40 Days With Jesus…

John The Baptist: It Feels Like God Is On The Move! John the Baptist helps us to begin a walk toward Easter on this first weekend of Lent even though he finds himself stuck in a jail cell. But then again… Maybe that’s how you feel today: stuck. Even if you’re not stuck in a jail cell, you may feel like

your life is walled in and not really going anywhere. Perhaps you feel stuck in your job, stuck in your marriage, stuck in school, stuck in your financial situation or even stuck in your relationship with God. No matter where you are or how you are feeling, God wants you to know that he is with you, for you, and wants you to experience his love and grace, fresh and new today. Our God is in the “now” of our existence and He is on the move. He is anything but stuck. He invites us to know him and live our lives unstuck and in step with him through the power of the Holy Spirit and in the truth of his word found in the Bible. One of the great opportunities that we have during this particular season of the year known as Lent is to move toward a fresh start in an intentional pursuit of Jesus. Lent is the springtime of the soul that followers of Jesus have used throughout church history as a period to pursue a fresh and focused relationship with Jesus. Lent consists of 40 days, to prepare our hearts and lives to celebrate the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as we approach Easter. Lent is the perfect time to get “un-stuck” in your life; especially in your life with God. If your soul has felt the effects of a wintry season, God wants to begin to thaw your heart and life so that new life can begin to spring forth. Imagine what a celebration in worship could be like on Easter if we began to pursue God in a fresh way today and started to pray for him to help us get “un-stuck.” I am personally so excited about this new series because it focuses our hearts and lives on the person of Jesus. How He demonstrated unconditional love and absolute forgiveness of all people whose lives He changed. And how He is still making impact and changing our lives, even today! I, myself, am ready for that kind of change… How about you?

On the grace journey together with you, Pastor Lynwood

Correcting A Scoffer

"He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, and he who rebukes a wicked man only harms

himself. Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you ... The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom ... If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, you

will bear it alone." Proverbs 9:7-12 NKJV The Bible says that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." We gain this deep, powerful, life-changing wisdom when we seek Him. When we study His Word. When we pray and fellowship with Him. Part of this process is being vulnerable and open, allowing Him to teach us, correct us, and reveal when we are wrong. His correction can be unpleasant. But, if we seek to be wise, we will recognize that this correction is essential. And we will realize that there are many ways He can teach and correct us. We may go through situations in which we will be stretched and challenged. If we want to be wise, and gain God's understanding, we will learn from these experiences, and not reject them. Remember that even though correction isn’t pleasant, it is beneficial to experience. The Bible tells us that, when a wise person is rebuked, "he will love you." He will grasp the value of this experience. He will recognize that there is more to learn, that he might make mistakes, and that some things could be done better. Yet some are like scoffers, rejecting correction. Scoffers are defensive and think about themselves. When such people are corrected or rebuked, the result is shame and harm for those who provide correction. They do not recognize that they have anything to gain through the advice and observations of others. Today, ask God to show you if you have in any past or present been guilty of having been a scoffer. Wouldn’t it have been wiser to welcome His instruction and correction, in whatever form it comes? Seek Him. Humble yourself before Him. Gain His wisdom. Consider the following prayer…

“Father, show me if I ever act as a scoffer. I seek Your wisdom. Show me where I may need correction. Lead me. Teach me Your ways. Thank You. In

Jesus' name. Amen.”

When Fear Grips Your Soul Has fear taken hold in your life? Here are some keys to overcome this stronghold. First, understand who you are… Let scientists argue about whether or not there was a "big bang." If there was, you were not the result of it! Nor did you descend from an amoeba in a pond.

You are "fearfully and wonderfully made," (Psalm 139:14). You have been made "in His own image" (Genesis 1:27). God didn't assign your creation to His most powerful angels. You're a hands-on, made-to-order, one-of-a-kind product. As a redeemed child of God you are His "...workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works..." (Ephesians 2:10). Believe that and stand on it – regardless of your feelings or your social status. Then, understand who God is… He calls Himself your "Heavenly Father," not just your creator and designer. Your creator and designer refer to what He does; your Father refers to who He is! "He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6) These aren't His roles; they're His proper names. They are capitalized in Scripture because they are what you are to call Him! When Jesus taught us to pray He didn't begin with "O, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God." Yes, He's all of those. But, when it comes to us, He wants to be recognized and called "Father" (Matthew 6:9). That's how He thinks about us, and wants us to think and to feel about Him. "Father" is meant to convey warmth, security, acceptance, concern, compassion, protection, assurance, provision etc. He's your Father! When you grasp the truth of that, you will begin to overcome your fears Finally, understand God's commitment to you… His Fatherhood isn't based upon mood, sentiment or emotion; it's based on His unchanging character and faithfulness. "For the sake of His great name the Lord will not reject His people, because the Lord was pleased to make you His own." (1 Samuel 12:22) Notice two things in this verse – concern for His good name and the pleasure He takes in being your Father. These are the reasons why He will never turn His back on you. Satan would love to convince you of that. He will tell you that you've failed God, or that God has failed you in order to make you feel unworthy, hopeless, disowned by God and abandoned. Suffering and adversity don't cancel His faithfulness, He's "the same yesterday, today, and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) He can't love you once, and not love you always. "After you suffer for a short time, God, who gives all grace, will make everything right. He will make you strong and support you and keep you from falling..." (1 Peter 5:10) Today declare, "Nothing can ever separate me from God's love."

