The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake continued to celebrate its fifth anniversary with a record- breaking August. The Lodge, which opened its new outdoor Terrace Grill this summer saw a 13-percent increase in overall operating profit this month. Food and beverage sales increased by 31 percent while retail sales grew 2 percent. “We are ecstatic that in the current economic climate, The Lodge was able to achieve a record breaking month this August and have its best month ever since opening in 2004. This continues to reinforce our belief that the investments made by the county such as an outdoor pool and outdoor dining terrace help The Lodge attract new guests and give past guests a reason to return,” said General Manager Jeannette Petrolia. “I am encouraged that The Lodge will continue to be a catalyst for growth of the hospitality industry in the county and Northeast Ohio,” said Petrolia. In honor of this achievement, The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake recently

recognized 14 associates who have been with The Lodge since it opened in 2004. A special celebratory luncheon with State Representative Debbie Newcomb was held in their honor at The Lodge on Sept. 1. Associates who were recognized for their five years of service include: Jim Brainard, Geri Chappel, Kellie Emmett, Darla Greene, Phil Grof, Charlene Horgan, Sandy King, Kim Nagle, Eric Ogrodnichek, Joanne Parada, Kimberly Patrone, Kim Petrowski, Austin Stouder and Scott Williams. The Lodge is committed to providing employment opportunities for local residents, and is proud that 12 of the 14 honored associates are Ashtabula County residents.

Noble Art Entertainment’s dinner theater shows return to Geneva on the Lake this October with another

installment of Classic Horror! Last year’s show featured horror

authors Bram Stoker, Mary Shelly, Robert Lewis Stevenson and Edgar Allen Poe. This year’s show focuses entirely on

Poe and highlights some of his greatest works including “The Raven”, “Tell

Tale Heart”, “The Cask of Amontillado” and many more.

Before continuing with the details of the dinner theatre’s evening of entertainment, let us delve into the life of Edger Allan Poe, the

man, perhaps to gain insight in the darkness of his stories.

He was born Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809, the second child of actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe, Jr. He had an elder brother, William Henry Leonard Poe, and a younger sister, Rosalie Poe. Edgar may have been named after a character in William Shakespeare’s King Lear , a play the couple was performing in 1809. His father abandoned their family in 1810, and his mother died a year later from consumption. Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan, a successful Scottish merchant in Richmond, Virginia, who dealt in a variety of goods including tobacco, cloth, wheat, tombstones, and slaves. The Allans served as a foster family but never formally adopted Poe, though they gave him the name “Edgar Allan Poe”.

Outside of the traditional schooling, which came primarily in Scotland and England,

Poe had very little professional

training

to become a writer. He registered at the one-year-old University of Virginia in February 1826 to study languages. Poe gave up on the university after a year, and traveled to Boston in April 1827, sustaining himself with odd jobs as a clerk and newspaper writer.

Unable to support himself, on May 27, 1827, Poe enlisted in the United States Army. That same year, he released his first book, a 40-page collection of poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems , attributed with the byline “by a Bostonian”. Only 50Êcopies were printed, and the book received virtually no attention. There were

a lot of obstructions for Poe but he finally was discharged on April 15, 1829. Poe moved back to Baltimore for a time, to stay with his widowed aunt Maria Clemm, her daughter, Virginia Eliza Clemm (Poe’s first cousin whom he later married), his brother Henry, and his invalid grandmother Elizabeth Cairnes Poe. Meanwhile, Poe published his second book, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems , in Baltimore in 1829.

Poe traveled to West Point and matriculated as a cadet. In the meantime, John Allan married his second wife. The marriage, and bitter quarrels with Poe over the children born to Allan out of affairs, led to the foster father finally disowning Poe.

Around 1831 Poe began more earnest attempts to start his career as a writer. He chose a difficult time in American publishing to do so. He was the first well- known American to try to live by writing alone and was hampered by the lack of an international copyright law. Publishers often pirated copies of British works rather than paying for new work by Americans. The industry was also particularly hurt by the Panic of 1837. Despite a booming growth in

American periodicals around this time period, fueled in part by

new technology, many did not last beyond a few issues

and publishers often refused to pay their

writers or paid them much later than

they promised.

Poe,

throughout his attempts at pursuing a

successful literary career, would be forced to constantly make humiliating pleas for money and other assistance for the rest of his life.

After his early attempts at poetry, Poe had turned his attention to a different writing style. He placed a few

stories with a Philadelphia publication and began work on his only drama, Politian . The Saturday Visitor , a Baltimore paper, awarded Poe a prize in October 1833 for his short story “MS. Found in a Bottle”. The story brought him to the attention of John P. Kennedy, a Baltimorian of considerable means. He helped Poe place some of his stories, and introduced him to Thomas W. White, editor of the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. Poe became assistant editor of the periodical in August 1835; however, within a few weeks, he was discharged after being found drunk repeatedly. At this point Poe secretly married his cousin Virginia who was thirteen at the time and brought her to Baltimore. With the promise of good behavior Edger was given a second chance at the SL Messenger .

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket was published and widely reviewed in 1838. In the summer of 1839, Poe became assistant editor of Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine . He published numerous articles, stories, and reviews, enhancing his reputation as a trenchant critic that he had established at the Southern Literary Messenger . Also in 1839, the collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was published in twoÊvolumes, though he made little money off of it and it received mixed reviews. Poe left Burton’s after about a year and found a position as assistant at Graham’s Magazine .

One evening in January 1842, Virginia showed the first signs of consumption, now known as tuberculosis, while singing and playing the piano. Poe described it as breaking a blood vessel in her throat. She only partially recovered. Poe began to drink more heavily under the stress of Virginia’s illness. He left Graham’s and attempted to find a new position, for a time angling for a government post. He returned to New York, where he worked briefly at the Evening Mirror before becoming editor of the Broadway Journal and, later, sole owner. There he alienated himself from other writers by publicly accusing Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of plagiarism, though Longfellow never responded. On January 29, 1845, his poem “The Raven” appeared in the Evening Mirror and became a popular sensation. Though it made Poe a household name almost instantly, he was paid only $9 for its publication. Poe’s best known fiction works are Gothic, a genre he followed to appease the public taste. His most recurring themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs, the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning.

On October 3, 1849, Poe was found on the streets of Baltimore delirious, “in great distress, and... in need of immediate assistance”, according to the man who found him, Joseph W. Walker. He was taken to the Washington College Hospital, where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849, at 5:00 in the morning.

