WINTER HARP Nov 29
Hours after a large crowd from the community gath-ered at the Roberts Creek Legion for a moving Remem-brance Day ceremony, the very same Legion was target-ed during a break and enter that night.
Shortly before 4 am on November 12, the Roberts Creek Legion on Lower Road had one of its windows smashed out, and one of its exterior doors damaged dur-ing a break-in. A suspect or suspects forced their way into the building, and tried unsuccessfully to get into a liquor cabinet before flee-ing the scene prior to police arrival. Nothing appears to have been taken. Fortunately
some blood was left at the scene, as well as a grey Hur-ley baseball cap, similar to the one in the picture below.
“Breaking into a Legion on any day is low,” said Con-stable Harrison Mohr of the Sunshine Coast RCMP, “but breaking into a Legion on the night of Remembrance Day is really a shameful deed, and is an act of outright disrespect to our veterans and to those who serve our great country. The suspect involved will likely have injuries to their
"Shameful" break-in at Legionhands or arms, and is be-lieved to have worn a grey Hurley hat. We’re asking peo-ple to come forward with any tips about this break-in, so that we can quickly identify a suspect and help the Legion – and the community – to be at peace again.”
RCMP are pursuing fur-ther avenues of investiga-tion into this matter, includ-ing possible DNA analysis of the blood left at scene. If you have any information about this crime, please con-tact Sunshine Coast RCMP at (604) 885-2266, and refer-ence file #15-7917, or if you want to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS. Editorial Opinion
Letters to the Editor – OpinionsJust say no
(Sent to Peter Fassbinder, community development min-ister, and copied to the Local)
With reference to The Town of Gibsons' application to transfer funds from its Parks Acquisition Fund; I am writing you to ask you to refuse their request.
As a tax-paying citizen of this small but growing com-munity, I know we will require more parks or expansion of existing ones in the near fu-ture.
As of recently, October 6, our Mayor and council ap-proved a huge development on our waterfront that abuts our waterfront park. This will diminish the park with huge shade, relocation of its band shell and huge reconfigura-tion of its sea walk with ramps etc. right in front of the view. This hotel gains our park as its grounds so to speak while we, the town, have to maintain it. The town also leased the wa-ter lot in front of the park to the development as well for a marina. The public, in the form of small watercraft, will no longer have access to this park.
The park acquisition fund that the mayor and council want to transfer will be allo-cated to another development within steps of the hotel in the form of a public market. This is not a park! It is a tourist at-traction. The big problem is we do not have the popula-tion to keep it going all winter. This means it will constantly be a drain on our town. I like to believe that public markets evolve like the one on Salt Spring Island. This one is be-ing built with the hope that vendors will fill it. Not a good business plan and a bad in-vestment for public money. I liken it to the fast ferry fiasco.
Please say “no” to releasing or transferring these funds.Judith Bonkoff, Gibsons
Climate marchSunshine Coasters will join
millions around the world in
the Global Climate March in Vancouver at 1 pm on Sunday, Nov. 29 starting from the Van-couver Art Gallery on Georgia Street.
These marches will occur just hours before world lead-ers meet at the UN Paris Cli-mate Summit – COP21. Con-cerned citizens will fill their streets in some 2,000 marches around the world, setting out people-powered demands for the world we want and need. The key demands will be that COP21 come up with a treaty strong enough to keep the car-bon in the ground and inclu-sive of financial arrangements for a transition to a clean en-ergy future that is fair to all.
To let the world know that Canada is again prepared to accept our global responsi-bilities, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has invited the pro-vincial and territorial Pre-miers as well as federal op-position leaders to join him at the Paris Climate Summit.
The Coastal Climate Conver-gence, a new citizens action group including the Alliance 4 Democracy, Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, Sunshine Coast Community Solar Association and the Sun-shine Coast Senior Citizens invites Sunshine Coasters to join the march in Vancouver. We are arranging with West Vancouver Transit to schedule extra Blue Buses to transport people from Horseshoe Bay to downtown Vancouver from both the 8:50 am and 11:30 am Langdale/Horseshoe Bay sailings, and take them back to Horseshoe Bay at the end of the march for either the 5:30 pm or 7:25 pm sailings to Langdale.
Your participation in the Global Climate March Van-couver will help send a strong message to our representa-tives in Paris that Canadians care deeply about our planet and that we expect Canada to take a bold leadership role in addressing climate change both at home and internation-ally.

