ABSTRACT

Sa’idah, Lilis. 2013. “The Judgment of people’s Character in the Texts in

English Textbooks Grade X”. Skripsi. English Education Department.

Key Words: Judgment, Texts, Textbook

Judgment is evaluating people’s character. It can be realized through

Adverbial, Noun, Adjective and Verb.Judgment refers to the act of judging

people’s character. White (2001) describe that the term “judgment” as a system of

Attitudinal positioning, is shaped by the particular culture and ideological

situation in which it operates. So there is always possibility that the same event

will receive different judgments, according to ideological position of the person

making those judgments.

The objectives of this research are to find out the types of judgment of

people’s character and to describe the interpretations of types of judgment of

people’s character used in texts in English textbooks grade X.

Design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. It is used to

unfold the types of judgment of people’s character and the interpretations of types

of judgment of people’s character in the texts in English texts grade X. The result

of this research shows that all types of judgment of people’s character used in all

six texts selected that written in three English textbooks. There are 119 judgments

which consists of (93) positive judgments and (26) negative judgments. First

judgement is social esteem which is divided into three categories; normality (32

positive) and (2 negative), tenacity (22 positive) and (14 negative), and capacity

(18 positive) and (2 negative). Nevertheless, the second type of judgment is social

sanction; first is veracity (17 positive) and (2 negative), propriety (4 positive) and

(4 negative). The mostly judgment used is positive judgment especially in social

esteem in the form of normality.

The writer interprets that texts are appropriate for students to build up their

character through textbooks unconciously while they are learning. Although there

are some negative judgements in each text, but the term which the compiler uses

is not too crude in judging someone. Thus, both of the judgments either positive

or negative will influence students’ character. It does not mean that negative

judgements always have negative meaning and have bad impact to the students.

The results of the research show that positive or negative judgments are

good resourches for English teachers to build up students’ character, that is why

the writer suggests to the teachers to consider the texts which have positive or

negative judgments in the teaching and learning process. It is suggested to the

future researchers to continue and develop this research in a deeper analysis with

the other theories. They can learn more about the whole of appraisal system not

only from the attitude especially in judgment people’s character but also from

others as amplification and source.

ABSTRAKSI

Sa’idah, Lilis. 2013. “The Judgment of People’s Character in the Texts in

English Textbooks Grade X”. Skripsi. Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa

Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muria Kudus.

Dosen Pembimbing: (I) Dr. H. A. Hilal Madjdi, M.Pd. (II) Fitri Budi

Suryani, S.S. M.Pd.

people’s character-nya.

Judgement yang pertama yaitu social esteem yang terbagi menjadi tiga kategori;

normality (32 positif) dan (2 negatif), tenacity (22 positif) dan (14 negatif), dan

capacity (18 positif) and (2 negatif).
