e are now ready to study the second halfof the Old Testament. In this Lesson, we

will study the books of three prophets, called theMajor Prophets.

But before we go into those books, we needto ask: What is prophecy? Prophecy is revealingfuture events before they happen. For example,God’s Word states that nations would descendfrom Abraham and that they would be mightyand have tremendous blessings. That was aprophecy. Thousands of years later, this becametrue of America, Britain and the other Israelitenations. While this prophecy has been fulfilled, most prophecies in the Bible have not been ful-filled yet.

How much prophecy is in the Bible? Whentaken as a whole, one-third of the Bible is direct-ly related to prophecy. Yet, as much as 90 per-cent of those prophecies are still to occur in thefuture.

Prophecy is very popular today. Some of themost popular items downloaded from our web-sites are prophecy related. This topic gets peo-ple’s attention because it reveals things that willsoon come upon mankind.

However, the world is very confused aboutprophecy. There are hundreds—eventhousands—of counterfeit ideas and teachings.

Some of the most popular books at your localbookstore are related to a skewed, bungled formof prophecy. Even some splinters that camefrom the Worldwide Church of God are nowproclaiming wrong, confused understandings ofprophecy.

God’s Word explains what will soon comeupon mankind. As a young person, this subjectshould be of interest to you. However, youmust be careful not to delve into the world’sexplanations of these prophecies. The Biblewarns of many false prophets bringing manyfalse prophecies. This warning rings truetoday!

God’s Church provides the only true sourceof understanding on the subject of future events.Isn’t it exciting that you have access to the rightunderstanding of what will happen to thisworld? While we cannot learn every detail offuture events, we are able to peer into the futureand see what is soon to come.

Three Prophets

Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel were sent by Godto deliver a message to the nations of Israel andJudah. These messages were largely messagesof coming punishment upon those nations.

Isaiah prophesied for 40 years, from about740 to 700 B.C. This was during the reigns ofJudah’s kings, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz andHezekiah. His message was concerning Judahand Jerusalem.

Jeremiah also prophesied to the nation ofJudah. He prophesied during the reigns ofJosiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin andZedekiah, from approximately 626 to 582 B.C.This was during the period right before thenation of Judah was taken into captivity.

Jeremiah continued to warn and prophesyafter the captivity. Later, he accompanied a royalentourage to Ireland, where he became well-known and highly honored.

Finally, the prophet Ezekiel was sent to thenation of Israel, and prophesied from 592 to 572B.C. By this time, Israel had already been takencaptive as well. Ezekiel was a prisoner inBabylon at the time.

A Lesson for Youth

Before proceeding, an important side noteshould be mentioned. Turn in your Bible toJeremiah 1:5 and fill in the blanks (remember,we use the New King James Version in theselessons). Here, God is talking to Jeremiah:

“‘Before I formed you in the womb I knewyou; Before you were born ___________________________________________; I ordainedyou a prophet to the nations.’ Then said I: ‘Ah,Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak, for__________________’ But the LORD said to me:‘Do not say, “I am ________,” For you shall goto all to whom I send you, and whatever I com-mand you, you shall speak. ________________________of their faces, for _______________________________________,’ says the LORD.”

Take note. Jeremiah was a young man, butGod chose him for a very special and importantpurpose. You must realize that, with the help ofGod, you too can do much. There may be a timein your life when you realize that God wants youto help in a specific way. You will have to relyon Him to help you fulfill any task He asks ofyou.

Also, as a youth in God’s Church, you aresanctified—set apart. Notice I Corinthians 7:14:“For the unbelieving husband is sanctified bythe wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctifiedby the husband; otherwise your children wouldbe unclean, but now they are holy.” This meansthat, as you grow up in God’s Church, you willbe given unique and special opportunities. Besure to take advantage of them!

A Message for Today

Let’s continue studying these three large booksof the Bible—Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel.

If these prophets were sent to the nations ofJudah and Israel, some may ask: “How do weknow that this is written for our time? How dowe know that these books detail events that aresoon to come?” An answer lies in when theseprophesies were given.