A Chamber winAs I boarded the plane to Ot-
tawa for the Canadian Cham-ber of Commerce AGM last month, I really felt like a little fish going into a big pond.
Our policies were the only ones of their kind, meaning they were more “green” lean-ing (advocating federal action on renewable energy and on combatting climate change).
Many of the proposed poli-cy submissions related to big business, international trade, GMOs in agriculture, nuclear energy, taxation, border cross-ing and pipeline expansion. I decided that I had to limit my-self to research and participate in only a few of the issues. I went prepared to speak to the GMO policy submitted by the Red Deer and Alberta Cham-ber of Commerce and the Nuclear Energy policy submit-ted by the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and the Energy East Pipeline Policy submitted by the Peterborough and St. John Chambers.
On the first morning of the event, the Ontario and Alberta Caucuses called me to their Chambers to discuss some of their concerns with the con-tent of our policies. We were able to work together to mas-sage the wording without losing the intent of the policy. When our policies were called to the floor, they passed almost unanimously. It was a huge victory for our little Chamber!
It was democracy in action. The entire experience was invigorating and I can hardly wait until next year. Kim Darwin, president, Sechelt & District Chamber of Commerce
Arts awards deadlineDon’t miss the opportu-
nity to nominate a worthy applicant or to apply yourself for this year’s Art and Music Awards presented by the Sun-
shine Coast Arts Council. There are three separate
awards in question. The Gillian Lowndes Award
honors the life and talent of Gillian Lowndes, a promising young Coast dancer. Nomi-nees for this award must demonstrate long-standing achievement, innovation and recent growth in their field of artistic endeavor.
The Anne and Philip Klein Visual Arts Award honors the lives of its namesakes who embarked on their artistic pursuits upon retirement. Nominees should be over 65 years of age with a prefer-ence given to those who have developed an artistic passion later in life.
The Louise Baril Memorial Music Award honors an active member of the Coast music scene who was the program director of Countryside Con-certs from 1990 to 1994. The award is intended for Coast music students who are un-dertaking advanced studies.
Application forms along with further information on the awards can be obtained at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa Street or from our website at http://sunshinecoastartscouncil.com/events/awards/.
Deadline for nominations is Nov. 27. Sunshine Coast Arts Council

most dangerous due to home fires. The holiday season is approaching quickly, and with it typically
comes many positive thoughts and memories. But unfortunately, the holiday season is also a time where preventable residential fires are on the rise. Nov. 24 - 30 is National Home Fire Safety Week, and the Canada Safety Council is reminding all Canadians that fire safety should be especially paramount in their minds as part of their holiday planning.
During the holiday season, the fireplace in a home is not only a source of warmth but also a centrepiece for gatherings with fam-ily and friends. Like any home appliance, it should be safe, prop-erly maintained, and good for the environment - inside and out. Ensure the area around the fireplace is free of debris. Debris like holiday decorations and wrapping paper can cause a fire if they are too close to the fireplace.
Fire is often a central element of holiday celebrations, specifi-cally surrounding fireplaces and candles. Open flames can be the catalyst to many problems if not tended to properly. Watch for the following steps you can take to keep celebratory flames from turning on you:• Do not leave open flames, including candles and fireplaces, unattended or smouldering.• Use a screen in front of your fireplace to avoid having sparks or embers flying your way.• Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. Because of the way it is treated, it burns quickly and intensely which could result in a flash fire.• Keep candles away from flammable items such as curtains and trees, and ensure your candles stay on a stable, level surface. • Where possible, use battery-powered candles to avoid the risk of an open flame entirely.
Cooking often accompanies the holiday season as families pre-pare special meals to mark the occasion. Be sure never to leave your cooking unattended, though, as this is the leading cause of kitchen fires. Use a timer to act as a reminder that the oven is on.
Should fire catch, never turn on the overhead fan - it could spread the flames. Immediately call the fire department and leave your home if the fire can't be put out quickly.
Ensure that your home is safe from fire this holiday season by following these tips:• If you're buying a real Christmas tree, be cautioned that dry trees are a fire hazard. Check that the tree is fresh by tapping it on the ground - if needles fall, it's an indicator that the tree is too dry. • For artificial trees, make sure yours is marked as 'fire- resistant' and bears the Canadian Standards Association label. • Trees, artificial or real, should be kept away from heat sources including heat registers, fireplaces and floor heaters.• Metallic tree decorations should be avoided as well, since they could make contact with defective light wiring and become a shock hazard.• When leaving your home - even for a short period of time - be sure to unplug lights.
The Canada Safety Council wishes you a happy, safe and calm holiday season. Submitted

