Jeff and I joined Lochland late in 2009. Our initial motive for joining was not only for the golfing, but for the wonderful social atmo-sphere. I am a little timid by nature, and don’t know a lot of people in Hastings. Since joining Lochland, I’ve met many fellow members, and have made a lot of new friends. Staff and members are very warm and inviting, and always encourage fel-
low members to participate in events. And there are so many events to take advantage of! I love the couple’s golf, and the many other activities make it a truly fun place to socialize.
Jeff has been an active golfer for several years, and loves the opportunity to golf on such a beautiful, challenging course as Lochland on a regular basis. I’d never golfed before we joined, so I was a little skittish about getting out there! But it only took one time on the course to realize there was nothing to be self-conscious about. Hank and the staff made me feel very comfortable and I am slowly learning the game. As 1 of my “new friends” advised me, I need to work that “new golfer” thing as long as I can! I was persuaded to join women’s league last year, and had a blast! No pressure—just enjoyed the game! And learned a lot. Since I’ve started golfing more, we have golfed at some of the other clubs around the state, and none compare to the beauty and opportu-
nities that Lochland provides. We’ve compared our membership to friends’ at other courses around, and we truly feel we have the best deal. As our job has us traveling the state, we find ourselves talking golf with many colleagues, and they all know of Lochland and its great reputation. We’re proud to be mem-bers. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to play tennis also with friends. As with all amenities here, it’s so enjoy-able to play on such well-kept courts. Since we are “empty-nesters” now, we find our-selves dining more frequently at the course, and we both LOVE the ever-changing menu! There is such a broad range, making frequent dining, and even week-day lunches affordable, but yet enjoy the luxu-ries of the aged beef and fresh seafood on occasion! It’s so nice to have a place to entertain guests and business associates.
This is the first year I’ve taken advantage of the pool, and frequented it often! It’s great entertain-ment not only for kids, but for adults as well. I just need to get Jeff out there to try the water volleyball yet!
There are so many more activities that I am not able to participate in because of that thing we all call “work”, but having them available is great! All the staff go above the call of duty to satisfy even the smallest request! I am so happy that we joined, and look forward to many more years of enjoyment!

Dear Lochland Family ~
With refreshing fall-like days becoming more regular and the count down tocollege football in its final stages, I reflect back onto all of the seasons of the club. I have now been with Lochland for 4.5 years. These short years have flown by for me and with my work with the Archive Committee, they seem like such a small blip on the radar of Lochland History - and they truly are! Our Club has a very rich his-tory - a history and culture that gives us the firm foundation upon which our Club now stands. Many of our current members created this history, giving us the op-portunities we see today. With the busy hustle and bustle of everyday life we forget to look back and acknowledge that without what these people did 50 years ago, we wouldn’t have the club that we do now. This can be attributed to our fabulous membership. We have great members; many of our members have been dedicated to Lochland for 40 or more years! Now that’s not such a small blip on the Lochland history radar.
Over the past few years, we have been collecting current items that mark our jour-ney at the club. It became very evident that something needed to be done to preserve and share this history with our Lochland Family. In January, a small group of members joined me in taking on the task of Archiving and preserving the history of our Club. We found some really great photos and scrapbooks from the 60s and 70s and then again from the 90s. Much of this work can be attributed to the Charter Members of Lochland, as well as the Ladies’ Golf Association - THANK YOU! These items will be used as the cornerstone of the archive.
Although we’ve got a great start, we still need help! This is where our members come into play. A good number of Charter Members are still with the Club and a lot of our younger members are part of a long family history in the club. If you or your fam-ily members have any items, articles, or photos that you would like to share or donate to the club, please contact me or any of our Archive Committee Members.
We look forward to creating quarterly historic displays in the new year as well as a featured showcase at the Presidents Ball in October of 2011. An unveiling of the Presidents Wall will also take place the evening of the Ball. The Archive Committee has done a TON of work and I thank you very much!

