REFLECTIONS: … ‘A Burwood Blessing out of the Earthquakes…’

For most of you who have visited the EasternSuburbs of Christchurch these past couple ofyears and headed from the Palms Mall and alongNew Brighton Road to the Lamb of God Clusterarea in Burwood, would have experienced adepressed feeling as you enter the significantlydamaged earthquake areas. You cannot help butsee and be concerned for your wheel alignmentnegotiating the twisted and pothole damagedroads, or looking right and left see hundreds of

hearts and they have from day one opened their doors to host many othercongregations who have lost their own church buildings to the earthquakes. At one timethey hosted five other Christian groups a week. Amazing generosity and ecumenicalcooperation.

And we in the Lamb of God have been especially blessed and privileged in ourrelationship with the Burwood Christian Centre [BCC] and Pastor Nigel and his people. They have received us with generosity and provided us with ample facility to run ourgatherings, our children’s ministry, and several social activities. What has grown is not a‘contracted agreement’ but rather a developing relationship and cooperation in service ofGod’s people. We see in this local church a passionate reaching out and desire to servein the immediate local community, and an ongoing reaching out to serve those still living

in the adjacent Red Zones. We are impressed. Andrecently Pastor Nigel invited Roger to speak at BCC totell the Lamb of God’s story of how we came to be,what we understand as our purpose in God as anecumenical Christian Community, and what we havelearnt in developing a particular ‘way of life’ asdisciples of Christ.

And so in the at times seemingly overwhelmingcircumstances of our situation, the Lord is at work instrengthening relationships across denominationalstreams to enrich our lives and to give witness in the

particular immediate world in which we live - Burwood, Christchurch, New Zealand.

‘My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me throughtheir message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am inyou. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.’

NEWS AND ARTICLES

GOD AT WORK- FR JOHN AIREY, PEOPLE OF HOPE, AND LAMB OF GOD

Our good friend Fr John Airey, CSsR, has just celebrated fifty years a priest. Howeverhis connection with the Lamb of God in Christchurch was quite an interesting journey. Itcame through a retreat visit he made to the People of Hope Community in Newark, NewJersey, USA, over thirty years ago. This visit was significant for Fr John and it changedhis life. He was in the United States for a time of refreshment and retreat and found thecommunity a great experience. When he returned to Aotearoa, and was based at theRedemptorist Monastery in North New Brighton, he immediately connected with theLamb of God. The 'change' came when a talk in the People of Hope displayed a worldmap showing the growth of communities and he was astonished to see a flag tagged'Lamb of God' stuck in his home town base of Christchurch. It had not been there whenhe went to the United States. Fr John says that from that moment he just wanted to'come home' - and so he did. He arrived on a Saturday morning to find this 'Lamb ofGod' group meeting in the Monastery Main Lounge for a day of reflection and teaching. Irecall him entering the room with a big smile and saying something like 'Hi, I am Fr JohnAirey and I would like to connect with you...'

Now- is God alive, or not? The Bishop later appointed Fr John as instructor to the Lambof God Catholic Fellowship and he taught our establishing courses. I shall never forgethis wonderful talk entitled 'Jesus Christ- fully Man and fully God'. Fr John gave us muchand he became, and is, a close friend of our family. He officiated at the wedding of ourson Glen and his bride Louise, and then sadly some seven months later at their doublefuneral service. Then eight months later at the wedding of our daughter Susan to Kieran.Indeed a wonderful brother in the Lord.

RACHEL FROM PITTSBURGH VISITS CHRISTCHURCH BRANCHSome insightful comments from Rachel Pepmeyer, People of God Community,Pittsburgh, USA

Recently, I have had the great fortune of visiting the Lamb of God community located inChristchurch, New Zealand. In preparation for my adventure across the pond, I thoughtabout the fulfilment I desired to gain from this once in a lifetime experience. Eagernessto feast my eyes on the beautiful landscape and to visit my dear friend Annie filled myheart, but above all I longed to serve God and assist His people. Our Father neverdisappoints, and He fed my hunger for service with daily opportunities to help the peoplewithin Lamb of God and the suburb of Burwood. I joined Annie as she served the Lambof God families through childcare, simple household chores, and high school youthwork. Additionally, together we served with the Burwood Christian Centre going door-knocking to locate those still suffering from the earthquakes that devastatedChristchurch in February 2011 and September 2010. Although playing with children andfilling out surveys were helpful and appreciated tasks, I feel our biggest service was inthe offering of our attention.