The real estate market has been heating up on the Sun-shine Coast, according to the latest figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Van-couver.
Statistics for the 12 months up to the end of October showed a 25-per-cent in-crease in sales over the same period a year earlier, said Kate McQuaid, of Royal LePage Sus-sex.
“We’re all seeing more sold signs than we’ve seen for a while.”
But as properties are get-ting scooped up, they aren`t currently being replaced at the same rate by others com-ing onto the market.
“One of the things we’re ex-periencing right now is a lack of inventory, between October of this year and October of last year,” McQuaid said. “We’re
down about 36 per cent in the number of detached homes we have—421 homes right now, whereas last year at this time there were 658.
“That (421 homes) sounds like a lot, but that’s includ-ing everything from a mobile home in a park for $50,000 up to a $2-million waterfront. We have a really diverse variety of homes for sale here. It’s been a real challenge to find homes for buyers these days.”
One possible consequence of the lower inventory could be the spike in land prices, which are up a whopping 113 per cent.
“That could be from a lot of people looking for a home and they haven’t been able to find it, so they’ve moved on to buying land and building. So that’s good for housing starts and the construction indus-
Coast property sales and prices going uptry,” said McQuaid.
The figures also showed that along with higher sales are higher prices, with an overall increase of 7.5 per cent. The median price is about $410,000, meaning that half the properties being of-fered for sale are below that point and the other half are above it.
The most active segment of the market right now is in the lower half, McQuaid noted.
“The hottest price range continues to be between $300,000 and $400,000,” she said.
But that’s not to say the higher end isn’t seeing action, too.
“We’ve had more than 30 sales at over $1 million this year, so we’re getting lots of activity,” said McQuaid.

A vision for the future of SSC Properties’ mixed com-mercial and residential devel-opment on East Porpoise Bay is now emerging, following several months of public con-sultation.
SSC principals Mark Sager and Werner Hofstatter re-vealed some of the concepts for the 170-hecatre (420-acre) property during an ap-pearance before Sechelt’s Advisory Planning Commis-sion (APC) Nov. 12, in the first official step in the company’s quest for rezoning approval from the District.
Although SSC is asking for zoning that would allow 1,360 residential units, Sager told the APC that the company foresees just a fraction of that number being built, perhaps as few as 400. The current zoning of the property allows 1,600 units.
Also envisioned over the next 15 to 20 years are an in-ternational secondary school; hotel/resort; artisan-focused live-work area; mixed-use commercial and residential
area; agriculture area; com-munity gardens; waterfront walkway; trail network; parks and open space; eco-educa-tion and adventure centre; and seniors independent, supportive and assisted living units.
“What we are trying to cap-ture on this large parcel of land is really the best of the Sunshine Coast, something that will create an energy and a reason to say, ‘this where we want to live,’” Sager told the commission. “There would be distinctly different neighbour-hoods that capture a variety of different markets.”
Sager said the school could be modelled on two exclusive institutions on Vancouver Is-land, Shawnigan Lake School and Brentwood College School.
He said another neighbour-hood, tentatively called Fox-wood, could look much like the cohousing development in Roberts Creek (where 31 freehold units sit on 20 acres of property legally structured as a “bare-land strata”).
Porpoise Bay development conceptsBut Foxwood could be de-
veloped with smaller, more affordable houses.
“Our goal would be to have homes under $250,000,” said Sager.
Higher-end homes would be built above a proposed zone of small-scale agricul-tural or five-acre pastoral lots.
When asked at the hearing what SSC expects might be de-veloped first, Sager suggested an area dubbed Artisan Place, which is 25, mixed-size live/work where residents, “would be creating home-based prod-ucts for sale in the local mar-ket and globally.”
Another project that could come early in the timeline is a boutique hotel, “a commu-nity focal point.” reminiscent of the Sooke Harbour Hotel on Vancouver Island or the Hotel Eldorado in Kelowna, Sager said.
SSC has scheduled a public meeting at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt from 6-8 pm Nov. 24 to hear comments on the cur-rent development proposals.