Junior Golf…the lifeblood of our Club The 2011 Junior Golf Program at Lochland Country Club remains as one of our cornerstones in growing the game of golf. In the All Sports Program alone, we have increased participation from 43 in our first year (2005) to 118 this year. We use SNAG golf equipment, which makes it easier, safer and more fun for our youngest camp participants. We also separate the camp into two 1-week camps, which keeps the kids fresh and excited about learning. We are excited that the word has “gotten out” about this great program, and we will continually make adjustments to the program as it grows. As a club, we MUST support Junior Golf…the kids that are growing up on the golf course now will be our future members of tomorrow, and we have to give them all the attention they deserve.
More important than our increases in numbers, I am really pleased with the eti-quette and sense of fair play our youngsters are learning. We run our juniors through a video series on Golf Etiquette, and we test them over the Rules of Golf, etiquette, and safety. We supply our juniors with “kid-ap-propriate” versions of the Rules of Golf, and we request all of our juniors to take their Rules/Etiquette/Safety tests home to Mom and Dad to test THEM over the rules. In addition, I am getting reports from adult mem-bers that our Juniors are letting the adults “play through”. I am excited that our Juniors are getting excited about golf, but more importantly, I am pleased that they are picking up on the rules and sportsmanship of this great game.
How, and why should I make a tee time?
Tee time intervals are set to account for the time it takes a golfer to hit both his/her first and second
shots. Because of this, if you have a 1:00 tee time and show up at 1:05, you have just delayed the rest of
the members who have tee times behind you. That is why we call up the 1:09 time if the 1:00 group has
not checked in. So…even if you are only going to play a quick 3 or 4 holes, please call us on your cell phone so that we may operate our tee sheet in the most effi-cient manner. In addition, if we know who has been
invited to play , we will have your clubs ready on a cart for you when you arrive! When calling out for a tee time, please give us the names of everyone in
your group. This insures that everyone’s bag is ready to go upon member arrival.

How can I get my child to get good at golf?
I cannot count the number of times I have been asked this question, and the answer is al-ways the same…BRING YOUR CHILDREN OUT TO THE CLUB AND PLAY AS A FAMILY IN THE EVENINGS AND ON WEEKENDS. Kids grow-
ing up in a golfing family, regardless of the ability of the parents, have a far better chance
of succeeding in golf. Kids whose parents love the game, will also grow up to love the game. There are so many different activities for kids these days, and far too often families get caught up in traveling “All-Star” baseball,
basketball, volleyball, etc. If your son or daugh-ter plays on a traveling “All-Star” baseball team
and they have a game in Lincoln, you will spend the whole day on the road and spend a small fortune on gas and meal expenses. Since
there are 12 kids on the team, everyone gets to play, so your son or daughter may only play 3-4 innings. If you really take an honest look at it, you have spent a whole day (and lots of money) to watch your son or daughter (from metal bleachers) play a combined 30 minutes of baseball. Would it not be better to spend 2
hours WITH your children enjoying one of life’s greatest games on one of the best golf courses
in the state of Nebraska? After playing golf, you could sit down with your family and have a wonderful meal at the best restaurant in the
Tri-Cities, ALL IN ONE PLACE AND ALL TO-GETHER AS A FAMILY!
Golf, takes a considerable amount of time to learn; however, it is an avenue to promote
family togetherness. So, if you really want your children to learn and enjoy golf as a LIFETIME sport, bring them out to the club in the eve-
nings after school...you and your children will be glad you did.
Should I post my golf score if I don’t
play a full round???The answer to this question is YES!!! By USGA rules, a golfer MUST post an 18 hole score if he or she plays at least 13 holes, and a golfer MUST post a 9 hole score if he or she plays at least 7 holes. Here is how it works:
Example: A player with a Course Handicap of 30 stops
playing after 15 holes due to darkness. Hole #16 (a par 4) has the 16th lowest handicap rating, hole #17 (a par 4) has the 2nd lowest handicap rating, and Hole #18 (a par 5) has the 8th lowest handicap rating. The golfer will report a 5 on hole #16 (par plus one handicap stroke), a 6 on hole #17 (par plus two handicap strokes) and a 7 on #18 (par plus two handicap strokes).
