President’s Update Jim Sambold, JANE President

Moving Forward to 2016

The last two years seem a blur, and I find myself asking the question, “Has it really been two years?” The reality of it is that they have been two incredible years, filled with tremendous success in terms of activities, club records for attendance, and many, many great memories.

This club has been extremely successful, and in our suc-cess set a benchmark for all other clubs, not only for the number and types of events, but for the quality and level of membership participation. This success has been built

with the dedication of our membership, all the while exhibiting such a high level of teamwork that we could not have done anything but succeed.

Normally, this would have been the closing to my term as President. However, thanks to the support of the Board, the Nomination Committee, and the vote of the membership, I welcome the opportunity to continue with the responsibilities for the next year. I also want to extend my thanks to the Nomination Committee, headed by Chuck Centore, along with Carl Hanson and Dennis Eklof, for their tireless efforts in assembling the list of candidates to complete the Board of Directors for 2016. New to next year’s Board will be Jane Murray, also our Concours Chair for 2016, and Rich Kosinski and Dennis Eklof will be returning for the start of new three-year terms. I would also like to welcome Aldo Cipriano back to the Board, as he will be replacing Alex Karys.

The biggest change to the Board will be for the position of Vice President of Membership, as Howard Kalet will be assuming the role starting in 2016. Ed Avis has served for the last four years as VP of Membership for the club as well as a Membership role on a national level for JCNA. Ed’s dedication and quick response has enabled the club to maintain a path of growth far better than any other club. I welcome Howard as he as-sumes the responsibilities, and I know he will continue with the same attention and dedication to growing and maintaining our club as the largest in JCNA.

Our Holiday Party was once again a tremendous success, with many, many thanks to Crin and Jim Coull for all their efforts. They not only put together a fabulous meal with the Vesper Country Club, but also coordinated the 65 people signed up to take advantage of the libations, storytelling, and Yankee Swap. Dan and Kelly Gauthier, from David’s House, attended as honored guests and received the club’s donation of $2,500 to help continue the wonderful work they do for those in need.

This donation is made possible not only by the hard work and dedication of our members, but also from the tremendous support from our sponsors. On behalf of the club membership, I would like to thank Tony Lee and the folks at SNG Barrett, Brian Donovan and Donovan Motorcars, Dean Cusano and Motorcars Inc., and Margaret Caruolo as our returning annual sponsors. New this year we are extremely grateful for the support from Thompson Drivers Club for their Slalom sponsorship, and especially Jaguar Peabody as a brand new exclusive major sponsor for our Concours and our Myopia Hunt Polo event, as well as cover sponsor and advertiser for the Coventry Cat. I ask that as you consider any future purchases for vehicles, parts, and/or service, please place our sponsors at the top of your list for consideration, as without their support our club would not enjoy the level of success that we have.

In reflecting over the last 12 months, I am reminded of the great friends we have lost, starting in February with Bruce McGeoch. Bruce was a member for only a short time, but was ready, willing, and able to jump in wherever assistance was required, especially at the JCNA AGM in Boston. In mid-year we lost our great friend

Ray O’Brien. Ray was a Past President, Concours Judge, Board Member, and Jaguar collector. Always ready with a joke, Ray brought a valuable friendship to everyone in the club. In August, another long-time member, Bob Alexander, passed unexpect-edly. Bob was one of the first people I was fortunate to get to know when I joined JANE in 1986. Bob’s love of Jaguar, and in particular the Mark 2, made him a valuable resource as well as a great friend. We will miss them all.

As the Christmas holidays approach, I also ask that you keep Al Zanengo in your thoughts and prayers while he is dealing with some very serious health concerns. Al served as our Slalom Chair for several years and helped bring both our spring and fall events to an even higher level through his hard work and dedication. We miss having him in attendance at our other club events and wish him all the best as he navigates his difficulties. I ask as many of you as possible to take a few minutes from your daily grind and make a phone call and just chat with Al about things Jaguar. I know he would appreciate hearing from you.