I was honoured to repre-sent our community on No-vember 11 and lay a wreath of remembrance on behalf of the District of Sechelt. The importance of respect for ser-vice and of community mem-ory – Lest We Forget/ We will remember them – have been uppermost in my mind in re-cent days. Heartfelt thanks to President Kay Metcalfe and the membership of Royal Ca-nadian Legion Branch #140 for organizing Remembrance Day ceremonies in Sechelt. Thanks also to Principal Mar-shall, the staff and students of Kinnikinnick Elementary for including Council in your ob-servances on November 10. These public demonstrations of respect for the sacrifices of those who have gone before us are essential to maintain-ing the community we value.
In our 2016 budget, Coun-cil is looking to address a very different but also very impor-tant need to show respect to
our residents and our com-munity. Over 90 per cent of Sechelt’s annual tax revenue is funded from residential property. Through Council decisions on the 2016 Budget, we are making plans to spend the money we collect from citizens and residents. We believe that what you want in return for your tax dollars is community infrastructure that works well. Roads that are safe and driveable; drain-age systems that address water issues; sidewalks, path-ways, trails, bike paths and scooter lanes located where they are needed. These types of services are the backbone of why local government ex-ists and why property taxes are paid.
Much of Sechelt’s basic infrastructure is in need of repair or expansion to meet demands. While new devel-opment does pay for infra-structure in the area where the growth is happening, an expanding population also means more vehicles on ex-isting roads. It means more people accessing our parks and visiting our Library, more demands for pedestrian routes to connect neighbour-hoods and more calls for Dis-
trict services, be those bylaw enforcement, records, or de-velopment planning.
This is not to say that programing in the ‘softer’ service areas, such as com-munity grants, arts and cul-ture or communications will be ignored in the com-ing year. It does mean that the 2016 budget will look at things that need to be done in Sechelt to maintain and deliver core services. To help us focus our work plans we invite residents to attend an E-town Hall on the subject of our draft 2016 budget on Monday, Dec. 7, at 7pm. The meeting will be held in the Community Meeting Room and will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel.
The draft budget will be available online and at the District Office in advance of the meeting. Council and staff look forward to the op-portunity to make a coopera-tive financial plan for 2016, which will be our 30th An-niversary as a District and 50 years since incorporation as a Village. We are well into middle age – a time to put our financial house in order and ensure we are prepared for the decades to come.

This fall, staff will be sub-mitting work plans for the 2016 budget. These budget submissions must conform to the strategic plan now in place. Staff and directors are gratified to have received many compliments from con-stituents on the strategic plan and its focus on mandated SCRD services.
Currently, the SCRD staff and board are working on implementing several aspects of the plan. For example, staff and directors are establish-ing improved communica-tion with both the Sechelt (Shíshálh) and Squamish (Skwxwu7mesh) Nations at all levels in each organization. Directors recently met with the Squamish Nation at their council chambers in North Vancouver to discuss a proto-col agreement and other com-
mon issues on the Sunshine Coast. The major focus was on the resource industry activi-ties in the Howe Sound area. There will be an official sign-ing of the protocol with the Squamish Nation on the Sun-shine Coast in February 2016.
Following the strategic plan, staff is also working on asset management in order to give the board direction on main-taining facilities and infra-structure to a level that is safe and secure for the community. Meanwhile, members of the SCRD board are initiating a re-gional economic development program. A steering commit-tee has the task of reviewing the funding model, which a committee of volunteers will follow as part of running the program. The steering com-mittee is also responsible for recruiting volunteers from the community and will be sub-mitting pertinent information to the local media. It is not yet clear which areas of economic development the volunteer committee will handle, but support of small business and marketing the Sunshine Coast
are likely to be priorities. The strategic plan also
calls for streamlining of SCRD meetings, and staff and direc-tors are analyzing current procedures with a view to increasing their efficiency. The board and staff are addi-tionally checking the terms of reference of advisory groups to ensure clarity of direction and focus so that time put in by volunteers is as effective as possible.
During October the board approved recommendations for immediate improvements to SCRD water infrastructure. The aim is never to have an-other summer like that of 2015, with the imposition of stage four water restrictions for parts of the Coast.
Please contact me at 604-741-2427 or e-mail me at [email protected] if you wish to discuss SCRD pro-grams or plans. I will meet you at the Welcome Woods market, Halfmoon Bay store, or the SCRD Field Road office; please contact me to make an appointment.