The earthquake tragedies that occurred a few years ago are still affecting the residentstoday. Many struggle to fight for just insurance claims, while others are currently in the

process of repairing or rebuilding their homes. Several simply need to tell their storiesand to know that their voices are heard - and so Annie and I did what little we could andlent our ears. We sat and listened as these fraught individuals expressed theirfrustrations, relayed their personal stories, and recalled with specific detail the events ofthe unforgettable disasters. Thankfully we were able to show love and provide somerelief merely by listening intently. I took notice of the dispositions of the different peoplewe talked to, and a significant difference was apparent between those who felt noconnection to any sort of community, those who felt supported by a corporate body ingeneral, and those who belong to the Lamb of God. It was evident that those of the firstgroup felt alone as they laboured to overcome the effects of the earthquakes; theydisplayed attitudes of tired and hopeless frustration. Those who had a support system inplace were coping much more efficiently and seemed to be progressing forward withconfidence and strength. While members of the Lamb of God also exhibited terrificstrength, they possessed a unique peace and grace, which I fully know comes fromliving in Christian community and having a relationship with God.

Brothers and sisters, the Lord has blessed us richly with the gift of community life! Hehas generously given us a wonderful Christian family to support and encourage us in themost powerful way - through prayer. During my short stay in Christchurch, Godcontinually reminded me of the special life we have together in the Sword of the Spirit. Ifeel tremendously lucky to be surrounded by countless joy-filled people who freelyexpress such selflessness and devotion to God. What an honour and privilege it is tojoin with you in worship and prayer!

Good and gracious Father, you overwhelm me with your kindness. Thank you for yourthoughtfulness and providing your children with a body to help us remain focused onyou. May we never take your precious gift for granted. May we always recognize thegreat works you are performing in our lives individually and the in the life we sharetogether in the Sword of the Spirit. Strengthen us, O Lord, and allow us boldness that wemay bear witness of the glory and power you pour out upon us. Amen. In Christ’s peace,Rachel.

Rachel- thank you for coming… Roger and Veronica

A SHARING FROM SUMMER OASIS AND WOMEN’S HOUSE 2014

A New Year heralds new beginnings and so it was with our Auckland Youth, who wereinvigorated with new life at Summer Oasis in Christchurch. To some it was the first timeever and it was like the dawn of a new day. To those who had been before, it was like anew experience. Jemima Rebello was blessedto attend Summer Oasis as well the SingleWomen’s Living Situation and this is her sharing:

Summer Oasis 2014 was smaller than usual butno less profound an experience. As a universitystudent I attended the Edge conference whichthis year focussed on family life in Christiancommunity. The teaching on being single, givenby Brian LaLonde, particularly spoke to me as heexplained that the Lord calls us to base our state

of life, whether single or married, on pursuing His kingdom. I was convicted to re-evaluate my life to ensure that I remove the obstacles that may prevent me from living inthis way.

Being a part of the Single Women’s House this year was also an immense blessing. Inliving and praying with seven other women during the week, the Lord showed me theareas he wanted me to grow in by revealing the many wonderful qualities I saw in mysisters. Despite the busy week, we were able to spend quality time together and grow inour relationships with each other. Living outside the comforts of my own home andfamily relationships also taught me the importance of putting the needs of others abovemy own. These experiences showed me once again the importance of building strongrelationships with other Christian women and how blessed I am to be part of acommunity that supports me in doing this. Both Oasis and the household were trulySpirit-filled experiences and I know were a blessing to all who attended them.

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITYResource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes

Our Sure Hope in Christ, Sealed by the Spirit - March 2014

For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what hesees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

[Romans 8:24-25]

How sure are we of anything? Those who buy lotto tickets hope they will win. We hope for agood weather, although chances are even that the weather will be good. We hope that we willkeep our jobs, in spite of another re-structuring within the company. With these things our hopeis not sure. But what about the things that matters most, the things which are eternal? Thanksbe to God, we have a sure hope, an extraordinary guarantee, that we will spend eternity withGod. We are all familiar with John 3:16 – if not, read it and memorise it. The reason why Jesuscame is for us to believe in Him and have eternal life! How do we know for sure? God sealed Hispromise of salvation with the Holy Spirit! In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, thegospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who isthe guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.[Ephesians 1:13-14] So for those whose lives are being transformed by the Holy Spirit, we havea foretaste, a down payment, a guarantee of our sure hope in Christ!