In closing out this year, there are so many remaining people to thank for the club’s success that I don’t think the editor will give me that much room. Next year will be here in the blink of an eye, and we will start again with some great new events, so keep your eyes open for these, as the Events Committee, led by our VP of Events, Dean Saluti, John Brady, and I will soon post the new calendar on the website. Oh, and speaking of the website, Dennis has completed another major revision, making it device-friendly for calendar and all things JANE. And one last final thank you goes out to Tracey Levasseur for continuing to produce a great newsletter, which is one of the building blocks of this amazing club.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy, and Prosperous New Year!

It’s with a mix of sadness and relief that I’m writing my last article as JANE Membership VP. I’ve truly enjoyed the job for the last four years and having the opportunity to work with the dedicated folks on the JANE Board of Directors. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know many of you better and learning more about your interests. I’m happy to report, however, that Howard Kalet will be taking over the job at the beginning of the New Year. I’d ask that all of you give Howard the same extraordinary level of support that I’ve enjoyed. While the Membership VP is responsible for maintaining liaison with JCNA, reporting membership numbers, processing renewals and new members, etc., it’s really through the efforts of you, the general membership,

that the club continues to thrive and grow.

While JANE has enjoyed “bragging rights” as the largest JCNA-affiliated club in North America for the last three years, our membership has declined slightly since 2014, and I’m sorry to say that according to the JCNA Master Roster, at present, at 287 members, we’re slightly behind the Sun Coast Jaguar Club of Florida in Tampa. Their recent growth is largely a result of the Jaguar incentive program for the purchase of new cars that brought many new members to the club through the local dealers. We’ll have to wait until the final year-end summary from JCNA for the “official” standings.

I can’t leave the job without one more pitch for everyone to renew their membership as soon as possible. Re-newals are good for the entire 2016 season, AND if you renew by December 31st you’ll receive a $5 discount. And remember – all current members who renew before December 31st will be entered in a drawing to win a refund of your basic membership ($60) for 2016! The winning name will be drawn at the JANE social meeting in January. You can renew online at the JANE website or with the form included in this issue.

NOTE: New JANE members who joined after October 1st (or if I’ve told you your membership is good through 2016) do NOT need to renew and are therefore not eligible for the refund. JANE Board members and Associate Members are also not eligible.

Please give these folks a hearty JANE welcome when you meet them!

""Hello JANE Members, "You may not have heard about the 20,000 square foot North East Motor Sports Museum to be built on the grounds of New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Rt. 106, Louden NH. Ground-breaking was September 25, 2015 and the Grand Opening is scheduled on the NASCAR weekend next September. "The goal of the museum is to find, preserve and display surviving examples of cars, motorcy-cles, artifacts and memorabilia used by drag racers, oval racers, road racers and hill climbers from every era of New England motor sports. "I have agreed to be on the museum Board and will focus on helping ensure Road Racing is well represented. "Jaguars of course were vital to the growth of early road racing and as JANE members you are potential links to helping us locate early cars, artifacts or memorabilia from early road racing pioneers. "You, or a family member, may even have participated in early road racing. If so I hope you will consider loaning or donating historic items to the museum or buying a Brick for the inside wall inscribed with a permanent remembrance of those efforts in road racing. ""Please check out the museum website http://www.nemsmuseum.com for information and online applications for Membership and the neat Buy a Brick program. Sincerely Frank Grimaldi "

Event Reports

JANE 2015 AGM & Holiday PartyBy Dennis Eklof, photos by Bill Richardson and Dennis Eklof

Once again JANE held its Annual General Meeting and Holiday Party at the beautiful Vesper Country Club in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, and as in all the past years we have chosen this venue, it was a lovely party. One thing that did stand out this year, we all had to dodge golf balls on the way into the club house – temperatures were in the mid-fifties. Except for con-cerns about mussed hairdos, we would have been top-down!

All told, some 64 people attended, and all seemed to have a fine time.

Of course, there was some business to attend to, as it is at this meeting that the officers and board members are elected for the following year. Many familiar faces will be tending to JANE business again for 2016, but some new faces as well.