Recall that it was mentioned that Ezekielwas already a prisoner when he prophesied tothe nation of Israel. His book, Ezekiel, explainsa coming captivity. However, the kingdom ofIsrael was already taken into captivity! It wouldnot make any sense to warn the nation when ithad already happened. Also, Ezekiel could notactually take the message to Israel, as he wasimprisoned in Babylon.

Ezekiel’s message was primarily for themodern-day house of Israel. Knowing the iden-

tity of the nations that descended from Israel isthe key to understanding these prophesies.

The Key to Understanding

You are most likely aware of the modern coun-try called “Israel.” It is in the Middle East, andoften arises in the news in regard to a territorialconflict with the Palestinians. The people thatmake up today’s country of Israel are Jewish. These people descended from the tribe of Judah.Descendants of the tribes of Benjamin and Leviare also found in the modern nation of Israel.

But where are the other tribes of ancientIsrael? The world calls them the lost ten tribes ofIsrael. They are lost to the world; however, it hasbeen revealed to God’s Church where thosetribes are located, and their identity provides theanswer as toward whom the message of theMajor Prophets is directed.

The vital key to the identity of the ten tribeswas revealed to Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong. Bynow, if you have grown up in the Church, youhave probably heard quite a bit about this man.As Christ’s apostle, he was sent to lead theChurch during a large portion of the last centu-ry. During that time, God revealed the identityof ancient Israel through Mr. Armstrong in thebook The United States and Britain inProphecy. After Mr. Armstrong died, a group ofmen changed the teachings of the Church;God’s people left, and the book was no longeravailable.

Since that time, God has raised up anotherleader to lead His Church. Mr. David C. Packhas rewritten all of Mr. Armstrong’s literature tomake it available again to any God is calling.Mr. Pack’s book AMERICA AND BRITAIN IN BIBLE

PROPHECY explains the same Bible truths of the

identity of the tribes ofIsrael. You may wish toread that book soon.

In summary, the book explains that theUnited States, the United Kingdom, Canada,Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and manyother European nations constitute the “house ofIsrael” in Bible prophecies. Some brief historywill help here. You will recall that the nation ofIsrael split in two. The southern nation becamethe house of Judah. These people became theJews, and they are the only tribe of Israel thatkept their identity.

The northern nation, consisting of ten tribes, was called Israel. However, they lost their iden-tity, which is why the world considers them the“ten lost tribes.” They lost their identitybecause of Sabbath-breaking and idolatry. Afterbeing warned, the nation of Israel was takeninto captivity by the Assyrians. The above-mentioned book explains that these peopleeventually migrated to Western Europe andNorth America.

Two Great Sins

Let’s briefly review why Israel was taken intocaptivity, and why they lost their identity. Recallthat God made an agreement (called a covenant)with Israel.

Notice Exodus 31: “Speak also to the chil-dren of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths youshall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you

3 CHILDREN’S BIBLE LESSON

throughout your generations, that you mayknow that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.‘You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it isholy to you. Everyone who profanes it shallsurely be put to death; for whoever does anywork on it, that person shall be cut off fromamong his people. ‘Therefore the children ofIsrael shall keep the Sabbath, to observe theSabbath throughout their generations as a per-petual covenant. ‘It is a signbetween Me and the children ofIsrael forever; for in six daysthe LORD made the heavens andthe earth, and on the seventhday He rested and wasrefreshed’” (vs. 13-14, 16-17).

Also notice Leviticus 26, achapter that explains the bless-ings for obedience and thecurses for disobedience. It out-lines two major areas that mustbe paid special attention—Sabbath-keeping and idolatry: “You shall not__________ for __________; neither a ______ nor a sacred pillar shall you _______ for__________; nor shall you set up an ____________ in your land, to _________ to it; for___________________________. You shallkeep My _________ and __________ My_______: I am the LORD. If you ________ in My_______ and ________ My _______________,and perform them...” (vs. 1-3).

