IntroductionWell-being is now high on everyone’s agenda and must be seen as the foundation of hope for the future following Covid-19.All countries and organisations are recognising that for children to reconnect, reflect, re-build and recover, they will need a transition period on returning to school, with no real expectation for formal learning in the early weeks. This will be a complex transition period and a new “normal” will need to be established by school leaders which focuses on children’s well-being, school behaviours, new routines and learning for all. This resource ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You 2’ will help schools to address how they organise the school day providing a clear focus on the identification of pupils’ experiences and feelings during the lockdown period.

It will support school leaders and staff when planning pupils return and will enable children to reflect, recognise, value, and celebrate their resilience, resourcefulness and make sense of their lockdown experience.

The resource can be used in full or in part, to elicit the current emotional well-being of all pupils. The combination of questionnaires, Discussion Time topics and lessons will also help to identify the children who will require:

• targeted support and monitoring.

• specialist input from external agencies.

• child protection procedures to be followed. Our resource will focus on four development areas of ‘self’ including emotional, social, cognitive and physical well-being.

Schools leaders will be considering their duty of care to ensure a sense of belonging and ownership around how we plan to recover. This resource offers opportunities to allow pupils to have a voice, express themselves, and share their experiences before they return to the demands of the formal curriculum. It promotes Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which emphasises the right of children to have their voices heard and have their views respected in all matters affecting them.

The resource will support staff to: • reconnect with pupils.

• enable pupil voice.

• help pupils to reflect on their experiences.

• rebuild routines and expectations.

• engage pupils in their learning.

• build resilience and communication.

• establish expected behaviours.

• build confidence and relationships.

• value and celebrate our new world.

The resource includes:• Help pupils to reflect on their experiences

These materials will enable pupils to rationalise the lockdown experience and determine what they think, what they heard, what they have learned and what happens next.

• Discussion Time topics focused on what they learned from the experience and next steps These topics will enable teachers to renew their knowledge of and rebuild relationships with their pupils. The topics are linked to suggested additional ideas and lessons as a starting point to build pupils’ re-engagement with learning.

• GIRFEC Well-being Indicators Survey in the context of home life This survey can be used to determine where children are in terms of their well-being by providing valuable individual and accumulative data for schools.

• Lessons focused on new learning about Covid-19, values, support and how we learn These lessons will enable pupils to explore topics such as viruses and scientific achievements from the past, values and beliefs, as well as reflecting on who supports them, how we learn and learning styles.

• Lessons focused responsible citizenship, behaviour, manners and learning These lessons will enable pupils to reflect, explore and confirm their role as responsible and active citizens, expected behaviours, their manners and respect for others in school, and how they maintain their physical well-being as part of a healthy lifestyle.

• Selection of recommended lesson plans from the ICE Pack ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You 1’ These lesson plans are selected and recommended from the current ICE Pack ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You 1’ – if you do not have the resource please contact E: [email protected] for information.