The Board of Education (SD 46) has approved Monday, Jan. 4, 2016 (the day after winter break) and Tuesday, March 29, 2016 (the day after the two-week Spring Break and Easter Monday) as non-instructional days. Students will not attend school on those days.
These two non-instruction-
al days will support our dis-trict’s teachers as they learn the new curriculum, and re-sult from the reduction - by the Ministry of Education - of instructional time by 10 hours.
Also, the school district pre-sented a high priority request for a boiler plant replacement at Madeira Park Elementary

By removing the existing propane boiler, the facility will see a carbon footprint reduc-tion of 85 per cent by reducing its emissions from 26.9 tonnes of CO2 (tCO2e) to 4.1 tCO2e annually. Submitted

St. Hilda’s Anglican Church is hosting a public lecture on Monday, Nov. 23 at 7pm on “An Inter-spiritual Christianity.”
In a globalized world with easy access to all the great faith traditions we are enter-ing an “inter-spiritual age”. How does this impact the Christian faith? In what ways
can Christianity come of age as a vital contemplative wis-dom path for the 21st century, drawing on the wisdom of oth-er faith traditions? Does this mean knowing more or know-ing deeper? Is the institutional church becoming obsolete?
These and other questions will be addressed by the Rev. Matthew Wright, a writer, re-treat leader and past present-er at the annual Science and Non-Duality Conferences in California. At the age of 30 he is rapidly emerging as a lead-ing light in the field of inter-spirituality.
Admission by donation ($10 to $15 suggested). Free for all full-time students.

To mark this year’s RBC Sports Day in Canada — a national celebration of sport — the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is hosting an “RBC Sports Day on the Coast” open house on Sat., Nov. 21.
With funding from the RBC Sports Day in Canada grant, the SCRD is host-ing an open house at the Gibsons and Area Com-munity Centre on Nov. 21 from 10 am to 2 pm. Local sports organizations will be presenting and pro-viding information about their programs, as well as opportunities to try vari-ous sports. Following the open house there will be a free public skate.
“Sport participation is on the decline in Canada, particularly among youth aged 15 to 18,” says Adri-anne Gadd, SCRD Recre-ation Program Coordina-tor. “Celebrations such as RBC Sports Day in Canada are a great way for indi-viduals to get moving and they act as a great remind-er to participate in sport on a daily basis.”
Schedules and addi-tional information are available at www.scrd.ca/SCRD-Recreation.

Harbour Air Seaplanes is pleased to announce a stra-tegic investment into Salt Spring Air that will see ex-pansion of air service and passenger capacity between Salt Spring Island, Vancouver and other key BC destina-tions.
Both Salt Spring Air and Harbour Air have worked together for the last four years to ensure a scheduled service that leads the indus-try in safety and reliability. Beginning Dec. 1, the next stage of Harbour Air’s invest-ment in Salt Spring Air builds
on this partnership, allowing for more flights and more aircraft to service Salt Spring Island, its residents and visi-tors.
Salt Spring Air and Har-bour Air will continue to lead the airline industry in sustainability. All airline op-erations will be carbon neu-tral, through the continued purchase of carbon offsets to balance all greenhouse gas emissions. The airlines will also continue to work with local communities and the Vancouver Aquarium to res-cue marine wildlife. Submitted

Connect. That’s one thing that we aim to do here at the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives. By collecting and exhibiting items related to local history, we want to connect you with this place you call home, and with the stories and people who went before us. Now, through our Adopt an Artifact fundraising campaign, you have a unique opportunity to connect with a specific artifact, one that may have special meaning to you, a family member or friend. We have hand-picked over 30 unique, priceless and intrigu-ing Museum artifacts and made them available to adopt for varying donation levels (these levels do not infer the actual value of the artifact). For each level, you will be acknowledged with a variety of rewards — from a unique adoption certificate with a photograph of the artifact, to a behind the scenes “meet and greet” with the Curator and your chosen object. The artifact you choose to adopt will remain at the museum for continued preservation, while your donation will help fund the museum’s accessibil-
ity renovations. These renova-tions will include the creation of a wheelchair-accessible, family-friendly washroom, and the installation of a plat-form lift to the second floor.
What might you adopt? From the Beachcombers television show, Relic’s toque is up for adoption, as well as his iconic plaid jacket. Both items were worn by Robert Clothier during the filming of many classic Beachcomb-ers episodes. For a child (or the child-at-heart), there is the High-flying Acrobatic
Monkey, a tin toy from the 1940s. With a turn of the key, a wind-up motor propels the acrobatic monkey through the air in flips and summer-saults. For the writer in the family, there’s the Underwood typewriter which was owned by the Howe Sound Woman’s Institute who built the Heri-tage Playhouse. Perhaps one of the most personal items to adopt is George Gibsons’ walking cane, an amazing artifact from our collection considering that the cane was hand carved, likely by Gibsons