Both the above passages underscore theimportance of the keeping the Sabbath. It is asign that points to the God of creation—the onetrue God! Those who keep the Sabbath are keptin the true knowledge of God and His truths. Ifpeople do not keep the Sabbath, they will notbe able to worship the true God and eventually

will lose all truth, including their identity. Thatis what happened to the tribes of ancient Israel.

Turn to Ezekiel 20:12 and fill in the blanks:“Moreover I also _____ them _____________,to be a ____ between them and Me, that theymight _____ that _______the LORD who sancti-fies them. Yet the house of Israel __________against Me in the wilderness; they did not walkin _________; they despised My____________,

‘which, if a man does, he shalllive by them’; and they greatly__________________. Then Isaid I would pour out My fury onthem in the wilderness, to con-sume them. But I said to theirchildren in the wilderness, ‘Donot walk in the statutes of yourfathers, nor observe ________________, nor defile yourselveswith ___________. I am theLORD your God: Walk in ___________________________, keep

________________, and do them; ‘hallow________________, and they will be a signbetween Me and you, that you may know that Iam the LORD your God.’ Notwithstanding, thechildren rebelled against Me; they did not walkin My statutes, and were not careful to observeMy judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shalllive by them’; but they ___________________________________. Then I said I would pourout My fury on them and fulfill My angeragainst them in the wilderness” (vs. 12-13, 18-21).

In the end, Israel lost their identity and thetrue God. He scattered them for their disobedi-ence. However, the message to them in theMajor Prophets still applies, and it will come topass in the coming years.

Bad News—Then Great News

Many take note of some of the horrible thingsthat are soon to come. They wonder why Godwould allow such events. The simplest answer isthat these events are part of a greater plan ofGod—a plan that ends with tremendous andwonderful abundance.

Mankind must truly understand that its wayonly ends in war, starvation, unhappiness andmany other bad effects. The horribly tragicevents that will smash into this world are for thepurpose of teaching mankind a lesson.

But, again, there is MUCH good just beyondthe bad. The Major Prophets talk about someserious times ahead. But these books also dis-cuss that beyond those horrific events is a timewhen Jesus Christ will reign for 1,000 years.Peace, prosperity, abundance and happiness willbe the norm throughout the earth. Beyond those1,000 years, the God family (consisting of Godthe Father, Jesus Christ and all human beingswho qualify) will go on to do wonderful thingsin the entire universe for all eternity.

We can only touch on certain high points inthese books. There is much in what amounts to166 chapters. As you grow older, you will wantto revisit these books and do a Bible Study oneach.

Christ’s Sacrifice Prophesied

As mentioned, the prophecies in the books ofIsaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are primarily forthe time just ahead of us. However, there is onevery large prophecy that has already beenfulfilled—Jesus Christ’s First Coming. We mustcover this since it is so fundamental to the planfor mankind.

Notice Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the LordHimself will give you a _____: Behold, the_____ shall __________ and ____________,and shall call __________________________.”Immanuel means “God is with us.” This is aprophecy of Christ’s First Coming. Remember,Isaiah prophesied 700 years before Christ came.As we know, that prophecy came true!

But Isaiah had more to say of the coming ofJesus Christ, the Son of God: “There shall comeforth a Rod from the stem of _________, and a______ shall grow out of his roots. The__________ ____________shall rest upon Him,the _____-_____and _________, the Spirit of_________ and ________, the Spirit of _______and of the ____ of the LORD” (11: 1-2). This isalso a prophecy of the coming of Jesus Christ. The stem of Jesse simply means that Christwould descend from the house of Jesse (orDavid, Jesse’s son).

The coming of Jesus Christ was all-important to God’s Plan for mankind. Before weexplain why, let’s see other aspects of Christ’slife prophesied in the book of Isaiah. The fol-lowing scriptures explain what Christ wentthrough at the end of His life.

Isaiah 52:14: “Just as many were astonishedat you, So His ______ was _______________________, And His form more than the sons ofmen.”

