THE KNIGHTLY NEWS Knights of Columbus, St Joseph Council 4586 Serving St Dennis Parish, Madison WI Charity and Fraternity are Our Most Important Products Published Monthly for Members, Family and Friends Grand Knight: Paul Pierce 212-0659 e-mail: [email protected] Steve Bose, Editor 335-8070; e-mail: [email protected] Issue: October 2020 Hello Brother Knights and Families. Hello Brother Knights and Families. As always, I hope everyone is doing well and remain healthy. I want to share the experience from our last month’s social meeting. It was so nice to see the people I consider a part of my life and family of St. Dennis. We all took a little something to eat and share prays and experiences over the last couple of months. We have a few pictures that will have to go into our scrap books. The next social meeting this month will be catered by brother Knight Jim Martine cater a meal for us it is proposed as a roast beef dinner. We figured that $10/person will cover Jim’s cost to cater our meal. Please let me know if you would be coming and how many meals I should order. We will be able to social distance in the parish center. The meals will be served to you to assure food safety, which is what Cathy and I do for a living. Hope I do not jinks myself. The social meeting will start with a rosary at 6:00 pm. followed by the social. We will practice strict social distancing and have masks and hand sanitizer for everyone’s use. You will also note later in this newsletter we will be doing a fundraiser for St. Dennis in a couple of weeks. It will be a brat stand that we will do with serve through a drive through. It hard to believe but all of our normals are being changed to meet the new standards. If you are not comfortable with our plans for this social, please know that I have no expectation that everyone will attend. Like last time it will be a short meeting. Lastly, I want to focus on the final three moments Jesus shared with us on his way to Calvary. Jesus spoke from his crucifixion to the moment of his death. Here is a final point to meditate regarding Jesus’ suffering and death as we contemplate the various sufferings we experience in our own lives. “I thirst.” (John 19:28) As his final moments approach, Jesus asks for something to drink. Jesus’ thirst was another sign of his human need. Do I see Jesus in those around me who suffer hunger, thirst, homeless, sickness or other deprivations? Do I “hunger and thirst for righteousness,” as Jesus described in the Beatitudes? Do I perform works of mercy for those who suffer physically or spiritually? “It is finished.” (John 19:30) With his earthly mission accomplished, having sacrificed his very self for the sins of humanity, Jesus acknowledges the end is near. Do I stay focused on my true vocation — as a child of God and in the state of life to which God called me? Do I practice careful and humble discernment throughout my life so that I stay true to the sacred purpose that God has for my life? What unfinished business do I have ahead of me that I must accomplish as a faithful disciple of Christ before my time on earth comes to an end? “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit!” (Luke 23:46) With his last breath, Jesus places himself completely in the hands of his loving Father. Do I keep myself in a state of grace, so that I am always prepared for the possibility of death? Do I avail myself of the sacraments of the Church and maintain a committed life of daily prayer so that I am ready to meet God? If I were to die today, right now, am I ready to commend my spirit to the hands of our heavenly Father? God bless you and your families. Vivat Jesus! Paul Pierce Happy October Birthdays!
