THE HOLY SPIRIT HIS ROLE DURING THE EARLY DAYS OF THE
CHURCH AND HIS ROLE TODAY.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• There may be as much misunderstanding of and false doctrine taught
about the role of the Holy Spirit as any other subject in the
scriptures.
• Our goal today is not to bring up and refute each of these false
doctrines but rather to determine what the Word of God has to say
about Him.

THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Once we know what the truth is on any subject, then we will be able
to recognize error on that subject when it is presented to us.
• The Holy Spirit is known by several other names.
• Spirit of God:
• Ro 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are
sons of God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Holy Ghost:
• The phrase “Holy Ghost” is found mainly in the “King James”
version of the Bible.
• The NKJV, ASV, RSV, YLT and Darby’s do not contain this phrase
but rather translate “Holy Ghost” as “Holy Spirit”
• The KJV translates “pneuma” as Ghost and Spirit

THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Comforter:
• Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom
the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have
said unto you.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Spirit of Truth:
• Joh 15:26 ¶ But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send
unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

THE HOLY SPIRIT
• We could go on and list other names that the Holy Spirit is
known by but I believe these are sufficient to establish who we
will be discussing.
• The Holy Spirit, The Holy Ghost, The Spirit of God, The
Comforter and The Spirit of Truth
• These are all names of the same individual
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Now lets look at who the Holy Spirit is.
• He is God.
• Mt 1:18 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After
His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came
together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting
to make her a public example, was minded to put her away
secretly.
• 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of
the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Jesus was conceived in Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit.
• Whose child was He? Mary was his mother and God was His
father.
• Lu 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will
overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be
born will be called the Son of God.
5/31/2017
6
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Follow the logic here:
• Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit
• Jesus was the Son of God
• Therefore the Holy Spirit must be God
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• He is part of the “God Head” or Trinity.
• The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit
• Mt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit,
• Jesus put all three on the same level as God
5/31/2017
7
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• He was also present at creation:
• Ge 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness
was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was
hovering over the face of the waters.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• He was manifested as part of the God head along with God the
Father at the Baptism of Christ.
• Lu 3:21 ¶ When all the people were baptized, it came to pass
that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven
was opened.

THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove
upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are
My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."
THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Now that we have a little bit of background on the names of the
Holy Spirit and who He is (God), lets look at His role in the
scriptures in the following areas:
• Revelation
• Miracles
• Conversion
• Baptism

HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• When we address His role in Revelation I am talking about His
role in the revealing the Word of God to man.
• 2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture
is of any private interpretation.
• 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy
Ghost.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Those spokesmen for God in the Old Testament were told what
to say and write by the Holy Spirit.
• During the early days of the Church, the Holy Spirit told inspired
men what to say
5/31/2017
10
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Lu 12:11 "Now when they bring you to the synagogues and
magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what
you should answer, or what you should say.
• 12 "For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what
you ought to say."
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Jesus tells Peter, James, John and Andrew the same thing:
• Mr 13:11 "But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not
worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But
whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you
who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
• The Holy Spirit was going to reveal to them the things they
should say and He would speak thru them.
5/31/2017
11
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Joh 14:25 ¶ "These things I have spoken to you while being
present with you.
• 26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your
remembrance all things that I said to you.
• The things the Apostles and others inspired by the Holy Spirit
taught were taught to them by the Holy Spirit.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Paul says the words they used to teach were from the Holy Spirit.
• 1Co 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's
wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing
spiritual things with spiritual.
• We have seen that the Word of God during the Old Testament
and the early days of the Church was revealed to men by the Holy
Spirit.
5/31/2017
12
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Does the Holy Spirit reveal the Word of God to us today? Yes!
• He reveals God’s Word to us today strictly thru the scriptures.
• He does not work with man today outside of the scriptures.
• Before the New Testament was completed there was a necessity
for supernatural revelation from the Holy Spirit in order to know
what God’s will was.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Once the New Testament was completed, there was no longer a
need for supernatural revelation.
• If we want to know what God’s will is we simply go to His Word.
• Paul explains how this works.
• Eph 3:1 ¶ For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus
for you Gentiles--
5/31/2017
13
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• 2 if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of
God which was given to me for you,
• 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery
(as I have briefly written already,
• 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my
knowledge in the mystery of Christ),
• The Holy Spirit revealed knowledge to Paul and others.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• The Holy Spirit directed them to write these things down.
• When we read the things that were written by these men, then
we can understand what the Holy Spirit revealed to them.
• In that sense, the Holy Spirit reveals God’s plan to us today thru
the scriptures He directed men to write.
5/31/2017
14
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• The supernatural revelation of the Holy Spirit came to an end
when the New Testament was completed.
• 1Co 13:8 ¶ Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies,
they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease;
whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
• 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is
in part will be done away.
• 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a
child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away
childish things.
5/31/2017
15
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.
Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am
known.
• 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the
greatest of these is love.
• The supernatural gifts of prophecy, tongues and knowledge will
cease or come to an end.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• When? When that which is perfect is come.
• That which is perfect is the perfect law of Liberty or the law of
Christ. The New Testament!
• The New Testament was completed around the end or the 1st
century therefore, supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit
came to an end around the end of the 1st century.
5/31/2017
16
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• How do we know this is not talking about the 2nd coming of Christ?
• 10 But when that which is perfect has come…
• If we look at the context we see this is not talking about Christ’s
second coming.
• These verses refer to a time period when these supernatural gifts
will cease and when other things will remain.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Those things that remain are Faith, Hope and Love.
• 1Co 13:13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three;
• When Christ comes again, of these 3 only love will remain.
• At Christ coming our faith will be sight
• 2Co 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
• Once we see God, we will no longer walking by faith.
5/31/2017
17
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Once we receive the thing we hope for (heaven) we will no
longer have hope.
• 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 cannot be referring to Christ’s second
coming because faith and hope will not abide or continue then.
HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN REVELATION
• Since this is not referring to Christ’s 2nd coming then it has to be
referring to the completion of the New Testament that James
calls the perfect Law of Liberty.
• Jas 1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty….

18
CONCLUSION
• We have seen today that the Holy Spirit is God.
• He is known by several names.
• He revealed directly to man the Will of God during the Old
Testament and the early days of the Church.
CONCLUSION
• These supernatural revelations came to and end around the end
of the 1st century when the New Testament was completed.
• He reveals God’s Will to us today thru the things He instructed
inspired men to write during the 1st century (the New
Testament).
• We have no need for direct revelation today since we now have
the completed, perfect Word of God

