1 ALPHA PHI EPSILON CHI CHAPTER THE IVY Spring 2012 Note From the President pg. Alpha Phi Epsilon Chi Website: www.cpalphaphi.com Chapter Advisor: Juliette Duke [email protected] President – Nina Nasre [email protected] Winter quarter was very successful for Alpha Phi, our chapter has accomplished so much including service, sisterhood, recruitment, leadership, and scholarship. Giving back by participating in philanthropic events and community service has been very rewarding, not only by fundraising for our own foundation, but others as well such as Aware, Awake, Alive. Community service projects in the SLO community, sisterhood activities like roller-skating and hiking Bishops Peak, and leadership training at executive board retreats and at our regional conference in Los Angeles, have been great accomplishments this quarter. We are also very excited to have recruited 5 amazing new women into our fraternity, making us the largest house on campus with 170 members! Our scholarship continues to get stronger, last quarter our average GPA was over a 3.0, and Alpha Phi has been above the all women’s average GPA for the last three quarters. Spring quarter is always a very exciting time for Alpha Phi. We are looking forward to our annual philanthropy event, Red Dress Gala, as well strengthening our bonds with others in the greek community by participating in Greek Week. Our chapter also has some great social events and sisterhood events planned. I am so excited for the upcoming quarter! Love and AOE, Nina Nasre, President

It was that time of year again; the time to welcome Alpha Phi dads to come spend some quality time with their daughters for the Annual Alpha Phi Dad’s Weekend. The weekend began with a warm welcome to Alpha Phi dads who participated in a friendly pick up game of softball on Saturday morning. Following the softball game, dads and daughters enjoyed a beautiful day in San Luis Obispo walking around downtown, checking out the Alpha Phi house, touring campus, and preparing for the weekend’s main event; a night of dinner and dancing. This year’s dinner was hosted at The Cliff’s Resort in Pismo Beach and helped recognize our PHInominal dads! A special thanks to all the Alpha Phi dad’s who made the weekend such a success this year and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Spring 2011 Newly Initiated Members As a great start to the year of 2012, the Epsilon Chi chapter of Alpha was more than excited to welcome five phi-nominal new members: Taylor Crump, Pheobe McHugh, Kate Walters, Kristen Woodward, and Michelle Woyshner! All members of the chapter came together to greet the new members on bid day, where the girls played get-to-know-you games and made festive ice cream sundaes. The new members were able to experience the true heart of Alpha Phi through big and little week where the girls were matched with their big sister, experiencing the first of many special bonds we feel as sisters. During one of the several days before initiation, many active members joined the new members at the pearl dinner, an annual tradition where the girls come together for a ceremony and eat a delicious dinner cooked by our wonderful chef, Corey. On March 4, the whole chapter was beyond thrilled to gather and initiate the new members into the sisterhood. This new member experience is something we, as members

Every 34 seconds a person in the United States dies from heart disease. For American Heart Month in February, the Epsilon Chi chapter of Alpha Phi had its annual Heart Booth in the University Union Plaza at Cal Poly. The lovely ladies of Alpha Phi passed out heart health facts and dark chocolate during the university's UU hour from 11am to 12pm. Many students stopped by the Heart Booth in support of heart health and, overall, our women were able to spread heart health awareness around Cal Poly's campus.

Alpha Phi spent Saturday March 3rd at Judson Terrace Homes meeting a group of lovely elderly ladies! Residents were lined up waiting for Alpha phi girls to give them a manicure, girls spent the afternoon painting ladies' nails and chatting. The women loved talking to their manicurist, and many learned about the lives of these women all while providing them with something they really enjoyed. All the Judson residents left with beautiful nails and Alpha Phi left with some

new friends!

On a sunny Saturday in March, Alpha Phi spent their afternoon at a sister twister helping out the Woods Humane Society Animal Shelter with the help from Alpha Eplison, Sigma Omega Nu, and Chi Delta Theta. At the shelter girls helped clean the dogs’ play area and help tidy up the cats’ area. Although the sun was beating down, the work was fun since all the girls in the various sororities bonded with one another, as well as have the chance to play with some of the shelter’s animals. It turned out to be a very rewarding and fun filled day that made the lives of the shelter employees easier as well as putting the smile on both the puppies and girls.

In February our Chapter’s Top Executive Board attended the annual Alpha Phi International Conference in Los Angeles. There we learned how to better do our jobs, about other chapters and what tools they utilize, and to network with other Alpha Phis. We had a spectacular experience; we met amazing girls from across the region that we probably never would have had the pleasure to be acquainted with otherwise. In the numerous training sessions we had throughout the weekend, we were able to learn techniques and ideas pertaining to our positions that other chapters utilized and found successful--which may help our chapter to thrive as well. The Alpha Phi conference not only gave us tips on how to be a better leaders, but also gave us valuable skills to take in to my career. With this amazing experience we had the pleasure to attend, we all plan on sharing what we learned with the rest of the chapter.