Page 7: The Major Prophets - The Restored Church of God · PDF filewill study the books of three prophets, called the Major Prophets. ... Some of the most popular books at your local ... The

Isaiah 53:3: “He is ________________ and______________, a Man of ________ andacquainted with _____. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was ________, and_____________________________________.”

Isaiah 53:5: “But He was _________________________________________________, Hewas ______________________________; The____________ for our peace was upon Him,And by _______________________________.

Take note of the last scripture, and answerthe following question: Why was Jesus Christwounded? Answer:_____________________________________________________________.

We will later see all that God plans to bringmankind in the Millennium. All the “goodnews” could not happen if Christ did not firstcome and die for mankind’s sin. Humanityneeds a Savior.

Why? Because death is the ultimate penal-ty of all sin. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages ofsin is death.” Romans 3:23 explains that allhave sinned. Every human being on earth hassinned. Sin cuts a person off from God. JesusChrist came 2,000 years ago to pay the penal-ty for all mankind. Only then could humanbeings inherit eternal life. Without JesusChrist’s sacrifice for us, we would earn thedeath penalty.

Take note of the description of Jesus Christ’sdeath in Isaiah. Imagine the immense pain andsuffering He went through so mankind couldreceive so much! He was beaten up more thanany other man! He was wounded, bruised, chas-tised and whipped for each and every one of us.

Also note that it is by His stripes (the physi-cal beatings He received) that we are healed.Only in God’s Church today are there real, gen-uine healings. When we are sick, we are to cometo the elders of the Church, and they will ask for

our healing through anointing. If an elder is notnearby, he will send you an anointed cloth. Ofcourse, we must believe (have faith) that Godcan heal us. Also, as we have now learned, wewould not be able to be healed if it weren’t forChrist’s sacrifice.

A Picture of Today

Now let’s look deep into the three books that weare studying. All three prophets describe theworld today. In effect, they prophesied all thebad things in society that we see around us. Thepicture is bleak and quite ugly.

You must strive to be different than theworld around you. Church services, these les-sons, magazines and other literature, your par-ents and siblings are all things to help you growinto a godly person. You will face pressure fromfriends at school. You will see some of thethings that the prophets described. You mayeven be tempted to leave the Church and moveon to other things. However, the world, andwhat it has to offer, is simply not worth it.

Let’s study some passages:Ezekiel 7:10-11; 23: “Behold, the day!

Behold, it has come! Doom has gone out; Therod has blossomed, pride has budded. ____________________ into a rod of wickedness…Forthe _________________________________________, and the ________________________.”This accurately describes the world today.Violence is everywhere. Almost every televisionshow or movie contains hundreds of violentacts. Video games teach youth to be violent.Gangs are in every city, and are moving intosuburbs and towns. Truly, the cities are “full ofviolence” and “filled with crimes.”

Ezekiel 9:9: “Then He said to me, ‘The iniq-uity of the house of Israel and Judah is

__________________________, and the land is_________________________, and the city________________; for they say, “The LORD hasforsaken the land, and the LORD does not see!”’”

In society, there is every form of perversity.Clothing styles and music are growing moreodd, weird and twisted. Teens also make it theirgoal to look promiscuous. Foul language isbecoming the norm. Sin of every flavor, stripeand color is now accepted, and anyone who sayssin is wrong is considered intolerant.

Ezekiel 2:3-4, 7: “I am sending you to thechildren of Israel, to a ____________________that has _____________________; they andtheir fathers have _______________________to this very day. For they are _________ and_________ children...You shall speak My wordsto them, whether they hear or whether ________________________, for _________________________________.”

Ezekiel 20:7-8: “‘Each of you, throw awaythe abominations which are before his eyes, anddo not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt.I am the LORD your God.’ But they________________________and would notobey Me. They did not all cast away the abomi-nations which were before their eyes, nor didthey forsake the idols of Egypt...”

The nation of Israel was stubborn—theyalways wanted to do things their own way. Thesame is true today. All people, but especially thedescendants of Israel, are rebellious. Theyignore what God has to say; instead, they dowhat they think is right.