THE HOLY SPIRIT THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY SPIRIT
•We began a study last time of the Holy Spirit and His
role in the early Church and His role today.
•We learned He is called by several different names.
•Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, Spirit of God, The Comforter
and The Spirit of Truth
5/31/2017
20
THE HOLY SPIRIT
•We looked at His role in the Revelation of God’s Word
•We saw how He revealed God’s Word to the Apostles
and others who recorded the New Testament.
•We learned this revelation was completed around the
end of the 1st century.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
•The Holy Spirit reveals the Word of God to us strictly
thru the scriptures today.
•Today, we want to look at the Baptism of the Holy
Spirit and see what the scriptures have to say about it.
5/31/2017
21
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• John the Baptist prophesied about this baptism
•Mt 3:11 "I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier
than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•12 "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will
thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather
His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff
with unquenchable fire."
5/31/2017
22
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•There were some in the audience that would receive
the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
•Without a doubt some of the Apostles of Christ were
present when John made this prophecy.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•We will just mention briefly at this time the baptism of
fire mentioned here.
•The Baptism of Fire is eternal destruction in Hell.
•That point is made clear in vs 12 when the chaff is
burned up in unquenchable fire.
5/31/2017
23
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Jesus mentions the Baptism of the Holy Spirit just
before his ascension in Acts 1 and he relates it to
the promise of the Holy Spirit.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 1:4 And being assembled together with them, He
commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to
wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said,
"you have heard from Me;
• 5 "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be
baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
5/31/2017
24
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•The Promise they were waiting on from the father was
the Holy Spirit.
• Joh 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in My name, He will teach you all
things, and bring to your remembrance all things that
I said to you.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•When they received the Holy Spirit not many days
after the ascension of Christ they were Baptized with
the Holy Spirit.
•Ac 2:1 ¶ When the Day of Pentecost had fully come,
they were all with one accord in one place.
5/31/2017
25
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as
of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
• 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of
fire, and one sat upon each of them.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
them utterance.
•This was the Apostles being baptized with the Holy
Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
5/31/2017
26
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•When the Apostles were baptized with the Holy Spirit
on the day of Pentecost they also received the ability
to lay their hands on other people and impart the gift
of the Spirit to them.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•They also received all of the spiritual gifts:
•Healing, knowledge, tounges, prophecy, miracles,
faith and the rest spelled out in 1 Corinthians 12.
•Those on whom the Apostles laid their hands only
received two or three of these it seems at the most.
5/31/2017
27
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•There was only one other instance of Holy Spirit baptism
mentioned in the scriptures and it was done for a very
specific purpose.
• In Acts 10 Peter was sent by a vision to preach to the
household of Cornelius.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Cornelius was a Gentile. Up until this time it was not a
common practice for the Gospel to be preached to the
Gentiles.
•When Peter returned to Jerusalem in Acts 11 he was
called on the carpet by other Jewish Christians for
preaching to the Gentiles
5/31/2017
28
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 11:1 ¶ Now the apostles and brethren who were in
Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the
word of God.
• 2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the
circumcision contended with him,
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•3 saying, "You went in to uncircumcised men and ate
with them!“
• 4 But Peter explained it to them in order from the
beginning, saying:
5/31/2017
29
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I
saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let
down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me.
• 6 "When I observed it intently and considered, I saw
four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping
things, and birds of the air.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•7 "And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter; kill and
eat.‘
•8 "But I said, 'Not so, Lord! For nothing common or
unclean has at any time entered my mouth.‘
•9 "But the voice answered me again from heaven, 'What
God has cleansed you must not call common.'
5/31/2017
30
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•10 "Now this was done three times, and all were
drawn up again into heaven.
• 11 "At that very moment, three men stood before the
house where I was, having been sent to me from
Caesarea.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 12 "Then the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting
nothing. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me,
and we entered the man's house.
• 13 "And he told us how he had seen an angel standing
in his house, who said to him, 'Send men to Joppa, and
call for Simon whose surname is Peter,
5/31/2017
31
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 14 'who will tell you words by which you and all your
household will be saved.'
• 15 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon
them, as upon us at the beginning.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 11:16 "Then I remembered the word of the Lord,
how He said, 'John indeed baptized with water, but you
shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
• 17 "If therefore God gave them the same gift as He
gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ,
who was I that I could withstand God?"
5/31/2017
32
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 18 When they heard these things they became silent;
and they glorified God, saying, "Then God has also
granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.“
•Peter identifies the Holy Spirit falling on Cornelius and
his family as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•He also says that this is the same way it happened to
them in the beginning (the day of Pentecost)
•The Holy Spirit fell on both groups directly from God.
No man played a part in either event.
• In both instances there was a purpose for this Baptism
of the Holy Spirit.
5/31/2017
33
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•With the Apostles, it was to guide them into all truth.
• Joh 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth,
has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He
will not speak on His own authority, but whatever
He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things
to come.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• In the case of Cornelius and his family, it was to prove
to the Jews that the Gospel was to the Gentile also.
•Ac 10:44 ¶ While Peter was still speaking these
words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard
the word.
5/31/2017
34
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•45 And those of the circumcision who believed were
astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift
of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles
also.
• 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and
magnify God. Then Peter answered,
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be
baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we
have?“
