PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A message from the President of AGTTA to its membership and all those that help keep the hobby of model railroading alive.

“MEMORIES”

For most of us, electric trains elicit memories of our

youth when we regarded them as toys, something to be used for motorized mayhem such as smoke-puffing battering rams: pity the unfortunate Tiny Tears doll lashed to the rails as you re-lived the vile energies of Simon Legree; or “weapons of crass destruction'' when your brother left unattended his favorite Revell P-51 that was re-configured as wingless shrapnel as a flat car load. HOW-TO CLINIC No Clinic This Month

Our How-To Clinic Leader, Jim Weatherford, has decided it is best to skip having a How-To this month and let everyone have time to check out and get familiar with our new digs. It will also give Jim a chance to work out the logistics and determine what area of the Hall would work best in which to hold future Clinics.

As always, if you have an idea or two for future Clinics Jim would love to hear from you. Just sent him an e-mail or give him a call. And better still if you would like to conduct a Clinic yourself that would be outstanding! We have a lot of accumulated knowledge in the Club, so let’s share it. Just talk to Jim and let him know what you have in mind. And as always, thanks!

assumed that 3 perfectly spaced rails were the perfect complement to his feline backside. These events occurred because electric trains were there for our enjoyment and youthful imagination can be difficult to control.

And then we fast-forward 50-60 years (it really was fast, was it not!?) until we suddenly realize that we still have that flavor of our youth stuck in our craw, though perhaps and hopefully with a more civilized attitude towards the possessions and well-being of others. We have replaced unknowing victims with nobler objectives such as layout construction, weathering finesse, train maintenance clinics for the new-comers and free train set raffles for the young folks. Trains are still significant in our lives and, more importantly, we are trying to make them enjoyable in the lives of others.

I think this is the nature of the evolution of the AGTTA. We started as a small group of collectors and hoarders whose un-written motto may as well have been ''whoever can fill up every possible space in their closets, garages, spare bedrooms, derelict auto parked in the yonder with boxes and boxes of invisible trains probably is living a limited life'' (as mottos go this one is much like the hobby - far-reaching and space consuming). We should be finally trying to function beyond the accumulation of cab numbers, variations, sets and such in order to pass on to others the inherent joy of playing with trains. We are no longer a group of collectors and hoarders for we have progressed to a knowledgeable group of operators, constructors, educators and givers. We can create fun for others just by ''letting go'' of the ghost trains in our collections, those items that we thought we saw decades ago but cannot be seen through the 1976 sports sections in which so many of them still remain wrapped.

I think that we can experience the same level of enjoyment as when we were younger by focusing on more integration with the greater disciplines of model railroading and electric train operations. We have seen how ''civilians'' react when they are presented with an operating railroad that is NOT in a model railroad environment. The Rady Hospital display is a great example of a well-attended attraction that relies on its own merits with no related influences. Another example is the layout that is set-up every Christmas time by Bob Shultz in a bank in Cardiff. He gives away a complete set every year and the response to both the layout and set are wonderful. Our most recent experience was at Kobey's Swap meet in December where Bart set up a multi-gauge layout

that drew consistent crowds for both days that he was there. None of the above three venues would logically be associated with model railroading, but, as the saying goes, “if you built it they will come”, which attests to the inherent qualities of operating toy trains.

For those of us who are not so young anymore, it should be noted that we can remain youthful until the old boiler hisses its last wisp of life as long as we make the effort to educate those who are as young now as we once were. We are lucky to have found each other in this Club and we should pass along these great fortunes to others to enable the furtherance of this wonderful hobby.

Respectfully,

Jim Andrews - President AGTTA

CLUB NEWS

Great Train Expo at Del Mar – Great news! AGTTA has been accepted and we’ll be having our 5-Rail Layout Display and more at this year’s GTX show. It will be held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on the weekend of February 18/19. Should be another great event and another outstanding opportunity for our Club to meet the public. If you would like to be part of the fun and run some of your trains or just come up to help out, please contact Bob Wall or Jim Andrews. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Christmas In Poway Park – Brian Liesberg, representing The Motormen, had another wonderful and popular layout display at the very popular Christmas in Poway Park. He sent along some nice pictures and words about the event. Please see pages 13 & 14.

