Peaceful New Year

PLEASE NOTE:There will now be a four week break

until the next issue ofTHE HOLT CHRONICLE

which will be out on Friday 11th January.

Funding for a wide range of projects designed to improve the economic vitality of four inland market towns, Holt, Fakenham, North Walsham and Stalham, has been approved. A meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet agreed to a set of recommendations on the 3rd December, which had been put forward by the Market Towns Initiative working group. Each town was able to bid for £100,000 to spend on projects enabling them to take part in the development of their economic future. The money comes from a total pot of £400,000. Around £130,000 remains in the Market Towns Initiative fund and a second round of applications will be opened to access this money, with the closing date for these applications being 12th February. The amount any one town can receive in total will remain at a maximum of £100,000, so if a town received £50,000 in the first round, it would be able to bid for up to £50,000 in the second round.Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and the Liberal Democrat Group, and Chairman of the MTI working group, said: “I was delighted by the range of projects that were put forward and very pleased that Cabinet ratified the recommendations of the working group this morning. All of our communities deserve our support.”The nine successful applicants are:Fakenham Town Council - £24,341.67 for a regenerative project that would provide a facelift for rundown shop fronts and signage in the town centre.Fakenham Town Council - £2,525 to design and print a heritage guide with a map and information about the town to be used by residents and visitors.Active Fakenham - £33,550 to coordinate, resource and market a large number of events in the town centre. The Holt Society - £7,210 to design and print a pamphlet and five notice boards to provide information on the Holt Owl Trail to residents and visitors.Love Holt - £26,000 to implement a major marketing campaign for the town designed to increase visitors and trade.Holt Town Council - £17,514 for projects including an accessible ‘Yellow Brick Route’, and a Holt park and ride scheme.Regenerate North Walsham and North Walsham Town Council - £99,575 to implement three major improvement projects split between improving St Nicholas Court, the town centre and attracting more visitors to the town.Stalham Town Council - £32,204.70 to improve the tourism offer with an aim to attract more visitors by making improvements to the Staithe and its connection to the town centre via improvements to signage.Stalham Area Business Forum - £22,171.25 to implement multiple regenerative projects in the town centre.Community groups were able to work together with North Norfolk District Council to put in the bids.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWSfrom County Councillor Dr. Marie Strong

Budget consultation 2019/20: Whilst I gave a lot of information and encouragement last month as to you having your say forgive me for the reinforcement. The consultation is open and closes on 23rd December 2018; proposals include making changes to the Adult Social Care charging policy; increasing the Council Tax by 2.99%. Read the proposals in Autumn issue of ‘Your Norfolk’ magazine or go online at www.norfolk.gov.uk/budget. Feed back your views using the online consultation or send your views in writing to: Freepost Plus RTCL-XSTT-JZSK Norfolk County Council, Ground floor - South Wing, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich NR1 2DH. Request individual consultation documents in other formats, including paper form, by calling 0844 800 8020 or emailing [email protected] - this will include large print, easy-read for people with learning disabilities, Braille, audio etc.Scams Warning: Scams are once again on the increase and many promise lottery winnings. Norfolk County Council Trading Standards offer the following simple steps to avoid lottery scams:• If you have not entered a lottery then you cannot have won it. Never respond to unexpected communications.• Official lotteries in other countries operate in much the same way as the UK’s National Lotto. No official lotteries that we know of contact people to tell them of their win.• We do not know of any official lottery operators who ask for fees to collect winnings. Any request for a fee payment is a good indication that someone is trying to scam you.• Never disclose your bank details or pay fees in advance to claim a lottery win.• If an email address is provided be very suspicious of addresses such as @hotmail.com or @yahoo.com or numbers beginning with 07.• Genuine lotteries thrive on publicity. If asked to keep your win a secret it is likely to be a scam. Many examples of lottery scam letters have bad spelling and grammar, see this as a warning that fraudsters are at work. (But others are getting more sophisticated so just remember there is no such thing as a free lunch.)UK Power Networks is offering advice to anyone experiencing a power cut. Call 105 to report power cuts and damage to the electricity network, or 0800 3163 105 (from a corded phone or mobile phone if you have no power). Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk for the latest updates.Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/powercut and type in your postcode to view the live power cut map; tweet @ukpowernetworks to report a power cut or to receive updates. Extra help is provided to customers on the Priority Service Register. Households with older or disabled people, those with children under five, or where someone uses medical or mobility equipment that requires electricity as well as other reasons can join the register. You can find out more on: www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priorityResidents’ Parking: After a summer of visitors’ cars a number of people have asked me about residents’ parking schemes so I investigated the possibilities. In brief I am informed that because of the current financial situation and the budgetary financial pressures the county council is under, it is not in a position to fund a new residents’ permit scheme. NCC would only support development of a suitable scheme which, in addition to having full support from residents/stakeholders, would require funding be made available from other sources. I was told previous schemes for residential parking in North Norfolk cost upwards of £50,000 and following consultation did not reach implementation stage. I was further told that a fully implemented scheme could cost considerably more and would need to be found from other sources than NCC. Food for thought!Closing the Majority of Norfolk’s Children’s Centres: Debate continues, including at full Council in December. Will there be a happy ending as for the Mobile Libraries saga? All for nowMarie, County Cllr Dr Marie StrongWells Division: Barshams & Houghton St Giles, Binham with Cockthorpe, Blakeney, Brinton with Sharrington, Field Dalling & Saxlingham, Glandford with Letheringsett, Great Snoring, Great & Little Walsingham, Hindringham, Holkham, Langham, Morston, Sculthorpe, Stiffkey, Stody with Hunworth, Thornage & Little Thornage, Warham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Wighton, Wiveton.

