Starting up new businesses with export potential is a key driver of employment and prosperity and a major priority for Enterprise Ireland. We have a range of initiatives that stimulate the flow of new entrepreneurs, support the growth of start-up companies and enhance the start-up environment in Ireland.
Our aim is to harness the innate ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ that exists in Ireland, to motivate creative business people, to innovate, to disrupt and to drive growth, through internationalisation. Our role is to stimulate the entrepreneurship eco-system, so that it facilitates entrepreneurs to start new and exciting businesses.
We know how hard it can be to get from ‘idea to income’. We commend the founders and CEOs behind the start-up businesses of the ‘Class of 2013’ for taking the important step of converting their new idea or technology into a growing company. In the process, they have helped create the jobs and the sectors of the future in Ireland.
As recipients of assistance from Enterprise Ireland you are in a strong class, in a country that is noted for its high level of entrepreneurship culture and achievement.
The Class of 2013 are particularly tenacious as they have prevailed in a hostile economic environment, yet each has progressed.
Over the years, Enterprise Ireland Start-up Classes have included many interesting start-up businesses, led by talented and capable entrepreneurs. Some of these start-ups are now global corporations. Companies like: Eirgen in Waterford, whose high

potency oncology drugs have gained regulatory approval in USA, Japan and the Gulf region, or like AMCS in Limerick, who provide end-to-end solutions for waste management, and last month closed a €23.5 million financing round, or like Ezetop in Dublin, one of the largest and fastest growing Irish companies, who provide international and online mobile phone top-up technology, with global operations in Ireland, North and Central America and the Middle East. Our ambition for the ‘Start-up Class of 2013’ is that you will achieve similar success and that your businesses will be the Irish business success stories, in the years to come.
Attendance at “The Start Up Class of 2013” allows founders an opportunity network and to make valuable contacts. While you may operate in different sectors and markets, many of you face the same issues, such as product development and innovation, recruitment and retention and market penetration. You all share the same aim - to sell more, in international markets.
I hope that you come away from today, assured and enthused, about the opportunities that exist for Irish businesses, in global markets.
The feedback from our offices across the world is that ‘doors are open for Ireland’. Last year, companies supported by Enterprise Ireland created more new jobs than any other year over the last decade. This is in no small part due to the contribution of start-up companies.
The “Class of 2013” brings together the 200 high potential start-up companies supported by Enterprise Ireland 2013. These consist of 103 HPSU companies that have successfully raised seed funding. There are also 85 early stage businesses that were successful in our Competitive Start Fund. In addition, we have a representative project from each of the 12 New Frontiers entrepreneur development programmes.
The breath and dynamism of the entrepreneurial activity in Ireland is evident in this Start-Up Class, which covers a wide range of sectors including; Software & Services, Medical Devices & Pharmaceutical, Cleantech & Engineering and Food & Consumer Products. We also have 17 start-ups that have moved to Ireland during last year from all corners of the world including Argentina, US, UK, Denmark, France, Spain and Italy. This is not surprising considering that Forbes magazine recently ranked Ireland as ‘the best country to do business’ and Wall Street Journal rated Ireland as ‘the most entrepreneurial country’.
Last year we also undertook an ambitious programme to help female-led start-ups. I am delighted that we have already seen a 100% increase in the number of HPSU investments for such companies. A total of 41 female led start-ups were supported.

At the earlier stage of business we supported over 350 entrepreneurs to develop their business plans to get to investor ready – including over 100 participants on the New Frontiers programmes, which are running in all parts of the country. I am delighted that we have a representative project from each of the 12 programmes represented here today. In addition to New Frontiers, Ireland is fortunate to have a number of excellent accelerator programs that have been instrumental in harnessing ideas into business propositions with market and investment potential. I would like to acknowledge their hard work and the great work they are doing with start-ups.
It is encouraging to see that Irish entrepreneurs have not been intimidated by the market challenges of recent years. I salute their ambition and their courage, their commitment and determination as they build competitive, export-oriented business that can compete with the best and succeed across world markets.
Finally, I would like to wish the class of 2013 every success in building your businesses. Enterprise Ireland looks forward to working with you and assisting you with every step of your journey.