Now that some facts about the man behind the story have been revealed we’ll bring the focus back to the present day and what the evening at The Historic Oak Room holds in store: The storyline of the evening finds the guests who have been invited to attend a meeting of the Baltimore Literary Society where Mr. Poe will be sharing several new works. As the evening progresses, the stories and Poems begin to grow darker, as Poe himself echoes their mood. One of the most memorable moments of the evening is an original choral adaptation of “The Bells”, where the actors’ voices sometimes meld harmoniously and other times intentionally clash to bring out the nuances of this amazing poem.

“Last year’s show had a lot of twists and turns tying the evening together,” said director Brook Hall, “This year we are keeping the in between dialogue sparse in order to give our complete attention to the wonderful works of Poe.”

As always with Noble Art’s dinner theater productions, the 6 course meal is themed to match the performance. For this show, Dave Otto and his team from the Old Firehouse Winery have created a menu based on Poe’s life. Dishes include ingredients from many of Poe’s former homes and stories like: Maryland Crab, Boston Beans, New York Cheesecake, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Virginia Ham, Charleston Southern pan fried Quail and more.

Cast includes: Brook Collin Hall as Edgar Allen Poe

Laura Piette as Maria “Muddy” Clemm, Poe’s Aunt

Michael Riffe as Rufus Grizwold, Editor, Poet and Poe’s greatest rival.

Bruce Call and Maureen Tanner as Warren and Ellie Blankenship our hosts for the evening and members of the literary society.

Fall – The Season of Mulled Wine Begins

Riesling Rosemary Mulled Wine I NGREDIENTS: • ½ c water • ½ c sugar • 2 Tbsp rosemary • 1/4 cup honey • 2 lemons • 2 bottles Riesling white wine

Simmer (but not boil) the water, sugar, rosemary, and honey for 10 minutes. Add in the wine. Peel the lemons and add in the peels. Let sit for a length of time to seep in the flavors, without boiling. Strain out the larger bits and serve warm.

Brown Sugar Mulled Wine I NGREDIENTS: • 2 bottles dry Cabernet Sauvignon • Peel of 1 orange • 1 cinnamon stick, broken into halves • 8 whole cloves • 1 whole nutmeg • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar • orange slices

Pour wine in slow cooker. Wrap orange peel, cinnamon stick halves, cloves, and nutmeg in cheesecloth. Add to slow cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH 2 to 2.5 hours. Discard spice bag; ladle into glasses. Garnish with orange slices.

T he word “mulled” simply means heated and spiced. Many liquids can be mulled - mead, cider, and of course wine. Mulled wine is a traditional favorite in cooler locations, and goes well with the various celebrations that come around the end of the year. Mulled wines have a long history. In medieval times these wines were called Ypocras or Hipocris, named after the physician Hippocrates. They were thought to be very healthy, and indeed, with wine at the time being far more sanitary than water, these heated drinks did keep people healthy through the cold winters.

Moving forward to the 1500s, cookbooks listed methods of mulling “Clarrey”, or Bordeaux. Recipes involveing honey, cinnamon, cardamon, galingale and of course French wine. Mulled wine was a favorite in Victorian England, and Negus - a type of

mulled wine - was even served to children at their birthday parties. Today, mulled wine is a staple at many holiday parties. Mulled wines today are as varied as sangria recipes. There are different styles in every part of the world - some favor using white wine, others red. Some add in only a few spices, while others pour

in oranges, cloves, twelve spices and more fruit for color! Your mulled drink is limited only by your own imagination!

Tips and Warnings · Mulled wine can be made from red or white wine. Zinfandel is great, but merlot also works well. Among white wines, Riesling and Vignoles are good choices. · Wines that have been aged in oak do not make good mulled wine. · Don’t pay too much for wine to mull, but don’t pay too little, either. A bad wine becomes even worse when heated. · If using white wine, try using Turbinado (unrefined) sugar for a more complex taste. Turbinado’s subtleties are lost in red wine, however. · Always use a stainless steel, ceramic, heatproof glass or nonstick coated pot to mull the wine in. The acids in the wine can react with an aluminum pot and give the final product a metallic taste.

Rock Hall Announces Big Brother and the Holding Company Will Launch 14th Annual American Music Masters Series

Spend an evening with Janis Joplin’s original band Big Brother and the Holding Company

Cleveland, OH - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Case Western Reserve University along with Beachland Ballroom will host a special launch of the 14th Annual American Music Masters series honoring Janis Joplin on Thursday, October 22 with an evening with her original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The annual series of events will continue the week of November 9, 2009 and the schedule of events and concert tribute lineup will be announced in the coming weeks. The kickoff event begins at 5 p.m. in the

Rock Hall’s 4th Floor Theater where original members of Big Brother Peter Albin, Sam Andrew and Dave Getz will tell their story through an intimate live interview.

Immediately following, Big Brother

will participate in an autograph signing. The

Rock Hall interview is FREE and open to the public.

Please email [email protected] or call (216) 515-8426 to RSVP. “ It’s appropriate that we kick off this year’s celebration with Big Brother and the Holding Company,” said Dr. Lauren Onkey, vice president of education and public programs for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. “ Janis Joplin’s career as a rock singer began when she joined Big Brother, they were the perfect match. We’re thrilled that they can join us and help to tell

Joplin’s incredible story.” The evening will continue with Big Brother and the Holding Company performing live at the Beachland Ballroom. Doors open at 7 p.m. Big Brother will be joined by Cleveland’s own Mary Bridget Davies, the actress and vocalist who played Joplin in the Cleveland stage production “Love, Janis” inspired by Janis’ sister Laura’s best-selling book of the same name. Tickets to the concert go on sale Friday, September 18 and are $18 in advance and $20 day of show. Visit http:// www.ticketweb.com/. The Rock Hall will capture an oral history from the band to include in the Rock Hall’s Library and Archives which will open to the public in late 2010. Now in its 14th year, the American Music Masters® series explores the legacy of a pioneering rock and roll figure in a range of events that includes Museum exhibits, lectures, films, a major conference and a tribute concert benefiting the Rock Hall’s education programs. Drawing together experts, artists, fans and friends, these events

provide new perspectives on the most beloved and influential musicians of the past century. The tribute concert brings together a diverse mix of artists and musical styles, and as a result, many magical moments have taken place over the years. In 2004, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss performed onstage together for the first time to honor Lead Belly. This year the pair was awarded the highest honors of Album of the Year for Raising Sand and Record of the Year for “Please Read the Letter” at the 51st annual Grammy awards. Honoree Jerry Lee Lewis, who was not scheduled to perform at the 2007 concert, was moved to take the stage at the end of the show. Lewis tenderly played the piano and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” At the first American Music Masters tribute concert, Bruce Springsteen set the bar high and performed in honor of Woody Guthrie. The most star-studded and unique performance by a trio was Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke and Elvis Costello paying tribute to Sam Cooke in 2005. Last

By Jim Ales N ewly remodeled Chardon Tavern & Grill (formerly Chardon Beverage), has given the city of Chardon a heightened venue for all occasions. Reopened on January 2009, Marty & Char Flynn and Rich & Amie Willner were pleased to announce themselves as the new owners of The Chardon Tavern & Grill.

