A virgin design collaboration between a colour-shy client and one of Melbourne’s premier

interior designers resulted in a chic and uber sophisticated home for a family of three. Looking to update their home and add some warmth and character, the designer began work on creating this effortlessly relaxed family home. Known for her unique interpretation of colour and brave use of pattern Bergeron states “it took some time for the clients to become comfortable with using both in their own home”.

The project has run over two years and continues to evolve in a long term partnership between designer and client. Identifiably classic “DB”, the home is relaxed and inviting: features Diane is careful to achieve in all of her designs. Working with several existing pieces of art and furniture, Diane set about incorporating these into an overall look. Wanting a sophisticated aesthetic but incorporating vibrant colour, the designer began with a palette of deep charcoal set against coral and blues that seamlessly weave throughout the home.

The family room features classic architecture paired back with wooden floors, white bookcasing and a traditional fireplace central to the room’s design. Careful curation of old and new items, books and personal objects displayed in balanced groupings put the room at ease being both a feature and a backdrop. against an almost black self patterned sofa anchor the room with the help of the tonal geometric rug. Bergeron expertly introduces the mirrored coffee table and mercury glass lamps adding yet another layer of texture that contrasts with the natural floor boards and keeps the look refined.

The remainder of the home is similarly based on a neutral backdrop with colour and pattern part of the room rather than actually in it. Modern photographic pieces paired with taupe stripes dress less formal areas of the home giving them presence. Again in the dining room a calm and restful modern artwork simply framed hangs over the dining table. A patterned tablecloth and vibrant scatter cushions are the only accents in an otherwise pure and simple interior. Mismatched seating maintains the simplicity without being plain and enables ultimate flexibility in a cleverly customisable room.

Bedrooms are areas that Bergeron lets personality fly. Energising pops of patterned coral embellish the master bed in a stunning statement. Bright emeralds, blues and elegant chinoiserie set off the clam design fabric perfectly. The boy’s bedroom is a star player in the home with a modern take on red white and blue. Tiny houndstooth on the spread is overshadowed by the oversized prints and vintage number in a modern cluster wall. Simple lighting and vibrant stripes again layered over a neutral backdrop give a timeless solution to a child’s bedroom.

Classicism is key in this Melbourne home where accent colour prevails in an understated and sophisticated design. Bergeron continues to interpret a client’s aesthetic uniquely whilst maintaining her own refreshing and distinctive signature.