Kobey Meet – This turned out to be a successful outing thanks to everyone that participated, especially to Bart Grey who set up a great layout that had a crowd around it all day. We hope to do this again a couple of times this year. (Please see the Board Meeting Report on the next page for more information.)

CHRISTMAS DINNER GATHERING

Once again the Club’s social highlight of 2016 was our annual Christmas Dinner. It’s always a treat to close out the year with this coming together with our Club friends to celebrate the joy of the Holiday Season. And it’s always very special to see so many of our significant others in their holiday finest and looking so very lovely.

This year’s site for the dinner was again the

beautiful Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley. We

enjoyed our own spacious private dining room with a beautifully decorated Christmas Tree. And for our sit-down dinner we enjoyed a choice of two delicious entrees with all the trimmings including bread, salad and desert. For sure, no one went home feeling hungry.

We’re very pleased to report that we had 70 members and guests in attendance. Our sincere thanks go once again to Ken & Patty Steele who personally handled all the arrangements with the hotel to get us an incredible deal at a wonderful location. Thank you guys so very much.

With our appetites fulfilled it was time to move on to the other fun parts of the evening. First up was the presentation of the annual Club Appreciation Awards by Club President Jim Andrews. Unfortunately the beautiful certificates that we normally hand out were not ready in time (they will be given out at the February Meet), but the very deserving recipients (please see complete list to the right) were named and recognized at the Dinner.

Next up was our annual Ladies Only Drawing, the Club’s way of showing our ladies that we appreciate their toleration of our “little-boy” hobby. Tickets were given to each of the ladies present and then ten winning tickets were drawn. The lucky ticket holders chose from ten $25 Gift Cards that the Club had purchased. This year’s lucky winners were:

Adelaida Medalla Victoria’s Secret Carmen Mrowka J. C. Penny Cheryl Dennish Target Consuelo Soto C. Bath & Body Works Laurine Leeke Kohl’s Karen Johnson Nordstrom Montse Hohnhorst Hobby Lobby Nancy Wood Sears Patti Mitre Macy’s Patti Steele New York & Co.

A friend of Bob Wall, Heidi Lee, also donated a beautiful Gift Basket that was won by Michino Smith. We would like to thank Ken Steele for purchasing the ten Gift Cards.

And to conclude the evening’s festivities we once again enjoyed the Club’s Biggest Raffle of the Year. As he does year after year, Bob Wall did another incredible job of gathering together a ton of wonderful train “goodies”. The extensive list of happy winners can be found on page 7.

And we would be amiss if we didn’t extend a warm Thank You! to Jon Everett who, as he does every year, handled all our reservations for the dinner and took care of the financial dealings with the Handlery.

As you can tell it was a wonderful and festive evening. But it would not have been the success it was without all of you who were in attendance who helped make it a so special. Thank you so much for attending. And for those who didn’t or couldn’t attend we really hope that you’ll be able to join us next year for another wonderful Christmas Dinner.

You will find photos from the Dinner farther on in this MainLine.

2016 CLUB APPRECIATION AWARDS

At the end of each year the Club believes it is important to recognize those members whose exceptional support and service help make our Club the enjoyable and successful group it continues to be year after year. These efforts include meeting hall setup, cleanup & takedown, clinic instructors, refreshments, raffle & modular display donations, setup & takedown of the Club Modular Layout, club advertising and much, much more.

At the Christmas Dinner the 2016 Club Appreciation Award Recipients were proudly announced:

Andy Anderson Cheryl Lyman Pat Archer Steve Mitton Doug Bowen Larry Pearson Marshal Carpenter Caroline Poindexter Lee Davis Christine Poindexter Ron Decker Mike Quigg Tom Feldscher Bob Shaw Bart Grey Bob Shultz Bill Hess Anthony Tarantino Gary Jarvis Kristian Tristan Scott Lewis Spencer Wood Tim Lewis SD Model RR Museum Brian Liesberg

We extend a very warm and sincere “Thank You!” to each one of these deserving recipients.

BOARD MEETING REPORT

JANUARY 3RD

The Board held its first meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, January 3rd at the SDRRM in Balboa Park.

