The Mary Baker Eddy Book Collection is subject to applicable copyright laws.

The Mary Baker Eddy Book Collection consists of books from Eddy’s Chestnut Hill home (400 Beacon). The bulk of the books were transferred from Mary Baker Eddy's study after her passing in 1910. TheCollection consists of Bibles and other titles by authors Eddy was known to have liked or referenced, books by contemporaries, and books by Eddy. The collection was created after 1910 when selectedbooks from Eddy’s study at Chestnut Hill were first transferred to the Church Archive.

The collection continued to be added to through 2006 as notations and handwriting were found in theremaining books at Chestnut Hill. If research of a book from Chestnut Hill revealed the book was once inEddy's room, such as on the desk or bedside table, or if the notations were credited to Eddy, the book wastransferred to the Mary Baker Eddy Book Collection. These books were transferred from the first floorlibrary, music room, and back parlor; and the second floor study, sitting room (pink room), west room, anddressing room. Books in all of the rooms in the home were documented in the 1917 and 1951 ChestnutHill inventory.

Not all of the books in this collection contain notes or markings in Eddy’s or her secretaries’ hand as theymay have been second hand. Also, it is not known if Eddy read all of the books in this collection.Additionally, these books do not represent all of the books Eddy may have read or acquired throughout herlifetime. Some of the books in the collection, although few, did not come to the collection from theChestnut Hill home. These books were acquired by the Archives prior to the opening of the Library in 2002and were added to this collection because of notations identified as written by Eddy (or her secretaries). Atone time, this included books from the Calvin A. Frye Library, acquired in 1947, but these books werereturned to the Calvin A. Frye Library Book Collection.

This collection does not consist of all of the books or published writings by Mary Baker Eddy. Otherpublished and printed materials such as pamphlets and articles are not in this collection; rather, they are inthe Magazine and Pamphlet Collection and Eddy/Frye Scrapbooks.

The Chestnut Hill Book Collection consists of books that Mary Baker Eddy mayhave read, referenced, or were present in her residences.Mary Baker Eddy Autographed and Inscribed Books consists of booksinscribed by Mary Baker Eddy but were not transferred from Chestnut Hill.Mary Baker Eddy Pamphlet and Serial Publications consists of printed andpublished materials written by and with notations by Mary Baker Eddy and weretransferred from her last residence at Chestnut Hill.