While keeping the tradition of an ‘all are welcome’ feeling long associated with ‘The Bev’, the renovations, remodeling, and upgrades provide a family friendly atmosphere unique to Chardon and suitable for everyone. The new dining area backed by the new kitchen and menu offers a variety of ‘friendly’ food of exceptional quality.

One unique feature they have exclusively is their signature Maple Wing made from real Chardon maple syrup. “This is our top selling wing,” says Marty Flynn. When you bite into one of these, you’ll understand why it’s their top seller. Look for a blue ribbon sometime in the future for the Maple Wing. Additional sauce flavors include BBQ, Barbalo, Terriyaki, Cajun, and Garlic- Parmesan.

The full menu also includes appetizers such as Potato Skins, Chile Cheese Fries, Jumbo Pretzels w/Beer Cheese Sauce, Jalapeño Poppers and more. 12 inch Pizzas come in thin or regular crusts starting only at $6.99. Delicious Shrimp or Fish baskets served with fries and cole slaw for only $7.99. Seasonal Soups are available upon request, as well as Dinner and / or Chicken Salads.

From the grill is their top entry half pound Burger built to order several ways and served on a toasted Kaiser Roll. If that isn’t enough, you can order the full pound Ultimate Burger w/The Works. Also from the grill are Slider Baskets – 4 mini burgers, Philly Cheese steak, and Grilled Cheese.

Other sandwiches include Reuben, Corned Beef, Chicken and Fish. If you like wraps you can choose from Philly, Veggie, BLT and several

others. In addition to the

full menu is the Kids Menu and don’t forget to ask for crayons to keep the little ones occupied while waiting to be served.

Another fine feature, there are 10 Beers on tap kept cold with a brand new nitro tap system. “It’s probably the coldest beer in Chardon,” Marty proudly expresses. One non-alcoholic beverage that is popular is the Arnold Palmer, which is half lemonade and

half ice tea. That was what he drank hence the name. Other

refreshments include assorted fountain sodas, juices, milk

and coffee.

Fast, friendly and fun service is always a sure thing at the Tavern & Grill. Manager Lori Purcell is well within her professional element of 21 years. “It’s not only my

profession, but it’s also my social life and I love it,” she says. You can always count on her cheerful nature anytime you frequent the Tavern.

There are 5 new Flat Screen TV’s ensuring that there isn’t a bad seat in the

house to watch your favorite sporting events. Weather it’s the Browns, Ohio State football, baseball playoffs, NASCAR races, and so on, the sound and vision will be impeccable as you enjoy a great meal with your favorite drink(s). Sporting event specials include Wings are 10 for $5.00 and Burgers are $5.00. Ohio State game Monday night Football games there are free Hot Dogs. Every Saturday features live music with fine local bands from around the North Coast regions “The bands have had a very nice turn out,” Marty says. Bands such as Hillbillies in Denial, Hog Wild and Swamp Cats have already had fun filled evenings as well as many other bands. Entertainment starts at 9 pm. When the bands are not entertaining, the newly installed Internet Jukebox will lend thousands of choices of music from any genre.

The first annual Clam Bake will be

on Saturday Oct 17 th. They are still in the process of making plans and you can inquire within for more information. This is sure to be a great time. Arcade and games of skill offer entertainment year round and there are plans to start a Bowling League soon for the Bowling machine game

Once again, time is running short for the outdoor music venue. It’s been a little on the cool side this year, but there have been many great outdoor events, big and small, throughout the area that have made this summer one to remember. I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy a few of the jazz filled, sunny afternoons or warm pleasant evenings upon one of the many outdoor patios along the North Coast. Outdoor dining and entertainment at the many area wineries and restaurants, along with the multitude of summer concerts throughout Northeast Ohio have become a staple in the lives of locals and tourists alike.

Though the season may be changing, the amount of quality establishments and talented artists in the Cleveland area is always limitless. We just have to make the adjustments necessary for the indoor dining experience, such as, no flip flops. Though we must make a few alterations to the wardrobe and maybe allow a little extra travel time, due to poor road

conditions, the jazz will continue to flow along the North Coast, regardless of weather.

Thursday nights at Melange continue to be a highlight in the area. Every Thursday is “Martini Night” at this fine Beachwood club, with $5.00 Martinis from 4 until 10 pm. Along with this enticing offer, Melange continues to bring to the stage some of the most respected names in the Cleveland jazz scene.

Thursday, September 24th, Melange welcomes The Ray Porello Trio. The following Thursday, October 1st, The Glenn Davis Group will take the stage. Either of these groups will dazzle you with the level of professionalism and skill that they bring to their performance. Five dollar martinis start at 4:00, the jazz begins at 7:00. Whatever time you choose to arrive you may wish you had gotten there just a little sooner. Located in the La Place Plaza at 2101 Richmond Rd. in

Beachwood, a visit to Melange will be well worth your time. Check out www.dinemelange.com for more information.

There are several other unique clubs that feature some of Cleveland’s finest jazz players. Each has its own special motif and each is a special piece of Cleveland’s cultural heritage. The Velvet Tango Room is just such a place. Located at 2095 Columbus Rd. in Cleveland, the staff of VTR is very proud of their heritage and their drink menu. Mondays and Thursdays, Harry Bacharach is the guest pianist. Click on www.velvettangoroom.com to learn more about this little hideaway.

The Light Bistro is another of the many hidden jazz treasures that Cleveland has to offer. Located at 2801 Bridge Ave. on the near West Side, The Light Bistro menu features progressive American cuisine, that simply makes you want to try everything. The musical guests include such respected names as, Evelyn Wright, Dave Thomas and Ernie Krivda. Simply put, each a master of their craft. With musicians of this caliber and a menu this amazing, The Light Bistro is definitely way up on the “Must Visit” list. Go to www.lightbistro.com and learn more.

Just think, a little while ago, you were feeling as if fun would end with the season. Now you have all these places to experience. So long summer.... Helllloo Autumn!

year, a 93-year-old Les Paul took the stage with his trio and then led an epic jam with some of rock and roll’s greatest guitarists, from Jennifer Batten to Slash.

