REFLECTIONS: ‘The Grace to Stay is Indeed an Amazing Grace…’

A few weeks ago in Christchurch we shared a Lord’s Day Celebration to mark the 35thanniversary of the founding of the Lamb of God. It was a memorable and joyful evening. As well as sharing from our early years we had several young children stand to sharewhat is significant in their memories of community life. The children witnessed to twojoys in our life, being those many lamington makes [yes - hard work but also wheremuch relationship building and fun was had] and the annual ‘Community Camp’ with thewater slides, mud pools and holding onto a sledge at speed down a bumpy hillside.

surrender to him not only as individuals but also as a community. Peace and blessing.’Shayne Bennett: Moderator of the Emmanuel Community

Ron Elliott, an early community founder and an Elder in the branch, wrote Shayne andthanked him for the help Emmanuel gave to us. In his email Ron recalled the group ofthirty plus we sent to Brisbane in our first year and how much impact the trip had on allof us. Shayne wrote back and expressed his delight in that Ron was still there and stillserving after 35 years. And Shayne commented to the effect that community building isoften very challenging and at times people just leave. He pointed out that often we donot recognise or acknowledge that there is also a grace at work- the ‘Grace of Staying’.Thank you to Shayne for that reminder and for that truth. And well done to Ron andHelen and many others in the Lamb of God for ‘staying with it’ and putting your hand onthe plough and keeping it there in building a ‘way of life’ that is a response to the call theLord placed on your life to ‘come and see’ and ‘come and stay.’ You will find thatVeronica and I are right alongside you.

BRUCE YOCUM IS NOT “JUST ANOTHER BROTHER”

Bruce has been working now with the Lamb of God formany years. During this time we have been privilegedindeed to have access to Bruce’s wisdom, plus we haveendured his dubious ‘poetry’, and we have had opportunityto share our lives with him. But most importantly we havetogether walked this journey in God with a very fine brother.Just last week I reminded Bruce that I have never sharedsuch a significant earthquake, causing such dreadfuldamage, with anyone else but him! We were actually in aCommunity Building Team meeting in my home when itstruck. Dramatic end of meeting. I thank Ken Noecker and

Mike Kramer of the Servants of the Word for allowing us to use the following profile ofBruce from the latest International Newsletter. Enjoy it: Roger***Note- two Lamb of God photos of Bruce are added to the original article

Bruce Yocum: “Just Another Brother”Those of us who have known Bruce for many years (with all his ranks and titles) simplywould find the above self-chosen title as “too small” a fit and therefore unacceptable. Butin our household in Monterrey, he does prefer this identity and he lives it: he is “justanother brother” of the house. Those of us who have known him longer would certainlyadd to his stature, but assuredly none would take from it. With the reader´s permission(but not necessarily with Bruce’s consent), I will proceed to adjust this perspective.

Undoubtedly, Bruce is a leader of men and communities. He is intellectually gifted and amost effective teacher, instructing us with his down to earth wisdom and interpretation ofscriptures. He offers to many people vision and prophetic guidance. He is a Christiancommunity builder around the world from Tampico here in Mexico to Christchurch inNew Zealand, passing yearly through London and Rome and on to the Fijian Islands.Having said these things, we must insist: when Bruce is in town, he is an ordinary andresponsible member of the household, fulfilling his weekly house chores, and holdingspecial advanced tutorials in morning coffee making for the younger brothers he liveswith. He daily rubs shoulders with these “very much younger” brothers, taking a keeninterest in them and their personal lives. Yes, Bruce is a “good brother to live with!”

Bruce is admired for the sympathetic and lowly posture he takes among us. His clearand simple teaching, along with his personal transparency and humorous wit, easilyplaces him as a bearer of peace to us all. Being as eloquent and as brilliant as he is inhis native tongue, he insists in giving his talks to us in Spanish, to the delight of all ourbrethren here in our Latin American region. At times, his frustration in communicating ina foreign tongue is obvious. This Spanish speaking crowd—the brothers he lives with—is all too quick to remind him of his mistakes. Laughter is scattered among the audienceas he occasionally misplace certain accents, or interchange terms intended to express“good,” instead of “sexually appealing”. But, he simply shakes his head and plowsthrough, lucky for us, bringing us into greater depths of knowledge and wisdom.

Bruce is also much appreciated by the women he works withon the Sword of the Spirit’s international women’sdevelopment committee. Bruce has an open ear to thewomen of this group, supporting and encouraging them inthe active participation and leadership roles that they play. One international women’s leader described Bruce in thefollowing way: “For the last 10 years, Bruce as a man who isliving single for the Lord has been untiringly at work in hiscare to promote and support women´s formation and growthin the Sword of the Spirit. This commitment and service is aninspiration for all of us women leaders.”