BOD Attendees: Jim Andrews, Dave Campbell, Bart Greg, Steve Pierce, Bob Shaw, Greg Smyth, Bob Wall, & Jim Weatherford

BOD Absentees: Jon Everett, Ed Jones, Rebecca Jones, Bob Hatton, Bill Hohnhorst, & Ken Steele

Visitors in Attendance: Caroline Poindexter & Christine Poindexter

1. Kobey’s Swap Meet Display & Sale – The consensus on the event was that overall presentation was good. The public really enjoyed seeing the trains and talking to the club members present. But, it would have been better if we had had more operators. On Saturday, the table sales were poor, but were good on Sunday. The overall feeling is that it

Page 6: The Main-Line - AGTTAyouth when we regarded them as toys, something to be used for motorized mayhem such as smoke-puffing battering rams: pity the unfortunate Tiny Tears doll lashed

January, 2017 6 AGTTA PDF Extended Version Main-Line

was quite worth the effort. It was agreed that we should try to do two or three of these events in the coming year, but only for one day (Sunday) vice the two.

2. Soda & Water at Meets – It was agreed that it would be nice to have refreshments at our monthly Meets, but that the job of bringing them should be shared and not put on one person. So they will be voluntarily rotated each month. Jim Andrews volunteered to bring them to the January Meet and Greg Smyth will do the February Meet. If you would like to volunteer to help out and bring liquid refreshments to one of our Meets please contact Jim Andrews.

3. Meet Two Table Limitation – At this time we are forced to maintain the 2-table per member Meet limitation. This is due to St. Dunstan’s not having an adequate supply of tables and that at this point we are not able to store the Club tables at the church. Of course, any member is welcome to bring their own tables, no problem. We are working on trying to find a solution to this limitation.

4. Great American Train Show (GATS) – will be held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on the weekend of February 18 & 19. The Club has received a confirmation letter for our attendance at the show in which we will have our 5-Rail Modular Layout. They also offered an honorarium of $150.

5. Spring Run at SDMRRM – The tentative dates for running our 5-Rail Layout in the Pacific Room at the Museum is May 22 through June 5. Bob Wall will ensure these dates are confirmed.

6. 501(c)(3) Donation – The Club has received its first 501(c)(3) donation. The collection is in the process of being documented and evaluated. It was suggested that we have an auction at the March Meet to sell the majority of the trains. In addition Club Members could also bring items to be auctioned.

7. AGTTA Website Updated – Rebecca Jones has updated the website to reflect the 2017 information (i.e. Board of Directors & Meet Dates). The Board agreed to ask her to add a Club Contact List to the site.

8. Motormen Need Help – The Motormen have been doing some great layouts at Poway Park events. But they could use our help in manning and running trains on their layout. It was agreed to have Jim Weatherford send them a Club Roster so that they can reach out

and contact members who live in the surrounding area.

9. Certificates of Appreciation – We have had some difficulties in getting the 2016 certificates produced. They will be available and handed out at the February Meet.

10. “Rainey Day Fund” – Jim Andrews suggested that we establish a fund that would be available in case of an emergency. This was thought to be a good idea. Bob Wall will open a bank account for this purpose.

11. Club’s Tables – We are still looking for a single place to store the Club’s tables. Currently there is no room at St. Dunstan’s and they are being stored at several member’s homes.

12. Raffle Funds – The Board approved providing Bob Wall with $1K of funds to buy items for the upcoming Meet Raffles.

13. Christmas Dinner Location - A suggestion was made that we look at the Sizzler’s (in Murphy Canyon) as a possible sight for our next Christmas Dinner.

14. AGTTA 50th Anniversary – In 2019 we will celebrate our 50th year anniversary. It was suggested that we should look into having a special car or accessory created that members could purchase to celebrate this momentous occasion.

The Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM.

No Discrimination Policy

We have been asked what the reasoning is behind the No Discrimination Policy form that we are asking members to read and sign when they complete their 2017 Renewals.

In our politically correct world we need to remind people that an individual's personal prejudices are not appropriate to be displayed or voiced at public activities and they can have costly consequences to the organization's reputation and finances. There have been three instances of this at train organizations in the past quarter one of which hit the TV.

As a new, public, non-profit we are taking extra steps to assure our members can have a fun social experience at our events and not be offended by some thoughtless expression.

We hope all members will appreciate the fact that we are just trying to protect the Club and its members.

