Good Day Chamber friends,
Thank you to the community for coming out to support our local restaurants during Lompoc’s 3rd Annual Restaurant Week! 2018 was a record breaking year with almost 30,000 menu downloads! That is an average of over 1,400 downloads for each restaurant! Read the Lompoc Record’s article HERE.
The 2nd Annual Dance Lompoc was a huge success and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I’d like to send a huge thanks to our dancers, instructors, and volunteers who made this event possible. Special kudos to Stacy Lowthrop of Southside Coffee who won the People’s Choice award for the most funds raised for the Lompoc Theatre Project and to Chuck Madson who won the judges over with his Paso Doble taking home the Mirror Ball trophy and title of “Lompoc Valley Star.”
Be on the look out for details on Small Business Saturday taking place April 30-May 6th. CalChamber AlertsCalChamber Alerts offer insights on how pending legislation, regulations, court decisions, ballot mea-sures and more could have a significant impact on how California employers do business.
7 Ballot Measures Threaten California Business Climate - Voters may face as many as seven bal-lot measures damaging to California’s business and political climate in November. Any one of these mea-sures should motivate millions in opposition spend-ing by affected industries. More than a few are likely to qualify for the ballot.
Law Requires Advance Warning of Mass Layoffs for Some Employers - The answer to your question depends on whether your company is signatory to a collective bargaining agreement that would require advance notice to a union and/or whether your com-pany is covered under the federal or state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) acts.
This Is What Record-Low Unemployment Looks Like in America - What will happen when the U.S. unemployment rate falls below 4%, which is expect-ed to occur by this summer? One way to tell, look at cities where joblessness is already lower than that.
U.S., State Economic Stability Contrasts with Turmoil on Social, Political Fronts - From a po-litical standpoint, 2017 will go down as one of the most chaotic periods in recent U.S. history, al-though it may well end up being overshadowed by 2018.Economically, on the other hand, 2017 was fairly ho-hum. Overall U.S. gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) output will have expanded by 2.3% in real terms once the fourth quarter is added. This is a better showing than in 2016, but a weaker one than the previous two years with exports and busi-ness investment looking stronger, while consumer spending has softened. Despite all this, politicians continue to tout job creation in connection with al-most any policy put forward, despite the lack of workers to fill these positions.

SBC (Santa Bar-bara County) held a community meeting in Carpinteria on Tuesday, Feb. 20th re: risks associated with storms, what to do when an evacuation order is issued, fu-ture storm risks and more. For more info, go to the website mentioned above. Calle Cesar Chavez in Santa Barbara and open M, T, Th, F from 9 – 6 pm and W, Sat from 9 – 3 pm. Cannabis Ordinance – Marijuana-Related Tax will be on the June 5th ballot. The tax would apply to commercial marijuana-relat-ed operations in the unincorporated areas of SBC as follows: Businesses would have to pay 1% of gross receipts for nursery op-erations, 1% of gross receipts for distributor operations, 3% of gross receipts for manu-facturers, 4% gross receipts on cultivators, 6% gross receipts for retailers, and 6% for micro-businesses.Revenue generated from the Tax will be for “general government pur-poses such as law enforcement, healthcare, parks, roads and other” items. Upcoming Projects/Issues – We are hold-ing office hours in Lompoc for constituents to “walk-in” and talk with Supervisor Adam on March 8th from 2:00-4:30 pm at the Lompoc Veterans’ Memorial Building. If you have an issue and are not able to come, we encour-age you to call for assistance or to make an appointment.

Small Business Recognition
2018 Chairman’s
Each month, in an effort to support small busi-ness in Assembly District 35, which includes all of San Luis Obispo County and Northern Santa Barbara County, Assemblyman Jordan Cunning-ham will recognize a small business. Assembly-man Cunningham or district staff will come to the business, take photos and give the owners a sign of recognition they can hang in their win-dow, and they will also send out a press release and promote the business on social media.
If you would like to nominate a business, send Jocelyn Brennan, District Director for Assembly-man Cunningham’s office, an email including: name and location of business, years of opera-tion, name and contact info for the owner/own-ers, why you feel the business deserves to be nominated, and does this business give back to the community or sponsor a nonprofit event, etc?