of the artifacts available for adoption by following the Adopt an Artifact link on the Museum website. There you will find a list of the great re-wards for each level of adop-tion. Thursday, Nov. 19 sees the launch of two new works by local Sunshine Coast writers John Pass and Joe Denham. John Pass reads from his new book, Forecast: Selected Poems 1970 – 1990, a collec-tion of early and out of print works, published by Harbour Publishing. “I’m delighted to see these out of print poems live and breathe again, ”en-thuses Pass. Pass has been crafting poetry for 40 years, written 16 books of poetry, and has won numerous awards for his work, includ-ing the Governor General’s Award for Poetry in 2006 for Stumbling in the Bloom. “Poet-ry becomes a way of thinking inseparable from my sense of self," says Pass. “If I don’t write I lose track of my most thoughtful, most empathetic and most interesting self.”
Pass lives near Sakinaw Lake where he still writes poetry and runs High Ground Press, a publisher of let-terpress editions of poetry broadsheets. “No money in it to speak of,” says Pass of be-ing a poet. “But great pleasure in the discipline and delights of the genre, and lots of good company. I knew from the be-ginning a day job would be an essential adjunct to writing.” So why write poetry at all? “It’s the world’s best voice,” he claims.
Joe Denham, who lives in Halfmoon Bay with his wife and two children, will be launching his new work, Regeneration Machine, pub-lished by Nightwood Editions. The author of two previous books of poetry, Flux and Windstorm, Denham's poetry has been described by Quill & Quire as "complex enough to mirror the contradictions and ambivalences of life.” John Pass and Joe Denham read from their new works at 7pm at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.
On Saturday, Nov. 21 from 1-4pm, Friends of the Sech-elt Public Library are hosting an event to commemorate
the 30th anniversary of L.R. Wright’s publication of her first novel, The Suspect. The Suspect won the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America, making Wright the first Canadian to win an Edgar. Her mystery novels put Sechelt on the crime map, at least fictionally,
John Pass, above, reads with Joe Denham Thur. Nov 19 at 7pm at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. On Sat. Nov 21 from 1-4pm an event commemorating the publication of L.R. Wright’s The Suspect takes place at the Sechelt Public Library. KEITH SHAW PHOTO
and featured dedicated RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg and local librarian Cassandra Mitchell. Wright wrote nine Alberg mysteries, all highly rated, creating a devoted fan following in the process. There will be a cake at the li-brary, a raffle of a Wright book set, and a special mystery to solve. All are welcome.
Gibsons writer Mark Cam-eron gave up the conventional life for one of exploration. He left his software start-up and loaded his family into a camp-er van to lead a simpler life—a life that led him on a journey across the United States, and eventually to Ecuador.
Now, in his debut novel, Goodnight Sunshine, Camer-on taps into that experience
as he speculates on what could happen if a solution to the world’s energy needs fell into the right—or wrong—pocket.
Goodnight Sunshine is scheduled to be released on Nov. 26. Cameron will be reading from his novel at the Gibsons Public Library on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2pm.