About Big Brother and the Holding Company Big Brother and the Holding Company was formed by Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, James Gurley and Chuck Jones in San Francisco in 1965. They quickly became the house band at the Avalon Ballroom and began to develop a loyal following, largely due to the charismatic, pioneering guitarwork of James Gurley. During the winter of 1966, Chuck Jones left the band and was replaced by Dave Getz. Peter Albin was the main vocalist at this time, and although Sam helped out with the singing, it was time to find a singer who could match the group’s instrumental energy. A friend, Chet Helms, remembered Janis Joplin from his University of Texas days and brought her back to San Francisco, where she had tried to launch a singing career in 1963 and 1964. Janis came to town, sang a couple of tunes with the band and was enthusiastically welcomed into the group, playing her first Big Brother engagement at the Avalon Ball room in June of 1966. Big Brother had been a loose, ramshackle, experimenting ensemble and now, with Janis, the music became more structured and the band became a family.

In August 1966, Big Brother went to Chicago where they recorded their first album at Mainstream Records and in the ensuing months began to build an audience. June of 1967 brought the Monterey Pop Festival, where Janis became larger than life and propelled Big Brother into the national spotlight. Janis had the freedom to be herself and people responded to the power of the band and to Janis’ unique voice.

Janis left Big Brother in December 1968 and Sam Andrew went with her, while Peter Albin and Dave Getz joined Country Joe and the Fish. In the fall of 1969, Peter, Sam, Dave and James resurrected Big Brother along with new members Dave Schallock, Nick Gravenites and Kathi McDonald and released two albums, Be A Brother (1970) and How Hard It Is (1971). Recent Big Brother and the Holding Company CD releases have been Do What You Love, the Janis Joplin boxed set on Sony, Live At Winterland and now the band is preparing a new offering, a live recording of a concert in Burg Herzberg, Germany.

Ball and Chain The Janis Joplin

Concert Experience

Ball and Chain literally rocked the strip when they recently performed on Sportsterz outdoor stage, Geneva- on-the-Lake, for the Thunder on the Strip bike event. The Midwest’s only Janis Joplin Tribute Band

has been staying busy these past few years, playing all across Lorain, Cuyahoga, Summit,

Huron Counties and Kelly’s Island. Some of the fine establishments include :

Sly Fox, Quaker Steak & Lube Sheffield, Scorcher’s, Shifters, Johnny Rotten’s, The

Captains

Club, Ziggy’s, The Grotto, Scoreboards, Quaker Steak & Lube

Valley View, The Main Street Saloon, The Cove, The Boathouse, It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere, Bag The Moon & Docker’s on Kelly’s Island. A Ball and Chain performance is a 4 hour show of blues, rock, and Janis Joplin. Depending on the event, they either mix the Joplin tunes into the sets, or perform a 1- 2 hour show of The Janis Joplin Concert Experience. Lead singer Geri Ciachi is Joplin personified,

using character, costume, and music to bring back the raw

passion of the great blues/rock diva. This is the band’s favorite show to do, and they love involving the audience at venues like Cleveland’s House of Blues, Nelson’s Ledges Quarry Park, Elyria Arts & Culture Fest, Oberlin Chalk

Walk, Lorain Palace Civic Center, Music Fest 1, 2 & 3, Conneaut Lake Park, Youngstown’s Michael O’Malley’s and Akron’s Rockin On The Runway at the 356th Fighter Group, Rock The Docks, Suffest, BBQ Blues & Brews & 4th, 5th & 6th Annual Clay’s Rock N

Geri has a powerhouse voice as well as an engaging stage presence, and is backed up by capable band members Mike Beeble (lead guitar), Guy Wharton (bass) and Marty Zlocki on drums. Ball and Chain is a tight- knit group with great camaraderie among the members, and they are clearly having the time of their lives bringing the music of Janis Joplin to the masses. For those of us who remember Janis, there will never be another vocalist who can match her for sheer emotional intensity. And for those who came along after her death, there is Ball and Chain to help recreate the heart-wrenching music of this great singer who was taken from this world much too soon. myspace.com/ ballandchaintribute

By Helen Marketti R ecently seeing The Cryers at The Winchester in Lakewood, the crowd was treated to original material as well as cover songs. Later in the evening, they were also the band for Denny Laine (Moody Blues, Wings). If only one word could be used to describe The Cryers, it would be: rockin’. The Cryers , a New Jersey based band, have been together since 1991. In addition to writing and recording their own material, they also perform with classic rock artists such as Denny Laine, Terry Sylvester (The Hollies), Joey Molland (Badfinger), Ian Mitchell (The Bay City

Rollers) and many more. Band members are Joe Orlando (bassist/

vocalist), Jeff Brown (guitarist/

vocals), Tommy

Seesellberg (drummer) and Belle Liao (keyboardist/vocalist). Belle is the only

female in the four-piece band. Classically trained in piano, Belle joined The Cryers in 1993. Joe suggested she join the group. “Joe and I have been friends for a long time,” said Belle. “He asked me if I would like to join and I said “yes” but give me some time first. I needed to learn the rock and roll because I was more into classical presentations.” Belle’s father was a civil engineer so she lived in several places while growing up. “I was born in Taiwan then we moved to North Africa,” she said. “I also lived in Salzburg, Austria where I spent four years studying music. Then I graduated from New York City High School in Manhattan.” While living in various geographical locations Belle still maintained her interest in music and playing. When asked if she had a particular favorite artist or more specific, any other females in the music industry that may have inspired her Belle said, “Music itself is all wonderful. I like to play more than anything else.” She added that each artist is different so it is important to appreciate what everyone does. What is it like to be the only female in the band? “I am like one of the guys. I feel very free. We are all close friends,” Belle said thoughtfully. “We are together a lot so things work out smoothly and naturally. We take care of each other. The guys treat me well.” The Cryers have a new CD, Rock n’ Roll Holiday that is currently being recorded in the studio and will tentatively be released in January of 2010. “Joe and Jeff usually write the songs but they welcome input from all of us,” said Belle. The new CD will consist of all original tracks. In addition to writing, recording and performing on their own and with various music legends, Joe and Belle are also co- owners of Monmouth Academy of Musical Arts located in Morganville, New Jersey. The academy is a learning mecca of music education for young people and for those interested in honing their skills a bit more. It has a recording studio, rehearsal studio, instructional classrooms and a retail store that carries sheet music of all genres. Joe,

Belle and Jeff also teach at the academy. The professional

staff also expands to those who have been on the road with many artists of rock’s notables such as Blood, Sweat & Tears, Cyndi Lauper and Bruce Springsteen as well as graduates from various music schools across the country such as Julliard and Berklee College of Music. Offering her view on the philosophy of life and pursuing dreams, Belle said, “No matter what - keep going, keep doing what you’re doing and enjoy it. I really enjoy what I do. It’s a lot of fun.”

