and when we do

that it will be amazing just how other things seem

to fall into place. Greg Sunter

World Day of Prayer

This annual event dates back to the 19th century and brings together Christian

traditions for an annual day of prayer and worship. The World Day of Prayer symbol was developed by the women of Ireland and adopted as the international logo in 1982. Its design is made up of arrows converging from the four points of the compass, persons kneeling in prayer, the Celtic cross, and the circle, representing the world and our unity through all our diversity. The WDP committee of the Philippines have prepared the service for this year’s celebration.

The theme: Am I being unfair to you?
