ABOUT THE EvENT

Now in its 4th year, Hydropower Africa is still the largest hydropower conference and exhibition of its kind in Africa, boasting a full three day conference & over 450 delegates from across the continent. It exploits prospects for hydropower development in Africa, encourages investment in hydropower projects and identifies and overcomes challenges for hydropower development in rural and urban areas.

The conference programme consists of two streams:

1. Small, Mini and Micro Hydro – Sustainable solutions in increasing energy access to Africa’s rural communities• Gain insight on the commercial potential for the development of grid-connected and off-grid

small hydro schemes• Learn from international best practice case examples on how to get more from urban wastewater

systems and how they can be applied in Africa • Learn how to develop small hydropower schemes from scratch, including site selection, feasibility

evaluation, tariff design and funding

2. Macro Hydro – Ensuring energy security through Africa’s abundant hydropower resources• Learn from senior utility representatives about investment prospects for generation projects in

Africa• Hear more about project finance from both a financial institution and developer’s perspective • Understand sustainable best practices for hydropower project assessment, preparation,

Thursday – Friday22 – 23 September 2011

First FallsFirst Falls is a run-of-river hydroelectric scheme situated at the base of a 14.2m concrete wall, constructed on a natural waterfall. It consists of two 3MW horizontal units with provision for a further two units of similar size. Stator cooling to allow synchronous condenser (SCO) mode of operation was fitted recently to increase the reactive power compensation availability in that area of supply. A penstock, 2.7m in diameter and 28m in length, links the weir to the station. Water is discharged from the units back into the Mtata River which then moves downstream to Second Falls.

Second FallsLike First Falls, Second Falls is also a run-of-river station. The station itself is situated at the base of a natural waterfall with the 9m high wall built on the top of the waterfall. Two 5.5MW horizontal units with a provision for a further two units of similar size, are installed. A penstock, 3.5m in diameter and 44m in length, links the weir to the station. Water is discharged from the units back into the Mtata River which then moves downstream to the mouth of the Mtata River. This is one of the most advanced hydro stations in South Africa.

Mbashe HydroMbashe is unique if compared to conventional setups. To create the required head of water for generation, the station was built about 30km further downstream. A combination concrete/steel tunnel, 4.5m in diameter and 1400m in length links the Mbashe weir to the hydro station at a gradient of 1:8.3. Three 14MW units are installed with provision for a fourth. No SCO mode of operation is possible as the discharge is below river level and water thus stays in contact with the turbine. The draft tube is also not angled steeply enough to allow air to be injected to force the water away.

Kafue Gorge Power Station

This is the largest power station in Zambia. It is located on the Kafue River and its construction was completed in 1972. The length of the main river is about 1,550km and the drop over the entire length is about 1,000m. Of this drop 600m is within the Kafue Gorge (over 28km). The station has an installed capacity of 900MW with 6 generators of 150MW each. Two machines feed one transformer consisting of three single-phase units. There are therefore ten single-phase units including the spare unit. The main reservoirs for Kariba North and Kafue Gorge power stations are Kariba Dam and Itezhi-Tezhi Dam on the Zambezi and Kafue rivers respectively. Kariba Dam has long term storage capacity.

Kariba North Bank Power Station

The station is located on the north bank of Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River. At the existing Kariba North Bank hydropower station, the installed capacity of three (out of four) turbines have been upgraded to 180MW, up from the previous 150MW. The fourth turbine, which would also be upgraded to 180MW, was expected to be on line by March 2011. The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has provided ZESCO with a $105- million loan facility to co-finance the expansion of its Kariba North Bank hydropower station. The 360MW hydropower station, being developed as an extension to the existing 720MW Kariba North Bank power station, on the Zambezi river, will cost an overall $430-million and is expected to be completed in November 2012.

Inga hydropower scheme, DRCThe Inga hydropower project has been discussed for a long time. First studies were done in the 60s. Site development studies recommended the construction of four hydroelectric power stations in two phases. The first phase concerned the construction of three power stations in the Nkokolo valley, namely Inga I (351MW, commissioned in 1972), Inga II (1,424MW, commissioned in 1982) and Inga 3 (about 3,500MW, currently in the project design phase). HV lines transmit the generated power to Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville). Apart from the two existing sites and the one currently under development, the total potential of the Grand Inga project amounts to about 39,000MW.