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

While I was relaxing in the lounge of my friend’s Florida home, another guest, also a Brit, strode in looking peeved. He’d lost his credit card and had to ring the card company to report it.Going through some details with the customer services rep, we heard him say, “What do you mean, ‘What state am I in?’? I’m bloody worried someone will use it! You could say I’m distraught!” The rep said something back, then he replied sheepishly, “Oh...Florida.”Visiting an elderly aunt, I was surprised when she answered the door wearing her hat. “Are you just going out?” I asked.“No dear,” she replied. “I always put my hat on when someone comes to the door. Then, if it’s someone I don’t want to see, I can say I’m just popping out. Seeing as it’s you , I’ve just come in.”Retired but wanting a part-time job, my friend took up a position with a funeral director. At his first service, he expected to find trestles in the church aisle to rest the coffin on, but none were present. Thinking on his feet, he turned to the congregation and asked, “Can I have three chairs for the coffin please?”A voice from the back responded, “Hip, hip......”

COMMUNITY HELP IN MALAWI Aid Africa update by Lynda Mills

Back in the UK and delighted to be cold after the stifling heat of Malawi! As we look back over the last two months, characters and circumstances stand out, Fanny and her desperation for housing, Boniface, having just completed our Education Programme, clutching his successful exam results jubilantly aiming for university placement. Fages, our Field Worker, determinedly focussed on learning computer skills, when at 48, she’d never touched one before, and dozens of kids enjoying phala (fortified porridge) provided at our milk Centres. All the ups and downs of life in rural Malawi, reflecting the resilience of the people but set against the constant backdrop of increasing hunger...So what did we do? It was a busy trip, we bought in maize, 12,500 kgs (basis for 50,000 meals) ready for our Food Programme beginning at Christmas. Then we set to work repairing broken borehole pumps, restoring clean water to 2199 households, about 10,000 people in 12 different areas.Still on the subject of water, we constructed a run of 3 bridges, giving safe access for children walking to schools and villagers travelling to market, maize mills, hospitals and water supplies. Hundreds travel this dirt-road shortcut daily but over successive rainy seasons, torrential downpours upstream had hewn out huge chasms in the roadway, slicing it into 3 sections, causing dangerous crossings, particularly challenging for the elderly and infirm. But

now there are sturdy bridges, with stone pillars supporting huge wooden poles capped with treated timbers, set to serve this community for decades to come.So much else happened, which we’ll share next

issue, in the meantime, thank you for your help and support!Using Amazon this Christmas? WEYBOURNE WI CHRISTMAS PARTY

There was a festive atmosphere at the village hall on Wednesday afternoon, 5th December, when members and friends of Weybourne WI met for the Christmas Party.Newly appointed President, Celia Howe, welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the new committee. A few brief business items were discussed, which included a request for members to select a resolution for 2019. It was also decided that our chosen charity for the coming year would be ‘Lilac Ladies’.The party began with a quiz and we then enjoyed a delicious buffet, comprising a wide variety of items contributed by members.A challenge had been set to create a Christmas hat from paper and

there was a wonderful array of different designs on display. These were judged by Kath Griffiths,

who chose a hat in the form of a Christmas pudding on a plate as the winner.Entertainment was provided by a few members who sang songs and read amusing anecdotes and stories. The highlight was a rendition of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ performed by the ‘Wicked Imps’ and their choir. The afternoon concluded with the singing of some Christmas carols. All members agreed, it had been a very enjoyable start to the festive season.

THAXTERS CHRISTMAS RAFFLE IN SUPPORT OF THE OWL PLAYSCHOOL

The Owl is a charity run play school that has been established in Holt for over 25 years, offering a warm, friendly and stimulating environment for children aged between two and five years of

We are fundraising for the project by donating the proceeds of the ticket sales of our new annual Christmas raffle to this very worthy cause! This years Christmas raffle prize is a Hilka Tool set and box with a retail price of £249.95 inc VAT, which is on display in our yard. GLADMAN’S PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT

Dear Caroline,A very well-attended and vocal meeting at Holt Community Centre of concerned residents left District Councillors in no doubt that most Holt people are deeply unhappy about the proposed development off Beresford Road. Although many of us would love to see a new school built there, most people feel that the cost: the erection of even more unaffordable houses on a site with serious access problems and the consequent traffic problems on the already congested Charles Road, is far too high a price to pay. Many people feel Holt Medical Practice is already overstretched. Many are worried about the impact on the Country Park. Everyone who feels strongly about this development needs to make their views known immediately to NNDC. Without a clear indication of the strength of public feeling, the planning committee will not be able to resist the professional lobbying of the developers, even though Gladman’s previous plan was turned down by the Court of Appeal just three years ago. Everyone who wishes to have their say must do so in writing, explaining clearly why they think this is a very bad idea. Objections need to be made before Christmas, either by mail or electronically on the NNDC planning site, reference number PO/18/1857.Just Google NNDC Planning or write to the Planning Department, NNDC, Cromer NR27 9EN.A further public meeting is planned for the New Year. Yours sincerely,Paula D’Attoma

THE FLU JABDear Caroline,In reply to the letters in your last issue from P. Taverham and Tom Dick, the Flu vaccine’s insert slip clearly states that it… ’May not fully protect all persons who are vaccinated’ and that the side effects include ‘Guillian Barre Syndrome’, which is life threatening. I don’t ‘latch on to obscure medical sites’, the information I gave was neither ‘myth nor misinformation’ P Taverham. I am well aware that a few people will try to shoot the pigeon when they are seriously suffering from cognitive dissonance. Furthermore, no, I am not qualified in allopathic medicine or well paid for by big pharmacology, but I know of its iatrogenic results. And no Tom Dick, (luckily), I didn’t go to university, so I may not be as intelligent as you, however, any idiot (like me) can go

on the Government NHS website and read the same results as I did, (only 15% effective last year and not always safe for all). I am so shocked at you for not trusting your own government website!I hope you both have a very merry Christmas and avoid the flu, overstimulating your immune systems, blood sugars etc. throughout the festive season and winter. And if, by any unforeseeable misfortune come January, you urgently need any mind/body repairs, detox protocols, find yourselves nutritionally depleted or need an emergency ‘diet’, I am qualified in holistic nutrition. So please, don’t hesitate to contact me if you require my help out of any untimely muddles, nutritionally wise.Yours sincerely,Lynn Marie Jackson.

FUNDRAISINGDear Caroline,My amazing sister Rhianwen Smee will be attempting to run 48 miles on January 26th 2019 to raise money for Beat, a charity to help those who suffer from eating disorders. I can’t tell you how proud I am of my sister’s honesty and determination to help others. She has suffered over 3 decades with an eating disorder and is eventually tackling her condition.Rhianwen wishes to share her story to help others and this can be found on her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rhianwen-smee where it is also possible to donate. Please help her raise some funds for this very worthwhile cause. No matter how small the donation it all adds up.Yours sincerely,Ceridwen Smee

VESSELS OF TRUTHDear CarolineFor the unenlightened the cross is a thing of suffering and death, for the enlightened it is a symbol of truth. (The spirit). Truth takes away our duel nature it purifies our conscience from sin. Truth is the correctness of things it enlightens people and turns them into living gods. Whosoever have purified their conscience with truth have become a Christ, an enlightened person, they have died to sin, and have become a perfect person. They have lifted up their nature into a higher state of being, they dwell only in their purified conscience, which is a state of truth, they have become like truth itself, they can truly say, ‘I am truth, I am Christ, I am God’.And so I say unto all of you who preach Jesus, preach the truth instead and the truth will make you free. For the story of Jesus is the greatest deception that the world has ever known. So, come to the light of truth and then

you will see more clearly how to make people, vessels of truth. If you want to tell me that I am wrong, my number is 07887 793666.Yours sincerely,Maurice Gray

CORRESPONDENCEDear Caroline,How lucky the people of Holt are to receive two letters in one edition of The Chronicle from Mr Wood.I was especially amused to read his fears of Holt becoming a ‘retirement home monoculture’ of ‘wealthy incomers’. Also that new houses were only affordable ‘if you are lucky enough to have a house in London or Cambridge to sell’.Well, that just fits the bill as Mr Wood himself was in exactly that position. Or perhaps he has not sold his Cambridge house but lets it out at some exorbitant rate thereby being able to fund his comfortable retirement in ‘our lovely town’.In his second epistle he has great fun deriding the result of the democratic referendum. Come on Jeff, you are just angry that for once you didn’t get your own way.... Yours sincerely,CM Dancer

THANK YOUDear Caroline,Please may I through the Chronicle say ‘thank you’ to family and friends for the cards and messages of condolences in memory of my late wife Margaret Hall.A donation has been made to Holt Medical Practice of £445.00.Yours sincerely,Ralph Hall and Family

MERRY CHRISTMAS Dear CarolineOnce again we have reached that time of year when most of us are spending our spare time writing a mountain of Christmas cards! This year 1 have decided to do something different. I am involved with a brilliant school in Aylmerton called St Andrews, and, with the money I would normally spend on 70 plus Christmas cards, this year I am going to spend that money on a book or some books for the English department.1 will dedicate these books to the school from all my friends from here in Holt and beyond. So, through the letters page in the chronicle please allow me to wish all my friends near and far a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2019.Best regards and ‘jingle bells!’Jo Davis

EARLY GLIMPSE INSIDE NORFOLK’S NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPICE

Staff of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and families supported by them have had an early glimpse inside Norfolk’s new children’s hospice, the nook. The final tile was recently placed on the roof and, as is something of a tradition in construction, locally-brewed beer from Greene King was poured on, by EACH Chair of Trustees John Pickering, to signal the building is watertight. This took place on 29th November, before guests headed inside to see what progress has been made since building started a year ago. When finished, the nook will be a 21st century hospice to provide 21st century care, with more areas for clinical care, a

hydrotherapy pool, state-of-the-art sensory room, larger and better equipped en-suite bedrooms, dedicated therapy rooms and much more.Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive, said at the viewing: “This is, clearly, a very exciting moment for the staff of EACH, the children and families we support, and the hundreds of individuals, businesses, trusts and community organisations who have contributed so generously to the nook appeal. We’re keen to stress, however, that this is far from job done. The appeal total currently stands at £8.4 million, meaning we have £1.6 million of the £10 million public appeal to raise by summer 2019, when we hope the nook can become operational.”There are so many ways to show your support for the nook appeal and for more information visit www.each.org.uk/the-nook or for ideas on how to raise money call EACH’s Norfolk fundraising team on 01953 666767.

Unto a child is born, unto us a Son is given

Dear friends,The Christmas story of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem offers us both hope and love in a rather confused, insecure and fragile world. It is a story that tells of the coming of our God down to earth in order to reveal the light of his love and peace. Born of Mary, the child Jesus came into a world as every bit as complicated and difficult as our own. He was born into a nation, a community and a family that suffered from many fears and anxieties, torn by its own conflicts and confusion. Living under Roman occupation, homeless in Bethlehem, displaced by violence, fleeing as refugees to Egypt, the holy family could well have been a family in the 21st century. Yet, this holy family changed the world and the child Jesus shines a light of love into the darkness of our lives. Like a child born out of the love between a man and woman, Jesus is God’s gift of love, to us. In him God embraces and affirms our humanity and speaks to each and every one of us in our need, telling us, reassuring us that we are loved and knowing that we are loved by God we can then love ourselves and love others. The story of how love came down to earth at Christmas is a story that the Church tells again and again in the hope that people will make their own. Once we have made it our own, once it has spoken to our hearts we are invited to retell it in a language that is beyond words. The gift of God’s love is not something we can keep to ourselves, we are called to share it.The gifts we give and receive at Christmas are surely an outward expression of our love and appreciation for others and enable us to tell the story of love. Yet, such expressions of love and gratitude are not meant to be limited to Christmas, they should characterise our lives. How we live matters and how we live should tell the story we celebrate at Christmas. May I extend a warm invitation to you to join your local Christian community this Christmas, to hear again the story of how God made his love known to the world and may that story touch your heart and in doing so the lives of those around you. May the love and peace of the Christ-child be yours this Christmas and always.

Every blessing, Fr. Howard

JUST FOR FUN! It is a little known fact that when the baby Jesus was born he weighed 7lb 9oz. How do we known this interesting fact? Simple! Mary and Joseph had a weigh in a

manger!

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGSpreading a Little Christmas Cheer

‘Tis the season to be jolly! And who doesn’t love a biccie with their coffee or afternoon cuppa? Here’s a great recipe that keeps for ages, has all the lovely flavours of Christmas, is quick to whip up, and looks super seasonal too. I bought a fabulous Christmas Tree cookie cutter from Larners recently but they are available everywhere at the moment and a good investment for future seasonal baking. Run up a batch of these cookies and maybe freeze some for later in the month when the relatives or friends arrive…they will defrost in no time at all and are so much nicer than any shop bought biscuits, plus they make the kitchen smell amazing as they are cooking! A really great Christmas recipe, that looks amazing and is made quickly and cheaply… who says Christmas entertaining has to be stressful or expensive?A very Merry Christmas to you all, and I look forward to bringing you more recipes in 2019!Orange and Spice Christmas BiscuitsMakes about 40 biscuits1lb self-raising flour, sifted10 oz butter or margarine (I use Clover)8 oz sifted icing sugar1 heaped tsp mixed spice1 heaped tsp ground cinnamonGrated zest of 1 large orange2 medium eggs, well beatenA Christmas Tree, snowflake, or star cookie cutterSift flour and spices together into a roomy bowl. Rub butter into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through sifted icing sugar and zest until all well mixed. Using a knife, gradually mix in enough beaten egg to bind it all together into dough, and knead gently. Wrap in cling film and chill for about an hour to firm up. Roll out onto a floured board to about half an inch thick and cut out biscuit shapes, transferring onto a well-greased baking tray. Bake in oven for 12 – 15 mins on 180° until pale golden and firm to the touch. Turn out onto wired rack to cool. Dust with a little icing sugar and keep in an airtight tin for up to a week. WORK ON CAR PARK COMPLETEDFOLLOWING SIGNIFICANT

INVESTMENTNorth Norfolk District Council has completed a major refurbishment of a car park in Fakenham, which will provide a high-quality facility for the town and its visitors.Works to Highfield Road Car Park, which cost £80,000, have resulted in a much-improved facility. As well as the resurfacing, the car park has new signs and a barrier at the entrance. There are more than 70 spaces plus five disabled spaces. This brings the number of car parking spaces available in Fakenham to more than 400 across four Council-owned car parks.Charges have been introduced bringing Highfield Road into line with other standard car-park tariffs around North Norfolk.Cllr. Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and the Liberal Democrat Group said, “I am delighted this updated facility is now back online just in time to support local traders and local residents during the busy Christmas period.”