For more information about The Cryers , please check out: www.myspace.com/ thecryersrockon

Their first CD The Cryers has 12 tracks with a combination of cover songs and original material. For a preview, you can listen to a snippet of each track and purchase through: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cryers

The Cryers are planning a CD Release Party/ Concert for their new CD Rock n’ Roll Holiday at The Record Collector in Bordentown, New Jersey sometime in January 2010. (http://www.the-record-collector.com/)

Joe Stump Shreds at

The Cove Nite Club October 2nd

Joe Stump is one of the most intense

and over the top guitarists on the planet. His maniacal guitar

driven releases are amazing displays of

power and jaw dropping

technical command. He was named

in the top ten fastest shredders of all time by Guitar One Magazine and by Guitarist as one of the top 20 shredders of all time.

The American guitar hero returned on April 17th 2009 with his most diverse and complete solo effort to date in “Virtuostic Vendetta”. Not only a killer shred record but also a great all around guitar driven release, blending neo-classical speed metal, European influenced shred and old school hard rock into a great combination of playing and tracks that will appeal to a wide range of guitar enthusiasts and metal fans worldwide. Great melodies, killer riffs and from the heart emotionally drenched playing are combined with all the insane shredding you’d expect making this the most exciting record of Joe’s career. Proclaimed by many music experts as the ultimate guitar monster you’ll hear why words like Godlike, shred master, brilliant and many more have been used to describe this Shredlord’s playing style. Joe comments on the new material, “ On this record I kind of went back and re-introduced myself to myself. Two of my early albums “Guitar Dominance” and “Supersonic Shred Machine” were real favorites among my fans, and this new record is quite similar in that it’s fairly diverse with a cool mixture of tunes stylistically, but it all has my stamp on it. I’d like to think it’s my best overall effort as every aspect of this record is better than anything I’ve ever done, playing wise, guitar tones, compositions, production it’s all steps beyond any of my past releases. It’s also a very entertaining and listenable record considering there are no vocals. ”

A strong Ritchie Blackmore vibe is prevalent on this release, indeed inspiring one track title “Blackmore’s Boogie” as well as an original ode to the Rainbow classic “Gates If Babylon” in “The Dance of Kashani”. To his credit, Joe doesn’t shy away from hiding his influences, “I never claimed to be re- inventing the wheel. I just take the great influence of all my heroes -- Blackmore, Yngwie, Bach, Vivaldi, Gary Moore, Jimi

Page 17: The Lakehouse Inn The Lakehouse Inn - North Coast Voice 9-23.pdf · Edger Allan Poe, the man, perhaps to gain insight in the darkness of his stories. He was born Edgar Poe in Boston,

Hendrix, Uli Jon Roth, Schenker, Paganini -- and try to craft my own thing with it. I love guitar and I always try to make records that guitar fans and hard rock/metal fans will love as well”. Yet there is more on offer than the neo-classical influence such as “Old School Throwdown” which is a nod to players such as Hendrix, Frank Marino and Robin Trower. Joe also throws down thanks to his influences with the use of subtle phrases from well known classics which the keen ear will spot in a few places.

“Virtuostic Vendetta” sees a guitarist in Joe Stump who survived the changed musical landscapes of the 1990’s with his career and reputation intact and sees Joe 16 years on from his debut album, “Guitar Dominance,” in the strongest shape yet.

Originally picking up the guitar at age 10, Joe didn’t get serious until he was 13 with Jimi Hendrix being his initial main influence. On his early days Joe comments, “ I played a little when I was 10 but then stopped and picked it up again when I was like 13. Listening to Jimi is what got me hooked. My first guitar was an SG copy from Sam Ash (I grew up in New York) .Then a year later I got a brand new 1974 Fender Stratocaster, black with a maple neck and big tilted headstock, just like Blackmore’s on ‘Made in Japan’. I loved that guitar, and I was lucky my parents were very supportive of my musical endeavors when I was young ”.

The Hendrix and Blackmore influences were ones that would stick with Joe to this day but it wasn’t long before a new breed of player was getting heavy rotation on Joe’s turntable. “ I discovered Al DiMeola and became obsessed with the ‘Elegant Gypsy’ and ‘Casino’ records and the rest of Al’s heavy electric period. The first time I heard him play it was so amazingly fast that I was blown away (you’ve got to remember that was like 1979-1980). After that I started my Gary Moore obsession. I loved his early hard rock /metal records (‘Corridors of Power’, ‘Victims of the Future’, and ‘We Want Moore’). So his stuff and Uli Jon Roth’s work with the Scorpion became the next area of “must learn” material ” . At this time Joe enrolled as a student at Berklee College Of Music in 1979 and completing his degree in 1982.

But elsewhere a player making small headlines in American guitar press soon caught Joe’s attention – Yngwie Malmsteen, “ I first read about him in the spotlight section of Guitar Player Magazine. All of his influences were the same as mine, so later when the Steeler and Alcatrazz records came

out, I learned almost every solo on those. Then I got the ‘Rising Force’ record before it came out in the states when it was a Japanese import. That record had a massive impact on my playing. But Yngwie, Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Schenker, Uli, and Hendrix… rarely does a day go by without me listening to at least one of my favorite guys ”.

During the same time Joe started listening to a lot of

classical music, hearing the way his favorite players used this influence and incorporating

into his own style. When asked for his classical favorites Joe replies, “ Johann Sebastian Bach, Vivaldi, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini, etc… mostly stuff from the Baroque and Romantic periods ”.

The mid 80’ saw Joe being part of rock/ metal act Trash Broadway. The band signed a deal with Torrid Records (NY based indie label) and in addition to the band album Joe planned to do a solo record with the same label. Then Trash Broadway broke up after their self titled debut leaving Joe to concentrate on his solo career with the aim, “ To make records with killer playing, be in the guitar magazines I read all the time, and enjoy all the things that come with that modest level of success. Then as I started to make my solo records I really found my niche as far as what I do ”.

