In 1813 a huge breakthrough in railway engineering took placeright here in Wylam. William Hedley developed the first adhesionsteam engine to haul coal from Wylam Colliery to Lemingtonstaithes. The Puffing Billy Festival organised by community groupsfrom Wylam, Heddon, Newburn and Lemington is celebrating this200th anniversary.
Related events in Wylam today include:Scoutrail - 14 model railways on display, plus associated stands inthe Institute today and tomorrow Sunday from lOam till 4pm. Theorganisers, Wylam Scouts, also providing refreshments.
Look out for the Puffing Billy trail between the venues.
Wylam Parish Council Railway Museum - with its newly-installedmoving scale models of Puffing Billy and Wylam Dilly is openall day.
George Stephenson's Cottage - half a mile east along the famouswaggonway, will be staffed by National Trust volunteers in periodcostume and is free to enter today and tomorrow. Refreshments areavailable from its pleasant cafe.