2017 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL DUES

As we head into 2017 one bit of yearly business that needs to be attended to is the payment of our Club Dues for the New Year. And once again there is good news to share. Even though postage rates and insurance costs have continued to rise, the rental cost of our new Hall is less, and therefore we’ve been able to keep the Club dues the same, for 11 years in a row now.

A major reason we’ve been able to do this is that a large majority of you who have opted for receiving the PDF Extended Version MainLine via e-mail. By doing this you’ve helped save the Club well over $1,000 in printing/postage costs. Many Clubs no longer even send out a hard copy of their Newsletter for the very reason that it costs so much.

To encourage members to receive the e-mailed PDF MainLine and to give back to those who benefit our Club by opting out of receiving the hard copy version, the By-Laws provide a $5.00 reimbursement on the 2017 dues for any Member who chooses to receive the e-mailed PDF MainLine only.

If you haven’t done so already, we hope you’ll give serious consideration to receiving the electronic PDF MainLine. You’ll help the Club save money AND you’ll receive a superior 20-page plus electronic MainLine with all kinds of additional materials, pictures and other “goodies” that will just simply not fit in the limited hardcopy 8-page version. AND you’ll have an extra Five Bucks in your pocket. Please just check the appropriate box on the Renewal Form and help keep our dues low for years to come. And Thanks.

The Motormen, represented by Brian Liesberg this season, set up another wonderful old time Christmas Train Display at Poway Park. Brian sent along the following report:

“We had many visitors pass through during the short hours during Christmas in the Park, lots of smiling children eager to see the shiny tinplate trains flying around the track. The kicker was the new Standard Gauge State Set, towering over little kid’s heads as it rumbled by.

All went fairly well, apart from a small layout change the day of ("O" gauge figure 8 became an oval). We had some very happy winners of our triple set raffle, and the money we raised with it allowed us to purchase some good new track for the Standard Gauge.

All in all the event was great and I'm excited to make it even bigger this year!

Another Great Job Brian! Club Members, these guys continue to do some really neat things. We need to help them out in any way we can when they need our help for future events.

Here are some pictures of the display that Brian sent along.

INFO: California STATE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION San Diego District Office 15015 Avenue of Science, Suite 200 San Diego, California 92128 (858) 385-4700 When you sell or lease merchandise, vehicles, or other tangible personal property in California, even temporarily, you are generally required to register with our agency, the Board of Equalization (BOE), and to pay sales tax on your taxable sales. When you register, we will issue you a seller’s permit. Sometimes people incorrectly refer to a seller’s permit as a resale number or resale permit. A seller’s permit is a state license that allows you to sell items at the wholesale or retail level and to issue resale certificates to suppliers. Issuing a resale certificate allows you to buy items you will sell in your business operations without paying amounts for tax to your suppliers.

Generally, if you make three or more sales in a 12-month period, you are required to hold a seller’s permit. This applies even if your sales are made through Internet auction houses, such as eBay and uBid, or websites that offer online classified advertisements (online advertisers) such as Craigslist. For additional information, please see publication 177, Internet Auction Sales and Purchases, available at www.boe.ca.gov or call our Customer Service Center at 1-800-400-7115 (TTY:711).

When you have a garage sale and sell used items, you are generally not required to hold a seller’s permit unless you have more than two garage sales in a 12-month period or are required to hold a seller’s permit for being engaged in the business of selling merchandise, goods or items (tangible personal property). Please see Regulation 1595, Occasional Sales - Sale of A Business - Business Reorganization.

Making sales of merchandise, goods or other items in California without first getting a seller’s permit violates the law and subjects you to fines and penalties.

Register Online - http://www.boe.ca.gov/

Register online for a seller's permit, use tax account, or other tax and fee programs. It is the convenient way to apply anytime, day or night, 7 days a week (the system is unavailable from Sunday at 7:00 pm to Monday at 5:00 am, Pacific Time, for routine maintenance). Many applicants will be able to obtain their permit immediately after they submit their application.

Register In Person You may register for a seller's permit or use tax account in person at one of our field offices. Registration can usually be completed the same day and help in completing the application is available. Special information packets with the appropriate registration application for specific businesses are available.

Representatives are available to assist you with permit questions Monday through Friday (except State holidays) from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Toll-free: 1-800-400-7115 (TTY: 711) Outside the US: 1-916-445-636
