Souper Bowl 2014
Human slavery – also known as human trafficking is
still happening today!
An estimated 21 million people, including children as
young as age five, are trafficked for commercial sex
or forced labor across our world today.
Large sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, are
known to provide a lucrative market for human
traffickers. During the days leading up to the Super
Bowl event, Federal, State, and Local Law
Enforcement Authorities will conduct surveillance
operations in an attempt to prevent human
traffickers from conducting their “business.”
Faith communities and many civil society groups
have been active educating hotel staff and the wider
public about human trafficking. It is our hope and
prayer that Super Bowl XLVIII will be a Big Win in
our nation’s efforts to end Human Trafficking.
We recently welcomed Jeffrey, Elena and Joseph Ripa
to Saint Aloysius Parish.

Dear Parishioner,
Leviticus 12:1-4 indicates that for a Jewish male
child, there should be an offering made in the Temple
forty days after birth. Today we celebrate the feast of the
Lord’s Presentation, 40 days after Christmas.
Speaking to the Council on the Family last
October, Pope Francis said, “Children and the elderly
represent the two poles of life and are also the most
vulnerable and often the most forgotten group. A society
that abandons its children or marginalizes its elderly not
only carries out an injustice, but also sanctions the failure
of that society.”
How do you think our society is doing?
Pay attention to the wonderful characters in the
Gospel of today’s feast of the Presentation of Jesus, also
known as Candlemas Day: a poor couple with an infant,
an old man and an elderly widow.
How many children are raised far away from
grandparents who would love to dote on them and love
them? How many elderly are desperately lonely, taken
care of by strangers in institutions where no one wants to
hear “their stories”? Should we begin to consider more
carefully the cost of separation within families? Does the
“career move” have a human cost that is never computed?
Does living in a warm climate have too high a price?
What is life about anyway?
Learn from the old. There’s a great difference
between technological expertise and the wisdom that is the
product of thoughtful experience and a well-lived life. To
be happy, we have to take care of each other – and learn
from each other.
Sincerely in Christ,
Msgr. Desmond