As young people, always be careful of thetendency to be stubborn and rebellious. You mayfind yourself not wanting to do what your par-ents tell you. But they know what is in your bestinterest, so be sure never to allow yourself to

become like those described in the passagesabove.

Idolatry—Then and Now

Remember that the tribes of Israel lost theiridentity because of two laws that they broke. These were keeping the Sabbath and not wor-shipping idols. If you keep these two laws, youstay in contact with the true God. If you breakthese commandments, you eventually pull awayfrom God and all His teachings.

We have looked at the Sabbath, but let’snow discuss idolatry. Notice Ezekiel 14:4-5:“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Everyone of thehouse of Israel who _____________________in ____________, and puts before him whatcauses him to ______into _________, and thencomes to the prophet, I the LORD will answerhim who comes, according to the multitude ofhis idols, that I may seize the house of Israel bytheir heart, because they are all estranged fromMe by their idols.’”

The nation of Israel turned away from Godand worshiped idols. In their case, these werefalse gods made of metal, stone and wood. Theyneeded something physical to worship ratherthan the one true God, who is spiritual.

How does this have application to youtoday? Generally, we are not in a society havingmany physical idols. While there are some, andwe must avoid them, there is a far bigger prob-lem, and it applies to every one of God’s youngpeople.

Idolatry can be defined as when something—anything—comes before God. Money is amodern-day example. People can focus on earn-ing money more than anything else in theirlives—including worshipping God. If this hap-

Page 9: The Major Prophets - The Restored Church of God · PDF filewill study the books of three prophets, called the Major Prophets. ... Some of the most popular books at your local ... The

pens, they make money their idol. Young peoplecan focus on their looks too much, and this canbecome an idol. The same is true with clothes, television shows, music, knowledge, etc. If any-thing in your life comes before God, it is an idol;you must either avoid it completely or learn itsproper place in your life.

Sighing and Crying

What should your reaction be to all the sins thatyou see around you? Ezekiel 9:4 reveals theanswer: “And the Lord said to him, “Go throughthe midst of the city, through the midst ofJerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads ofthe men who _____ and ____ over all the_____________ that are done within it.”

We are to “sigh” and “cry” for the things wesee around us. This means that it should hit ushard and affect us emotionally. Every time yousee something horrible, you should remindyourself that God’s kingdom is coming soon—that there is good news ahead. It should causeyou to truly want that day to come as soon aspossible. It should also cause you to pray to Godand ask Him that His kingdom come quickly.

A Warning Necessary

Because of the rebellion and lawlessness thatGod’s people (Israel) have committed, they willbe punished. This is not because God no longerlikes them. In fact, this will happen because Heloves them, and understands that they must learntheir lesson. Sometimes, human beings have tolearn the hard way. This can mean pain or sad-ness, but in the end, the lesson is learned.

Before God corrects His children, He alwayswarns them. He gives them a chance to turn

around and obey Him. God’s Church generally, and Mr. Pack specifically, is fulfilling God’spurpose to warn the nations of what lies ahead ifthey do not repent.

Notice Ezekiel 3:17-19: “Son of man, I havemade you a ___________ for the ________ of_____________; therefore hear a word from Mymouth, and give them _________________:When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’and you give him no warning, nor speak to_______________________________________________, to save his life, that same wickedman shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I willrequire at your hand. Yet, if you warn thewicked, and he does not turn from his wicked-ness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die inhis iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.”(You will find a similar explanation of God’swarning and His Watchman in Ezekiel 33.)

God requires His Church and His leader toissue a warning. This is done today through var-ious means—magazines, books, booklets, arti-cles, broadcasts, etc.

Coming Punishment

Having seen the prophets describe the awful pic-ture of today, and understanding that the peoplewill be warned, we must now look at what liesahead for this rebellious people. The picture isnot good. But remember, there is only a littlebad news before a great deal of good news.

Jeremiah 30:7 states, “Alas! For that day isgreat, _____________________; and it is thetime of __________________, but he shall besaved out of it.”