• If the Holy Spirit had not fallen on Cornelius and his
family Peter and the Jews with him may have refused to
baptize these Gentiles.
5/31/2017
35
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• In Acts 15 Peter tells the brethren in Jerusalem that
God gave Cornelius’ household the Holy Spirit to
prove the Gentiles were accepted by God.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 15:7 And when there had been much dispute, Peter
rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know
that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my
mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel
and believe.
5/31/2017
36
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•8 "So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them
by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,
•These two events, the Holy Spirit falling on the
Apostles and the Holy Spirit falling on the household of
Cornelius are the only two instances of Holy Spirit
Baptism in the New Testament.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• In every other case of someone receiving the Holy
Spirit after the establishment of the Church it was
imparted to them by the laying on of the Apostle’s
hands.
5/31/2017
37
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• In Acts 8 Philip who was not an apostle, preaches and
converts many in Samaria.
•Ac 8:14 ¶ Now when the apostles who were at
Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word
of God, they sent Peter and John to them,
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Peter and John were Apostles.
• 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for
them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
• 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They
had only been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus.
5/31/2017
38
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received
the Holy Spirit.
• 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on
of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he
offered them money,
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•19 saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on
whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.“
•Philip couldn’t give it to them because he was not an
apostle
•God did not give it to them directly or “Baptize” them
with it
5/31/2017
39
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•The way they received it was by the Apostles laying
their hands on them.
•When Paul, who was an apostle, came to Ephesus and
found 12 men who had been baptized into John’s
baptism. He taught them the truth and then imparted
the Holy Spirit to them.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 19:6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the
Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with
tongues and prophesied.
•Paul also wanted to go to Rome so he could impart
spiritual gifts to the Christians there.
5/31/2017
40
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ro 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to
you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established
•How was he going to give it to them? The same way he
gave it to those in Ephesus and the same way those in
Samaria got it.
•By the laying on of an Apostle’s hands.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•The Baptism of the Holy Spirit came to an end after
Cornelius and his family received it.
•After this event took place there was only one type of
baptism in effect and that was in water for the
remission of sins.
5/31/2017
41
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you
were called in one hope of your calling;
• 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
• 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and
through all, and in you all.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
• Some may read this verse and think “One baptism?
The Bible mentions several different kinds of baptism.”
• It does, but only one was in effect when Paul wrote the
book of Ephesians
5/31/2017
42
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•The Israelites were baptized in the Red Sea
• John the Baptist baptized his followers for the
forgiveness of sins.
•Mr 1:4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and
preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission
of sins.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•There is the Baptism of fire that John mentions.
•There is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
•There is the Baptism in water for the forgiveness of
sins that is a part of teaching “Jesus”
5/31/2017
43
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning
at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.
• 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to
some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water.
What hinders me from being baptized?"
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Which of these was in effect when Paul wrote
Galatians and is still in effect today?
•Baptism in water for the remission of sins according to
the commands of Christ.
•The same baptism that Peter says now saves us.
5/31/2017
44
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•1Pe 3:21 ¶ There is also an antitype which now
saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the
flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
•Baptism of the Holy Spirit didn’t save anyone.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Cornelius and his household were still lost after
receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
• It was the words (the Gospel) Peter was going to tell
them that was going to save them.
5/31/2017
45
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
•Ac 11:14 'who will tell you words by which you and
all your household will be saved.'
• 15 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell
upon them, as upon us at the beginning.
•The Holy Spirit fell on them before they had a chance
to hear the words that would save them.
CONCLUSION
•The Baptism of the Holy Spirit only took place on two
occasions. Both times it was for a specific purpose.
•People are not Baptized with the Holy Spirit today.
•We know this because Paul says there is only “one
baptism”.
5/31/2017
46
CONCLUSION
•There is one more baptism to come.
•The baptism of fire.
•We want to avoid this baptism at all cost
• It will be for all those who do not obey God and it will
be eternal.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN
CONVERSION
5/31/2017
47
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• What role does the Holy Spirit play in the conversion of man?
• This is a question that seems to cause a great deal of confusion in the
religious world
• When we talk about conversion we are talking about the process by
which man turns from his life of sin to a life of following God.
• This conversion takes place in the mind of man. Which is often referred
to as the heart in the scriptures
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• This conversion is necessary for our salvation.
• Ac 3:19 "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be
blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence
of the Lord,
• The fact that the Holy Spirit has a role in our conversion is undeniable.
• Lets look at a few things that the Holy Spirit does for men
5/31/2017
48
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The Holy Spirit convicts men of sin.
• Joh 16:7 ¶ "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage
that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to
you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
• 8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment:
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Christians are born again by the Spirit
• Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
• 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?
can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
• 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born
of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The Spirit also gives us life
• Joh 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The
words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The Spirit also makes us free
• Ro 8:1 ¶ There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are
in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according
to the Spirit.
• 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free
from the law of sin and death.

HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The Spirit also washes, sanctifies and justifies sinners.
• 1Co 6:9 ¶ Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the
kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor
idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
• 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were
sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by
the Spirit of our God.

51
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The Holy Spirit also calls us to eternal life.
• Re 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who
hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let
him take the water of life freely.
• No doubt we could go on and list other things that the Holy Spirit does
for us but for the sake of time we are only going to look at these few.
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Few would deny that the Holy Spirit has a role in our conversion today.
• The verses we have just looked at would be proof to any honest Bible
believing person that the Holy Spirit is working converting people even
now.
• The disagreement and confusion is in the area of, How does the Holy
Spirit accomplish this work in our conversion.

52
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Some would claim the nature of man is so wicked, corrupt and depraved
that only thru a direct operation of the Holy Spirit on the heart of man
can he be turned to God
• This “direct operation” is apart from any other agency including the Word
of God.
• This is false doctrine! The Holy Spirit does not nor has it ever directly
operated on the heart or mind of any man causing him to believe.
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• The work of the Holy Spirit in conversion has always been accomplished
thru the Word of God being taught by men.
• Those who obeyed on the day of Pentecost did so at the direction of the
Holy Spirit thru the mouths of the Apostles
• Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5/31/2017
53
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Peter and the other apostles then began to speak to the multitudes the
things the Holy Spirit told them to say.
• It was the words they heard that day that led to their conversion.
• Ac 2:37 ¶ Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and
said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what
shall we do?"
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• It was the words that Peter was directed to speak by the Holy Spirit to
Cornelius and his household that would lead to their conversion..
• Acts 10:5 "Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose
surname is Peter.
• 6 "He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He
will tell you what you must do.“
• The way you tell someone something is with words
5/31/2017
54
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• When Peter recounts this story in Acts 11, makes this point even clearer.
• Ac 11:13 "And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his
house, who said to him, 'Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose
surname is Peter,
• 14 'who will tell you words by which you and all your household will
be saved.‘
• The Holy Spirit certainly had the power to force salvation on man but
chose rather to do it thru words delivered by men.
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Even Saul of Tarsus (Apostle Paul) had to be told by a man what to do,
even after seeing Jesus on the road to Damascus.
• Ac 9:3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light
shone around him from heaven.
• 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul,
Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"
5/31/2017
55
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• Ac 9:5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am
Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the
goads."
• 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me
to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you
will be told what you must do.“
• There is not a single case of conversion in the New Testament where a
person became a Christian without first hearing the Word of God.
HOLY SPIRIT IN CONVERSION
• In fact, everything that the Holy Spirit does for us today it does thru the
Word of God.
• The Holy Spirit revealed the Word to the Apostles and other inspired
men who then recorded it for us today.
• Each of us here should possess the only physical manifestation of the
work of the Holy Spirit today.
• The Bible. A copy of the Word of God.

Tit 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed,
not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,

controlled,
9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able,
by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

CONCLUSION
• In spite of what many may think. The Holy Spirit does not operate
directly on the hearts of some and not on the hearts of others.
• This would make God a respecter of persons
• The work of the Holy Spirit is not some mystical strange event that
occurs in the life of man
• It is rather, the influence of the Word of God on the minds of men who
learn and obey the commands and principles contained in it.
