The IUL MarketplaceThis article will be directed to those of you that may not be real familiar with this relatively new product. I hope to provide some insight into the product and offer upsome suggestions for sales opportunities. An indexed Universal Life product is basically atraditional UL product with the non-guaranteed assumptions linked to an index, which isusually the S&P, but can include other indices as well. These policies have a cap associated with them, which is generally in the 12-14% range, and offer a minimum guarantee, usually 1-2%.

Who’s out there? Right now, there are over 15 companies offering IUL products, many ofthem entering the market in the last year or so. Many other companies are exploring themarket as well. The initial product was introduced in the mid 90’s and the market hascontinuously grown. IULs offer up a good balance betweentraditional ULs and Variable ULs. They offer more cash accumulation than a traditionalUL and offer downside protection unlike a Variable product. It is estimated that IUL saleswill continue to increase steadily as more companies get into the fold and more producers learn about it.

Several different product features are now available as well. Whether your client is looking for a single premium option, survivorship, no-lapse guarantee, short term cashaccumulation or long term cash accumulation, they can all be served with an IUL product.These products are flexible and can be used in the same fashion as most traditional ULproducts.

Potential markets are numerous. We see a lot of business in the cash accumulation market, especially with the popularity of books like Missed Fortune 101, by Doug Andrew.Wealth transfer is another growing category now, especially with the single premiumproducts that offer simplified underwriting. Additionally, with the use of the No LapseGuarantee riders, some of these products offer the lowest rates out there with the addedbonus of good cash accumulation.

Which product or company is best for your client? Right now, we see two to three companies that stand out above the rest. Factors we look for in companies are; amountof time in the marketplace, product selection, company performance and product performance. You’ll want to keep up with

all the new and exciting changes.

I’m seeing new products roll out with some interesting crediting methods. In my conversations with our residentactuary, I’m finding out that these new crediting methodsjust offer another “twist.” The bottom line is; what’s easiestfor you, the agent, to explain to the client and for the clientto understand? I’m a firm believer that no matter how muchresearch is done, the experts will say day in and dayout….”regardless of the crediting method, they’ll all taketurns performing in the different market environments overa period of years……..” The dilemma is no longer a dilemma at that point. It all goes back to ease of explanation and understanding. Don’t get caught up in thehype that one crediting method is better than another.

Those of you that know me know that I’m extremely client focused. We’re seeing every state implement forms for suitability. Thiswill not only keep you honest, but also keep you out of trouble. And speaking of forms, please utilize your specific carrier’s website for current forms. I think I harp on this in every newsletter but it does save time, money and embarrassment. If you pulland use forms off your shelves that you haven’t used in 6-12 months I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll have to revisit yourclient to get signatures on a more up-to-date form. That extra trip to the see the client will cost you time, money, embarrassment AND in some cases delay your case from getting issued in a timely manner.

Because of the competitiveness of this business we’re seeing new programs roll out offering incentives to agents.
