Sid J. (Sidney John) Hare (January 20, 1860–October 25, 1938) was born in Louisville, Kentucky, toChristopher Hare and Isadore Bethurum Hare. When he was eight, the family moved to Kansas City,Missouri. In 1885 Hare married Mathilda A. Korfhage (1861–1953), with whom he had a daughter, Nell(1886–1971), and a son, Sidney Herbert (1888–1960).
Hare joined the Kansas City Engineer’s Office in 1885 and worked there for the next 11 years as asurveyor, draftsman, and photographer. During this period he assisted landscape architect George E.Kessler in implementing his parks and boulevards plan, which transformed the landscape of Kansas City.Hare left the Engineer’s Office in 1896 to become superintendent of Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City.He established his own firm in 1902, which would eventually become the Hare and Hare Company afterhis son joined him in 1910. The father and son business made a significant impact on the landscape andcity planning of various locations in the Midwest.
According to his 1932 reminiscence, Hare first developed a keen interest in the subject of biblical prophecyin 1887. He began to study Christian Science in 1899 and joined The Mother Church in 1903. Not longafter that, while looking at photos of The Mother Church Extension, which was under construction, hedeveloped the theory that the building fulfilled the prophecy of a temple described in the book of Ezekiel. To prove this he devoted himself to years of serious study of the Hebrew language, the prophecy inchapters 40–43 of Ezekiel, and the construction of The Mother Church Extension. In 1907 he requestedpermission from the Christian Science Board of Directors (CSBD) to measure and photograph The MotherChurch. The request was denied.
After three years of further study, Hare presented his ideas to Mary Baker Eddy’s secretary, Adam H.Dickey. At this time Hare was hired as a landscape architect for Eddy’s residence at Chestnut Hill,Massachusetts, work he oversaw during 13 days in the fall of 1910. While at Chestnut Hill, he shared histheories on The Mother Church and Ezekiel’s Temple with members of Eddy’s household staff. Beforereturning to Missouri, he learned that Eddy had written to the Directors, requesting that they grant himpermission to measure and photograph The Mother Church. Following through on this, he took copiousnotes on what he felt constituted corroborating evidence that the edifice constituted the fulfillment ofEzekiel’s prophecy. In the end, though, he never produced his intended book on the subject.
Hare continued his professional work and academic research into biblical prophecy until the time of hisdeath.

The Sid J. Hare Collection contains correspondence, research materials, maps and plans, and books fromHare’s library. The collection comprises three series. Series I, Correspondence and Research Materials, and Series II, Maps and Plans, are both arranged in chronological order. Series III, Books, is arranged inalphabetical order by author. The collection is described at the item level.
Series I, Correspondence and Research Materials (1900–1919, n.d.), primarily consists of one envelopeaddressed to Hare, 13 letters (largely between Hare and officials representing the Christian Science Boardof Directors), and notes by Hare regarding biblical prophecy and The Mother Church Extension. Thecorrespondence includes a form letter by William B. Johnson welcoming Hare as a member of The FirstChurch of Christ, Scientist, a 1907 letter from Hare to Johnson requesting permission to measure andphotograph The Mother Church, and a reply from Johnson on behalf of the CSBD denying this request.Additional research material includes a photographic print of a drawing of The Mother Church Extensionand its plot, with a caption mentioning Hare, and a pamphlet, The Latter Days; With Evidence from theGreat Pyramid by F.E.H., with notes and indexing by Hare.
The majority of the correspondence is between Hare and Adam H. Dickey, and is related to Hare’stheories on biblical prophecy and The Mother Church Extension, as well as questions by Hare andanswers from Dickey regarding dates in Christian Science history. There is also a letter from Charles E.Jarvis, dated September 24, 1919, thanking Hare on behalf of the CSBD for having sent blueline prints ofthe Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. Notes include approximately 11 pages and various index cardswith Hare’s theories on the connection of The Mother Church Extension to the prophecy of Ezekiel’sTemple, including measurements of both.
Series II, Maps and Plans (1844, 1881, n.d.), includes both hand-drawn maps by Hare and printed mapsmade by others. Hare’s maps depict The Mother Church and the area surrounding it and include noteswith citations for the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, some using Hare’s own index system. Anundated color map is included, depicting the Back Bay, Fenway, and Roxbury neighborhoods, as well asan 1844 “Plan of the City of Boston,” printed by Samuel N. Dickinson. Six maps by Fuller and Whitneydepict changes in the Back Bay between 1814 and 1881.
Series III, Books (1713, 1820–1924, n.d.), contains 86 books from Hare’s library, published between 1713and 1924, the majority dating to the second half of the nineteenth century. The books are in English andinclude translations of materials originally in other languages. The majority of the books are on prophecy(particularly biblical prophecy), as well as ancient Egypt and the pyramids. Many include inscriptions andnotations by Hare, often using his index system. One such indexed book, a copy of Science and Healthwith Key to the Scriptures, includes a guide to the index system Hare developed. Books are cataloguedunder the Research & Reference Collection Directory. They have the location “HARE.”
