News from the PTO: October, 2014

We have a lot to be thankful for, and a lot more to talk about.

As the trees showcase their bright colors, so do our Independence Elementary

students, families, and staff. The 2014-2015 school year is off to a vibrant start tosay the least. Your children have recently participated in the Fun Run - IEs ONLYfundraiser. Everyone involved had a great time running laps outdoors to supporttheir school, and the sunshine helped keep spirits bright throughout the morning.

We are still collecting donations, and the kids are excited to reach the overallschool goal of $19,150, after which, they will receive a school-wide pizzacelebration. We still have our fingers crossed in anticipation for the final $2500 indonations from parents, so that all of our planned activities and goals can be met

    this year.

State educational funding is down in our district these past years, and it isquickly becoming evident that the Independence Township community has to stepforward in order to assure that our schools remain top-notch, and our children growto become: creative, technological, caring, well-rounded, and global thinkers. Thesematters have taken so such precedence at our last few PTO meetings thateducators at IE have spoken with us about IEs lack of up-to-date technology. Wehave reacted and formed a special committee to plan out an approach towardsimproving the schools outdated computer lab. Thank you Brad Shires (Member-at-

Large) for chairing this important committee and others for stepping up to the plateas well. If you have followed local educational policy, you may have heard thatstandardized testing may soon be administered on computers, instead of scan-trons and paper. This, adjoined with the obvious educational advantages that gohand-in-hand with sufficient and available technology, is something that cannot waitanother year before being remedied.

Stay tuned to our PTO Facebook page (Like us if you have not already) andfuture newsletters to see how you can help transform the computer lab at

Independence Elementary. This is an additional PTO goal for the 2014-2015 schoolyear, so it is imperative that those who may have not contributed to the Fun Run dotheir best to send in a check to the main office made out to the IndependenceElementary PTO. ALL money collected from the Fun Run supports school-wideactivities, field trips, and numerous forms of classroom enrichment.

You will be receiving information soon on two new initiatives that members ofour parent group have begun. The holiday season is upon us, and if you want tohelp us make strides towards improving our computer lab, keep our new SCRIPSprogram in mind. This is a way to purchase gift-cards, wherein the school receives

    4/8

a percentage back from every card bought. Thanks Sarah Malys (Member-at-Large) for coordinating this Passive fundraiser that could bring a healthy amount ofequity to our school and Computer Lab. Additionally, Chelsea OBrien (Vice-President and Green-Schools Advocate) had a great discussion with the DisabledAmerican Veterans Organization. We plan to have a Green D.A.V. Recycle Binplaced on IE grounds this year. This is also very exciting for us in planning for our

Tech Lab make-over, since, on average, schools make $80 dollars a month byusing the bin. You will hear more in the future from the PTO, but just treat this binthe same way that you would a Salvation Army donation - you receive a tax write-off, money goes to support Veterans, and lastly, our school receives a percentageas wellits a Win-Win-Win.

Thank you for your contributions and to the many parent volunteers whoworked to pull off the successful Fun Run event. Special thanks go out to MichelleCray, Shana Wirth, and Todd Rotter for being the champions of the Fun Run thisyear! Furthermore, there were many parents who came out to help out at various

Fun Run stations, assist in classrooms, and cheer on the runners. The PTO, as wellas the staff at Independence Elementary thanks you for fitting this event into yourschedule.

Take a little time on November 4thto vote for candidates who will supportgrowth in our school district, state, and our nation. There are five candidatesrunning for Governor as well as five community members campaigning for threeopen CCS Board of Education seats. This will be a full ballot, with State Senators,Representatives, Judges, School Boards, Attorney Generals, and Secretary of

State candidates all on the ticket. Research them here by copying and pasting thefollowing links to your browser:https://vote.michigan.gov/mvic/selectpublicballot.aspx andhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=71CkUiU3T08&app=desktop

As the leaves fall throughout the upcoming weeks, feel free to take a breakfrom raking, and become a friend of Independence Elementarys PTO onFacebook, Independence Elem PTO and you can stay up to date with IE news. This month, one of our I.E. parents (Ryan Koral) filmed and edited coverage of theFun Run, and the link is provided on our Facebook page. This video was shown

during an October assembly, and everyone really enjoyed seeing this great videocomposition. Anticipate a parent-survey from the PTO in upcoming weeks, and wehope to see you all on Halloween, which is just around the corner. If you can makeit to school to enjoy classroom parties and the school parade, be sure and say hi.Have a great evening on the 31st and feel free to contact me with any questions thatyou may have.

    Thanks
