Earlier this year, I was in meetings at different branches where words were given encouraging us to be engaged in Spiritual Warfare. For many of us, the most visible sign of the Spiritual Warfare is the Prayerwatch. Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. As Christians, we cannot avoid the reality that we are in a Spiritual Battle, good vs. evil. Whilst praying prayers of Spiritual Warfare can be a difficult thing for us, it is an important part of our Christian life. At a gathering recently, Helen Elliott shared about an experience she felt that was of a spiritual nature. She had been newly baptised in the Spirit and was getting ready to go on a Christian Women’s weekend. On a Friday night just before leaving, there was a fire in her kitchen. (I guess the sceptics could say it was purely an accident but if we looked at the likelihood of this occurring I suspect it would be highly unlikely for a specific day… I doubt the Elliott’s have had many fires in their kitchen over their lifetime.) The fire was quickly put out, and she left for the weekend once the home situation was sorted. During the weekend she had a powerful experience of God, one that has been very helpful for her ongoing Christian life.

REFLECTIONS - Don’t Miss Seeing The Invisible?

During the weekend she had a powerful experience of God,

one that has been very helpful for her ongoing Christian life.

Interestingly, the Bible notes that this should not seem an amazing experience to us. In the parable of the sower, Jesus says in Luke 8:11,12 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones on the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.” Paul runs into a situation such as this preaching to the Sergius Paulus in Acts 13. In your own life, have you had an experience like that of Helen’s? One of the areas we pray for in our Prayerwatch is against Confusion. Our life is built on relationships and confusion can be quite damaging. The area of confusion particularly around what someone said and meant, or what their intentions were by doing something. Sometimes I can be stirred up by what I thought someone said and when it is clarified (often later) I am left wondering why I agonised over that thing. I have found a couple of helpful things in this area. Dealing with the thoughts, disciplining them and thinking positively regarding the intentions of the other person/s. I found a comment recently that helped me was: our brothers and sisters do love us and do not want to cause hurt or offence to us. Normally it is an unwitting word or action (or lack of) or a misunderstanding that has occurred. Secondly, the Bible talks about getting things into the light; evil does not like light. Find out from the person about what they said or did, try and clear up any misunderstanding. Do pray against the works of darkness in the situation. Jesus calls Satan a liar and the Father of lies. We do not know when the enemy is working in these relationship matters. Our Spiritual Warfare needs to be both a part of our daily prayer and our participation on the Prayerwatch. It is important for evangelism, our life together and the other needs we raise up on the watch. Let us not flag in zeal for this area, Hebrews 12 gives encouragement that relates the Easter events; “And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” God bless, Mark C NB There are some interesting books on Spiritual Warfare drop me a line if you have an interest to know some more.

MARK CHALLIES AND TOM CABALLES VISIT TO MELBOURNE 24 to 26 February saw Mark Challies and Tom Caballes visit the Melbourne community called the Families for Christ [FFC]. The FFC is looking at becoming part of the Sword of the Spirit [SOS]. The Asian region is responsible for helping the communities to full membership within the SOS and is discussing with the Lamb of God how we as a Full Member Community may be able to assist.

Part of the discussion involved linking with the Melbourne community’s youth also the community in Sydney called God’s Light. Some of our Kairos folk have met these young people before as they have visited us for Summer Oasis and BLAST.

“LINGKOD” LEADER VISITS NEW ZEALAND

The last week of February saw Mon Samson, the leader of “Lingkod ng Panginoon” [Servant of the Lord] singles group from Manila, visit Wellington and Auckland to help us in our work with the singles in the Lamb of God. Mon has been leading Lingkod for around 25 years already. Lingkod has been in existence for more than 30 years and has around 33 branches in the Philippines with an estimated membership of around 1,000 singles. It started working

internationally as well with some singles in Dubai and Singapore. Some Lamb of God members like Jaison and Ludeth Mariposa, Julie Humphries, Howell and Sheen Tungol, and Tom and Mhel Caballes had been involved with Lingkod in its earlier days. During last year’s International Coordinators’ Meeting and Kairos International meeting in Chelsea, Michigan, the Sword of the Spirit President, Jean Barbara, wanted Lingkod to expand its network to other Sword of the Spirit communities worldwide. Jean exhorted us to learn from Lingkod’s experience and wisdom in forming single men and women to become radical disciples of Jesus Christ and bring the gospel to others. The Lamb of God is blessed to be one of the groups that Mon has visited. The feedback on Mon’s visit is that he has been very helpful to both our Auckland and Wellington branches. We are looking at how we can best link with Lingkod in the future.