This niche led to a deal with Leviathan Records, the label run by fellow guitarist David Chastain and led to a

flurry of instrumental releases. With the onset of grunge in 1991 the timing of Joe’s debut “Guitar Dominance” perhaps couldn’t have been seen as worse for a neo-classical influenced instrumental album, “ The press

Page 18: The Lakehouse Inn The Lakehouse Inn - North Coast Voice 9-23.pdf · Edger Allan Poe, the man, perhaps to gain insight in the darkness of his stories. He was born Edgar Poe in Boston,

thought I was nuts making this kind of record back then, outdated and unfashionable. But trends come and go and I’m still here shredding and haven’t let up one bit ” . Sales were good for the album and its follow up, 1993’s “Night Of The Living Shred” saw the press starting to come on Joe’s side with Guitar World magazine calling the album “ the best neo-classical guitar record since Yngwie’s groundbreaking 1984 debut Rising Force ” . The same year Joe joined the faculty at Berklee becoming head of metal guitar. Students over the years include guitarists of Firewind, Anthrax, Killswitch Engage and Diecast.

1996 saw “Supersonic Shred Machine” released with more positive press and the album still ranks highly with fans and Joe himself. The same year also saw the debut from a new band ‘Joe Stump’s Reign Of Terror’ with the album “Lighting The Sky” getting release in North America, Europe and Asia. 1998 saw another instrumental offering in “Rapid Fire Rondo” before the dawn of the new millennium heralded another Reign Of Terror release in 1999’s “Second Coming”. In the finest tradition of Blackmore and Malmsteen a new singer was hired, tongue firmly in cheek Joe recalls, “ Following in my hero’s footsteps, it was a new record so it needed a new singer of course (laughs). I wanted this disc to be a bit more retro, more of a Deep Purple/Rainbow type of thing and little less on the speed

metal side. And with Brian Troch’s raspy bluesier voice I think I managed just that ” .

2001 marked Joe’s second decade of recorded output with the solo offering “2001:

A Shred Odyssey” a collection of rare demo material and live recordings long demanded by fans as well as another Reign Of Terror album “Sacred Ground” which would prove to be a breakthrough for the band. This third Reign Of Terror release was to be the most successful yet, featuring yet another new vocalist in former Loudness/Yngwie Malmsteen singer Mike Vescera as well as the addition of the keyboard wizardry of another Malmsteen cohort in Mats Olausson- finally stability was found in the band camp. “ With the addition of Mike’s killer “Dio on steroids”

voice and the keyboard genius of Mats, this certainly took the status of the band up a few notches. I decided that “Sacred Ground” should be more of a band oriented effort with some of the solo sections be a little bit shorter and the music having more of that

commercial Euro-metal influence. The production of the record was also slicker and smoother sounding ” . The album gained more positive reviews and also saw major distribution in European territories

2003’s solo album “Armed & Ready” saw the end of an era with Leviathan records in fine style whilst another Reign Of Terror album, the heavier “Conquer & Divide” saw joint release through Leviathan in the US and Lion Music in

Europe.

Returning in 2004 with renewed vigor for “Speed Metal Messiah” released on Lion Music, this sixth solo instrumental album

saw Joe raise his standards in every department with a stronger production and 14 inspired tracks that showcase Joe’s guitar skills showing no sign of diminishing in his second decade. And once again an album title that, by some, was seen as pompous, on his titles Joe explains, “ All of my solo records have to have the pompous title, but of course that’s a tongue in cheek kind of thing. Some guys will see the title and think I’m some arrogant prick, but it’s all in good fun. While I’m very dedicated to the instrument, I certainly don’t take myself that seriously .”

Joe then got an offer from Magic Circle Music to join a new power metal band called Holy Hell. This new gig saw Joe play to large audiences with Manowar and Rhadsody Of Fire playing big venues in Europe in addition to some huge outdoor metal festivals with them. Joe also saw a hoard of instructional and live DVD’s released through Shred Academy, giving fans worldwide the chance to get a lesson from Joe in his inimitable style.

Joe Stump will headline the party at The Cove Nite Club in Geneva on the Lake Oct 2 nd with Devolution, Gutterboy, Sacred Thirteen, and Megalodon. And at The Phantasy in Lakewood on Oct 3 rd with Dark Arena, Gutterboy, Megalodon, MSOD, The Devize and more. Special meet and greet both nights.

9 Focus • PG13 • 79 min No it’s not DISTRICT 9, the Peter Jackson epic, it’s the other one. The latest one. You know, the one that looks like Tim Burton produced it. Oh, wait. He actually did. In medieval days you had to be a king to get some salt and now it’s omnipresent. These days computer generated imagery or CGI is everywhere. In both cases somebody needs to be an artist or a chef to make the end result really good. In the case of 9 Shane Acker is an artist and a damn good one. 9 is some of the most compelling CGI work I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot. I really wish he were as good at storytelling. This film is actually an expanded version of the similar short feature he did in 2005, and it seems like they took the short plot and stretched it out a little longer than necessary. Oh it isn’t even that

long at under an hour and a half, but the story is spread pretty thin over the impressive cinematic bread.

Right off the bat you’ll notice a slight resemblance to last year’s CORALINE (another Burton project), an out of the ordinary CGI flick from last year. This time it’s a sci fi morality play that rehashes the age-old theme of man against the machine. 9 himself is a tiny humanoid robot with the soul of a human “living” in a post apocalyptic earth. A war between mankind and the machines they invented to keep themselves free and prosperous has reduced the planet to rubble. He and 8 others (1,2,3 etc.) find a relic that will fall into the hands of the evil master robot. It is not unlike STAR TREK’s V Ger, in its prime goal, which is to absorb the life force of every other creature. The action and scenery are stunning as 9 and his pals try to recover the mystic relic, but nothing else rises above the banal. There’s a whole lot of moralizing as a weak and corrupt old leader admonishes the impetuous 9 to stop asking so many questions and to stop fighting for what’s right and such. We get it. The animated battles and adventure almost get tiresome as the languid script bogs it down. The cast is impressive though none of the voices are particularly outstanding. Christopher Plummer, Elijah Wood, Martin Landau, Jennifer Connolly are fine actors, but a film like this need more striking characterizations.

It could well be that 9 should have stayed a short feature.

