The Intelligent Network
“The IN is a cash register.” --RZ
What is IN? The Intelligent Network (IN) is an “additional
network” built on the basis of the existing telecom network, which creates new services rapidly, effectively, flexibly and cost-effectively.
In Sun Cellular, the IN is in charge of all prepaid-related services

Main IN Functional Entities Service Switching Point (SSP) – responsible for
detecting special conditions during call processing that cause a query for instructions to be issued to the SCP.
Service Control & Data Unit (SCDU) Service Control Point (SCP) – stores the service
provider instructions and data that direct switch processing & provide call control.
Service Data Point (SDP) – stores IN subscriber data. Service Management Point (SMP) – performs
activities involved with service deployment, provisioning, control, monitoring & billing.
Other IN Elements Advanced Intelligent Peripheral (AIP) – houses
the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) Record Billing Interface (RBI) – contains CDRs
for billing & validation purposes. Voucher Center (VC) – stores scratch cards. Electronic Voucher Center (EVC) – special
wallet for Expressload (applies to Sun Cellular IN).
EVPN (Enhanced Virtual Private Network) GDR (Geographical Disaster Recovery)

Functions and Capabilities
CALL SUPERVISIONThe PPS service supervises calls according to the following: Checks to ensure the minimum credit is available to
make a call (i.e. if the credit is sufficient to establish a call according to the tariff). If not, the subscriber receives a fault announcement.
Real time supervision. The remaining credit is checked in real time during a call. The call is disconnected if the credit limit is reached
Functions and Capabilities
ACCOUNT PROFILEThe PPS service is based on a profile concept. This
enables the Service Provider to define a service adapted to specific market segments.
Each prepaid account has an account profile. The account profile contains parameters which are automatically set in the account at its creation and used at activation. These parameters are the default language, initial credit andactivity and inactivity durations. The account profile also contains information on the tariff scheme, warning thresholds and parameters for the handling of short messages and announcements. The account profile contains specificinformation for the screening and charging of fax/data calls.
Account profiles must be defined before any accounts are created.
Functions and Capabilities
SCRATCHCARDS
To refill their account using a scratch card bought from a retailer, the subscriber calls a special Voice access code from their mobile or third party phone, selects the option to recharge and enters the refill code found on the card after scratching. The amount on the card is transferred to the subscribers account and the active/inactive durations linked to the card are taken into account.
Subscriber can also refill/rechare their account by dialing a USSD access code together with the scratchcard pin.
Functions and CapabilitiesSCRATCH CARD PROFILE
The scratch card profile contains the characteristics of the scratch cards that belong to the same profile, i.e. credit amount, active/inactive durations of the refill and bonus amounts.
ACCOUNT LIFECYCLE
A Digitel Prepaid account moves through a series of lifecycle states starting with the production of a SIM card until the card is purged from the system.
Functions and CapabilitiesCHARGING PRINCIPLES
The charging of calls is based on the following criteria:
the rate plan — associated with the Account Profile and Account object. Characterises the pricing policy applied to one or more accounts.
the rate code — according to the time of day and day of call.
the charging class — according to the origin and the destination of the call.
the call duration