The Loser Who Won... Big Time

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Sparky. At least that’s what his classmates called him. He was given the nickname in honor of a comic strip horse named Spark Plug. Sparky hated the name. But name-calling was the least of his worries. School was tough for Sparky. His favorite subjects were recess and lunch. He failed every single subject in eighth grade. High school was no better. He flunked algebra, English, Latin, and

physics. In fact, to this day he holds the record for the lowest physics marks in his school. Sports weren’t much of an improvement. He made the school’s golf team, but his poor play ended up costing his team the championship. Sparky was a loser when it came to friendships, too. No one seemed to notice him. He was astonished if a classmate said hello. Afraid of rejection, he never asked a girl out. Instead, he devoted himself to the one thing he really enjoyed: drawing cartoons. No one thought they were any good, but that didn’t stop him. He practiced on binders and scribblers, and by the time he was a senior in high school, he got up the nerve to submit some cartoons to the yearbook staff. They were rejected. After graduating from high school, Sparky wrote a letter to Walt Disney Studios inquiring about job opportunities. He received a form letter requesting samples of his artwork. The letter asked him to draw a funny cartoon of “a man repairing a clock by shoveling the springs and gears back inside it.” Sparky drew the cartoon and mailed it off with his fingers crossed. He waited anxiously for a reply. Finally it came. Another form letter spelling out rejection. Sparky was disappointed but not surprised. He had always been a loser. This was just one more loss. Looking in the mirror one day, he smiled with the realization that in a weird sort of way, his life was funny. Almost like a cartoon character. Then a thought hit him. Why not tell his own story? Why not draw cartoons of the misadventures of a little boy loser, a chronic underachiever? He had no idea where his idea would take him. This boy who failed the eighth grade, the young artist whose work was rejected by his own yearbook, was Charles Monroe “Sparky” Schultz – creator of the Peanuts comic strip and the little boy whose kite never quite flies.

You know him as Charlie Brown.

We are excited and believing this night of fellowship and worship, along with youth from other churches, is going to be only the beginning

of other great things God has planned for us!

We are especially looking forward to hearing The Word from Mark Turner, the Family Minister Pastor from

Nansmond River Baptist Church in Suffolk.

Dinner and worship are free! (Support Donations are gladly accepted)

What To Do… Did Jesus suffer? Was Jesus sometimes lonely? Was he tempted to be discouraged? Was he misunderstood, maligned, and criticized unjustly? Of course! None of us are exempt from suffering, loneliness, discouragement, or unjust criticism, because God is developing within us the character of Christ, and, in order to do this, he must take us through all of the circumstances in life through which he took Christ. It is through those challenges and struggles that we most certainly learn to trust. Does this mean God causes tragedies? No. God is good, and he will not cause evil or do evil. But God can use dark and stressful times for good. He'll use them to teach us to trust him (2 Corinthians 1:8-9), to show us how to help and to trust Him in others (2 Corinthians 1:4-6), and to draw us closer to other believers (2 Corinthians 1:11). So, what should you do when you're going through difficult times? Remember God is with you. Rely on God's protection and guidance. We all go through difficult times. The difference for those who believe in Jesus is not the absence of the shadow but the presence of the Light.

Joyful Tithes and Offerings!

When it comes to tithes and offerings did you know that many Christians don’t tithe or give in offerings? They have their own reasons as to why they should not tithe or give in offerings. I have heard some say well it’s only in the Old Testament it’s not in the New Testament. Well how wrong they are because God spoke it in both Old and New Testament. Whatever your reason may be for not tithing of giving in offerings it really comes down to a matter of the heart. Because whatever is in your heart that which you will do. The bible says in Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” People can often ask us for anything in the world and we will probably say yes to it but when they say give money it’s like we didn’t hear one word all of a sudden we are deaf, we think that when we tithe it’s going to the pastor for his benefit. Remember the church has bills to and it can’t run by itself…it needs funds to keep lights and heating on and a building for you to come to worship. If we can get rid of some of the foolishness and junk that our enemy Satan has placed in our heads about tithing and offerings we won’t be so hardened in hearts. God wants you blessed in every area of your life which includes, physical, mentally and spiritually…so yes He will bless us with money and with good health and with spiritually gifts and talents. Our God is a huge big God and He can do more than what you and I can ever dream of! Don’t stop giving to God in tithes and offerings, remember that amount you give Him, He’ll in turn bless you a hundred fold…and had it not been for God you wouldn’t be able to go out and work and have a job anyway…so in reality it belongs to Him anyway. We got nothing on our own. AMEN And so you know tithing and offerings is in both Old and New Testament… here are just two which I am giving…

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Malachi 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing

until there is no more need.

Tragedy Into Blessing

Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their nine children and themselves to travel to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally saved enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the whole family on a new liner to the United States.

The entire family was filled with anticipation and excitement about their new life. However, seven days before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks’ front door. Because of the possibility of rabies, they were being quarantined for fourteen days.

The family's dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America as they had planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, stomped to the dock to watch the ship leave – without the Clark family. The father shed tears of disappointment and cursed both his son and God for their misfortune.

Five days later, the tragic news spread throughout Scotland – the mighty Titanic had sunk. The unsinkable ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family was to have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind in Scotland.

When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for saving their lives and turning what he had felt was a tragedy into a blessing. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)

God is doing some exciting new and powerful things

through the faithful people of God at

HBC…

Please remember your commitments and giving and be

part of the miracle!