THE LAST BLAST IS COMING… The annual Wellington youth weekend camp called BLAST [Believe, Live and Share the Truth] will be held in Silverstream Retreat Centre in Lower Hutt from 28 to 30 April. Camp fee is $110. The theme for the Weekend is: Standing Ground, Taking Ground and the main Scripture for the weekend is: See I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land... (Deuteronomy 1:8). The Kairos New Zealand Service Team [KNZST] recently met and decided, based on circumstances, that this will be the last BLAST to be held. Come and be part of it!

AUCKLAND BRANCH NEWS

The UCO Orientation Week at University of Auckland

During the first week of March, the University of Auckland had its Orientation Week. This was a great opportunity for the university students to engage with the many clubs on campus, and also for the clubs to promote what they had to offer to the students. As University Christian Outreach (UCO) is a fairly recent club on campus, having a stall set up allowed us to gain a presence on campus, which lead to new members who joined our Club. This response would not be possible without the help of some

amazing volunteers from the Lamb of God, who provided us with delicious baked treats to offer at our stall during the week. It also made promoting UCO a lot easier for us. It was a great experience outreaching alongside my fellow UCO-ers. Orientation week concluded with our first UCO meeting of the year, at which we organised pizza, drinks and some fun games for the newcomers. We ask for your continued prayers for UCO to have a successful year.

Golden Jubilee of Catholic Charismatic Renewal Mass

Most of the Auckland Branch members attended the Golden Jubilee Mass of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal on February 25th at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the City. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Patrick Dunn. Our Branch members assisted with the music for the Praise & Worship and the Mass. Maryanne Hall recounts her experience of the Charismatic Renewal:

In early 1973, my classmate at St Benedict’s Girl’s College in Auckland told me her mother was attending prayer meetings at St Pat’s Cathedral in Auckland and that at the next meeting her mother was going to speak in tongues. When I found out that anyone could attend these meetings, I went along to hear this hitherto unusual phenomenon. I was disappointed because all those attending the Life in the Spirit Seminars, went off to other venues for their sessions and newcomers remained in the Cathedral. I enjoyed the praise and worship. Afterwards, a Franciscan brother (Br Ray Parsons) came up to me and said that he was going to pray for me that week. I told him he didn’t need to as I wasn’t one of ‘them.’ He then said he’d look out for me the following Monday night, but I had decided I was not going back.

Well, the Holy Spirit moved in my heart during that week, and some nights I lay in bed crying, and I did not know why. It was like a hardness of heart was being removed from me as I had not shed a tear for many years over anything…And I went back to

the Cathedral the following Monday night and enrolled in the seminar.

So many people had been coming to these meetings that there was a different venue for each week of the Life in the Spirit seminar. Any room that could be found to squash people into was utilised. The Cathedral’s sacristy, anterooms, upstairs and down at Liston house, the presbytery and also nearby businesses such as the Air New Zealand building. And newcomers came to the main prayer meeting in the cathedral until they enrolled in a seminar. The presence of God was real and tangible. The excitement amongst the people gathered was evident on their happy faces and loving hearts. It was wonderful to know God in this new and remarkable way and to see the power manifested in so many spiritual gifts.

I was in awe of the music team, and I loved singing every new song I heard there. They learned charismatic songs from the St Paul’s (Anglican) Singers who later released LP’s of worship music. Zoe McCarthy and Mary Pound were two sopranos, in particular, I recall who sang like angels with the most beautiful harmonies.

In that first LISS, I received a gift of genuine love for others. Then I enrolled to repeat the seminar again. There was a shortage of available small group leaders so from that second seminar; I was assigned a group to lead. I was amazed that adults didn’t baulk at that at all and accepted a school kid as leader of their group. I recall Jackie Abraham being in a

6

small group I lead and at a later stage Sister Alice Hardiman being in my group for her first LISS.

Then there was a shortage of teachers for these seminars, and I attended a few short training sessions led by Ernie Milne and started to teach on Forgiveness and Reconciliation. This was in the days Ernie lived in a ‘poncho’ (his signature garment) before he entered the Rosminians – first as a brother; then as a priest. Other Rosminians figured significantly in my life – Fr John Moss and Fr Bill Harwood. The latter praying over me for the gift of tongues at a charismatic retreat at St Paul’s College.

