RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID) TAGS IoT is possible because digital devices ae connected and can share data using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags that transmit and store data wirelessly.

Tags used for tagging and tracking

HOW RFID WORKS

RFID tags contain an antenna for transmitting data and a memory chip for storing data.

RFID is a one-way system – from tag to scanner- that can work at distances of many feet.

Other uses: Loss prevention, ID badges, pet microchip, shipping tracking, smart passports and credit cards.

NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION (NRC)

NFC is a newer radio frequency technology that has more capabilities than RFIP.

NFC tags work with NFC readers on smartphones to support two-way communication – to and from an NFC device - for distances up to 10 centimeters or by touching two devices.

Uses: Digital wallets, contactless payment systems.

OTHER IOT DEVICES

Payment systems for transportation options (buses, subways or toll roads.

BAR CODES

Printed codes used in stores to identify items for pricing and inventory.

Each bar has a designated number value.

BARCODE READERS

Scans the barcode, converts it into numbers, and outputs the numbers into a database containing more information about the item (e.g., the price, the number on hand.)

QR CODES

Images containing square pattern blocks used on magazines, on packaging, on product tags, and in digital form on Web sites.

Unlike bar codes, QR codes are unique

READING (SCANNING) A QR CODE Barcodes and QR codes are both available on mobile devices. You can use a Smartphone to scan a QR code on a magazine, and connect to a Web site to get more information.

IOT TRACKING AND IDENTIFYING Barcodes and QR codes provide a way to identify and track the countless objects that make up the IoT.
