FROM OUR EDITOR # # # # # # ## # # # # # # # # # # # # ## #

Thank you Laurie Hansen for hosting our May meeting. And a big thank # # # #you to our Speaker, Jaimie Steeno for an informative presentation. Hopefully you all took lots of notes and new ideas to use in your business from the wealth of experience she has shared.#

Don’t miss out on this month’s meeting. We are honored to have # # # # #Tad Meddough speak to us on “Don’t Blink”. Many of us are familiar with his work and have studied along side of him throughout the years. It will be exciting to hear what he has to share with us. May we learn from his success. #

Paul Hafermann has offered to host a picnic at his home/studio on August 7th, 2016. Don’t miss this opportunity to get together and meet past presidents, as well as getting to know each other better on a more personal basis. It’s always fun to laugh and share experiences with each other while enjoying good food and drink together. Indianhead is more than an organization. We wish to think of Indianhead as our photography ‘family’. Come and take part in this special event. See details elsewhere in this newsletter.##

With the Senior season in full swing, may you have a wonderful and prosperous year. Make it the best ever, and enjoy every minute with the young people who look to you for something special. The experience you create for them will stay in their memories forever. It is an important time in their lives as they enter their senior and final year in high school.# # # # # ## # # # # # # # # # # # # #For those who photograph weddings, know that you can make a difference in these young people’s lives by giving them reminders of the love they share together today. I’ll never forget when a couple, who were married 10 years, shared with me that everytime they get frustrated or angry at each other they sit at the dining room table and look at the beautiful portrait on the wall and remember how much they love each other and the importance of that union. That is what it is all about. #

How about putting an evening or weekend aside this summer? Advertise family sessions at a favorite spot in your community, or take a vacation, using this opportunity to advertise in some exotic location? Make it fun and make some extra money in a short period of time. Remember that you are your own boss and can create your own destiny. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet in a new adventure. Going camping at the lake? Make arrangements to take family group images on site. There are no limitations, so create something new and go for it! This is the time to expand your business and find a nitche that only you can provide. Keep it simple. Make up packages to include a special canvas for their wall that they can’t resist. #

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

As I am working on my Presidents Message, I am still fighting a cold that has lasted for over four weeks.  I real hate not feeling well, but then, who does?!!Our May program speaker, Jamie Steeno, that was very enlightening about how to better understand what type or style of communications work best with your clients or with anyone.  Is your client one that needs to see it or one who needs to hear about it or someone who needs to hold and feel it?   Learning to be able to "read" the communication style that works with each client is important for our success, but for me, I"m not sure how well I will be able to do that.  I"m going to work at it and even if I only have 20% success on reading them, it will help my bottom line.  After all, isn't that what we really want?

The speaker at our meeting on June 13th will be Tad Meddaugh and his program is titled "Don't Blink."  At our meeting you will have the opportunity to hear and see what Tad does with his studio and his photography.  It's also a good chance for you to determine if you would like to spend the day with him in his studio on June 26th.  Tad will be doing the one day program for the WPPA.  For more information, go to the WPPA website:  www.wppa-online.com.!!I know that I am looking forward to his program and get a bit of inspiration before the summer of high school seniors gets started.  I hope you can make it and remember to bring anyone from your studio that would benefit from his program.!!Also, remember to put Sunday, August 7th on your calendar for the Indianhead Picnic & Past President's Party.  Paul Hafermann and his wife at their home / studio in Wisconsin Rapids.  It's an afternoon of fun and food and great conversations with each other and food and if you bring your swimsuit, they might let you go for a swim and don't forget the food.  ;-)!!Hope to see you in Colby on Monday, June 13th, !Tom!

George Hurrell–Hollywood Portrait Photographer by Stu Glaser My first knowledge of George Hurrell was from old cut out magazine photos from the 1930’s of Hollywood stars that were displayed on the rough; bare to the studs walls of a bungalow next to our new house. The bungalow was just used as a gathering place for the previous owners, an old

German couple and their friends to hold dances. I was 14 and this coincided with my setting up my first darkroom and my growing love of old B&W movies. I was a big fan of Warner Brothers gangster movies, especially those starring James Cagney. I would scour the weekly TV Guide in search when these movies would be on. (This was before VCRs and cable.) I will explain later my personal connection involving a Hollywood star and George Hurrell. Hurrell was born in Covington, Kentucky across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio in1904. He only used a camera to photograph his paintings. He moved to California at 21 and met other painters and it was photographer Edward Steichen who suggested he try photography. Hurrell switched because photography was more lucrative than his painting.