How did we figure out how many handicap strokes our golfer received? Remember his handicap was 30. This means he would get one stroke on all 18 holes, plus one more stroke on the hardest 12 holes on the golf course (18 + 12 = 30). Since hole #16 only had the 16th lowest handicap rating, our golfer would only get 1 stroke in-stead of 2.
The same process would follow if our golfer had to quit after hole #7 when he was only going to play 9 holes.
What happens if I pick up on a hole? The USGA tells us we still must post a score for any hole that where we pick up. What we must do in this instance is to record the most likely score we would have achieved.
Here’s how it works:Example: Our 30 handicap golfer is playing on Wednes-day Men’s League and his 2nd shot on hole #15 is sit-ting on the green 25 feet away from the hole. His group is a hole behind, and there is a team waiting on #15 tee. His partner holes out from the bunker for a natural birdie, which is good enough to win the hole. Our golfer SHOULD pick up his ball and record a 4. Why? Because it is reasonable to assume that he could 2 putt from 25 feet at least 50% of the time. If his second shot ended up 2 feet from the hole, he SHOULD pick up and record a 3, because it is reasonable to assume that he could hole a 2 foot putt at least 50% of the time. Please note, however, the player should only pick up IF HIS SCORE IS NOT GO-ING TO COUNT IN THE MATCH.

Sign up today next to the Player’s Lounge for the Labor Day 3 Couple “Florida” Scramble scheduled for
Monday, September 5th at 1:30PM. Due to the popularity of the Couples’ Nite Out “Florida” Scramble, we have changed the format from alternate shot to this exciting format. In the Florida Scramble, all players tee off and the best shot is selected. Everyone EXCEPT the person whose shot was selected hits the next shot. This is continued until the ball is on the green, then all players putt. So, all 6 players hit the tee shot, 5 players play from the fairway/rough, and then all 6 players putt. WHY SHOULD YOU SHOP AT LOCHLAND?1. Pricing – with your 20% Member Discount, our prices on most items are better than what you can find on the Internet or at major discount retailers!
2. Professional Club Fitting – we fit you on the range. . . not in a net where you can’t see the ball flight!
3. Service after the sale – having problems with your new purchase? Bring it in to us and we will help. You cannot do that on eBAY!
4. Ownership – You, as a Lochland Member own your own Golf Shop!!!
PACE of PLAY…We are spoiled here at Lochland Country Club…most 4-player rounds of golf are played in about 3 ½ hours. This is not at all typical at most golf courses, where 5 to 5 ½ hour rounds can be expected; HOWEVER, there are some things you can do to help eliminate “wasted” minutes on the course. Here are just a few:
1. Go to your own ball. If you are in a cart, the driver should drop the passenger off at his/her ball and then proceed immediately to his/her ball. If you are the passenger, take 3 or 4 clubs with you to make sure you have the right one for the shot. There will be plenty of time for your group to chit chat on the green or next tee, so do not waste time by going to each other’s ball .
2. Play “Ready Golf”. Forget about honors. If you are ready, hit your ball. Take less time deliberating on your shot…you should know what club you are going to hit when you are 10 yards from your ball.
3. Take only 1 (or 0) practice swings. You will not “learn” anything from a “practice”swing…the thousands of balls you have already hit over the years have already determined what your next swing is going to be like. If you need to relax your forearms, just waggle the club a little bit.
4. Write your scores down on the next hole. Do not sit in your cart next to the green and calculate your team match and scores…wait until you get to the next tee box.
5. When you have putted out on a hole, go to the next tee and hit…do NOT wait for everyone in your 4-some to putt.
6. Quit marking those 2 footers…just step up, aim at the center of the hole and ram it in…I promise you will make more short putts. Julius Boros once said that he would make 99 out of 100 two foot putts, WHETHER OR NOT HE TOOK HIS TIME Is up to YOU!!!