Extract Miramax • R • 90 min From BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, to KING OF THE HILL to OFFICE SPACE you have to admit that Mike Judge has a pretty sharp eye for human nature. While B and B’s outrageous situations were hilarious in the groundbreaking cartoon series it’s pretty clear to see that these slackers were assembled from pieces/parts of real kids. Anybody who ever had a straight job in an office or restaurant sees the reality beneath the comedy in OFFICE SPACE. The same thing holds true with EXTRACT. Judge’s gimlet eye is trained on a mundane place stocked with characters that seem familiar to us. Then he fits it all into a bizarre comedy. This one’s about Joel, (Jason Bateman) a regular guy, who owns a small company that

makes flavoring extracts. His partner (J K Simmons) is one of those condescending jerks we’ve all worked for and his employees are a potpourri of slackers, complainers, bigots, self proclaimed big shots, and regular mugs that we’ve all worked beside. As it turns out Joel’s marriage is in a rut. In fact he’s frustrated at the, uh, lack of intimacy. That’s when a remarkably hot, and apparently available temp (Mila Kunis) shows up for work. The downside is that she’s a con artist and a damn good one. Now Joel’s best friend and spiritual advisor (Ben Affleck) is one of those pals wives just hate. His advice for just about every marital woe is to go out and get laid and Cindy the temp looks like the prime target. Unfortunately Joel feels guilty so he hires a young stud to seduce his wife. If she goes for it, well, no harm no foul, right? Ahh not really. Anyway I’d hate to spoil the fun as this plot takes a lot of unexpected turns. Remember that Judge isn’t the kind of guy to file the rough edges off the comedy so be prepared for a few “Man I wasn’t expecting that” moments. I don’t often like black comedy but this one is just light enough to be appealing. You’ll end up liking almost all the characters, though rocker Gene Simmons as

a ruthless PI attorney is a pretty loathsome dude. It’s a little shaggy around the edges with a decidedly indie look and feel, but EXTRACT is different and funny enough to take a chance on.

W hen Denny Sanders turned the WMMS program director reigns over to me, my first order of business was to hire my replacement as music director. It was September, 1973. We were going into a four-week ARB ratings survey period from mid-October to mid-November and we needed someone in that position fast.

It went to Donna Halper. I hired her over the phone, without a face-to-face meeting. Though Donna worked in Boston at the same time Denny and I did at various stations, we had never met.

Donna had been music director of a daytime folk-rock oriented format (a precursor to the Adult Album Alternative format) on WCAS-AM , a station licensed to Cambridge, Mass . We heard that she had good and somewhat eclectic – outside the norm – connections in the music industry.

Among her assets were the Canadian contacts she made while at WCAS , which was the first station in the U.S. to play singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn . Other Canadian l abels also started sending Donna material, hoping the exposure might to lead to deals with U.S. labels when she moved to WMMS, and to broaden it to rock and pop.

One of those contacts, Bob Roper of A&M Records Canada , which was run independent of the U.S. label , sent her the debut album of a young band named Rush , recorded for a small independent Canadian label, Moon Records . Donna brought it up in one of our music meetings, where she’d weed through the week’s new releases and resubmit previously released material that, for one reason or another, we had held off on adding.

The Rush album proved to be fresh power-rock our nighttime audience couldn’t get enough of. And since we were building WMMS from the evenings up (whereas most stations secure their

morning drive show first). Donna wanted to do Bob Roper a favor. A&M Canada had passed on signing Rush , but Roper was hoping to establish a stronger relationship with the band’s Canadian managers, knowing they would eventually deliver an artist his superiors admired.

We added the album and decided to concentrate on a track called “ Working Man, ” instead of the preferred priority track, “In the Mood .” “Working Man” was fist-punching blue-collar rock and roll. It went into our new release bin that night. When Denny played it on his show,

the phones went wild with immediate and unexpected reaction. Surprisingly, some listeners were convinced that it was a new Led Zeppelin track though I never heard the similitude.

Denny called me at home, amazed at the size of the reaction and

that most callers were convinced Rush was Zeppelin. I had a flashback to spring, 1967 when Mel Phillips , program director of Boston’s WRKO convinced listeners that the Bee Gees “New York Mining Disaster” could be the Beatles under a pseudonym. WRKO never said they were the Beatles, they just didn’t say they weren’t.

Now, we had to ride Rush out. I briefed Donna the next morning on her success in unearthing the kind of album and artist we were looking for, one the top 40 stations likeÊ WIXY ,

WGCL , WNCR and WLYT couldn’t deal with. We were beginning to build our “exclusive to WMMS ” arsenal.

“Well, of course,” Donna said. “Why should you be surprised? Isn’t that why you hired me? I would have done the same exact thing you did anyway.”

Despite her nonchalance, Donna was thrilled. She immediately phoned Roper, who insisted she call Rush’s management. They needed to hear the report from the source, and to know they needed to ship Canadian stock to the Cleveland record stores immediately. Within two weeks, the Rush album became the city’s fastest selling import – and even outsold many current hit rock U.S. albums that were out at the time. Soon afterward, the band played a date at the Allen . In the liner notes on the American version , which was released on Mercury Records , they thanked Donna and WMMS.

A few months later Donna resigned as

WMMS music director to join Mercury Records .

Sit yourself down West, and Learn Something from the Girls

One of my favorite country artists had a taste of what NOT to do when you grow up: to act like a spoiled brat. Taylor Swift has never shown anything reminiscent of spoiled or for that matter rude. Mama taught her well. She is what star power should be about, setting the bar high in role modeling, humble and kind. Kanye West can learn something from Miss Country Music Mega-Success. In a narcissist’s world, one can break the rules because they weren’t meant for them

anyway, oh yes, narcissists don’t follow the same rules as the rest of us, they can react impulsively and suck the beaming white light out of another human being, in true vampire protocol. The

self- absorbed will take what they want, when they want it, even hurting someone in the way. It’s called entitlement and there is no place for that kind of

behavior on television or in this column. I suppose, with the era long gone of prime time manners, it is simply wishful thinking to expect good old American

values to magically come back. Sure all stage stars are vulnerable to this documented DSM-IV mental disorder, but if you keep your feet on the ground, (perhaps in your seat) and remember there IS something mighty bigger out there than you, perhaps impulsive stunts, mimicking a kindergarten child grabbing a toy away from a classmate, wouldn’t happen.