Mayor Cllr Maggie Prior, Deputy Mayor Cllr Richard NeechREPORT ON HOLT TOWN COUNCIL’S MEETING

12th November 2018Holt Town Council met on 12th November 2018 for its monthly Town Council meeting. Several residents were present and had a particular interest in the discussion of the planning application for a school off Beresford Road. After much debate and discussion Holt Town Council voted to object to this application. There were comments about the access and it was felt that this might be able to be made a lot better. In response to a letter sent to the Town Council from a local landowner, the Chair explained that she had been in touch with him regarding availability of land. The land in question, off Norwich Road, had originally been put forward after the call for sites in the Local Plan process. This site however was not chosen. She reported that there was never intention in gifting the land. She confirmed that the response she had given was verbal and there is nothing written to show. The Police had sent a report and it was concerning to note there had been burglaries in Holt. The advice from the Police is to be ever vigilant and take sensible precautions. Cllr Payne was concerned with the splattering of posters in the town and Cllr Baker promised to take this back to NNDC to see if they could carry out some enforcement action. It was reported that the following projects had been submitted to the MTI grant stream. • Yellow brick route• Park and walk• Shirehall Plain • Fish Hill/Star PlainIt appears there is a lot of competition for the money in Holt although we are not aware of them all, so we wait with baited breath as we have been promised that the results will be made known before Christmas. The Council were concerned that the closure of Children’s centres in Norfolk could put undue pressure on the Holt Centre, even though it is not scheduled for closure. These centres appear to be a lifeline for a lot of young parents and are part of a prevention schemeIt was reported at the meeting that negotiations have been ongoing with the owners of Nelson House and exchange has been promised before Christmas. The next Town Council meeting will be on 14th January at 7.00pm, we look forward to seeing you there. We are hoping that the consultant helping us on our Neighbourhood Plan will be attending to give an update with the referendum due to take place early part of 2019.

WHAT THE DICKENS?!!By Fiona Hewitt, Director Hayes + Storr

At this time of year, attention often turns to Charles Dickens and anyone who has read a Dickens’ novel will be aware of how much he loved to poke fun at lawyers and legal proceedings. Many aspects of modern legal practice would be completely alien to Dickens - employment law, intellectual property law, health and safety legislation to name a few, but there are some areas of the law where procedures have, in some respects at least, changed much less over the last 180 years …..Swear Words In The Pickwick Papers, a misunderstanding leads to the amiable but bumbling Mr Pickwick being sued. Dickens describes a scene at court, where a clerk is administering oaths:‘…the oath being invariably administered, without any effort at punctuation, and usually in the following terms:“Take the book in your right hand this is your name and hand-writing you swear that the contents of this your affidavit are true so help you God a shilling you must get change I haven’t got it.”’Although we now try to be a little more client-friendly in our approach, the wording described above will be familiar to anyone who has had to swear an oath for legal purposes. Clients often comment to us that the procedure seems rather archaic and strange. Certainly, it raises a few questions:What is the purpose of an oath? An oath or affidavit is a document which needs to be sworn before a solicitor or legal executive (Commissioner of Oaths). The document has to be sworn whilst holding a bible or other holy book. It is usually for documents used in Court, including probate oaths - the process of applying for a Grant of Probate, a legal document issued by the Court that proves an executor’s right to administer the estate of a deceased person. The idea behind confirming a document by means of an oath is that the person who swears to it is making a solemn promise that the contents are true, to the best of their knowledge and belief. It is the equivalent on paper of a witness in Court swearing to tell ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’. Lying on oath is taken more seriously by a court than an untrue statement made in other circumstances. What happens if you don’t want to swear on the Bible? Many people, whether or not they have any religious belief are prepared to swear on the Bible, accepting it as part of the procedure. However, some people object to the practice on religious grounds or for other reasons. In these circumstances, an ‘affirmation’ is perfectly acceptable and the lawyer who is administering the oath will provide some slightly amended wording. What is the swearing procedure? An oath must be sworn in front of an independent lawyer/solicitor - not someone from the firm who has prepared the relevant document. It is also possible to swear an oath before an appointed court official. You will need to repeat or read out the wording given to you by the lawyer which is not dissimilar to the wording described above by Dickens. The fee is currently £5, with an extra £2 for each ‘exhibit’ (document attached) to the statement. It’s a little more than a shilling, but still a token fee for this old-fashioned procedure and perhaps not too much for a chance to swear at a lawyer!

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However, no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Fiona on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01263 712835 or email [email protected].