Horoscope
Michael O’ConnorAstrologer
Tip of the Week:The big news now is the
fact that the Lunar Nodes have entered Virgo and Pi-sces where they will remain for the next 18 months. This ingress occurred on Novem-ber 12. Although subtle at first, the influence of this cycle becomes increasing apparent even a couple of weeks in and sometimes right away. The transit of the Moon’s Nodes is a strong indicator of where and how we will each learn impor-tant lessons for our spiri-tual evolutionary growth.
The North Node in Virgo indicates a basic theme of focusing to make the dream a reality so that it becomes manifest, tangible and real-istic. That one person’s or group’s success or dream can prove to be another’s loss or nightmare repre-sents the eternal complex-ity of life. The South Node in Pisces indicates dreams and ideals which otherwise remain eternally on a wish list. But Virgo is an Earth element sign and moves us to take deliberate, measur-able and concrete action. The terrorist action that occurred on November 13 in France may be cited as an example of this shift and collective turn of the karmic dial.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury, Chiron and Vesta. Each of these ‘planets’ (Chiron is considered a minor planet or planetoid and Vesta is an asteroid) will play key roles over the next year and a half both in our Birth Charts and by transit.
The Sun enters Sagit-tarius on Nov 22 at 7:25 am PST. I will shed more light on this ingress next week.Aries (Mar 21–Apr 20)
The transit of the lunar nodes over the next 18 months for you implies a re-assertion of your dedication to service. The sooner you can acknowledge this and
adjust your attitude as nec-essary the better. Otherwise you could steadily slip into denial, disillusionment and deep depression. You will be progressively pushed out of any excessive orientations to yourself at the expense of giving more selflessly.Taurus (Apr 20–May 21)
An awakening of passion and joy to co-create your world according to your dreams, ideals and destiny, yet also woven with a deep sense of service, has begun. Cultivating a more defined and refined sense of leader-ship is implied. Rebellious attitudes or casual activities unsupported by a mean-ingful cause are the danger signs to watch for. Create a beautiful and balanced ap-proach to bring your gifts to the world.Gemini (May 21–Jun 21)
Setting your focus to a new level of service has begun. Excessive status quo expectations will be pushed aside. The deeper needs of your soul even at the expense of social gain and profit require your at-tention. Directing your fo-cus in service to others, perhaps especially to family members, to a new level is implied. Balance the drive for worldly ambition with unconditional love.Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22)
Translating your higher ideals, ethics and principles into modes of communica-tion that can be received and understood by others is a core theme with the North Node in Virgo. Discernment regarding what is fantasy or unrealistic notions of truth, justice and proper conduct will come into focus. This is a call to ‘walk the talk’ of your deeper convictions and higher aspirations of civility.Leo (Jul 22–Aug 23)
With the North Node in Virgo your destined task in-cludes acknowledging what you have and can do with it. Whether it is talents, time,
resources and so on…, the time has come to share your gifts, opportunities and abilities with the world. You can look to others for inspi-ration yet it is up to you to share who you are and what you have as fully as you can and thereby realize the true meaning of abundance.Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22)
The Moon’s North Node transiting through your sign for the next year and a half marks a time period dur-ing which you are destined to become more assertive and decisive. While this will include paying atten-tion to the details, you may have to overcome unloving and self-centered attitudes. Overcoming tendencies to lean on others or try to be all things to all people is the flip side.Libra (Sep 22–Oct 22)
One of your main les-sons with this new lunar node cycle is to see through and beyond appearances, your own and those of oth-ers. This implies dissolving mental and emotional pat-terns and modes of percep-tion which you have devel-oped over the years for the sake of security. Cultivating your imagination and in-tuition to counter-balance logic and facts is featured.Scorpio (Oct 22–Nov 21)
The North Node in Vir-go will activate a process of striking a balance be-tween being personal and impersonal. This includes engaging with others as one among equals, neither standing above or below any other. Seeing through and beyond status and hier-archy and simply recogniz-ing individuality in people will be a central theme. This may also manifest as ren-dering selfless service to higher ideals.Sagittarius (Nov 21–Dec 21)
Learning to assume posi-tions of authority and re-sponsibility in new ways is a central theme for you with the North Node in Virgo.

This is a summons to real-ize new levels of maturity. Conducting yourself with integrity and respect for the genuine needs of others constitutes an important test. As well, cultivating a deep sense of loyalty to col-lective causes will enter the spotlight.Capricorn (Dec 21–Jan 19)
Making key commitments and living up to them will prove important for you with the North Node in Vir-go. Devotion to higher ideals and what constitutes your higher mind is featured. You are destined to see a much bigger picture and the implications of decisions and trends made in the present spanning far into the future. Guided by solid and enduring principles and ethics will become your motto.Aquarius (Jan 19–Feb 19)
Incorporating deep and dynamic levels of change into your life will emerge as an important theme over the coming 18 months. You could even feel the need to ‘let go and let God’. Honor-ing the notion that change is the law and that adhering to it requires maintaining a firm point of center within your own being could prove pivotal.