The actor Ramon Novarro was so happy with the photographs Hurrell took of him that he showed them to actress Norma Shearer. She started using Hurrell because of his dramatic portrait style and she wanted his photographs to show her in a more provocative manner so her fans could see her in a different way hoping it would open up different acting roles for herself. Besides the new publicity campaign it didn’t hurt that she was married to legendary and powerful MGM producer, Irving Thalberg. Thalberg hired Hurrell as the head photographer at MGM, photographing

their movie stars in his distinct glamour style. His movie star portraits were used everywhere for publicity, especially in magazines that was a very popular way to promote the stars, the studio (MGM) and the movies they appeared in. Stars that he photographed included:

Jean Harlow Clark Gable Myrna Loy

Carole Lombard Norma Shearer (The negative for this photo sold for over $15,000.00 In 2010)

Hurrell left MGM in 1932, ran his own portrait studio and in the early 1940’s moved to the Warner Brothers Studio. In George Hurrell portraits, movie stars usually did not make eye contact with the camera. His B&W photos were mostly high contrast, shot at a low camera angle and the hair and skin highlights were slightly blown out. He used focusable Fresnel stage lighting due to its distinct look in producing a very even lighting that also provided a soft edge and a soft shadow.

Here is a sample of the lighting set up he used to photograph Jean Harlow on a bear skin rug. At Warner Brothers he photographed stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn and my favorite actor, James Cagney. He moved on to Columbia Studios and helped the studio build the career of Rita Hayworth. During WWII Hurrell left Hollywood to make training films for the First Picture Unit of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Back in Hollywood during the 50’s, his photography style wasn’t popular anymore, so he moved to NY where glamour photography fit right into the advertising industry. James Cagney 1938 Shortly after completing a TBS documentary of his life he died in May 1992 from bladder cancer. George Hurrell’s work is in the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, the Smithsonian Institute, the International Center for Photography, the Getty Museum, and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, just to name a few places. His photographs are masterpieces of art that give his subjects the air of grace and grandeur. My connection to George Hurrell? Well, thirty years since first seeing those 1930’s stars from magazine photos I was able to own an original 20” x 24” signed Hurrell of ………………………. James Cagney! (the same as the one pictured above) ♦

Stu received his first camera at 6 years old. It was a Kodak Brownie Holiday. Later he moved up to a Kodak 126 Instamatic and then a 35mm Zenit-B (Russian) at age 13. At age 14 he started a darkroom and used a Pentax Spotmatic 500. He moved on to the High School Year Book Staff and tried to get to the front of the stage to get photos at concerts. Stu graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in Cinema & Photography, Fine Arts Photography.

After graduating, and back in New Jersey where he grew up, he had a short stint as a pro’s assistant and moved on to assignment, wedding and portrait photography. He worked as a national sales & marketing manager for an AV, photography equipment and supply company, before moving to Wisconsin. Through these years he combined photography with scuba diving (Nikonis camera) and enjoyed making stereo slides from a Stereo Realist. He used Yashica Mat26, Nikon F2/FM, and Mamiya 645 cameras and now primarily uses Canon.#

Like most photographers, he collects cameras and interesting old photographs. He is also a movie fan (silent to current) and he’ll admit he used to collect animation art. I live in Plover, moving there to marry my long lost college girlfriend, Anne-Bridget, who is an art professor at UWSP. He says he has the “best step-son”, Isaac, who is in college studying music, specializing in guitar.

Stu has returned to pro photography and now owns “SJ Glaser Photography Photo & Design”. He primarily does studio work and photographs artist’s 2D and 3D artwork, ie., jewelry, sculpture, weavings, textiles, mixed media, etc. for their websites, brocchures and juried entry submissions. His design work is morphing into (e) book cover design and layout. He also enjoys doing panoramas and 360’s and has included them in his work for clients.

Becoming a member of Indianhead, WPPA, and the local Focal Point Camera Club 3 years ago and the PPA two years ago, he wishes he had joined years ago. He says, “At first when seeing members wearing ribbons with

gold bars and pins I thought, ‘What is this, the boy/girl scouts!’ “

To quote Stu, he says, “ I have gained so much technical knowledge and made new friends by my participation within these groups. I learned about print judging criteria and have been blown away by the images I have seen at the WPPA and PPA conventions. These photo technician/artists have inspired me through their imagery. Now I know how much skill, heart, imagination and dedication it takes to get those ribbons with gold bars and pins.

Seen here with world known landscape photographer Clyde Butcher, Stu sets his goals high and has achieved many awards for his work. Congratulations to Stu on a lifetime of fine photography.