So How Do We Grow in Our Sure Hope in Christ?1. We need to know the truth and fight for the truth. Life offers a lot of lies we can believe. Why?Our enemy does not want us to know and experience our sure hope in Christ – instead of livingin joy, love and peace, he wants us to be sad, gloomy and hopeless. “I like your Christ, I do notlike your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” ― Mahatma Gandhi. "IfChristians want us to believe in a Redeemer, let them act redeemed." – Voltaire.2. Live a victorious life. How? By not letting things trap us like lack of forgiveness, bitterness, resentments, grudges, etc. These things rob us of peace and joy. Choose to be the victors, notthe victims of life and its circumstances! Let the joy of the Lord be your strength.3. We are influenced a lot by our environment - we are social beings. Our friends tell a lot of whowe are. So we need to spend time with men and women who have their sights set on the surehope we have in Jesus Christ.4. Share the sure hope you have in Jesus with others around you! The best expression of ourlove for them is give them the best we have – our sure hope in Christ.5. In life, we experience both joys and sorrows, both ups and downs, both victories and defeats. But we need to live our lives knowing that one day, we will be the victors, the winners in this life.We will become full sons and daughters of God, and we will see God face to face, and serveHim forever.

Other Scripture References1. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.[Hebrews 11:1]2. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith andlove, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. [1Thessalonians 5:8]3. Other references: Romans 5:8; Romans 8:28; 2 Corinthians 3:11-13

For Personal Reflection and Group Sharing:1. What lies do I believe in my life? Do I live my life in confidence in Christ?2. What is my greatest fear? Has it been conquered by my sure hope in Christ?

PRAYERWATCH - SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISEReinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry outhis purpose… Jeremiah 51: 12 NIV

At the end of last year I looked at the importance of the Prophetic Word from ourgatherings and how it can impact the Prayerwatch especially as Spiritual Warfare is are-occurring theme. The first Word I received from our gatherings this year had a verystrong Spiritual Warfare theme and so a condensed version follows.

Christchurch Prophecy 2/2/14: “My children I want you to be an evangelistic people. Iwant you to be a people that will go out and talk about me to others. I call you to show

Page 10: The Lamb of God Chronicle 2014/[1403... · The Lamb of God Chronicle March 2014 The Lamb of God Community PO Box 35 054 Christchurch 8640 Phone [03] 383 2631 Fax [03] 383 0609 Mobile

10

compassion in your families, in your workplaces, in your neighbourhoods. I call you to bea people of spiritual warfare in your families, in your workplace, in your schools. I askyou this day to ask for a spirit of discernment, for the evil one is at work in all theseplaces. Ask me and I will show you and you do not need to do it in a loud voice, you cantake authority in my name, just inside yourself. There is a spiritual battle going on in thisland, in this country, in your homes, in yourselves. This is the bulwark I have called youto be right throughout the world. You have been called into this bulwark. You are to be apeople of authority. Go out and take spiritual authority. Do not let the evil one win. I amthe Lord, I have sent my son Jesus to take authority, to take spiritual authority, to telleveryone you know that you have a sense about me. I am your Saviour. I am your Lord.Go and do this my people.” Helen Elliott

Today we do not have to look very far to see that evil is on the move and the darkness isincreasing and the Church is attacked for standing for God’s word and way. Marriagehas been under pressure as people struggled with the permanence’s of it seekingseparation so family life has also being distorted. Last year we saw God’s institution ofMarriage redefined to suit mankind’s own sinfulness. Just recently we have seen anattack on the ‘Bible in Schools,’ a programme at an Auckland school which has decidedto continue it outside school time. At the Wellington Sevens Tournament this year, as inother years, drunkenness was a problem. The media most of the time misleads us sowe are more likely to sin than to help us to transform our minds and ways into beingdisciples of Jesus.

But the good news is Jesus walked this earth to show us the way, He died on the crossthat we are forgiven our sins and if we believe he is the Son of God, we will live forever.Further we are anointed with the Holy Spirit so we are gifted to live this way of life andhe gives us power to overcome evil. God is forming a Bulwark in today world which theLamb of God community is a part of, so we have support of brothers and sisters inupholding strong marriages and family life and to live a life of holiness. A Bulwark is awall or structure to protect a way of life such as we have in the Lamb of God. ThePrayerwatch is an important part of our life to build this spiritual wall to protect God’s callto be holy and righteous. Spiritual warfare is a part of our lives in our families, workplaces, schools or where ever we are, whether we like it or not. This spiritual wallneeds to be around our community, our families and ourselves as we go forth into theworld. As the bulwark we are called to be a ‘Community of Disciples on Mission’, ahaven to live in and a place to seek refuge from evil.

Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on! If you have any comments orquestions concerning the Prayerwatch then please send them to me or give them to oneof your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all.
