I fully expect to maintain my role as your pastor, although I will be out of the pulpit for several Sundays after surgery. I’ll be leaning on our staff and deacons to fill in the gaps while I am recovering. I’m asking all of you to remain faithful in prayer and attendance. Just because I’ll need some time off doesn’t mean we can all take time off. Please, church, stay strong.
Lately as a congregation, we have faced one challenge after another. It seems like the enemy is working overtime. Makes me think something good is about to happen.
See you Sunday!

Sisters and Brothers,
Usually I write my newsletter column with the aim of getting you ready for the month ahead. Problem is, I really don’t know what to tell you about this September.
I’ve tried to be open with the congregation about my health concerns. In late August there were a few weeks when you were asking me questions about my health that I didn’t know how to answer. Please know that my family and I were then gathering and absorbing this information. There was never any intent to be evasive. It was simply important to me that I wait and inform you once all the important in-formation was known.
As most of you know, I participated in a routine early health screening—a colonoscopy—as is advised for anyone who turns 50. A colonoscopy involves a close look at the lower digestive system, the large intestine specifically. The pur-pose of the screening is to find any small problems before they become big problems. My colonoscopy revealed the presence of slow-growing cancerous tissue in my colon. I have had no symptoms at all—I feel strong and healthy—but the cancer is there nonetheless.
I have been blessed with great caregivers from the medical community. My doctor is very encouraged, and his outlook is encouraging to me. My cancer seems to have been de-tected at an early stage, and so it should be curable by re-moving that section of my colon. Don’t get me wrong—a diagnosis of cancer is never good news. But all signs indi-cate that my particular form of cancer is somewhat straightforward, and so is its treatment.
At the time of this writing, I expect to have surgery on Tues-day, September 1. It seems I am a good candidate for a lap-aroscopic operation, where the work is done through sever-al holes in my belly. Since I would be avoiding a larger inci-sion, my recovery time would be shortened. Once the affected area is out of my body, doctors can study it and suggest whatever follow-up may be needed. At the very least, for the rest of my life, I’ll be scheduled for colonosco-pies more frequently than the rest of you—and that will be fine by me.
I am sharing so much information with you, because I need my church just like you do. I am your pastor, but you are my church. I am asking you to pray for me. God has blessed me, and while I am not guaranteed a happy outcome, there is no reason to think I won’t have one. Still, my family and I will need your prayers.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE
One on One
What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “one on
one?” Most of us would say basketball when one player
plays another individually. I also remember a movie in the
70’s (almost 50 years ago) by that name which featured a
college basketball player tutored by a female graduate stu-
dent. They fall in love of course but before that she helps
him learn to read and encourages him to persevere in his
sports pursuits and ultimately in life. When we think about
our lives as Christians, most of us have never been discipled
one on one. Think about what a great foundation could be
laid in a person’s life through one on one discipleship. It is
usually the missing part in our discipleship strategy of
preaching and small groups. This fall, we will be offering an
opportunity to study the book Becoming A Disciple Maker in
a small group. After the study is completed, you will be
trained to disciple someone one on one. Think about the
difference that could make in the life of a new believer. Keep
watch for those classes coming up soon. I hope that you will
plan to be a part and prepare yourself to go one-on-one in
discipling someone else.

Warren Weeks

Elementary News:
Recently I’ve heard mention of the days getting shorter, and how the way kids spend their days in the summer has drastically changed over the last 30 years and more. One person mentioned that their mom would feed them break-fast and then kick them out of the house instructing them to not come back until supper time. I can remember being given similar instructions when I was kid, but somehow things have changed.
Times have changed, people have changed, and our kids have changed. Over the last year God has burdened my heart for our pre-teens, our kids in 5th and 6th grade. I’ve seen incredible growth in these kids over the last couple of years, but I’ve also seen the reality that they are still kids. The pre teens we have in our church are mature, they have tremendous leadership qualities, and they have ideas and passions that God has given to them. And then you see them drawing faces on their hand to make a puppet or hear them joke about trying to catch a raccoon with a homemade trap. One minute they are sharing about what God is teaching them, and in the next breath they are talk-ing like Darth Vader.
They are changing and experiencing changes around them more quickly than I could ever imagine. I talk to them like tiny adults at times, challenging them with ideas and truth that God wants them to own. Even I can forget at times the reality of their existing childhood. Culture and society push-es them to grow up faster than parents are ready for, and often more quickly than what we as the church can adapt.
You might be reading this and think, “I’m not sure that’s the case. I think our kids are just that – kids.” I’d mostly agree with you. Thankfully we have incredible parents who I know try to help our kids hold onto their childhood, but it doesn’t mean they don’t feel pressure from other areas. Did you know…?
On average, children are 12.1 when they receive their first mobile device. (Growing Wireless)
56 percent of children, age 8 to 12, have a cellphone. (Growing Wireless)
60 percent of families who have provided a cellphone to their child did so between the ages of 10 and 11. 20 percent provided their 8 to 9 year olds with a cellphone. (Growing Wireless)
71 percent of families with young children under 8 years old have a smartphone. (Growing Wireless)
In 2011, 7.5 million kids under the age of 13 are on Facebook (Consumer Report)
Teens (13-17) make up 32% of the 100 million daily users of SnapChat (DMR)
In 2012, children as young as 12 were experimenting with drugs and alcohol, including hallucinogens and marijuana (American Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)
I don’t share these stats to scare you, but School House Rocks got it right when they said, “Knowledge is power!” How can we use this information? How do we digest it and then seek God’s wisdom to help our kids who are potentially exposed to a fast-paced, constantly changing world know He is real and constant? These are the questions that God has placed on my heart this last year. I want our preteens to know that God is real in their lives, and that it’s still ok to have a smartphone. They need to know that they can always trust God with every-thing, but that if they are on Facebook or Instagram they may not want to trust all of their “friends.” As a church, we need to help them see that God’s love for each one of them will last longer than any trend, style, fashion, or piece of technol-ogy. This is our responsibility, to help them “Love the Lord with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. And to love oth-ers better than themselves.”