Bruce, in wryly describing himself as “minister of effervescent joy” insists on consideringhimself as lively and cheerful in the early hours of the day. I suppose there is no harm inhaving such a self-portrait of oneself. Bruce assures all of us continually that his title as“minister of effervescent joy” is simply an addition to his previously obtained(somewhere) title as Mr. Sunshine. I have to agree that he does bring “a certain kind ofjoy” to us in the mornings. Why, I remember one morning, a few years back, Brucebrought us great joy as he was leading the table and preparing his coffee. He took thehot water and poured it, not into his cup, but into the jar of instant coffee! Groans andother foreign tongued expressions came forth from Bruce. Nobody at the table “noticed”anything…until we all left the table. Then everyone broke into raucous laughter.

The final story to which I must personally attest is this: On a cold winter day inDecember in 1975, a certain young man at the age of 20 was determined to serve hisGod happily and in great bliss as a married man. All personal inclinations and keyfigures in his life seemed to advise in that direction, and he was very glad! However, anunexpected option in life crossed this this young man’s path. Bruce recommended thathe come to a Christmas retreat with The Servants of the Word at a Trappist monasteryin Dubuque, Iowa. This was a change of plans for this young Mexican man, but he

yielded to the invitation, for it was Bruce himself whowas proposing. Today, this now “older” Mexicanman is thankfully indebted to Bruce, who sawbeyond this man’s youthful enthusiasm, who sawbeyond his afro hairstyle and his personal disorder --- and saw a future Servant of the Word. Withheartfelt gratefulness, I thank you Bruce, for yourinvitation to me to be God´s servant, to join you andmany others in being “just another brother” like you.

AUCKLAND UPDATES

The month of May was an enriching one for Auckland community members. Bill &Jenny McElhinney, leaders of our Blenheim branch and a married Catholic couple of 43years, presented a Marriage Enrichment Seminar based on the teachings of the Church,Scripture and the international Sword of the Spirit Community. Patrick Amaral shares onwhat he received at the seminar: “Bill and Jenny were very down to earth. With theirvery personal sharing on the challenges in their marriage, they made me realize that Ihave the option of either living out my marriage as it is, or enriching it and living it to

the full. We, husband and wife, have different personalities, I need to understand myspouse's personality and appreciate and focus on the positives and downplay the traitsof my spouse that gets on my nerves. Bill and Jenny's humour made the session’senjoyable yet driving home meaningful points. I came out of the morning sessions withthe belief that my marriage can be enriched and I have some tools to help me in thejourney.”

Going forward from the Alpha Training Programme, which equipped communitymembers to outreach to non-Christians, Auckland Branch was blessed to have JonathanHesp, Executive Director of ALPHA attend a Branch meeting. Community memberslearned of how an outreach programme without any coercion, can invite non-Christiansto the faith, with successful results.

Philip Quense, who comes to us from the People of Hope Community in New Jersey,USA, in his outreach as a Lamb of God youth missionary shares how he invites non-Christians to the faith. Philip: Five months are completed, and it is time to share andreflect on some of the experiences of mission with Kairos NZ. What is a mission year:what is the point; what do you expect out of it? My initial attempts to explain a missionyear inevitably include explanations of service goals, organization program size, impacton the world, location and day to day activities. These are the “doings” or the “stuff” and“details” of a mission trip but not the heart of “being” on a gap year. The primary goal isa life surrendered to Jesus discovered thru dedication to study, prayer, life in anothercommunity and pushing yourself thru outreach and leadership. It is a time to experiencecommunity living, the good and the bad and the inevitable community relational anddirectional challenges which are ever present when two or more people decide to live incommitted relationships. But more importantly is the experience and example ofwatching other Christians living in the victory and hope of the Christian life. If youremember one thing then remember this, “a year spent apart for a life set apart for aneternity with Him is a year worth living.”

God calls us to put out into the deep for Him. We each say yes or no to this call in thecontext of our lives. Last year on a community retreat, I felt God urge my heart; Godoften urges with a purpose which is outsideour own plans; this nudge eventually led meto say yes to leave my engineering firm, after 3.5 years, to come to NZ for work withthe youth and the community. Some willsay it was a rather reckless planincongruent with the secure direction of mylife, and honestly it was the “financiallyunsafe move”. Now, I can say that Godwanted me to come in His wisdom. Jesus isabout a work in me “transforming my mind”and connecting my heart to “a clearerlifelong purpose.”

Each mission year has its unique challenges and qualities. New Zealand and Aucklandcity in particular was not a huge culture shock for me, with the English speaking andmetropolitan dynamic that is similar to New Jersey. Coming into a community which hasnational leadership, at least three distinct backgrounds and people I did not know meant

that listening, watching and adapting did have to happen. True of all church youth workand community work; you need to be able to think of the current people and situationsand ask yourself how should I act in this case? It will take a lifetime to get this down, butI have learned a lot from working with the Kairos team here. The greatest joys havebeen the hospitality in particular of the youth, the teaming experience with the Kairosteam and the time to question my faith and community life.

