Old Bar Public School Success by the Sea Newsletter Principal’s Message Autumn is my favourite season! I’m making up as many excuses as possible to get outside and enjoy this glorious weather. After spend- ing many hours each day in front of the computer or on the end of a telephone, it’s a treat for me to do ‘playground’ duty. I enjoy watch- ing children involved in their play. There is competition for playground space with soccer, touch football and cricket all vying for their own patch of ground. On the concrete areas, handball is in full swing. I’m always amazed by the skill levels of some children. There have been a couple of incidents in the past week where children who have been playing competitive games have become upset or angry when they ‘lose.’ In these cases I talk to the students about being a ‘gracious’ loser. Acknowledging their oppo- nent and congratulating the win- ner is another aspect of learning to lose. This might be a discussion to have with your children as we ap- proach the footy and netball season. School Times 9.00am – 3.00pm One morning recently I walked out of the office and into the foy- er of the administration block at 9.05am. I could barely get to the door for the number of late arriv- als at school! Di, in the office in- formed me that it is a regular oc- currence. Some families /children are often late. This is not okay. During the first 15 minutes of school, children receive important information. There are notices/ac- colades given during the assembly and teachers generally talk to the students about what is happening in their day. If a child is consist- ently late to school – 10 mins per day – that equates to 50 mins per week. Do the maths and work out how much this is over a 12month period. Here is another ‘life skill’ worth reinforcing. Late arrivals are monitored and in some cases, referrals are made to the Home School Liaison Officer for follow-up. A Pat on the Back! At last week’s P&C meeting special mention was made of 2 of our Stu- dent Support workers. and Alan Sercombe consistently go above and beyond their duties to provide ‘a little extra’ for our stu-dents. They are a part of a wonder-ful support team at Old Bar. We are indeed lucky to have these moti-vated, compassionate and hard-working individuals on our side. Big thanks Aunty Linda and Alan!

For Your InformationNational Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) If your child is currently in Year 3, 5, 7 or 9, they’ll sit NAPLAN tests this May. Despite what you may have heard, there’s no reason to panic or start an intensive study schedule for your child. Sushi TrainBrown rice sushi rolls are a nutri-tious change to pack for school lunches. Unlike white rice sushi, they can be made the night be-fore, and the filling can be adapted to suit your child’s preferences. Pack in a chiller bag with an ice-pack and include some little soy sauce fish. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/en/

Wild Australia AppYour child can use this terrific app as an interactive educational tool at Taronga Zoo in Sydney or at Taron-ga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo. Wild Australia can also be used at home to discover more about the zoos’ amazing animals and interest-ing keepers. NetballFrom next week, there will be local netball teams using our school facilities for training. I love this connection to community.

Morning Tea With The PrincipalI think it’s time! I need a morn-ing tea to welcome new parents and touch base with old. I’ll check with Stu and Steve at FLOW and see if we can meet there next Thursday 27th March, from about 9.15am. Look forward to seeing some new faces. I’ll confirm and send home a note early next week.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Due to the high number of chil-dren with food allergies and intol-erances, we are unable to have children’s birthday cakes shared with other students at school.

Mia PaskeHello, my name is Mia from 4/5T. I was surprised when my teacher called my name out, however I feel really honoured to be selected into the SRC. Cricket Report Last Wednesday the Old Bar Boys Cricket Team travelled to Gloucester to play in the PSSA Knockout Competition. The toss was won by Gloucester and they decided to send Old Bar in to bat on a good wicket. Jacob Nash scored a patient seven runs until he played across the line to a good length ball and was bowled.Daniel Periera played some strong shots through square leg but was out to a sky-shot to mid wicket. The team used all their 25 overs to be 9 for 79 at lunch.

Jake Hines cleaned bowled D Stone with his first ball but C Dunlop and B Berry scored freely in a 27 run part-nership. Daniel kept the pressure on the opposition taking 3 wickets for 8 runs, Tom Haines picked up two last wickets, but Berry batted his side to victory with a well made 26 runs.

The team enjoyed a great day of cricket and represented their school in exemplary fashion. Thanks to the parent who accom-panied their children to the match.