Before the meeting members enjoyed a soup and sandwich lunch followed by cake. At this time of year we have to look to the future and vote in a new committee. Unfortunately, although we have a good number of members, we were unable to form a committee on the day.We have our 82nd birthday in December and we are looking forward to celebrating this event with a birthday cake and something ‘fizzy’!Hopefully our problems with the committee will be sorted out as we have a good programme of speakers for 2019 and more events planned with our Nor’easter WI group. ALL SAINTS, UPPER SHERINGHAM BELL PROJECT

At the meeting of the Upper Sheringham Parochial Church Council on Monday 12th November, it was unanimously agreed that we are now in a position to place the order with the bellhangers, Nicholson Engineering Ltd of Bridport, Dorset for the work to restore the bells at All Saints Church. The bellhanger, Andrew Nicholson, has now agreed dates for the work which will start with the dismantling of the current installation and the removal of the bells to his works in Dorset in July 2019. If all goes to plan, the work will be completed to enable the bells to be rung for Remembrance and Christmas next year, which will be amazing! The photograph shows (l-r) the bellhanger (Andrew Nicholson), the project coordinator (Sue Morton) and the Rector (Fr Phil Blamire) testing the new gallery ringing floor. There will be a balustrade installed once the work is completed, but we didn’t want it to get in the way of the bells being taken in and out.We have so far raised just over £46,000 from grants and personal donations towards our total of £75,000. Please consider helping us out. All contributions no matter how large or small will be very gratefully received! Can you imagine a more exciting legacy than to be able to say ‘I helped those bells ring out’.We have received (or been promised), and are very grateful for, the following grants:• North Norfolk Big Society Fund £10,000• Norwich Diocesan Association of Ringers £5,000• Ashton Charitable Trust £2,000• Paul Bassham Charitable Trust £1,000• Anne French Memorial Trust £500• Allchurches Trust £1,750There are several more grants in the pipeline, so we are keeping our fingers crossed!Once the work is complete, there will be an opportunity for everyone to have a go at learning this fascinating hobby, you don’t need to be involved in the church, attend services or be a Christian. If you are interested, contact Sue (details below) and we will be delighted to give you a taster session! Perhaps your New Year Resolution is to take up a new hobby; how about bellringing? How to donate: If you would like to donate towards giving our six bells their voices back please send your donation to Sue Morton,4 Linden Grove, Sheringham NR26 8PD. Cheques payable to ‘Upper Sheringham PCC’.If you are able to gift aid your donation, please ask me for a gift aid form, 01263 826078 or [email protected]. A big thank you to those who have donated so far, we couldn’t do it without you!If you prefer to donate on-line please go to: www.gofundme.com/upper-sheringham-bell-appeal.Sue Morton, Upper Sheringham Bell Appeal Coordinator

COUNTRY’S BIGGEST NEW YEAR’S DAY FIREWORK

DISPLAY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1st January 2019 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 20th anniversary.

New Firework Committee Chairman Pat West said: “To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War we will have a red glittering firework leaf sequence, which lasts about one minute before the main display at 5.00pm. I’m also excited to announce the reintroduction of the torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display at 4.30pm. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official torches, there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. I am very honoured that the trust of the fireworks committee has been entrusted to me, I can only hope I will be as long-standing as Jim Bond who has done an absolutely marvellous job.”The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day, with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat. The firework event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to raise funds for local good causes and to fundraise for the 2020 display. For further updates, please see Cromer Town Council website www.cromer-tc.gov.uk, the event’s Facebook page ‘New Year’s Day Fireworks, Cromer’ or Twitter feed @NYDFireworks and @north_lodge.

THE HOLT CHRONICLE 01263 712177THE CIRCUS

COMES TO SCHOOLAt Holt Primary school, we want the learning to be inspiring and exciting. Real life experiences help the children to develop more meaningful and long lasting understanding. This term year 3 and 4 have been learning through the topic of the circus. The children have written some exciting stories and

investigated various forces, magnets, light, shadows and electricity. A real life circus visited the school and everyone was invited to take part in a circus

skills workshop. The topic culminated in year 3 performing a fantastic display of dancing, acting and singing showcasing the children’s talents whilst parents could enjoy treats the children had made. An exhibition of the children’s homework also showed how the whole family became engaged with the topic!

SCHOOL’S YULETIDE TUNE RAISES MONEY FOR GOOD CAUSES

‘Christmas Day with You’ is an upbeat Christmas single recorded by Gresham’s Girls, a group of enthusiastic singers from Gresham’s School. Students Romy Sipek, Clementine Chapple, Molly Sankey, Amelia Fox, Tiah Paige Davie, Jemima Porter, Rachel Heath, Irish Croft, Ella Fairbairn-Day, and Maria Butcher form the singing group, who are making a bid for chart success and all for a good cause. Each year, Gresham’s School raises funds for its chosen charities and this year The Lord’s Taverners and Farms for City Children will receive the proceeds from the sale of this Christmas single and all other school fundraising. Chris Cooper, jazz piano teacher at the School, who wrote ‘Christmas Day with You’ says; “This is Gresham’s Girls third Christmas single, but it’s the first original track as the others were covers, that makes it really special to us. We’re really pleased with the song and hope everyone downloads and donates.”The brainchild of Chris Cooper and Justin Myers, Head of Music Technology, the charity single project has gone from strength to strength over the last three years and it is hoped that the song will raise more than a £1000 this year.Douglas Robb, Headmaster said: “It’s gratifying to see our fantastic facilities being used for this, now annual, charity fundraiser.”Photographs and a video accompanying the song were filmed by kind permission of the Cushing Family at the Fantasy Land Christmas attraction in Thursford. The single is now available as a download from Bandcamp, Spotify and iTunes. To download a copy visit: https://greshamsgirls.bandcamp.com/