One of the things I remember vividly about the first few weeks Jackie and I were married is going to sleep and waking up. I require a little less sleep than she does, so after she fell asleep I would look at her face, etching into my mind the con-tours, the subtle shapes, the texture of her skin. I would watch her nostrils move with her breath, I would study her hairline and try to find every detail of her face. The air was hot (no A/C), the surroundings were new, the TV cast light on the room. But I could focus on only one thing: my bride’s face.
As your worship pastor, that’s analogous to what I envision for our church family. Since we are the Bride of Christ, I yearn for every person who enters the worship gatherings to be so fixated on the face of Jesus—the Bridegroom—that whether the room is cool or warm, the surroundings new or familiar, the sights and sounds reminiscent or innovative…we would invest every part of ourselves in seeing God. I want us to find the contours of His wonderful face. I want us to know what He said and why He said it. I want us to crave the revolution he came to bring. I want us to focus our minds’ attention so intently that everything else in the room—and in our lives—blurs.
I’m reminded of the story of Peter: stepping out in faith to walk on water. In that mind-blowing story, he recognized Jesus and accepted His invitation to come to Him. Then with-out taking his eyes off Jesus’ face, Peter stepped out on the water to do what no one could do apart from God. Can you imagine what “walking on water” worship could be like? But Peter, like us, was fallen. He became distracted by waves and wind. As leaders of worship, we will do everything we can to help you avoid distractions and fix our eyes on Jesus—the Author and Perfector of our faith.
But we can’t do it for you. Please, regardless of what constitutes “wind and waves” for you, set them aside. Let’s explore the nuances of the face of God. Let’s be relentless in our quest to see Him, to see Him in His glory, to see Him in His beauty, His power. To be astound-ed by His grace. Let’s behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Few have said it as well as Helen Lemmel: Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. I love you so much, and I can’t wait to see His face with you on Sunday! Rod
CHRISTMAS MUSICAL
If you'd like sing in this year's Christmas Musical, which we will present the weekend of December 13, we're making it possible for you to do so without being part of the Worship Leading Choir. You just have to come to 3 of these four rehearsals:
September 23(7:30-9p)
October 21(7:30-9p)
December 2( 7:30-9p) and
December 9 (dress rehearsal, starts at 7:30p)
There is also a choir retreat on September 19 where we will sing through the whole musical. See Rod for more information, email Rod [email protected] or text 502.229.0114.
There is so much more in Psalm 90 that I could say. I hope you will dig into it and see what God may have for you. Don’t rush over it. Read it. Meditate on it. Enjoy it. And see what God has for you.

I am thankful to God for the way that He works in my life in so many ways. At just the right time, He speaks. At the most desperate moment, He moves. At the most im-portant juncture, He directs. Everyday is full of His work. In the past couple of weeks I have been focused on one passage of Scripture that shows me His work and also calls me to have a stronger sense of urgency and purpose in my ministry and life. That passage is Psalm 90. It says,
“Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!” For you, a thou-sand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. You sweep people away like dreams that disap-pear. They are like grass that springs up in the morn-ing. In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered. We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury. You spread out our sins before you—our secret sins—and you see them all. We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan. Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you de-serve. Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. O Lord, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory. And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts suc-cessful. Yes, make our efforts successful!”
I won’t elaborate on the passage much to allow you the excitement of meditating on such a great passage. A cou-ple of the greatest truths that I found: 1. From beginning to end, it’s God’s. That means today, from beginning to end, it’s all God’s. 2. Life is short. My life must be used by God. Now! 3. Understanding God’s love is the most satis-fying thing in life.
