Imagination: What it means and how to use itTo have an imagination means to be able to form new images that are not observed through the senses (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching). Simply put, it’s the ability to imagine things that aren’t actually there. Mary Poppins asks Jane and Michael to use their imaginations, and here are some ways that you can too!

1. CHALK IT UP! Grab your sidewalk chalk, and draw a zoo with animals of your own choosing (whether dragons, or furry frogs, or 10-foot earthworms). Imagine that you are the zookeeper. What sounds do your animals make? What do they feel like? What does your zoo smell like? (Ick!)

2. TAKE OFF!Can you fly? Of course you can, if you use your imagination. Grab an umbrella, hold it up high, and pretend that you’re flying above your front yard. What do you see? Can you see the neighbor’s roof? How high can you go? Watch out for aircraft...

3. THE BIRD SAYS WHAT? Do you have birds around your house or local park that you can feed? Ask a parent or adult for some bird food, toss some out, and imagine what the birds are saying about the treat you’ve given them. Do they like it? Are they saying that it needs salt, or that it’s overcooked a little? If the birds fed you, what would they give you (besides gooey chewed-up worms)? Ewww!

4. PROBLEM SOLVED. Mary Poppins tells Jane and Michael that “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” If you have a task or chore that seems unpleasant, can you imagine that you hear music? Or perhaps you have giant, make-believe friends that can help you with your chore, which will make the time pass quickly. Pretend that you smell chocolate-chip cookies while you’re working. Heck, try it right now...

5. SAY WHAT? SupercalifragiliSticexpialidociouS is a made-up word. Can you make up words too? Gather some friends, use your imaginations, and see who can come up with the longest word that sounds like it still means something. For extra fun, have another friend make up a definition. If you have access to a computer, look up your word and see if it really exists. You might be surprised.

The story of Mary Poppins is set in England in the early 1900’s. Though it was nearly 100 years ago, many of the lessons from the Banks family still apply today.

• Mr Banks is torn between wanting to be a good father and spending time in his office to support his family. Do you know of any adults in the same situation? Is there a way to have both a good job and a good family life?

• The chimney sweepBert is very good at stopping whatever he is doing to help Mary Poppins with the children. Do you know of anyone who goes out of their way to help someone else? If you do, just tell that person “Thanks” sometime. They will appreciate it.

• The Banks family comes to realize that the real treasure in life is not in money or social events, but in the happiness and blessings that they already have in their children and family. Can you recognize situations or people that make you feel happier?

• Mary Poppins literally drops from the sky, seemingly in answer to Jane and Michael’s request. Are there occasions or people that show up in your life that you didn’t expect? Do you see them as helpful or not?

Things we can learn from Mary Poppins...

Find the Kite MazeMichael has lost his kite. Can you help him find it among the many rooftops? (Solution on page 10.)
