THE SECTIONS

NB: SECTIONS MARKED *** ARE RECOMMENDED FOR SPECTATORS. GRID REFS AND TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE.

Clough House *** (Section 1) : OS Grid Ref SJ 989 697 First Man Due 9.10Classic, boulder-strewn river bed and maybe up the banks a bit – usually a soft one to get you started, just below the ford

and footbridge. It's an easy if stony walk up from the nearby car-park so handy if you're short of time or maybe not so

steady. Apparently we have photos here showing sections from the 1930s.

Plantation *** (Sections 2 - 4) : OS Grid Ref SJ 990 698 First Man Due 9.15All off the track on the right as you go up either in or on the other side of the stream. First one is usually a good un. If

spectating be careful - we had the air rescue helicopter out last year for Edd Hibbert as he nose-dived 20 feet down into

the stream! It's about .6 of a mile/1 kilometre from the road uphill to Ben's Ditch and Cumberland Rivers.

Ben's Ditch *** (Sections 5 - 6) : OS Grid Ref SJ 996 698 First Man Due 9.35

A couple of bedrock and big boulder streams in a hollow below the waterfall, one with a step for the Experts. Very tightand not used often so likely to be very, very slippery. Marksnatchers if you're not careful.

Attention To avoid a long road stretch and a couple of awkward junctions, the route to Scaurs now goes acrosscountry. After leaving Ben's Ditch, make sure you follow the correct marking at the corner (up the left hand gully to theCumberland group) and don't turn right to Cumberland Rivers or you'll miss a stack of sections. Check the route map.

WATCH OUT FOR TWO-WAY TRIAL TRAFFIC.

Cumberland *** (Sections 7 - 8) : OS Grid Ref SJ 998 700 First Man Due 9.50Classic gritstone stream group. Outstanding for spectators who can take their pick from any of the sections between here

and Clough House. See Shutlingsloe, that big hill over the valley? I'm told that the winners of the local fell race were

going up AND down again in 15 minutes! And that's without an engine!

PLEASE STICK CLOSELY TO THE MARKED ROUTE AND DO NOT RIDE ON THE MOORLAND.

1. GROUND NESTING BIRDS AND SENSITIVE MOORLAND. 2. OLD MINE SHAFTS.

Ride over the first and you might get shot. Ride over the second and you might not need it! No-one knows where

they all were, not all were sealed as you might hope and every now and then a shaft opens up!

Ben’s Scaurs *** (Sections 9 - 12) : OS Grid Ref SJ 997 718 First Man Due 10.05Stream in a deep cleft with big grippy rocks, just across the moor from the Cat & Fiddle pub. Cracking sections but they

can be hard work for the club lads so we get it in early to make sure we don't kill them off too soon. Takes a few marks off

the top lads, too.

Whether on two feet or two wheels, CAUTION on the steep descent in, which has claimed many over the years. May be

best to walk the bike down if its wet. We are not kidding!!!!!!!

Norman’s (Section 13 - 14) : OS Grid Ref SJ 997 718 First Man Due 10.30Two subs here this time, making it worth the walk, especially as the first one was new last year. Bedrock slot stream but

with a step and a lot of moss and green slimy stuff.

Cumberland Rivers *** (Sections 15 - 16) : OS Grid Ref SJ 998 699 First Man Due 10.45Nice natural stream in a hillside slot with bedrock steps and loose boulders. Excellent for spectators to park up and watch

a few through. AGAIN, wATCH OUT FOR TWO-WAY TRAFFIC.

Holt Gully *** (Section 17) : OS Grid Ref SK 007 696 First Man Due 11.05Good parking in the lay-by at the top. A long gritstone & rubble slot straight up the hillside with some awkward steps and

often a few twists thrown in. Could be one that separates the top guys. See the note above re Ground Nesting Birds and

old mine shafts – applies here too!

