What's brewing when two favorites; poetryand fairy tales;are turned (literally) on their heads? It's a revolutionary recipe: aninfectious new genre of poetry and alovably modern take on classic stories.First, read the poems forward, then reverse
the lines and read again to give familiar tales a delicious new spin.
Emma’s Poem: The Voice of the Statue of Libe
J 591.7 JEN
Growing up in a wealthy Jewish American family inthe late nineteenth century, Emma Lazarus “only
knew people / who had plenty of everything.” But in
New York’s harbor, she saw impoverished new
immigrants, tired and hungry, sad and sick, manyhaving fled persecution, and she defied both the
prevailing view that women should keep quiet and twidespread prejudice that immigrants would “ruin t
country.”
After challenging an evil dragon, rescuing abeautiful princess and saving your in-laws, what’s
an ogre to do? Well if you’re Shrek you suddenly
wind up a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, the reluctantogre agrees to autograph pitch forks. Shrek istricked into signing a pact with the smooth-talkingdealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly findshimself in an alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is kingand Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it's upto Shrek to undo all of Rumpelstiltskin's mischief in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring hisworld and reclaiming his one True Love and
family.