Jim Sambold will continue for one more year as JANE’s President. Although normally limited by JANE bylaws to two consecutive terms, in this case Jim will be serving one additional year, as approved by the JANE Board of Directors.

Also returning are Dean Saluti, VP Events; Don Holden, Treasurer; Bonnie Getz, Secretary; Jane Murray, Concours Chair; Rich Kosinski, Slalom Chair; Tracey Levasseur, Coventry Cat Editor; and myself as webmaster.

New to the officer ranks is Howard Kalet as VP Membership. Howard is taking over from Ed Avis, who has had an outstanding five-year run of bringing and welcoming in new members. We thank Ed for the excellent work he has done in putting a warm and friendly face on our membership activities and helping JANE grow to its present mem-bership level. In recent years, Ed has become increasingly involved

in membership ac-tivities at the JCNA level, and we look forward to Ed’s con-tinued contribution to JANE members through his work at JCNA. Howard has been working with Ed to transition our membership activities over the last couple of months, and I am sure we won’t miss a beat with him in his new position.

Most of our Board of Directors continue as part of their three-year terms or through re-upping for another three-year term (Rich Kosinski and myself), but there are two new faces. Aldo Cipriano returns to the BOD after several years’ absence,

replacing Alex Karys, who has stepped down, and Jane Murray has accepted a three-year term on the Board.

Also on the business agenda was our annual donation to David’s House, an outstanding charitable organiza-tion JANE has supported for many years. There to receive the award were Dan and Kelly Gauthier.

But enough of business. This was also a party. The food was excellent, as usual, and the friendship, con-versation, and camaraderie (not to mention the Yankee Swap) kept everyone pleasantly occupied until nearly eight o’clock. Check out the photos for more about the event.

One last thing. We all owe a big Huzzah to Crin Coull, who has done a fabulous job of coordinating our Holi-day Party for the last five years. But Crin needs a break, and next year Diane Wells-Murphy will be taking the reins, and will, I am sure, do an equally fine job. Thanks for stepping up, Diane.

Jaguar Peabody Grand Re-Opening

By Brian McMahon

I attended the Jaguar/Land Rover Peabody Grand Re-Opening Party recently, and thought that Coventry Cat could use a few photos and the following commentary, especially since Jaguar Peabody (part of the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group) is a JANE sponsor.

Joining Jaguar Peabody’s re-opening party with hundreds of other customers, I met their management team and relayed JANE’s gratitude for their support, as well as talking up JANE with other Jaguar owners who enjoyed the festivities. When one wife re-marked negatively about another brand’s car club, I told them that JANE was a couples-friendly association, not a dozen guys in a basement rec room debating the merits of carburetors versus

mechanical fuel injection. The husband was interested enough that he took out his iPhone and I helped him locate the JANE website.

The dealership had suffered in a cobbled-together showroom and repair facility for the first year after Lyon-Waugh bought the Jaguar franchise and combined it with their Land Rover dealership in Peabody. The celebration of the new Jaguar/Land Rover franchise’s stylish and spacious new home was a won-derful event. Right from the start, I could see that Lyon-Waugh understood the Jaguar marque’s stunning style sense. As I strode up the red carpet at the entrance to the showroom, I was surprised to see what appeared to be a woman mannequin dressed in red suddenly come to life, striking a series of poses (photo at right). That’s cute - we’ve all seen something similar at Disney World. But as I drew closer, I had a Twilight Zone flash when I real-ized that the animatron was a real woman, only pretending to be a robot!

As part of the festivities, Lyon-Waugh presented raffle prizes to a lucky few. One visitor won a framed and autographed Rob Gronkowski photo, and another won a set of four passes to any Boston Bruins game this season. Cidalia Schwartz, Marketing Director of Lyon Waugh, was the MC. This party was a massive undertaking, requiring the simultaneous presence of all the Lyon-Waugh management and the mayor of Peabody, as well as ar-

ranging for catering, music and raffle prizes. That organizational feat alone is considerable, but she also displayed the stunning stylistic flair that really put the purr in the Leaper.

We also enjoyed the inevitable celebratory cake, and the performance of a talented jazz trio throughout the evening.