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILVIRGIN MOTHER CHURCH

We need only compare (revelation 12: 13-14) with the Dead Sea Scroll below to see that the woman of revelation is the Church in the wilderness. From The words of the heavenly lights (4Q504-6) fragment 6, “Remember, pray, that we are Thy people and that Thou hast carried us marvellously [on the wings of] eagles and hast brought us towards Thee. And like an eagle which rouses its nestlings and hovers over [its young], spreads out its wings, takes one and carries it on [its pinions], so we dwell apart and are not reckoned among the nations and ... Thou art in our midst in the pillar of fire and the cloud [of] Thy [holi]ness walking before us and as it were Thy glory in our mid[st]...”. See (Exodus 16:10).Virgin mother Church, conned the world with Mary the so called mother of Jesus; she made her as a virgin just like herself (the Church). Its horrifying to think that the Church still see fit to deceive people with Mary. The Dead Sea Scrolls in English is published by Penguin Books. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice, and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

HOLT PRIMARY SCHOOL CHOIR HAVE HAD A BUSY TERM... AGAIN!With their festive jumpers and beautiful singing voices, Holt Primary School choir marched over to Budgens to help the Big C raise all

important funds for their cancer charity during Holt’s big Christmas lights switch-on. They sang a variety of Christmas songs to a captivated audience, who very kindly donated almost £100.00 to the charity. The choir then embarked through the crowds to sing for the thousands of people watching the lights switch-on and fireworks at the main stage. As a reward for their hard work and dedication, the choir have been treated over the past few years to a West End experience and this year was the best yet! 39 children arrived at school with sleep in their eyes early on the morning of Wednesday 28th November and set off on a long coach journey to the capital. After spotting some famous London landmarks, they arrived at the infamous Pineapple Dance Studio for an all-singing, all-dancing workshop led by some of the Lion King cast members. After belting out ‘the circle of life’, the choir made the most of the festivities as they wandered through Covent Garden. To end an already brilliant day, the choir then walked to the Lyceum Theatre

and took their seats to see The Lion King. After working really hard in an after school club, focusing on theatre setting, music, costumes and characters, it was a treat to see the real show. The children were in absolute awe of the performance and the performers and really enjoyed the experience. A quick coach ride through London, looking at some Christmas lights whilst eating their dinner, began the long bus journey home. Despite it being a long and tiring day, the children had an absolute blast! You can still hear them excitedly talking about it to their friends if you walk past the playground now...Holt Primary School choir look forward to even more exciting experiences in the future.

Solution to No. 250: diagram (B1ack plays first) 1.Qf6 Nc52. Qb2 Ra4, as given last time. (b) 1.Rb6 Rb1 2.Rb3 Ra1. (c) 1.Nc5Nc1 2.Na4 Rb3. (d) 1. Bc4 Ne1 2.Ba2 Nc2. (e) 1.a5 Rb3+ 2.Ka4 Nc5,a ref1ected echo of part (d). Note how only one unit will do in each part, for instance in part (c) a black R on a4 would be checking the white K.The convention in problems is that either side may castle unless it can be shown that the relevant K or R has moved. In No. 251, the last of 6 in our inter-club competition, 0-0 is a strong defence, so how can White stop it or disallow it with his retracted move?Difficulty 3. Solutions and comments to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham NR26 8NX, or e-mail to [email protected].

ORIENTEERING WINNERThe Chronicle has previously reported on the Orienteering activity of Holt’s Gillian Pilgrim and she has now walked (or is it run?) away with three awards at a local event.

The event was organised by Norfolk Orienteering Club when they held their annual Championships in Sandringham Woods on the Royal Estate. Gillian became this year’s ‘Woman’s Club Champion’, the prize for being the fastest lady once times had been scientifically adjusted for runners’ ages. The picture shows the Chairman, Ian Renfrew,

presenting her with the ‘Carol Towler Plate’. Gillian’s running also won her the ladies over 75 class and, much to her amazement, the lowest lady’s time, on any course, from the last check point to the finish. Her time of 91 seconds for this ‘run in’ was just 1 second better than the next fastest.

