The Frisbee first started when the Frisbie baking company, from Bridgeport CT, sold pies to college students around New England. After eating, the students would toss their empty pie plates around. In 1948, Walter Fredrick Morrison noticed the students playing like this. His father had invented the headlight, so he decided to make his own invention inspired by the plates being tossed. He made the Pluto Platter, being named after the popularity of flying saucers. In 1955, The Wham-O company saw Fred’s design and bought it from him. They then called it the Frisbee, because most college students still called it that.