I eagerly attended the Charismatic Summer Schools in Palmerston North put on by Christian Advance Ministries. I still have my folder from the one in 1974. In 1975 I was married, and Greg and I attended the Pakuranga Prayer Group as by that time the renewal in Auckland had first split into regions and then into parishes. We met in the home of Mavis Skinner. I really missed the awesomeness of the enormous inner-city gatherings; the volume of the praise and worship taking the roof off the cathedral, the variety of gifts evident – prophecies in tongues (both sung and spoken) with interpretations of, prophetic utterances, wonderful revelations and healings.

In 1976 there was a new move of the Holy Spirit in the form of building a sense of community in parishes. We joined the first group formed in St Mark’s Pakuranga. It heralded from Spain and was called the Better World Movement. It was our first taste of Christian Community.

From 1977 to 1979 Greg and I lived in Dargaville where I was posted for my country service teaching. There was no charismatic prayer group there, so we ran the local parish youth group instead. At the end of 1978, I was able to attend the Charismatic Summer School where Francis McNutt was the main speaker, taking with me a member of the local youth group – David Passell. That was a life-changing experience for him. On our return to Auckland for 1979, our first son Danjel was born, and we resumed our belonging to the Better World Group of which I was a member for eleven years while overlapping with our involvement in covenant community…

In 1982 Roger Foley from the Lamb of God Community in Christchurch and John Carroll of the Brisbane Emmanuel covenant community came and gave a talk in the Hillsborough Parish Hall of St John Vianney. Our whole Better World Group attended this. It really struck a chord deeply with Greg and I. Here was another move of the Holy Spirit - a form of Christian Community that was a Way of Life. - A daily belonging with a Life Commitment. It was more of what we had wanted for the life of our family. We found that the LISS was

7

an initial introduction to a whole series of courses on Living the New Life in God’s Spirit. They were the lead-in to the formation of Covenant Communities.

At the end of 1983 a team from the Community in Brisbane, the Gamblings, and John and Penny Carroll, ran a live-in retreat and Greg and I attended this. We met people from Auckland who were forming these covenant communities. Early 1984, after the birth of our third son, we joined, and from then there’s been no looking back. Greg and I have had tremendous blessings over the past 33 years of living in committed relationships with our brothers and sisters in Covenant Community. We have had many joys shared and many sorrows supported. Covenant Community is not the only move of the Holy Spirit in the Charismatic Renewal, but for us, through service and commitment, it has borne the most fruit.

THE COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY GROUP – UPDATE

The Lamb of God community Bible study group is halfway through a twelve-week course on “The Old Testament in Light of the New Testament.” Steve Clark, the previous President of the Sword of the Spirit, developed the talks and are made available for SOS communities in MP3 format.

The Bible study has been initiated with the arrival of our visitor from Costa Rica, Bea Vargas, who is currently in Auckland. She, together with four other members of the community, has been spending around two to four hours a week listening, studying, and doing assignments online for the past six weeks. It has been a challenge for the group to be faithful in studying and submitting assignments, but it has been very rewarding. The group has so far covered the following topics: The Creation, Paradise Lost, Questions of Interpretation, Noah and the Flood, Stages of God’s Plan, and Abraham. Well done, team!

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes

Dead Weight - April 2017

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight,

and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us… [Hebrews 12:1 ESV]