I have issues with people that use Jesus’s name in their music but can’t remember what he was all about. There’s a lot of loafing going on in the world and there are better paths to take. Come on Kanye, make your move when the paparazzi surround you at the MTV after party, but don’t take an award and speech away from Swift at her moment in front of millions of fans, live on television; that’s just absurd. It’s just not right and she didn’t deserve that. New York Times writer, David Brooks, put it this way, “I was grievously afflicted when Kanye West ruined her big moment the other night. My fear is this trauma will send Ms. Swift into the slough of despond and her next album will make Alanis Morissette seem like a trip to Disney World. My secondary fear is that this moment will mark a turning point in World History, like the battle of Gettysburg, the defeat of the Spanish Armada or when Hot Lips became sympathetic on “M*A*S*H.” I’ve really begun to get quite glum about the future of the republic.” Nevertheless, fellow sista, Beyonce, had the couth and recovery know-how to repair her fellow musical comrade’s faux pas, as she asked Taylor to share in her acceptance speech. Yes, Kanye, you can learn something from the girls here. But like all good narcissists, you

By Luthier Patrick Podpadec

W ere back again! I’ve been busy again the past few weeks with a variety of different repairs. One was removing a bridge from an older Martin guitar. Someone had tried to lower the action by removing wood from the top of the bridge so that the saddle would protrude up higher out of the slot so that there would be some break angle on the strings where they enter the holes for the bridge pins. You need this angle for the pressure that is needed so that the strings don’t slide around and your guitar does not sound all “flappy” and such. By doing this all you’re doing is causing more problems and destroying the bridge. So to remove the bridge I placed an iron directly on top of it to heat it up. I wasn’t worried about scorching the wood because I had to build a new bridge anyway. I’m careful not to over heat it because I don’t want to cause any damage to the surrounding finish and also loosen any structural braces that are directly underneath that area of the top. After about ten minutes of monitoring the heat I place a small thin spatula type knife between the bridge and the iron for just a few minutes to heat it up some to. I then carefully start to work it under a corner of the bridge. It takes a little patience but with the right amount of heat you can usually wiggle a little and maybe stop to apply some more heat and gently work your way under the bridge. It is important that you don’t dig into the fibers of the soft spruce wood under the hardwood bridge. (In this case it happen to be Brazilian rosewood). I was able to successfully remove the old bridge with just a small sliver of spruce that splintered off during the removal. I was able to slice it off the bridge and glue it right back down in its’ proper place. The next step is to replace the bridge with similar wood as to keep up its’ historical value. I might not be so picky if it was a garage sale special, but being that it was a “51 Martin” I decided to

replace it with some special stock of Brazilian rosewood that I’ve been saving for just such an occasion. What I did so that I could guarantee that the new bridge was exactly like the old one was to lightly glue the old one down to a blank piece of wood and drill down through the holes with a 3/16th drill bit all the way through the new blank assuring that the string spacing will be the same as the old one. I then copied the shape by cutting the majority

of it on my band saw and the remainder was cleaned up with my belt sander. I then separate the old bridge from the blank and begin to contour the top of

the bridge to match the old. This takes time and

patience and a good eye for detail. You want it to look like a Martin Bridge. There are very slight variations in contour and its’ important to get it right. I then get the top ready for gluing the

bridge back down. I always scrape down the rough area where the bridge was attached. I use a very sharp ¾’ chisel to do this, being careful not to scrape outside of the glue line. After this is cleaned up I check to make sure that everything lines up the way it is supposed to. You have to be very careful not to “shift” the bridge when you glue it back down. There are many different clamping methods that I have used in the past to ensure the bridge gets properly glued. Over the years I’ve been able to work it down to just three clamps. This enables me to easily remove any excess glue that seeps out while pressure is being applied. There could easily be a whole article on the clamping procedure alone, but we will save that for a future reading. Thanks so much for your time and please “Stay in Tune”

THANKS! Patrick from Wood-n-Strings

From a dusty country road with 98.3 The BULL’s Roger McCoy…

A fast track career is an understatement when we talk about the new Country group Gloriana. They came together about eighteen months ago and are already out on tour

with Taylor Swift and have one of the fastest moving country albums this year. You may say, “Yeah….some people just get all the breaks!” But as a radio program director who has been kickin around country music his entire life I can tell you that Gloriana made it big because of their talents.

Earlier this year they released “Wild at Heart” which charged up the country charts at warp speed. It was hard not to love the country tub thumping sound of their freshman single. Honestly, I spun it in my car for weeks while watching people laugh at me as I played air guitar to it at the traffic lights. However, a hit single for a new group can also be the kiss of death. If your next single doesn’t gain as much popularity radio station managers will drop you from their play lists within days if not minutes in some cases.

So I am happy to say that Gloriana’s latest single, “How Far Do You Wanna Go” has every one of my neighbors laughing at me again while I sit at the traffic light playing the meanest air guitar you have ever seen to Gloriana’s latest single. Take some time to check out Gloriana’s “How Far Do You Wanna Go” at www.gloriana.com or keep listening to More Country Guaranteed! 98.3 The BULL to hear it for yourself.

The Wedding Smeller!

X Have you ever done something that made you feel like total crap? I mean has there ever been a time where, inadvertently, you caused so such turmoil you wish that it had never happened?

Well I’ve just had one of those moments recently where I was really shitty to some neighbors and I’m really feeling like a total piece of crap about it all… well just for a moment… anyways I do want to apologize!

A couple of weeks ago I get an excited yet frantic phone call from my long time really hot lady friend, “Jodeye”, who lives in South Carolina now, telling me that she and her long time boy friend finally decided to get married in two weeks, and wanted to make sure that I would be able to attend.

Jodeye was determined to have me there, so she tells me that she found me a ride and I wouldn’t have to pay for anything… just get my ass down there pronto!

It turns out that the ride she found me was with her 60 year old OCD laden father “Joel”, which I’ve only talked to a couple of times and hadn’t a clue that he was the king of OCD prior to all this!

In the 14 hours it took to get there I was learning hour by hour that OCD, which stands for “obsessive-compulsive disorder”, really should stand for “Occasionally Can Decide”!

Heh-heh, don’t get me wrong, Joel is a hell of a nice guy and once I figured out that he was riddled with OCD the rest of the trip turned out to be kind of fun!

Anyways he drove us there and had already set us up in a motel room… Econolodge room 207.

The night we got there we proceeded to

get trashed downtown North Augusta with the wedding party at a couple of the 20+ pubs that line the street.

Yeehaw my kind of place!

So the day before the wedding was spent setting things up… hangover style… and as with planning for any wedding, anything that could go wrong was going wrong!

The day of the wedding I’m there doing some finishing touches and I get a call from Joel telling me that one hour before the wedding we had just gotten kicked out of our room… room 207!

What the… “Joel… you didn’t complain about the ice machine again did you?” I asked, “No” he replied “they said our toilet was leaking into the room below, room 107, and we need to move out… like now!”

After calming down he was able to get the management to let him shower as long as he promised not to use the toilet! I immediately started wondering, how did they know it was the toilet leaking and not the shower or sink? I mean water is water right?

Then it dawned on me that I spent most of the morning hours with a belly ache filling the toilet bowl several times with a foul smelling liquid that any scientist would swear couldn’t be of human origin!

This unavoidable disgusting substance was gagging me and making my eyes water so I knew that if that revolting gaseous stench reached the humans below there could be unavoidable casualties!

Sorry about that! Heh-heh!
