News from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs)

July 9th - “Poseidon” with Sandy Garcia The design is 11” x 11”. It was originally done on slate with Patio Paint, but Sandy has also painted it on a round Tin piece. The slate has a little “tooth” that is important to this piece, however, if you cannot find slate then wood, canvas or tin would work. You would have to create “tooth” by rolling the paint on your surface until it is almost dry. In this case, do NOT use Patio Paint, use your regular acrylics. Also, there is a prod-uct by Rust-Oleum called Fine Textured Finish that could be sprayed on wood or metal only that gives a nice corrosive finish before painting. It comes in colors so pick a neutral shade like beige. Those members who have signed up and paid for the July class are: Charlene Butler, Jeanne Robert, Sheila Elliott, Leslie Pilcher, Teri Hayes, Charlotte Hicks, Linda Silvasy, Roxanne Walker, Cynthia Smith, Diane Jensen, Jan McCracken, Jan Johnson, Ramona Jacobs, Sue Bond (Marilyn), Sharon Carlson, Karen Krause, Kenna Perrin, Renee Molloy, B. J. Witz, Candy Sciarretta and Jane Mortensen (guest of Renee). If you signed up but have not paid please send in your check so we can get the prep directions to you.

Aug 13th - " Antique Vase on Metal Magnetic Board “ with Lori Hillstead The piece is approximately 141/2” x 141/2”. The board is $12.00 which includes 4 magnets. Lori brought 25 boards to the May Paint In and we only have 2 left. For those of you who are attending this class, “we” will collect the $5.00 for her packet that she will bring with her. The packet includes: Scrapbook papers, red var-iegated leafing, adhesive, 1/4” double sided tape. There will also be stamps, stamp pad, and stencils provided to use in class. Those members who have signed up and paid for the Aug class are: Charlene Butler, Jeanne Robert, Candy Sciarretta, Neva Anderson, Cheryl Powell, Renee Molloy, Sheila Elliott, Cynthia Megill, Yvette Dorais, Kenna Perrin, Leslie Pilcher, Charlotte Hicks, Linda Silvasy, Roxanne Walker, Linda Camp, Cynthia Smith, Lorraine Baumann and Kathy Steffel. And again…if you signed up but have not paid please send in your check so we can get the prep directions to you.

Sept 10th - “Boo Halloween Shirt” with Ramona Jacobs The surface: Shirt of your choice but 50% cotton and 50% polyester blend is recommended.

It was great to have the time to participate in special events, a meet and greet dinner, classes, the annual meeting and banquet. I used to feel so deprived when I was work-ing and limited to what I could participate in. I like the look of painting on a variety of backgrounds. I took the multi-media spe-cial event classes so I could get experience with using stencils and stamps, and prod-ucts to create texture. The painting was very basic, but these class opened my mind to ideas to enhance decorative painting. They also introduced new products. I won a bag of DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics. I took a colored pencil class with Paula Leo-pold that loved. This is just drawing in color. She uses oderless paint thinner on a brush to soften it and give it an oil painting look. Sue Pruett and Diane Crowther taught a great theory class on Intensity and temperature. I also took a very loose flat brush rose from Jessica Jansen. The one thing I am most excited about is I purchased a board and an Accredited Decorative Painter Portfolio. The ADP is a new classification for certification. It is like a baby step. Not as intimidating as a CDA or an MDA. I chose the still life with a collage of flowers and fruit. At the banquet, with encouragement from other PHP members, I was able to go to the microphone and represent our chapter. I did not have a banner, but not all chap-ters had them. They took a group picture. Look for my smiling face in the Decora-tive Painter Magazine. Cindy Smith

I went to the SDP conference from Wednesday June 8 thru Saturday June 11. It has been the tenth conference I have attended. I took some wonderful classes, loved the shopping, met some ladies from all over the country and enjoyed the banquet on Friday evening. We had a real nice room at the hotel enjoying the amenities and beautiful roses on the property. The classes I chose were mostly florals to challenge my painting skills and learn new tech-niques from teachers I do not usually have the opportunity to paint with. All the floral classes used water soluble oils. I gained some experience there. The ladies in my classes were from all over- Nevada, Florida, New Jersey and Texas to name a couple. It was nice visiting with vendors from those states and in booths with our local folks- Shara Reiner, Sandy Strecker, Bobbie Takashima and Brush Guys to name a few. The annual banquet on Friday night was fun. The guest speaker was Stephen Fishwick. He painted a picture upside down in about 10 minutes of the white rhino from the Safari Park that had recently passed away leaving only 3 of its kind left in the world. The art work was auc-tioned off later to fund the scholarship program for SDP. SDP also gave out awards and had the Chapter Parade of Flags. I was lucky enough to win the centerpiece from our table spon-sored by the Boots and Brushes Chapter from Texas. Everyone from our table received a paint-ed placemat, liner brush, and ornament.

I only took 3 classes and loved them all. I looked at all the actual pieces on display and might have taken a lot more classes if I could have seen the project piece instead of only the photo. All the offerings were really amazing. I took the multi-media class of the Convention Cover Piece (Artful Journey) taught by Debbie Cole. I couldn’t believe how many multi-media techniques she used—stamps, stencils, texture paste, colored pencils, DecoArt Americana AND Media Paints, sponging, roller stamps, decoupage, & probably more. Debbie choreographed the class very well — she had gone through the entire project herself and made notes of every potential prob-lem or slowdown and came up with a solution. She even had a little sandwich bag at each seat for the wet sponge that we didn’t have time to clean out and a cutout mask to block out the pre-basecoated design when we did the background. It’s the only way we could have done all we did in 7 hours. There were several PHP members in that class….. I took a hummingbird feeder class from Tami Carmody, which was a lot of fun and a whole education on hummingbird feeding issues to boot!! I sat next to Sandy Lonnecker in the Zentangle Intro Class taught by Sandra Phillips CZT. What a blast! With a little structure and a couple of rules, how you can easily turn doodles into art! It is a whole movement!! We never realized… The trade show was small, but that didn’t stop me from buying way too much. I’m with Cindy Smith — the new certification category is intriguing! Overall, a fun and very edu-cational week. Leslie Pilcher
