Traditional Costumes
• The Malays Traditional costume is called the Baju Kurung.
• There are many variation to this baju kurung.

• The Malay marriage is a regal affair. The bride and groom are treated as king and queen for a day.

• EngagementAs soon as a man announces his wish to marry, an engagement date will be set when families of the couple meet to discuss the wedding plans.

Nikah Ceremony• The berinai (henna application) ceremony is held
prior to the wedding. The bride's palms and feet are 'decorated' with the dye from the henna leaves.
• Religious solemnisation of the marriage takes place on the wedding eve. Known as the Nikah ceremony rite is required by both the Islamic law and the civic law to legalise a Malay wedding.

Bersanding • Guests are invited to partake of a meal on
Sunday. This is usually held in the void deck of a housing board flat so as to accommodate the large number of guests invited.

Bersanding • Besides cutting down on costs, holding the
feast in the void deck also enables the guests to view the bridal chamber and the bersanding (sitting in state) ceremony often held in the pengantin's (bride/groom) home.
• in Singapore, such tasks be undertaken by caterers.

• Bersanding • Guests are presented with a bunga telur each.
Literally, this means 'flower and egg'. Previously, the gifts were eggs dyed red placed in a cup or container with some glutinous rice at the base. Sometimes a paper flower is added to decorate the gift. The egg symbolises a fertile union and the hope that the marriage will produce many children.

• The Malays in Singapore are dominantly Muslims.
• They have two main celebrations– Hari Raya Puasa– Hari Raya Haji
Hari Raya Puasa
• A month before Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims all over the world are required to fast from early morning to evening.
• Apart from not eating, they also abstain from seeing, doing and saying anything that is bad and that can affect their fast.
Hari Raya Puasa
• On the morning of Hari Raya Puasa, the Muslims will start the day with seeking forgiveness from family members.
• They will also pay a visit to their relatives.

• There are many Hari Raya goodies, like the ones the Chinese have during Chinese New Year.
• We have tarts, kueh makmur (in the shape of a leaf) and many other cookies.
Hari Raya Haji
• Hari Raya Haji is celebrated by the practicing Muslims to mark the end of their annual holy pilgrimage to Mecca.
Observances during Hari Raya Haji
• On this holy day Muslim congregate in the mosques to offer their prayers to the Lord and sermons are also read out there.
• They sacrifice sheep, goats and donate the meats to the poor people.

• It's the day when the Muslim community's ethics and practices are perfectly observed.
• People pay visit to their parents, families and friends.