Finding a rhythm to life is tough when there is only one full time missionary. I don’t havea full building with several fellow chaplains whose day to day involves Universityoutreach. But starting up a UCO [University Christian Outreach] with a group of greatpeople, such as we have in Auckland, has been exciting and fulfilling. It is certainlyGod’s work, and we get to jump in and be his hands and feet. More to come as theyear progresses but praise God for his faithfulness. “

MICHAEL QUIGLEY 27/2/33 – 2/5/14

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITYResource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes

The Battlefield in Your Mind - June 2014

… Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the willof God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. [Romans 12:2]

What goes on in our minds is something even the greatest scientists, with all the technologicaladvancements, cannot explain. In our minds are past emotions, our memories of both goodtimes and bad, pleasure and hurts, and so on. But the mind is also where we form and chooseour values, principles, and priorities in life. Anything can come to our minds and we need toprocess them – either accept them or reject them. Like in the cartoons, we have two voiceswithin us – the good [represented by an angel] and the bad [represented by the devil]. How dowe know which side is saying which? We are bombarded with moral choices we face daily, andsometimes we make mistakes in our choices and sometimes we choose the right decision. There is a spiritual warfare always happening 24/7 between our ears.

So How Do We Win in the Battlefield in our Minds?1. We need to grow in knowing the mind of God. The first way is to read the Bible daily and liveout the teachings that it says. We need to know the ways of Jesus, the mind of Jesus, and thecharacter of Jesus. What would Jesus do in that situation?2. We need to be careful what thoughts captivate us – are they righteous and wholesome, orunholy and self-seeking? If they are in the secondary group, we need to decide to keep the‘garbage out.’3. We need to look at the media that we let our minds be influenced with. Are they coming frompeople who desire to love and serve God, or not? That is why it is good to read and learn fromthe lives of saints and their teachings.4. Aside from the media, people greatly influence us. Without thinking, we absorb the values andthe character of those who we hang around with. Are those closest to us want to love God?Would Jesus be happy with my friends’ choice of words?5. Many of us believe in lies, and these lies prevent us from drawing close to God and living inpeace. We need someone who we can share our life with who can mentor us and help usidentify and uproot those lies from our lives.6. Lastly, choose to forgive rather than to keep the hurts and grudges inside. Choosing to behurt and re-live those hurts makes us live in the past. We need to let go, surrender thosegrudges and let God deal with them, so we can move on in peace in our lives.

Other Scripture References1. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and takeevery thought captive to obey Christ… [2 Corinthians 10:5]2. … whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever islovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [Philippians 4:8]3. Other references: Proverbs 3:7; Proverbs 13:20; Matthew 22:37; Romans 8:6-7; Romans12:19-21.

For Personal Reflection and Group Sharing:1. Am I careful with what captivates my mind?2. Who is winning in the daily battle in my mind? Am I growing in the wisdom and knowledge ofGod every day?

PRAYERWATCH - SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISEReinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry outhis purpose… Jeremiah 51: 12

Jesus, in John 17: 15 said to His disciples that “my prayer is not that you take them outof the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” Jesus prays for his disciplesand for us in John 17: 17-19: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sentme into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that theytoo may be truly sanctified.”

Jesus is telling us that to be protected from the evil one we need to know the truth. Alsowe are in the world so we cannot avoid this battle. Picture Paul seated at a desk writingas he is chained to a Roman soldier in full armour. This soldier had dressed putting onhis tunic first, then his belt around his waist, followed by armour with some hooked intohis belt. Next he attaches his sword to his belt giving him the freedom to move aboutfreely and easily.

Ephesians 6: 14: Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist…

We all know a belt is an important item of clothing as it holds our garments in place andthe consequences when it fails to do its job. Imagine a soldier with a faulty or no belt andthe struggle he would have to defend himself or even to fight. The belt of truth, God senthis only Son, Jesus to show us the way, to die on the cross that we might haveforgiveness of our sins, rose from the dead that we might have eternal life with God ourFather and sent the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us. We need to know the full

truth as it affects our integrity and faithfulness as the belt helps our ease and freedom ofmovement. As Christians, the belt of truth allows us to move freely and quickly withourselves, with others and with God. Paul compares “Truth” with the belt so if we do notknow the truth our armour will be at our feet with nothing to hold it in place. All thingsneed to be tested by God’s word and what agrees with the Bible is truth. If it is in conflictwith the Bible it is false. It is the belt that holds the Roman soldier’s armour in place justas it is the belt of Truth that holds our armour in place and helps protects us from theevils of this world. How we need to know God’s Word of Truth.

Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on!
