During 2012, AFPMASH’s Board of Directors, committees and members worked hard to accomplish different goals, all a part of AFP’s long-range strategic plan, required to be a Ten Star Chapter. A total of ten goals, three compulsory and seven from a list of optional ones, had to be accomplished and a nomination form submitted to verify their completion. "Receiving the Ten Star Chapter designation is very exciting and is a major accomplishment for our chapter,” said Shellie Duchek, president of AFPMASH. “It represents the hard work and dedication the Board of Directors and members put into increasing awareness of philanthropy in our community and educating professionals in the field of fundraising." The three compulsory goals included meeting the deadline for the 2012 Chapter Leadership Form and completing the balance of the Accord process, holding an event in 2012 that focused on the importance of ethics and ethical fundraising, and participating in the 2012 Chapter Treasury Gift Campaign for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy. Some of the optional objectives the chapter completed were increasing chapter membership from the previous year and organizing an event promoting the importance of the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) designation. After receiving news of their award, the chapter was then recognized at the International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego, CA in April 2013. Additionally, AFPMASH earned the privilege to use a special Ten Star logo that is now proudly displayed on their website, newsletter and other materials. “I want to congratulate the Mahoning-Shenango Chapter, which is playing a key role in the Mahoning and Shenango Valley areas in promoting ethical and effective fundraising and educating the public about the importance of philanthropy and wise giving,” said Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of AFP. “Our Ten Star Chapters have demonstrated outstanding programming and leadership for fundraising, and I’m pleased to recognize their outstanding efforts.” The Association of Fundraising Professionals is the largest association of professional fundraisers in the world and currently has 232 chapters. AFPMASH was one of only 112 chapters to receive this special recognition. AFPMASH EARNS 2012 TEN STAR CHAPTER DESIGNATION

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

In our last newsletter I mentioned that AFP’s resolution for 2013 was to provide programs and

conferences that are not only educational, but exciting as well. As we approach the year’s halfway point, I

am pleased to say that so far we have stuck to our resolution.

Over the past seven months we have held five programs and a conference featuring Barlow Mann of the

Sharpe Group. The feedback we’ve received on each of these programs has been extremely positive, and

we are looking forward to the programs coming up in the fall.

As we enter the final months of 2013, I will be completing my second term as President of the

Association of Fundraising Professionals Mahoning-Shenango Chapter, and I would like to say thank you

to all of our members for your support the last two years. Together we have

accomplished so much, which is evidenced by becoming a Ten Star Chapter

Award winner!!!

I would especially like to thank the Board of Directors for their hard work and

dedication to the chapter. It has been an honor working with each and every

one of you and seeing the leadership you provide. I can honestly say I

couldn’t have done it without all of you behind me.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Shellie Duchek

YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY

Do you know kids who have done something good for our community? Want to see them recognized for their fundraising talents?

The Youth in Philanthropy Committee is launching a new initiative to recognize young people that are making a difference by organizing and/or participating in a fundraiser. We are looking for young fundraisers (age 18 or younger) who have shown leadership, organizational abilities, originality and creativity and have raised funds within the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys that benefited a non-profit organization, locally, nationally or internationally. Groups of kids who worked together on a fundraising project can also be recognized.

Recommended individuals and groups will receive an “Honorary AFP Mahoning-Shenango Chapter Fundraiser” certificate. They could even be featured in a future AFPMASH newsletter and be commended

for their efforts as guests at an upcoming AFPMASH program!

Please send the individual’s/group’s name, contact information and description of their efforts including benefiting organization to Casey Bertolette, Youth in Philanthropy Chair, at

Casey can also be reached at (330)-744-3147 for any questions or additional information.