In training, we see runners putting on extra weights on their bodies so they can develop more strength and endurance. But during a race, runners run with the least amount of weight in their bodies. Why? Anything extra they carry around will make their run more difficult. They will be carrying unneeded, and in fact, burdensome, dead weight. In the Bible, the path to discipleship is often compared to a long-distance race: a marathon. As we begin our walk with God, we start getting rid of some of those dead weights; and as we move along, we continue to unload some more. But along the way, we may also pick up things that make our journey more troublesome and slow us down. Ideally, we should be running with almost nothing, so our race, which is very challenging in itself, will become a bit easier. How about you – how much dead weight do you carry around in your spiritual journey? Wouldn’t you prefer to run towards heaven with a lesser dead weight? So How Do You Carry Lesser Dead Weight in Your Spiritual Race? 1. You are a new creation in Christ [2 Corinthians 5:17], and you received the Holy Spirit. But you need to know that you are a sinner until the day you die and that you need to repent of your sins before God continually. Sin clings to you so easily, but God’s love and mercy never fail. Develop a habit of examining your conscience daily and admitting your sins to God, who opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. [James 4:6] 2. You need to examine your ‘spiritual backpack’ and see what things are you carrying around but are not needed. What attachments do you have in life? What personal ambitions and plans do you have that you have not surrendered to God yet you keep on chasing them? Do you aim to please people first, rather than God? 3. One thing that can truly bog you down in your spiritual race is a lack of forgiveness – and it can come in the form of anger, resentments, grudges and bitterness. You need to examine your life and acknowledge these things in your life, and then learn to forgive and let go. It is very difficult to do, but for your sake, you need to do it. This dead weight can literally cause you to stop the race – or get disqualified from it. 4. What emotional baggage do you carry with you? Are you walking with self-doubt, anxiety, stress, fear, or other similar emotions? You need to deal with those emotions so you can be free to walk with and serve God. 5. Learn to live with less spiritual ‘complications.’ Be faithful to the roles God has given you. Be committed to your daily prayer and scripture. It is a spiritual marathon, not a sprint. Have spiritual blinders so that you can be single-hearted and simple-hearted in your walk with God. You should be ready for a very long race, although you cannot know exactly when your finish line will be. Patience, long-suffering and endurance are vital character traits you need to have. Have peace in yourself, and develop a grateful disposition in life. 6. Keep your eye and focus on the finish line. After all, this is your life hidden with God. See Colossians 3: 1-4. OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled. [Hebrews 12:15 ESV] 2. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. [Colossians 3:1-4 ESV] 3. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 3:13-14 ESV] 4. Other References: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 2 Timothy 4:7-8; and 1 John 1:9. FOR REFLECTION OR SHARING: What spiritual baggage do you carry around? What prevents you from getting rid of them?

PRAYERWATCH SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISE Fight the good fight. Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry out his purpose, Jeremiah 51: 12 NIV SOLDIERS OF CHRIST – PRAYER FOR EVANGELIZATION A year ago the Prayerwatch Discernment team was challenged to look at a prayer for evangelization in New Zealand which it accepted was needed. After some changes and use in our own Prayerwatch time the prayer was sent to the National Council for final approval at the end of last year and has been approved for use on the Prayerwatch. Over

12

the last three years in the prophetic word, the call to evangelise has been 35% to 45% in the words received, but in the last six months, it jumped to 65% of the words received. God is calling us to reach out to others and to bring more people into the ‘Lamb of God’ community. For our benefit, we need to grow in numbers and be challenged to grow spiritually by new people. The present climate in New Zealand means that evangelization is hard work and has been described as being like ‘ploughing tarmac’. Evangelization needs to go hand in hand with spiritual warfare as we need to prepare the ground with prayer initially. Again God is calling us to take a stand as in the prophetic word given from January until June 2016, the theme of spiritual warfare was in 52 words out of 119 [45%] received. The last six months from July to December 2016 showed an increasing percentage as another 48 words out of 82 [60%] were received with encouragement to spiritual warfare. Prayer is an important part of our preparation to reach out to others as we need courage, not timidity to invite people to our homes and meetings. Many of us have watched Anton Colella speak at the International Coordinators Meeting on ‘Mission’, a challenging teaching where Anton shared how he shared Jesus at his workplace, seated on an airplane and many other places. In February Dave Hughes was here in the ‘Lamb of God’ and taught on ‘Moses and the Burning Bush’ a look at the mission God gave to Moses in leading the Israelites from Egypt to the promised land. Again Dave looked at our mission as ‘Lamb of God’ to build a Bulwark [a place of safety] but also to invite people to come and share in this safe way of life, the Promised Land. No doubt we are aware of our call to raise our children for Jesus but are we concerned about other people we come in contact with in our daily lives, our extended families, our neighbour, our friends, our work colleagues and any others we have contact with. New Zealand today is a difficult place to be a Christian as many people go against Christian values or seemly have no interest in things Christian. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28: 18-20 NIV Jesus is very clear in our mission, to go and make disciples so let us prepare the ground with prayer and spiritual warfare by committing to an hour on the Prayerwatch. Let us encourage each other to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and God’s kingdom of joy, peace and righteous with courage and perseverance. Please use the prayer for ‘Evangelization’ in our time on the Watch by printing a copy of the following prayer or asking your leaders for a copy. PRAYER FOR EVANGELIZATION Lord God, we pray for the total evangelization of New Zealand. That every man, woman, child, family, household, community, organisation, leader and law in this country will submit to God’s ways and truths and everyone will confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. We pray for growth in our community the ‘Lamb of God’, that more people will hear and respond to the call you are placing on their lives. We pray that each of us may be open every day for opportunities to witness to others the joy of the gospel – the Good News of your Kingdom of peace, joy and righteousness and we will have the wisdom and faith to act.

Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on!

13

If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch, then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all.
