The Internet - Good or bad ? Throughout history mankind has created tools and technology that changed the
world. Are today’s any different in terms of impact on society? The early Stone Age started with man using hand held flint stones. It then
expanded as he learnt to attach them to sticks for use as spears, axes, knives, arrows and more. This age was overtaken by the Bronze Age which in turn was overtaken by the Iron Age and so on.
In later periods there was the invention of writing or script, followed by paper, followed by printing.
The industrial revolution ‘started’ with steam engines to pump out mines, which led to steam locomotives, then passenger trains and railways, and then the telegraph.
Now it is the microchip, programming, electronic storage and telecommunications that together make up The Internet.
At each step along the way there were winners and losers as well as those who for a whole variety of reasons opposed the changes and tried to stop them.
Also at each step came the need for adjustments in society and new regulations to govern the technology; Speed limits for roads, newspaper licenses, gun laws, drugs controls, etc.
The Internet - Good or bad ? List your thoughts on goodness and badness Debate what makes them good or bad and what controls or
regulations, if any, are needed to reduce the bad points. Here’s a starter sample:-
Good BadMakes life easier in terms of shopping for hard to find goods
‘Local’ shops lose business.
Entertaining and fact finding tools a-plenty.
Can spend hours ‘surfing the net’ and achieving little. i.e. time wasting.
Is easy to access from almost anywhere
Difficult to control, especially for parents.
etc etc

What is your MP doing? Report a crime to the police and ensure it is logged. Rate your hospital experience. Read records of public enquiries. Give opinions on many subjects AND get paid for them. Banks not giving a good return? Invest direct and triple it. Give aid direct. Bypass aid agencies and governments. Report that pot hole and track it to being fixed. Recycle unwanted goods easily. What services and tradesmen do my neighbours
recommend? Help the downtrodden by influencing foreign governments.