Cut-Thorn (Section 18 - 20) : OS Grid Ref SK 007 689 First man Due 11.20Stream in a deep gully. Often accessed from under the small bridge over the stream just after the stock gate on the track

to Three Shire Heads.

Hawk’s Nest *** (Sections 21 - 23) : OS Grid Ref SK 014 673 First Man Due 11.45Classic and a nice spot for just mooching around if it’s sunny. Loose grit and assorted gritstone blocks and grit bedrock

on a gritty hillside with open views across the gritstone Peak landscape. Ample parking but access is down a narrow road

and it's the only way in and out by car so care both ways, please. Take some heavy duty bug-spray!

Robinson's Rocks *** (Sections 24 - 26) : OS Grid Ref SK 014 670 First Man Due 12.05Rocky stream and probably some muddy banks in the valley below Hawks Nest. If you survived the bugs at Hawks, then

the ones here will probably get you.

Page 5: THE MANCHESTER “17” MOTORCYCLE CLUB LTD. Programm… · the manchester “17” motorcycle club ltd. founded in 1935 and affiliated to cheshire & north wales centre, auto cycle

Barber's (Section 27) : OS Grid Ref SK 011 670 First Man Due 12.20Usually a narrow steep climb out of the river between trees on bedrock and roots. Could be worth a stroll down if you've

seen everywhere else before. Probably better to go from the Hawks end as they're ain't much parking space on the back

road from Flash.

Manor Rocks *** (Sections 28 - 31) : OS Grid Ref SJ 995 664 First Man Due 12.35Flat, broad stream at the bottom narrowing to a steep gully with big moss-covered rocks and a few strategically placed

gorse bushes at the top, so plenty of scope for all sorts of fun.

The route now takes riders back to the Start area. On leaving Manor Rocks via the top gate, turn right then immediately

left onto the gated road. Follow this (with caution – it's narrow) back to the A54 and then left to the Start. Once you're

done at the Start, leave again the same way as this morning. Follow the road downhill but TURN LEFT AT THE GREEN

TRIANGLE and then left again onto the Wildboarclough valley road at the bottom. CAUTION: 2 WAY TRIAL TRAFFIC -

In addition to other road users you may meet competitors coming the other way on this stretch of road.

Heath's/Hazel's (Section 32) : OS Grid Ref SJ 964 680 First Man Due 13.20Probably a narrow climb up loose small flat rocks, with excursions around trees to make it interesting.

Milkingsteads (Sections 33 - 35) : OS Grid Ref SJ 938 684 First Man Due 13.40These next two groups are all in long slots up the side of Croker Hill/Sutton Common, below the big mast: expect bedrock

streams, slabs/steps and trees.

Captain's Crack (Sections 36 - 38) : OS Grid Ref SJ 935 686 First Man Due 14.00Steep sides and steep up with angled bedrock slabs, possibly not that slippery but could be tight and another opportunity

for us to snatch a few dabs from the leaders.

IMPORTANT - PARKING FOR MILKINGSTEADS & CAPTAIN'S CRACKObservers for these sections will be parking at the farms, but space is limited. To avoid inconveniencing the

farmers and residents, spectators and supporters are requested not to do this. Instead, park up by the telecoms

mast and walk down.

CAUTION: Remember that there will be 2 way trial traffic (and other users) along parts of the narrow Wildboarcloughvalley road. Go slow & careful and watch out on the corners and junctions.

Hilda's Gully (Section 39 – 40) : OS Grid Ref SJ 972 680 First Man Due 14.20Bedrock gully with a nasty turn on angled slabs avoided by the easy route followed by one-size-fits-all long final section

up a narrow straightish bedrock and loose rock gully. Small car park right by the gate!

SIGN OFF: After completing the sections at Hilda's Gully then left out of the bottom gate and make your way back along

the valley before turning right, past the field we use for the Northern Experts and then veer right at the green triangle by

Crag Hall and back in again where you came out this morning.