DRINK OR DRUG DRIVING AT CHRISTMAS

NOT THE USUAL SUSPECTS“Not all drink-drivers this Christmas will be young men” that’s the message from Norfolk Constabulary as the force prepares to launch its winter campaign. This is in support of the national drink-drive operation, reminding people that it is not always the ‘the usual suspects’ that drink and drive over the festive period. The campaign, which was first launched in West Yorkshire in 2016, illustrates deliberate stereotype characters to challenge the public perception about those who they think may be drink driving this December and reminds people not to drive after drinking alcohol. The festive crackdown, which officially launched on 1st December and runs until January, tackles those driving under the influence of drink or drugs and will see officers carrying out extra patrols and roadside checks. Any driver who is stopped due to concerns over the manner of their driving, a vehicle defect, or is involved in a collision, will be breathalysed.Specific time slots at Norwich Magistrates Court have been reserved to deal with those caught drink or drug driving. This effectively means that offenders could now lose their licence within 24 hours of being breathalysed whilst facing additional fines.Throughout the campaign roads policing officers will be using social media to share messages and provide updates on campaign results using @NSRAPT and via Norfolk Constabulary Facebook page. During last year’s campaign, in Norfolk 1,320 tests were carried out with 82 drivers failing drink tests and 35 drivers failing drugs tests.Inspector Jon Chapman from the Joint Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: ‘‘Driving while under the influence of drink or drugs is not acceptable but at Christmas the risks are even more prevalent with darker nights, bad weather and sadly, more people taking the risk by drinking or using drugs and then getting behind the wheel.“Statistically young men do form a large proportion of those whom we stop for drink-driving, however we are seeing more and more men, and increasingly women, aged over 35 who are drink driving, many with the attitude ‘it will never happen to me’. It is quite harrowing as many of the people in this age range have been targeted by decades of campaigns about the dangers of drinking before getting behind the wheel. Last December, almost 92% of everyone who were arrested for drink driving offences nationally, were aged over 25. These are people from all backgrounds, ethnicity and genders. Many of them have professional careers, they may have children and grandchildren and yet they are still choosing to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. We want to continue to drive home the message and make drink-driving socially unacceptable, no matter how old you are. There could be serious consequences to driving under the influence of drink or drugs including being involved in a serious collision where you or someone else is injured or killed. It is just not worth the risk.”The campaign will see officers carrying out roadside checks throughout the day and night. The public are also encouraged to report any concerns relating to drink or drug driving anonymously using Crimestoppers on http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/

BUILDERS

NORFOLK LIFEA Song of the Earth from Richard Shepheard

Many of us are familiar with that earthy old Norfolk fable about Horace Greenacre the most celebrated gardener in the village, who was called upon to give a lecture to the Womens’ Institute about his life as a horticulturalist. He set about his task with right good will, punctuating his speech several times with the counsel to use “...a gret ole barrer of well-rotted hoss manure.”His discourse was an outstanding success and the Revd Pettigrew said so to Mrs Greenacre. However, he added a little caveat when he said: “Don’t you think it would be nicer if Horace said ‘fertilizer’ instead of ‘manure’.” She chuckled and said: “I don’t know about that, tha’s’s took me ten years to git him ter say manure!”Muck is a celebrated subject and one often hears that expression: “Where there’s muck there’s brass.” However, because it is so often pronounced: “Where there’s mook there’s brass” (with the ‘a’ pronounced as a flat one, to rhyme with ass) the suggestion is one of Northern grit, Yorkshire acumen or Midland graft. The abiding impression being that the muck is the grime, soot and smoke of industry.Long before those things there was an equivalent in Norfolk which gives an entirely different impression. In this it is said: “Muck is the mother of money.”* The muck, in this case, being that from the straw trodden by bullocks in the yard, or the sheep grazing on the turnip tops, the “golden hoof” it was called. How do we know that this expression is the pristine original, however? Well, just say it. There is, of course an alliterative quality about it which is absolutely in harmony with our own green acres.*From Coke of Norfolk and his Friends, by Anna StirlingA Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

by Leslie KinsleyOur headmaster at secondary school (now the Astley Primary), was Billy May and he taught Maths and Geometry. Bad behaviour was rewarded with less Geometry and more Maths. I remember him striding up to school each morning, trilby hat on and books tucked under his arm. Mr Parnell had his legs in irons. He lived in a caravan near Craymere Beck. Our P.E. teacher was called Billy Bush. He was small and bossy. None of us liked him. I remember one of my friends lost his temper and punched him. He knocked his teeth out!My school friends all lived near and we got up to all sorts of mischief. We had nicknames. Mine was Kingcup as I had blond hair. There were Tabs, Buck and Squeaker. Squeaker and I are the only ones still alive now. We used to pool our pennies to buy sweets and cigarettes. (Five Woodbines cost two old pennies) We kept this money in an Oxo tin which we buried on the meadow. We built a den there too where we could sit and play cards in peace. We roofed it with sacking we pinched from a nearby field. The sacking had held fertilizer so it was a bit whiffy. In those days, Melton had gas lights. These were lit every evening by a man from the gas works. Our gang used to sneak behind him and switch off the lights he had just lit. Unfortunately for us, he told the local policeman who caught us doing it. The policeman carried a cane to keep us in order. We certainly got a ‘birthday’ that time!
