Honors Art History 110* Pre-history to Gothic CRN: 99892 Class meets: TTh 12:45-2:10pm Room: G-102 Units: 3 Instructor: Denise Rogers B.A., University of California, San Diego M.A., San Diego State University Ph.D., University of California, Irvine

The study of iconography is a strong element of a standard art history course, but it lacks an in-depth study of their origins, their meaning, their impact on the development of cultural ideologies, and their appropriation by other cultures. The study of these icons relate to a variety of themes that allow for an interdisciplinary approach to the class. For example, religious/spiritual belief systems are communicated through language as well as a lexicon of icons. These icons then enable the establishment of cultural ideologies that in turn dictate the use or misuse of icons that influence social roles, politics and other cultural aspects of a particular society. We will follow the development and transformation of particular icons across cultures and analyze the manner in which they are received and distributed via works of art and transform into archetypes that are representative of that particular culture. Honors Black Studies 140A U.S. History/Black Perspective CRN: 00744 Class meets: Th 6:00-8:50pm Room: G-105 Units: 3 Instructor: Chuck Ambers This course is a survey of American history from the colonial period to 1877, with emphasis on the economic and cultural development of the country. This course is intended for transfer students planning to major in African American Studies, history, political science, or other social sciences. The complete one year course, 140A and 140B, satisfies the graduation requirement in American Institutions.

Honors Chicano Studies 135* Chicano/a Literature CRN: 00514 Class meets: MW 12:45-2:10pm Room: G-107 Units: 3 Instructor: Manuel Velez B.A., University of Texas, El Paso M.F.A., University of Texas, El Paso

In this course we will explore the intersection between history and literature by reading and interpreting autobiographies and memoirs that reflect the Chicana/o experiences on the North American continent. Beginning with the journals and diaries of Spanish explorers such as Cabeza de Baca and ending with the contemporary urban experiences of writers such as Luis Rodriguez, we will focus on how the auto-biography serves as a vehicle of interpretation of the historical experiences that have shaped the Chicana/o identity. We will also explore how the Chicana/o autobiography works to develop a sense of “place” within the historical, political, geographical, and literary narrative of this country and how this development reflects Chicana/o Literature’s relation to other Post-Colonial literature. Honors Economics 120* Principles of Macroeconomics CRN: 06644 Class meets: MW 12:45-2:10pm Room: MV-30 Units: 3 Instructor: Becca Arnold B.S., University of Arkansas, Fayetteville M.S., San Diego State University In Honors Economics 120 students have the opportunity to learn the "why's" and "what's" about our current economic situation. After completing the course students can expect to have increased capability to discuss issues such as unemployment, inflation, fiscal policy, monetary policy and the Federal Reserve. In the course we will cover issues as small as consumer purchases of Apple Computers and as large as the (un)popularity of the World Trade Organization.

This course will focus on Earth materials, including rocks and minerals, and also on Earth processes, including volcanism, earthquakes, and mountain building--all understood through the lens of plate tectonic theory. As a compelling scientific model, plate tectonic theory posits that Earth’s outer, brittle shell is broken up into migrating slabs of rock called plates. In addition to the standard course activities, including lectures, in-class work, discussions, and field trips, honors students will design and implement a geoscience research project involving data collection and analysis, which they’ll present to an audience of their peers. In essence, students will be “doing geology” rather than just learning about it.
