Lounsbury Lingo

You will notice a wide variety of surname spellings associated with the Lounsbury Tree. The most commonspelling is “Lounsbury” though “Lounsberry” and “Lounsbery” are also prevalent. In 99% of researched cases,Canadians and Americans with these surname spellings are linked by common ancestors: Richard Lounsbury andElizabeth (Pennoyer) Lounsbury of what is now Rye, NY, who were married there in 1670. There are many othersurname variations who fit our extended family tree, including Lansbury (though apparently not the famous actressAngela Lansbury), Lainspeary, and Lonsberry.

For simplicity, we use the letter “L” to denote the surname regardless of its spelling. Hence the phrasing “L”Tree at the top of this page.

Alabama CensusPeter Lounsberry; Mobile Township, Mobile County, 1818; petitioners list; Page – NPN; Database AL1811 – 1819Tax Lists Index (Ancestry.com)

War of 1812 Land WarrantsThe first series of warrants for War of 1812 service were issued under acts of December 24, 1811, January 11, 1812,and May 6, 1812, in which Congress provided that noncommissioned officers and soldiers serving for 5 years (unlessdischarged sooner), or their heirs, would be entitled to 160 acres of land from the public domain in partialcompensation for their military service. Six million acres of land in the Territories of Michigan, Illinois, andLouisiana were set aside for this purpose. The second series resulted from an act of December 10, 1814, by which Congress doubled the acreage offered tosoldiers enlisting after that date. Warrants issued under the act were called Double Bounty Warrants.About the War of 1812 Warrants:The majority of the records for the War of 1812 are of original warrants.Warrants 1-2519 under the act of 1812, and warrants 1-79 under the act of 1814 were detached from the originalvolumes. For these warrant numbers, the warrant stub is provided in place of the original warrant. Also, the location of warrants 27116-28085 under the act of 1812, and warrants 1077-1101 under the act of 1814 isunknown by the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). They may have beendestroyed. However, copies of warrants 27116-28085 from the Veterans Administration are available on microfilmedprior their misplacement and are included in this database.Warrants usually contain the following information: Name of veteran Rank on discharge from service Company, regiment, and branch of service Date warrant was issued Usually the date the land was located and the page on which the location is recorded in Abstracts of MilitaryBounty Land Warrant Locations

Warrant stubs usually include the following information: Warrant number Name, rank, and regiment of veteran Date of location and the citation from the Abstracts of Military Bounty Land Warrant Locations

Note: Warrants issued for War of 1812 service could not be transferred or assigned to another person except throughinheritance.Manuscript Indexes:Images of manuscript indexes created by the U.S. government for both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812warrants are included as part of this database. The Revolutionary War warrant indexes for the first series are called “Index to the Register of Army LandWarrants” and the “Register of Army Land Warrants per Acts of 1796 and 1799.” The Index to the Register contains entries arranged alphabetically by the first letter of the surname of thewarrant holder who registered and located his warrant on land in the U.S. Military District of Ohio between 1799 and1805. Entries give the warrant number, the number of acres shown on the warrant, and the page number in the registerwhere the name of the veteran or of the warrant holder is cited. The Register of Army Land Warrants contains entries arranged chronologically by date of warrantregistration from April 11, 1799, to March 20, 1805. Entries give the registration date, the name of the patentee, andthe name and the service rank of the warrantee. The Revolutionary War warrant indexes for the second series (issued under the acts of 1803 and 1806) are called“Index to Revolutionary War Military Bounty Land Warrants Issued Under the Acts of 1803 and 1806” andthe “Register of Military Land Warrants Presented at the Treasury for Locating and Patenting, 1804-1835.”

In an earlier edition of the Tree we inserted the first five generations of the L-b-y line from Richard theimmigrant as we knew it at the time. From time to time it is my intention to insert other lines of descendants fromthat time leaving out those who may still be alive. With apologies to those who contributed I am leaving out mostsources and citations in the interest of brevity. If you wish more documentation with respect to the sources or if youhave corrections or additions please do not hesitate to contact the editor. Epenetus is actually of the fourth generationfrom the immigrant and is the ancestor of Albert Lounsbury, esteemed former editor of the Tree and who alsocontributed so much to the family history and two of the international reunions and the reunions of his immediate line.

If you have pictures, stories, etc. that can add to this please send them to me or to the blog.

DALE HAWKINS LANSBERRY, 68 FALLBROOK -- Dale Hawkins Lansberry, 68, passed away Wednesday,December 10, 2008 of cancer at his Fallbrook home. He was born Dec. 16, 1939 in Van Nuys,California to Leonora and Ai Lansberry. He attended Van Nuys High School and ValleyCollege where he successfully competed in gymnastics and specialized in rope climbing. Healso entered upon the Southern California boat racing scene where he purchased and raced awood flat bottom boat named "Sizzler." In the 1960's, Dale worked for the City of Los Angeleswhere he discovered his lifelong career of land surveying. After a number of years working forthe city, he grew tired of government inefficiencies and his ambition led him to the privatesector. Moving to Fallbrook with his family in 1973, Dale became a Licensed Land Surveyorand started his own surveying business. He surveyed many North County properties and waswell respected by contractors and homeowners for his ability and desire to help them with

difficult projects. He was still surveying until and beyond his cancer diagnosis in the fall of 2008. Twenty years afterselling "Sizzler," Dale happened by its sister boat "Shockwave" rotting and for sale on a Fallbrook street corner. Hispassion reignited, he purchased it and spent years on its restoration. Its beautiful wood deck rivals any fine furnitureand coupled with a powerful V8 engine it's a sight to behold. Complementing the boat is a custom-built hardwoodtrailer he fabricated from scratch and which receives almost as much attention as the boat itself. During the past fewyears he showed it locally at Hot Summer Nights and raced in vintage boat races around the west. Dale was a verysocial person and enjoyed meeting new people and old friends. His thundering voice, rambunctious attitude andmischievous grin were his trademarks. At his request, no services were held as he preferred for people to rememberhim while enjoying their own favorite activity. During his brief fight with cancer, he showed remarkable grace, wasthankful for the life he had led, and expressed no regrets. Dale is survived by his wife, Maria Lansberry; son, ChadLansberry; daughters and sons-in law, Holly and Keith DeCuir of Fallbrook, Barbara Holder and Marco de Carvalho

JAMES AND LUCINDA LOUNSBERRY/LOUNSBURY/LONSBURY

Who were the ancestors of James Lounsberry and his wife Lucinda.? In the 1871 Canada Census, forHay Township, Hurion County his birth place was listed as the USA, about 1803, occupation: cooper (barrelmaker) and religion as Wesleyan Methodist..

His known children are;Mary J. Lounsberry born about 1830Betsy born about 1833Eliza born about 1837Sarah Jane born about 1843, in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario

Mary Jane married John W. Melick on October 22, 1850, in Blenheim Township, in what is nowOxford County.. Sarah Jane married George Wilson on January 2, 1860 in Huron County, Ontario, Canada.

Might there be a connection between these Lounsberrys and the following people who were also inOxford County?

James Lounsberry who married Harriett Arnold on December 9, 1849 in the Brock District. Part ofthe Brock District was Oxford County. The witnesses were Hannah Van Valkenburg and Henry VanValkenburg. James and Harriett lived in Norfolk County, Ontario and Elgin County, Ontario, But latermoved to Saginaw, Michigan. It is possible that the Van Valkenburgs were Henry Van Valkenburg whomarried Hannah Lounsbury on March 8, 1868 in Zorra Township of Oxford County, Ontario.
