Surry Community College’s Main Campus, the Elkin Center and the Yadkin Center are the places where our workforce can be trained and re-trained for the jobs of today and the careers of the future. On Wednesday, January 11, 2012 the

Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors gathered at the Elkin Center to present the Elkin Center Di-rector Ray Hall; Elkin Center Outreach Coordinator, Chamber Board Member and Chamber Ambassador Chad Shore; and the New Surry Community College President, Dr. David Shockley, with the January Member of the Month Award. Chamber President Laurette Leagon cited the valuable training the Com-munity College provides, plus its heavy involvement in Chamber-sponsored activities throughout the year as the reason for the award. Chamber Ambassador Chair Jerry

Stroud of Duke Energy said, “It was very nice to have Dr. Shockley join us for the presentation. I was impressed by his eagerness to make sure the Community College and the Cham-ber work closely on the projects and programs that will benefit our community as a whole.”

Career Connections Opens in Elkin

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina opened its newest Career Connections Center at 1457 N. Bridge Street in Elkin on Monday, February 13. A partnership between Good-will, Surry Community College and Piedmont Triad Regional Council, the Center offers free resources and personalized career services to job seekers, including resume writing, computers with high-speed internet access, job search resources and case management. To celebrate the opening of the center and to pro-

vide members of the community an opportunity to learn about the services available, an open house will be held as follows:

“In today’s economic climate, we see more and more people who need these services,” said Reni Geiger, Goodwill Director of Workforce Development Services. “It was only natural to col-laborate with these like-minded organizations so that we can pool our resources and augment our collective impact in the community.”

Grape Walk Coming This SpringIn the spring of 2012, the Town of Elkin Main Street Ad-

visory Board will be launching a shop local initiative, the Grape Walk, in partnership with businesses in Downtown Elkin. Participants will be able to pick up a card at any of the

participating businesses – denoted by a “Grape Walk par-ticipant” decal on their storefront,- Elkin Town Hall, and the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce. The card will display a cluster of grapes with clues that

will lead the participants on a search through the down-town district for the corresponding business. Once in the business, the participant will look for a ceramic cluster of grapes – made by local artisan, Doug McBride of Big

Elkin Creek Pottery - that will have a number engraved upon it. When the participant finds the grape cluster, they will write the number on their card.Participants can fill out the card at their leisure. When

the card is complete, it should be placed in the drop box in front of the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce, located at 116 East Market Street. Each month, a card will be drawn for a prize of Downtown Bucks in the amount of $25.00. For more information on this initiative, please contact

The FanTasTic shakers to Headline 2012 Yadkin Valley Wine Festival

The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival planning committee is pleased to announce that The Fantastic Shakers will headline the 11th Annual Festival on Saturday May 19, 2012 at Elkin Municipal Park. Known as “The South’s Finest Show Band,” they will be performing their repertoire of original and cover songs from 3 to 6p.m. on the day of the wine festival.

When contacted about their selection, The Fantastic Shakers keyboard and vocalist Freddy Tripp commented, “[We] are honored to have been selected as this year’s headline entertainment for the 2012 Yadkin Valley Wine Festival. We look forward to spending a wonderful afternoon at Elkin Municipal Park with our friends and fans from all over the area and enjoying the best wine offered in the Valley. We will see you on May 19th from 3-6.”

Sam Bishop, chairman of the festival planning committee added, “The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival Commit-tee is really excited having the Fantastic Shakers appearing at this year’s event. They are a well known group in this area and will really be a great addition to our entertainment schedule. We know that everyone attending the festival will enjoy their performance.”

Since the inception of the band in 1978, the band has performed over 6,000 engagements including wedding receptions, conventions, and clubs from New York to Florida and all throughout the Southeast. They have per-formed with many national artists including the Beach Boys, KC and the Sunshine Band, the Four Tops, Jan and Dean and many more. In addition to their own material, they perform covers from artists as varied as Al Green, Barry White, the Beatles, Carl Wilson, the Drifters, the Eagles, Elvis, Huey Lewis, Jimmy Buffett, the Righteous Brothers, Sam Cooke and Santana.

So, you say “what makes The Shakers different?” Personality! Fun! Charisma! From start to finish, a festival with The Fantastic Shakers is one big party. The music is great, but The Shakers are here for you to have a good time. The boys will keep you entertained from start to finish.

The 2012 festival opens at 11a.m. and runs through 6p.m. Opening act Natty Boh Duo will play from noon until 2p.m. Information about the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival, including how to obtain advance tickets, is avail-able at the Festival website, www.yvwf.com