The correction that is coming for the nationsof Israel will be very strong. There will be noneother like it. But even the above scriptures

describe that Jacob (the house of Israel) will besaved from it in the end.

Ezekiel 5 describes what will happen tothese nations. Turn to Ezekiel 5:12: “_________of you shall ____ of the ___________, and be__________ with _______ in your midst; and___________ shall fall by the ________ allaround you; and I will ____________________to all the winds, and I will draw out a swordafter them.” The final third described here willbe taken into captivity by other nations.

As you can see, this time of coming punish-ment will not be pleasant for the house of Israel. However, you need not fear this time—you canbe protected. The same chapter, verse 3, states,“You shall also take a ____________________________and bind them in the edge of your gar-ment.” A tiny few, those in God’s Church, willbe protected from this time of punishment. Youwill be protected as long as you continue to obeyGod and live His way of life. (Also read Isaiah26:20.)

Notice Ezekiel 6:6: “In all your dwellingplaces the _____________________________,and the high places shall be desolate, so thatyour altars may be laid waste and made deso-late, your idols may be broken and made tocease, your incense altars may be cut down, andyour works may be abolished.”

What does it mean that cities will be laidwaste? Ten years ago, it would be hard to under-stand. But today, we can recall what happened toNew Orleans in the summer of 2005. A hurri-cane came and caused the city to flood. Monthslater, the city was still not restored to its originalstate. In effect, New Orleans was laid waste. Also, Hiroshima, a Japanese city, was utterlydestroyed with a nuclear bomb in World War II.Something similar will happen to hundreds and

thousands of cities in the coming GreatTribulation.

The World Tomorrow

In just a few short years, after the terrible timedescribed above, Christ will return, and God’skingdom will be established. Under Christ, res-urrected saints will rule with Him.

Let’s notice some scriptures:Ezekiel 36:25-31: “Then I will sprinkle clean

water on you, and you shall be _______; I will________ you from all your __________ andfrom all your idols. I will give you a ________and put a __________ within you; I will take theheart of stone out of your flesh and give you aheart of flesh. I will put __________ within youand cause you to walk in My statutes, and youwill _______________ and do them. Then youshall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers;you shall be My people, and I will be your God.I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. Iwill call for the grain and multiply it, and bring nofamine upon you. And I will multiply the fruit ofyour trees and the increase of your fields, so thatyou need never again bear the reproach of famineamong the nations. Then ___________________your ____________ and your ______ that were__________; and you will loathe yourselves inyour own sight, for your iniquities and yourabominations.”

Isaiah 2:2-4: “Now it shall come to pass inthe latter days that the mountain of the LORD’shouse shall be established on the top of themountains, and shall be exalted above the hills;and all nations shall flow to it. Many peopleshall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up tothe mountain of the LORD, to the house of theGod of Jacob; ___ will _____ us _________,

from Jerusalem. He shall judge between thenations, and rebuke manypeople; they shall _____ their_______ into ____________,and their ______ into_______________; nationshall not lift up sword againstnation, neither shall they learnwar anymore.”

Isaiah 11:4-9: “But withrighteousness He shall judgethe poor, and decide withequity for the meek of theearth; He shall strike the earthwith the rod of His mouth, andwith the breath of His lips Heshall slay the wicked._______________ shall bethe belt of His loins, and____________ the belt of Hiswaist. The nursing child shall play bythe cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall puthis hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurtnor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the_______ shall be _____ of the ___________ ofthe LORD as the waters __________ the _____.”

This is the good news! And it is in the nearfuture!

Your parents, (if they are in God’s trueChurch), and maybe even you, if there is timeleft for you to be baptized, will be among those

saints ruling with Christ in that wonderfulworld to come. (Of course, if there is not timefor you to be baptized, you will be a top human

leader in the Millennium. Still, a superbopportunity!)

God’s government will bring aboutimmense peace, abundance and joy. Peoplewill be filled with hope, assurance and inspira-tion. All nations will be given the opportunityto know the true God. It will truly be theWonderful World Tomorrow!
