The Lord’s Day in Worship COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Thirdd Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017 The four creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and lives from aeon to aeon. This means that they render or ascribe to Him that which belongs to Him. They acknowledge that all these things are His, and cannot belong to any other. They acknowledge Him as God. Hence they do not do anything which is strange, but that which is natural and self-evident to their nature as creatures. They do not do anything which is particularly solemn or festal, but that which is supremely everyday. They do that which is proper to them and to all creatures from the very first. They do not know any other creaturely act but that which they fulfil with the threefold “holy.” To be sure, this is a liturgy, but it is the kind of liturgy which can find a true correspondence on earth on when earthly creatures join the heavenly with the same self-evident totality. —Karl Barth, Church Dogmatics III.3

7 OPENINg HYmN

“Let Us Love And Sing And Wonder”

Let us love and sing and wonder Let us praise the Savior’s name

He has hushed the law’s loud thunder He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame

He has washed us with His blood He has washed us with His blood

He has washed us with His blood He has brought us nigh to God

Let us love the Lord Who bought us Pitied us when enemies

Called us by His grace and taught us Gave us ears and gave us eyes

He has washed us with His blood He has washed us with His blood

He has washed us with His blood He presents our souls to God

Let us sing though fierce temptation Threatens hard to bear us down

For the Lord, our strong salvation, Holds in view the conqu’ror’s crown

He, Who washed us with His blood, He, Who washed us with His blood,

He, Who washed us with His blood, Soon will bring us home to God

Let us wonder grace and justice Join and point to mercy’s store

When through grace in Christ our trust is Justice smiles and asks no more

He Who washed us with His blood He Who washed us with His blood

He Who washed us with His blood Has secured our way to God

Let us praise and join the chorus Of the saints enthroned on high

Here they trusted Him before us Now their praises fill the sky

Thou hast washed us with Thy blood Thou hast washed us with Thy blood

Thou hast washed us with Thy blood Thou art worthy Lamb of God.

7 SECOND HYmN

“Come Ye Sinners”

Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, Weak and wounded, sick and sore;

Jesus, ready, stands to save you, Full of pity, joined with power.

He is able, He is able;

He is willing; doubt no more.

Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God's free bounty glorify;

True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh.

Without money, without money

Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Bruised and broken by the fall;

If you tarry 'til you're better, You will never come at all.

Not the righteous, not the righteous;

Sinners Jesus came to call.

Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream;

All the fitness He requires Is to feel your need of Him.

This He gives you, this He gives you,

'Tis the Spirit's rising beam.

Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; Pleads the merit of His blood.

Venture on Him; venture wholly, Let no other trust intrude.

None but Jesus, none but Jesus

Can do helpless sinners good.

OLD TESTAmENT READINg

Isaiah 6:1-7

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon

a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the

temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with

two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and

with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory!

4And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him

who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5And I said: “Woe

is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in

the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the

King, the Lord of hosts!”

6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a

burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And

he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your

lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Pastor: Thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits

eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy

place, but also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,

to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of

the contrite.”

Isaiah 57:15

ALL: Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from the grave

and crowned him Lord of all.

We confess that we have not bowed before him

or acknowledged his rule in our lives.

We have gone along with the way of the world

and failed to give him glory.

Forgive us and raise us from sin,

that we may be your faithful people,

obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen.

7ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor: “I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him

and restore comfort to him and to his mourners, creating

the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace to the far and to the near,”

says the LORD, “and I will heal him.”

Isaiah 57:18-19

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and

remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of

life, and the grace and consolation of His Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

HYmN OF RESPONSE AND gIVINg OF FIRST FRUITS

“Come Ye Souls By Sin Afflicted"

Come ye souls by, sin afflicted,

Bowed with fruitless, sorrow down;

By the broken, law convicted,

Through the cross, behold the crown;

Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;

Mercy flows through Him alone.

Take His easy, yoke and wear it;

Love will make your, obedience sweet;

Christ will give you, strength to bear it,

While His grace, shall guide your feet

Safe to glory, Safe to glory, Safe to glory,

Where His ransomed captives meet.

Blessèd are the, eyes that see Him,

Blest the ears that, hear His voice;

Blessèd are the, souls that trust Him,

And in Him, alone rejoice;

His commandments, His commandments, His commandments

Then become their happy choice.

Sweet as home to, pilgrims weary,

Light to newly, opened eyes,

Like full springs in, deserts dreary,

Is the rest, the cross supplies;

All who taste it, All who taste it, All who taste it

Shall to rest immortal rise.

Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus; Look to Jesus;

Mercy flows through Him alone.

7 PASSINg OF THE PEACE

Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen.

People: He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Greet one another with words of peace and reconciliation such as

those above.

PREPARATION FOR COmmUNION

The “passing of the peace” precedes the Lord’s Supper as a liturgical reminder

of our unity as members of Christ’s body. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 implores us

to not let factions and divisions remain in our midst. Thus, the peace calls us

to move toward our brothers and sisters as Christ moves toward us.

All who are united in Christ Jesus by faith and are baptized, communing

members of His visible Church are invited to come to the Lord’s Table. If you

are not communing but would like to participate, come forward and fold

your hands, and you will receive a prayer of blessing from the server.

gOSPEL READINg

Revelation 4

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven!

And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a

trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take

place after this.” 2At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne

stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. 3And he who sat

there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around

the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 4Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the

thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with

golden crowns on their heads. 5From the throne came flashes of

lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the

throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven

spirits of God, 6and before the throne there was as it were a sea of

glass, like crystal.

And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living

creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7the first living creature

like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living

creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like

an eagle in flight. 8And the four living creatures, each of them with

six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night

they never cease to say,

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,

who was and is and is to come!”

9And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and

thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and

ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated

on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They

cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

gOD WELCOmES US TO HIS TABLE

INVITATION

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

he descended into hell;

the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church;

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

from 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Mark 14:22-25

PRAYER OF HUmBLE ACCESS

ALL: We do not presume to come to this your Table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your

manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much

as to gather up the crumbs under your Table, but you

are the same Lord whose property is always to have

mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the

flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His

blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by His

body and our souls washed through His most precious

blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us.

Amen.

CONSECRATION OF THE ELEmENTS

Celebrant: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon

us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine,

that the bread we break and the cup we bless

may be the communion of the body and blood

of Christ. By your Spirit make us one with Christ,

that we may be one with all who share this feast,

united in ministry in every place. As this bread

is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body

of Christ in the world.

*If you desire gluten free bread, please walk down the center aisle, either upstairs or

down, and the server will provide it accordingly. Congregation will sing the printed

hymns during Communion.

HYmNS FOR THE EUCHARIST

“Christ is Made the Sure Foundation”

For the bread which you have broken,

For the wine which you have poured,

For the words, which you have spoken,

Now we give you thanks O Lord.

By this pledge that you do love us,

By your gift of peace restored,

By your call to heaven before us,

Sanctify our lives O Lord.

With our sainted ones in glory,

Seated at our Father’s board,

May the Church that waits now for Thee,

Keep love’s tie unbroken Lord.

In your service Lord defend us.

In our hearts keep watch and ward.

In the world where’r you send us,

May your kingdom come O Lord.

“Be Thou My Vision”

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word;

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;

Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,

Thou mine inheritance, now and always:

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High king of heaven, my victory won,

May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O ruler of all.
